Definitely something wrong with the clutch switches or something on both bikes if you can only start them in neutral. I've owned a 1st gen KLR650, and a TW200, and both would start in gear with the clutch pulled in (make sure the side stand is up, though.) Reason the KLR died in the water is the carb vent tube goes 'down'. Once it's in the water, it won't vent the carb, and stops fuel from flowing into the carb. Do a simple 'T' with the carb vent and run one side of the tube from the T up high under the seat or gas tank and it won't stall out in deep water.
Thats a sidestand swith so you dont start riding with the stand down and kill yourself.... are both their sidestands broken or are they that dumb? Pretty sure its a rule all newish bikes have to have those switches to be legal at least in eu...
The TW is such a fun bike. It's easy to pass it off as too small and underpowered, but it's a fantastic bike. Small bikes are underrated. The KLR is a legend too. I have a Honda XR650L and I love it. You can have so much fun on dual sports like these.

Great video! We ride a TDub, XT250, and a pair of Royal Enfield Himalayans. I'm pushing 75 now, and the Himi, at 431 lbs wet, is a lot of work offroad. Considering their factory team rode a pair to the South Pole a few years ago, yeah, the Himalayan can handle anything, but it's NOT a light bike. My little TDub on the other hand, well, she goes where she pleases, and doesn't give a rat's backside about how hard it is. I also had the gearing changed for a faster top speed, so I don't have to have one eye glued to the mirrors on pavement. The TW200 is a fantastic little giggle machine!

Starting that klr after in deep water had me cringing! If you think it took water in the intake (air box got water in it) check that before cranking it over! Great video though
The engine piston can only compress air fuel mixture; water will not compress and will damage the engine system. Water can enter through both: Intake and Exhaust when the water level is greater than the inlet and or outlet.

Breather tube below the seat was under water and it stalled. Most KLR riders cut them off a little higher to deal with this issue, but that depth of water might have knocked out most KLRs.
I had an XT-225 for many years. The engine was totally reliable. If I had it to do over again, I'd get the TW-200 since we do a lot of RV'ing now. The TW is the perfect companion for that. If I was doing a lot of road-riding, to get to a site, I'd definitely go with the KLR-650. My old XT had a hard time maintaining hwy speeds...seemed like it was at the upper-end of what it could do. I can imagine that the grippyier tires on the slightly smaller engine of the TW would be much worse for wear. The KLR could maintain interstate speeds with no problem. If I were to TRAILER the bikes to the site, I'd take the TW-200 hands-down. It belongs on the fire-roads and trails....I'd just see if could get an overstized tank for it. Being less than 1/3 the CC's of the KLR, the fuel economy will be fantastic.

