How To Replace the Chain and Sprockets on a Yamaha TW200

  • After riding my Yamaha TW200 over 13,000 miles, my stock front sprocket is finally worn out to the point where it's skipping teeth under heavy load. The rear sprocket was replaced with a 47 tooth shortly after buying the bike new. The chain was also replaced at about 7000 miles since the stock chain stretched out quickly. Now it's time to replace both sprockets and chain because mixing new and old parts together will cause them to wear out quicker. So it's best to replace everything all at once unless the bike is brand new. I will be using an X-ring chain and slightly tweaking my gear ratio this time around. I hope you get a lot of value out of this video and thanks for watching.

      @@TDubsKid Me again. I do almost all my own wrenching for my vehicles. Presently, my son and I have 14 bikes. 10 are vintage like the Kawasaki 500 triples. Some old YSRs and JT 1 Yamahas . I also have a Grom and my ‘87 TW. So I’ll play around with the carb on it it soon. The Welch plug is out. But the bike generally runs crappy. Back firing while de-accelerating down hill and hesitations and low power. I live on the west coast of British Columbia but ride at all kinds of elevations. Do you have a video of what can help these carbs or should it be replaced?
      Thanks my friend.

    Excellent vid. I'm probably twice your age, used to be an aviation mechanic and own a TW200. Your vids are fantastic with accurate info, thorough content and have been helpful.
    These little bits may help.
    Chain adjustment: Because of the slop between the hole in the snail adjuster and the axle, after adjusting both snail adjusters and before tightening the axel nut, I take a mallet and tap both ends of the axel toward the front of the bike. The axel will move forward a little and this takes out any slop between the snail adjusters and axel ends, eliminating any misalignment of the axel due to this slop. I also wrote on the swing arm, with a paint pen, the axel/nut sizes and torque spec. This way I just grab the right tools and go to work.
    Changing rear sprocket: I simply used an open end wrench to hold the bolt heads while turning the nuts on the back side, both during disassembly and reassembly while torquing from the back side. This eliminated both the need to replace the lock plates and the work associated with straightening and bending the tabs on these plates. It is also important to degrease fastener threads when using lock-tight. Break cleaner works well. Any lubricant left on either the male or female threads will interfere with lock-tight's ability to hold as intended.
    Keep up your awesome work and humble ways. You are an inspiration to us all :)

      thanks, and that's awesome! so much appreciated 😃 that's a good idea, I usually push it snug up against the adjuster with my hands but that makes things easier, such a good idea. yeah I would have done it that way and probably could have gotten my flex head torque wrench back there, would be nice not having to buy new lock washers. thanks for all the great info, i'm sure others will find it useful. so much appreciated 🙂

    Following your wise advice, since it's been decades since I worked on motors, took the TDub to my LBS, and had both sprockets changed, as well as new bars & risers added, and a USB port hooked up. Haven't had the chance yet to get her out on the highway, but on the forest roads she's noticeably faster. On our 2 lane blacktops, even though the speed limit's 50mph, pretty much everybody goes 60+! Your vids are great, and little by little I'm getting back into working on the bike myself. I found no need to bend the tabs on the lock washer plates on the rear wheel sprocket or any need to replace these lock washer plates. I held on to the head of each bolt with large smooth jaw vice grips with the end of the jaws engaged with the head of the bolt. With the vice grips bing in line with the axis of the bolt being held. Using the smooth jaw end of the vice grip so as not to damage the plating on the bolt heads. Then turned the nut on the other end of the bolt on the back side of the sprocket. It was easy to remove and install the bolts this way while causing no damage to the lock washer plates and reusing the lock washer plates as they were not damaged. Awesome vid with excellent info. So this is old, but I thought I would put in my 2 cents worth on the many sprocket change discussions.
    I read the pros and cons to different set ups so I finally settled on one.
    These changes are all according to each person's needs.
    The hard core mainly off roader will want to be lower geared. The highway guy will be the opposite.
    Me, I'm 71 and am in the middle. I do ride all kinds of terrain but won't put the little bike through things not designed for. So I need to ride road to trails and run around on black top. So I simply went 45 on the back. All it did was what I wanted. A little less vibration at 50-60 mile an hour and I'm sure a bit of a rpm drop. I hated the sound of it needing a 6th gear.
    I get to go a little farther in first.
    One of my long hills to come home is about 8% so I have to shift from 5th to 4th nearer the top. Big deal.
    Over all, for me it's better than stock and hasn't changed where I go or use the bike. Of course I'm old lol

    This video is SO helpful. Thank you for the time it took to do it. I'm working on this job now and I've watched it numerous times to make sure I don't screw anything up. The biggest problem is the panhead screws in the case not wanting to come out of my 2000 TW. I'll deal w/ that today.

