You are one of two people reacting to this song that understands what the song is about. An overbearing, over protective mother. I've watched several who think it's a lovely song about a mother's love for her son. I can't stand when people miss it so badly....
This is a concept album that has to be listened to from start to finish in order to get the context. One of the best selling albums of all time and for good reason .
I wholeheartedly agree. The Wall MUST be listened to or watched in it's entirety to fully appreciate the context of this song. The whole story is a masterpiece.
The "Wall" is an emotional wall to keep others out. The question is "Mother, should I build the wall?" And of course, Mother's going to help build the wall.
Few bands in the world that have had so many hits and lasted for so long .. Watch the pink floyd comfortably num pulse concert .. Fantastic guitar solo. 😀
Lol. You get it. The tonality of the rift on guitar It’s almost perfect. String. And yes. Scientifically. String theory. It’s harmonious. It’s naturally an attractive sound the solo that is. It’s perfect

Girl, I'm a white, 58 yr old disabled Vet. My mother was JUST LIKE THIS! She was over the top. Never let me have a life. I could work, go to school and back to work. I always had a thing for Latina and ebony girls, (I'm now married to a wonderful Colombian angel) but mom was very prejudiced and that was forbidden. She was a single mother, but that was no excuse. We are estranged now... and that's ok with me. She can't accept that I married a Latina. She was the epitome of this song. I'm happier than I ever thought I could be. My wife helped lead me to Christ. We have a good life. She works from home - VP, Risk Management for a fortune 500 company (top 3). The Lord has given me the ability to forgive her, but I have to stay away from her. I have cancer and chronic illness. Treatments and medications get me by. Love you girl. You're one of a kind.
Perhaps you need to re-connect with your Mother and forgive her, our time on this planet is short and we're not guaranteed a tomorrow. Do it, before you can't have that chance to heal.....please.
I'm amazed at how much you're taking in on first listen. Me, I'm like, "Cool song, nice guitar solo." But you're processing the lyrical content, the bass playing, the lovely piano flourishes, all at once. You're the Ideal Listener the makers of this album had in mind when they took such care in assembling it.
The Wall is a double album about a performer named Pink who has a bunch of things go wrong in his life, so he builds a “wall” to protect himself from the world. ( Father killed in war, abusive teachers, cheating wife, etc.). In this song, he has an overbearing mother.
That song concludes the whole film The Wall. It explains why Pink got so crazy, based on his mothers fears. It could be used as a study in psychology explaining mother issues, and maybe it is a Roger Water biography as well. You should see the film from start to end without extractions. The album can also be heard from beginning to end as a master piece. Pink Floyd is true geniuses.
As others have said, this is part of a concept album, and you really should listen to the whole thing at once...it's the only way!!! While this can definitely be appreciated on its own merits, when you listen to the entire album "The Wall" (and then watch the movie) to truly appreciate its greatness and the genius of these guys.

guuuurl, nice to see you back on the best rock band mankind ever produced :D Maybe you should listen to them more chronologically though. The Wall album is their summit in terms of darkness and despair of the human condition (and intense social decay of humanity since the 70s). But it's a long journey between their beginning and how they got there. From a musical perspective one can explicitly trace/hear the evolution. I would recommend you at least use a Pink Floyd discography timeline, so that that you can easier situate what you listen to in their evolution, from their early music in the 60s, to their culmination with the Wall in 1979

However, was so good to see the deep and brilliant way that you absorbed it, is simply touching. You made me laugh when the drums explode in the song, taking it to the top during the guitar solo. Girl ... you made me feel like I was listening to this song for the first time and thanks for that.

persadies referring to the “wall” mother built for the son to keep out “the evils of the world”. It was referred to twice before in the song. When the son asked “mother should I build a wall? “ Since the outside world was portrayed to the son from the mother as a scary world out there. Second when mother said “ of course mother will help build a wall”. As in common terminallity “building a wall up” to protect ones emotions and feelings most commonly in relationships which can be a big barrier to ones success. So at the end the son still can’t break free from the mothers influence even tho he knows it’s not healthy. And in an almost defeated state asks the mother “mother did it need to be so high” as in did the wall you built need to be so high..it obviously fucked up the son on many different levels.
@persadies - And for this style, this theme, Roger is right on with his impression. The voice is tortured, breathless, crying... At first it might sound strange and even "wrong" for a fresh listener, but it really is what it needs for this album... You feel the pain, the rage the delusion...

You really hit the mark there with your thought & feelings predicting the song & it's lyrics & commend you on that. One side not that you might have missed is that it might be viewed from a heroin addict that he's contemplating his lost life as well. This song really hit home for me too until I saw the movie & seeing him put that needle in his arm as he screamed for his mother really opened up my eyes for life in general. We all make mistakes but will still look for approval from out mothers even though in life we know we're making mistakes no matter how big or small.
I love this song and watched a dozen reactions of it. Honestly I think you're the only one really understanding the lyrics correctly (it's a negative and sad song, the mother is overprotective and helps the son to build a "wall" protecting him from the world). You clearly understand the music, too. Best reaction of this song, by miles.
The song is about our main character, Punk's overprotective mother and how she built a metaphorical wall to isolate him from society, therefore the last line "Mother did it need to be so high?"
Firstly, happy Valentine's day. Second, I know you have already reacted to comfortably numb but you should really check out the live version from the Pulse tour. With special instructions as to actually watch the stage show for the outro solo. It (and the guitar solo itself) is beyond epic. A million times better than the album version. You won't be disappointed
Hi ScribeCash. I'm seeing many request for songs off of the album animals. Dogs, Pigs ( 3 different ones ) and Sheep are all masterful. They are long but with many changes and technical mastery. The lyrics are deep as well. IMHO, their best work. Studio on these 3 are best. Too many fine details to recreate live.
In a way I was always jealous of this song. I lost my mother at a very early age, and this song allowed me to see all those things most people miss when they grow up with their parents. Throughout my teenage years, and beyond I would see my friends take advantage of their mothers, call them names and never take their advise. I never understood why they would treat them like that. All I wanted to was just to speak with mine one last time and I feel like this song is her speaking to me over the years.
You're listening exactly how you should be with pink floyd. Headphones, eyes closed, swaying, but I gotta tell you it's a sin to pause ANY pink floyd songs.

Richard Wright was arguably the most important member of Pink Floyd.
Dam girl, you are one smart woman. you have this band figured out! Also, you have a good voice.
Richard Wright one of the best piano/ keyboard and organists. Knew how to put just enough in to make it awesome.
Yes! U dig from the jump!
You really need to listen to the whole album in one sitting to get the full effect and story
Loved your reaction!!!

@nicholas wolf I will do that. Thnx!
The greatest Mom/son relationship since Norm and Norma Bates.
You need this whole album in its entirety....it a concept and a masterpiece!!! get some headphone, chill and give it a go...
So intense Pink Floyd is. Even after 50 years wow.
You're listening exactly how you should be with pink floyd. Headphones, eyes closed, swaying, but I gotta tell you it's a sin to pause ANY pink floyd songs.