Tons of fun guys! I have both a XT225 similar to the TW and a XR650L.. I enjoy them both equally, just in different applications.. 225 plonking down forest roads, 650 desert romping..the 225 is much less fatiguing and the possibility of death basically non existent.. the 650 not so much ;)
As an owner of both bikes I agree with everything you guys say. My KLR 650 is a great around town bike. Sits up high and a comfortable riding position. Good on trails but you are always aware it could wash out underneath you in slippery conditions and it has. The KLR is a fast sob and in town I have taken sport bikes at the lights. The TW is more burrow like. Don't expect speed but you are low to the ground and feel like it can go in nasty places. One pet peeve is the TW's little engine can get hot. Really hot and you can feel it on your legs. Oh, yes, and the brakes are shit. But you are driving slow so that isn't as much of a concern. You are changing gears a lot on the TW as well. But they are both the best bang for your buck second to none. People love the little TW. It's ugly cute and everyone wants to have one. Must have something to do with our natural love for mini bikes. Two things that a normal growing boy in Canada always wanted, a mini bike and a bb gun. Well the TW is an adult's version of a mini bike.
there's an external oil cooler for it... if you change gear a lot you dont have the proper gearing, stock 14/50t is trash... brakes are more than enough if set correctly, if not thats glass, there's a rear disc conversion for it too ;-) _
Ive had 3 KLR560's in my time and the LAST place I'd go with it is any kind of loose or sandy or rutted areas. It was a top heavy ill handling nightmare. Every time I see a video saying the KLR is a legend for off road I have to imagine the people making it have no clue. It;s ok on hard packed dirt roads and tails in VERY good shape but after that youd need to be stupid to take it in anything more challenging. It was especially impossible to manage in sand. However, I LOVED these bikes for the street, not hwy. Id put street rubber on them, not knobbies, and it was fantastic for bombing around town. Something else Id do is put stiffer fork springs in it for my weight... I was amazed how much this improved the handling. The stock suspension is some of the mushiest worst crap Ive every had on any bike. Ive also owned a dozen motocross bikes in the last 30 years and a slew of other street bikes and ride all the time so Im going to say I know what Im talking about. I'm not some cucked neutered father of 3 living in the burbs who fantasizes about a life of adventure because his manhood is in his wife's purse and goes out and buys a KLR because the internet told him it was the bike to get. Not even comparable. you can break new trails on the tw literally just drive straight into the forest no 4x4 can really do that except maybe a rockbouncer or similar competition truck. the only place a 4x4 jeep can excel is large rock ledge climbs the tw doesn't really have the power to hop up obstacles like a trials bike or large enduro.
Obviously you did this ride before you bashed the Ram. lol Cool that you multi-tasked your trip. Cool that David loaned you his bike. You 2 really need to do more OR riding and get in shape. LOL On that terrain, the 650 would have been fine. Relaxed and compliant. Like you noted, soft suspension is superb for long OR runs. However, that TW200 would be my choice between the 2 for technical stuff. You don't want to be throwing around that much weight(KLR 650) on the single track stuff. Would exhaust even those in shape for the ride. My KLR 250 would have been a perfect compromise.
The clutch interlock on the 1st gen KLRs is notoriously bad. It's supposed to work like normal so you can pull in the clutch and start it in gear. I had to bypass mine and chose to wire it so neutral was required. In retrospect choosing the other option is not a bad idea as long as the rider knows it will start in gear with the clutch out and jump forward unexpectedly.
I have found out the hard way on my old KLX250 that a carbonated bike will stall if the carburetor vent tubes get plugged with water. Th vent tubes go down with the drain tubes so they will stall in water that is shallower than the foot pegs.

I’m guessing you submerged the carb vent line on the klr. I had the same experience on mine. I fixed it with a “t” that I routed up under the gas tank.
Grew up on a TW200 got it in 4th grade and had it in high school! They where such a low tuned engine long as you kept oil in it thing would run for ever!
I've always wanted a TW200, however, I am concerned with power and speed. The speed limits in my area are 55-80mph depending on the road, the very back roads are fine, with most being around 55-65mph.
The Tw is best suited to what they are doing with it here, hard to beat it. It’s not a highway mile machine. It’s great for around town and limited road use.
i put a smaller sprocket on mine and it would easily do 70+ and still has decent low end power. wouldnt reccomend it though. the bike feels a bit sketchy above 60
I put a larger sprocket (1 tooth larger than stock) on the front and it cruises 55 quite nicely. I’m no sucker for power but ride it to work on 55mph roads all the time. It’s also great for trail adventures too
it's sad and comical that i'm seeing review of decades old motobikes in 2023. It's a shame the bike makers are too busy offering big heavy expensive ADV bikes and ignored the under 500cc class of D/S and trail bikes. I guess those fat profit margin of big fat ADV bikes are hard to resist
You can still get all sorts of sub 500cc dual sport bikes from all the manufacturers. Sure some (not all) are old designs but why change what isn't broken? XT250, DRZ's, CRFs, KLX's, KTM's, Husqvarna. Options are out there.
Sorry, I’ve opened both of these bikes including the same year KLR you are riding and neither required them to be in neutral to be started. The TW was ok but the bigger tires actually caused more problems than they solved. Moved on to XT’s and they were much better
ITo make the KLR water crossing safe, google "KLR T Mod". The current carb vent runs downwards, beneath the bike. When you went into the water, you basically cut the carb's ability to breathe. It's a well known issue. If you wanna turn that bike into a world stomping beast, (that BMW owners look up to) look up 'KLR farkles, or 'Eagle Mike''. It's a small 'to-do' list of things to make it truly 'unkillable'.
that TW needs 5 or 6 more ponies on rear wheel and it would be perfect for city commuting AND (light) off roading. i wouldnt go few K miles long adventure, but anything under, that yami looks awesome. cant say bad thing about Big thumper either. im modifying mine into tracker with external fuel pods.