    I don't have a TW 200, neither do I expect to purchase one, but that's ONLY because I don't do any off-road riding. I have a 2018 Kawasaki Ninja 400 ABS KRT, and a Genuine Buddy 50 scooter (45 mph, BTW).
    So, why did I "like" and "sub"? Because your tutorial was very clear, very well produced, and I appreciate your effort. BTW, I doubt that your dinosaur can "whup" Godzilla, even with Godzilla's right rear leg tied to his tail.

      Yeah the reason is the large tire, the output shaft needs to stick out much further to accommodate. And it needs support from another bearing. At least it doesn’t need to be done too often. Way easier on other bikes though

And as the bike was used when I purchased it and the front sprocket and chain are definitely showing wear, I'm changing both sprockets and the chain to new. Being a retired aviation mechanic. I could do this work on my own while looking up the specs, etc. However, your vids make it so easy. I actually plan to take my lap-top to the shop and as I do the change, start and stop your vid. This will make it super easy. Thanks again.

      No problem man, you deserve it. Your editing and drone footage is pretty damn good and tastefully done. I don't even own a TW but may some day. The main thing holding me back is that I'm a lanky 6'4 guy and feel like Lurch on one. Haven't sat on one with risers though, I don't necessarily hate low seats. • @64maxpower
    @64maxpower 5 лет назад +1

    I went to 15 /42. Too tall off road but helped a ton on the road. For a designated dirt day I stick a 14 on there.
    Most people torque to ft/lbs.I like that little torque wrench you have. I hate they make the aftermarket sprockets where they cut the center thinner making you change the bolts. Sunstar sprockets are same thickness as stock if you can find one. I ordered an custom aftermarket shock .I'll let you know how it works. That chain will last a long long time. I like you don't wear the helmet all the time now. Measure from the center of your swing arm pivot to center of your axle on both sides. My rear wheel was 2 detents off at the snail to make the wheel strait. From what I hear my TW isn't unique to the issue

    • @TDubsKid
      @TDubsKid  5 лет назад

      wow that is some tall gearing haha but that's cool it works well on the road, that's true but the torque specs are even numbers in NM since it's from japan, just seems more simple but I put the ftlbs in the description as well. it's a great little torque wrench. yeah that part is pretty annoying, seems like it would cost more to cut it out. maybe it's a clearance issue on some bikes. for sure let me know about that shock, I would like to see it. for sure it's so nice to not have to worry as much about the chain now. yeah I enjoying not wearing the helmet when off the bike, just had to get the audio figured out, hmmm is it the swing are that is misshaped or the snail adjusters, or did they stamp the numbers wrong?

    • @64maxpower
      @64maxpower 5 лет назад +1

      @@TDubsKid I read others having alignment issues on their TW too. Don't know exactly where it's from. In the end the wheel has to run strait so I trust the tape.

    Great video’s and info. Been following your channel for some time, just found a T Dub and going to change gearing, I’m thinking I may die grind engine cover so it will always be easy to access front sprocket. Is this idea something you thought of doing but seen there was a reason not to do. I never liked my dirt bikes to have enclosed front sprocket being they can clog up especially in mud, and clay being the worse. Thanks so much. You do the very best video’s on RUclips!

    • @TDubsKid
      @TDubsKid  2 года назад

      Hey thanks. Doing that is not an option because there is a bearing in there that supports the output shaft. oil also flows through there. Would have been better if they put an xt225 engine in there. Since that front sprocket just has a normal cover over it. They probably did it that way because the sprocket needed to be further away from the engine due to the fat tire.

    Great how to video!! Appreciate you taking the time to film while doing these projects and editing it all. Just did this swap and your video was extremely helpful. I did however use a DID Xring chain with 124 links, but still had to remove a link for it to fit properly for some reason 🤔
    Anyways keep up the good work, and looking forward to your next video!

    The biggest thing I've encountered that slows my tw down is tire resistance. My tires got low and the speed went down. Gas milage too. I've noticed the smoother the road surface the faster it accelerates. Being on an really smoothed down highway makes feel like it's got a turbo!

    Just noticed this video and I like you. I have done this job before and figured that the dirt entering through the wiring inlet is ridiculous. It's not hard to pack the wire entry after reassembly to prevent this design flaw.
    On the rear sprocket swap, I have no idea why the aftermarket decided to weaken the hub mounting surface by reducing depth.
    Add to that, the bolt kits available are very substandard. Threads are poorly cut, washers are not "plate" but thin mush and the nuts are chrome plated malleable junk. The shoulder of the bolt was reduced way too much and should have more bearing surface on both hub and sprocket rather than having side forces on some threaded area. Two of the six bolts I installed stripped out the nuts at 20ft/lbs (don't question my torque wrench) in incremental graduated rotation. Very poor metallurgy. The external lockwasher plates are Yamaha and do as designed.
    I think it is best to re-use the Yamaha quality hardware and more PLATE washers if you wish but I ended up making a steel flange sprocket insert to compensate for thickness and all weaknesses of aftermarket products.
    Keep up your good vids.
    One more - That was a Sasquatch howling in your camping video. No fears, they are curious and friendly but very smelly.