! really, like this video! If you’re willing to go old-school, would love to see a KLR 250 along with the TW 200. That’s my bias since I ride a KLR 250 and bought my teenage son a TW 200. I’m not a big guy, 150 pounds and I’ve been riding the same 250 for 21 years. I gave thought to moving to the KLX 300 but could never justify it when all I have to do is put oil and gas in mine and run it. Got a 2014 TW 200 last year and was extremely impressed with how light and nimble it is. It definitely does not have the sluggish steering of the heavy front end of the KLR. Anyway, great bikes, great video really like seeing the motorcycles in Moab. Tell Roman I think You two are a great team!
Interesting that you mentioned the heavy steering of the KLR 650. I too have a TW200 and an XT 225 and I would say that the steering is also heavier on the XT then on the TW. In fact I prefer the TW on a twisty blacktop over the XT. And the TW will make it up a gravel hill better than the XT.
I think the KLR would make a excellent adventure bike with some mods but when I watch video on this bike there are always three things that people complain about. One is the 5 speed at freeway speeds it is screaming and it needs a 6th gear, the second is most people want it upgraded to fuel injection which I can understand and the last one which I think is a stupid complaint is people complaining about the gauges still being analog😕? I think if Kawasaki addresses the first two issues and produced a adventure bike version of the KLR with bags and other adventure bike accessories it would be right up there with the Honda African Twin.
Clarke makes a 4 gallon tank for the TeeDub. There was also someone who modified an Acerbis 5.8 gallon and put it on a TW200, but that seems... crazy. 80 mpg and 5.8 gallons of fuel is just overkill :D
Bought a 2012 TW recently. $4000. You might say I payed too much. Went to my local Yamaha dealer. TW is supposed to be $4995...buut noooo!!! Dealer mark up and other bullshit fees made it over $6300. My 2012 had 800 miles on it...original, elderly owner, garaged and covered...literally new condition. I put $1500 in upgrades and mods on it and it is still a grand cheaper than a new one!! Dealers are absolute crooks!!
Then you really wouldn't want the KLR 650. I went from it because it was too tall and top heavy to a DR 650. I wanted the DRZ 400 but it too was too tall for me although not too heavy, and they're more expensive than a used KLR 650 or DR650. I prefer my TW200 over any of those on a trail.
Definitely you don’t need the weight of a 650 going off-road. Max you need is a 300 dirt bike. You can have lights and registered and be able to drive it on roads.
I owned the KLR 650 and the TW200 at the same time and I can't say that the KLR650 would clobber the TW200 in every way. Yes the KLR 650 has a higher top speed. But there are many trails that I would rather have the TW200 including rutted roads. I ended up selling the KLR 650 because it was too tall, or rather I am too short. The KLR 650 is better the taller and bigger you are, the DR650 ended up being a better match for me.
@@papatorr3669 Back in 1999, I took the KLR250 for precisely the height considerations. All the Dual Sports on the market at that time were awful for me except the KLR250. Loved everything about it, except it was not electric start. Which was fine back then, but sold it off as my age and health changed. Maybe the only other thing that could have enhanced the bike would have been a little more fuel tank capacity. 140 miles(ish) was ok most of the time. But I would have liked 200 for peace of mind.

this isn't really trail riding this is dirt road riding lol. TW200 is the way to go for actual trail ridding KLR is way to heavy for actual trail riding.
If you want to run one bike through a water hole, you need to run the other bike through a water hole. Otherwise you’re not comparing the two bikes together! You need to do everything the same way with “each” bike… mythbusters screwd up in the same way.

Agreed; at least a stock TW200 will start in first gear with the clutch squeezed.

I really wish I could buy a TW, but the few that come up for sale used are usually 10-15 years old, and not much less than new msrp. :(

TW was the first bike I ever rode. I learned how to ride on it and took my M1 test on it too.
I own both these bikes. Both have their advantages and disadvantages.

I had it's bigger brother, the XT-225. Great machine....but it struggled on the hwys a bit.
I had a 99' TW. Would run all day 55-60mph. Top speed was about 70 or so. Stock gearing. I rode it everywhere except major interstates.
i put a smaller sprocket on mine and it would easily do 70+ and still has decent low end power. wouldnt reccomend it though. the bike feels a bit sketchy above 60
I put a larger sprocket (1 tooth larger than stock) on the front and it cruises 55 quite nicely. I’m no sucker for power but ride it to work on 55mph roads all the time. It’s also great for trail adventures too

it's sad and comical that i'm seeing review of decades old motobikes in 2023. It's a shame the bike makers are too busy offering big heavy expensive ADV bikes and ignored the under 500cc class of D/S and trail bikes. I guess those fat profit margin of big fat ADV bikes are hard to resist
You can still get all sorts of sub 500cc dual sport bikes from all the manufacturers. Sure some (not all) are old designs but why change what isn't broken? XT250, DRZ's, CRFs, KLX's, KTM's, Husqvarna. Options are out there.
@@SophiFike they get phased out slowly but surely in Europe, as new models need to comply with the Euro 5 standard... And most don't get replaced.
Sorry, I’ve opened both of these bikes including the same year KLR you are riding and neither required them to be in neutral to be started. The TW was ok but the bigger tires actually caused more problems than they solved. Moved on to XT’s and they were much better
ITo make the KLR water crossing safe, google "KLR T Mod".
The current carb vent runs downwards, beneath the bike.
When you went into the water, you basically cut the carb's ability to breathe.
It's a well known issue.
If you wanna turn that bike into a world stomping beast, (that BMW owners look up to)
look up 'KLR farkles, or 'Eagle Mike''. It's a small 'to-do' list of things to make it truly 'unkillable'.

that TW needs 5 or 6 more ponies on rear wheel and it would be perfect for city commuting AND (light) off roading. i wouldnt go few K miles long adventure, but anything under, that yami looks awesome. cant say bad thing about Big thumper either. im modifying mine into tracker with external fuel pods.

Very enjoyable video to watch, thanks, I'm a gen 1 Klr650 owner and I won't trade my bike for the world, the Klr650 asks for nothing, just point it in the right direction and it will circumvent the earth, I'm looking to get a T-dub for a daily commute to work and back, to give the old Klr a break, and this video just convinced me
I don't care about fuel gauges, ABS, blah blah blah. I like a simple, barebones bikes. That's why I love these bikes🎉

! really, like this video! If you’re willing to go old-school, would love to see a KLR 250 along with the TW 200. That’s my bias since I ride a KLR 250 and bought my teenage son a TW 200. I’m not a big guy, 150 pounds and I’ve been riding the same 250 for 21 years. I gave thought to moving to the KLX 300 but could never justify it when all I have to do is put oil and gas in mine and run it. Got a 2014 TW 200 last year and was extremely impressed with how light and nimble it is. It definitely does not have the sluggish steering of the heavy front end of the KLR.
Anyway, great bikes, great video really like seeing the motorcycles in Moab. Tell Roman I think You two are a great team!
Interesting that you mentioned the heavy steering of the KLR 650. I too have a TW200 and an XT 225 and I would say that the steering is also heavier on the XT then on the TW. In fact I prefer the TW on a twisty blacktop over the XT. And the TW will make it up a gravel hill better than the XT.

I think the KLR would make a excellent adventure bike with some mods but when I watch video on this bike there are always three things that people complain about. One is the 5 speed at freeway speeds it is screaming and it needs a 6th gear, the second is most people want it upgraded to fuel injection which I can understand and the last one which I think is a stupid complaint is people complaining about the gauges still being analog😕?
I think if Kawasaki addresses the first two issues and produced a adventure bike version of the KLR with bags and other adventure bike accessories it would be right up there with the Honda African Twin.

Clarke makes a 4 gallon tank for the TeeDub. There was also someone who modified an Acerbis 5.8 gallon and put it on a TW200, but that seems... crazy. 80 mpg and 5.8 gallons of fuel is just overkill :D

Went to my local Yamaha dealer.
TW is supposed to be $4995...buut noooo!!!
Dealer mark up and other bullshit fees made it over $6300.
My 2012 had 800 miles on it...original, elderly owner, garaged and covered...literally new condition.
I put $1500 in upgrades and mods on it and it is still a grand cheaper than a new one!!
Dealers are absolute crooks!!

I tried a dr 650 off road and it was to big and heavy. I loved it for travel but I had a better travel bike for that so I’m back to a trail bike now.
Then you really wouldn't want the KLR 650. I went from it because it was too tall and top heavy to a DR 650. I wanted the DRZ 400 but it too was too tall for me although not too heavy, and they're more expensive than a used KLR 650 or DR650. I prefer my TW200 over any of those on a trail.
Definitely you don’t need the weight of a 650 going off-road. Max you need is a 300 dirt bike. You can have lights and registered and be able to drive it on roads.
As a matter of first impression, the KLR should have the fat tires of the TW.
I was thinking how you could compare such different bikes. Thought the 650 would clobber the 200 in every way. But then I watched the video!
I owned the KLR 650 and the TW200 at the same time and I can't say that the KLR650 would clobber the TW200 in every way. Yes the KLR 650 has a higher top speed. But there are many trails that I would rather have the TW200 including rutted roads. I ended up selling the KLR 650 because it was too tall, or rather I am too short. The KLR 650 is better the taller and bigger you are, the DR650 ended up being a better match for me.
@@papatorr3669 Back in 1999, I took the KLR250 for precisely the height considerations. All the Dual Sports on the market at that time were awful for me except the KLR250. Loved everything about it, except it was not electric start. Which was fine back then, but sold it off as my age and health changed. Maybe the only other thing that could have enhanced the bike would have been a little more fuel tank capacity. 140 miles(ish) was ok most of the time. But I would have liked 200 for peace of mind.

Great comparison of two very capable bikes. Surprising how well the TW does. Easy to see why Yamaha hasn't changed it over the decades.
Ive had 3 KLR560's in my time and the LAST place I'd go with it is any kind of loose or sandy or rutted areas. It was a top heavy ill handling nightmare. Every time I see a video saying the KLR is a legend for off road I have to imagine the people making it have no clue. It;s ok on hard packed dirt roads and tails in VERY good shape but after that youd need to be stupid to take it in anything more challenging. It was especially impossible to manage in sand. However, I LOVED these bikes for the street, not hwy. Id put street rubber on them, not knobbies, and it was fantastic for bombing around town. Something else Id do is put stiffer fork springs in it for my weight... I was amazed how much this improved the handling. The stock suspension is some of the mushiest worst crap Ive every had on any bike. Ive also owned a dozen motocross bikes in the last 30 years and a slew of other street bikes and ride all the time so Im going to say I know what Im talking about. I'm not some cucked neutered father of 3 living in the burbs who fantasizes about a life of adventure because his manhood is in his wife's purse and goes out and buys a KLR because the internet told him it was the bike to get.
