Girl, I'm a white, 58 yr old disabled Vet. My mother was JUST LIKE THIS! She was over the top. Never let me have a life. I could work, go to school and back to work. I always had a thing for Latina and ebony girls, (I'm now married to a wonderful Colombian angel) but mom was very prejudiced and that was forbidden. She was a single mother, but that was no excuse. We are estranged now... and that's ok with me. She can't accept that I married a Latina. She was the epitome of this song. I'm happier than I ever thought I could be. My wife helped lead me to Christ. We have a good life. She works from home - VP, Risk Management for a fortune 500 company (top 3). The Lord has given me the ability to forgive her, but I have to stay away from her. I have cancer and chronic illness. Treatments and medications get me by. Love you girl. You're one of a kind.

The Wall is a double album about a performer named Pink who has a bunch of things go wrong in his life, so he builds a “wall” to protect himself from the world. ( Father killed in war, abusive teachers, cheating wife, etc.). In this song, he has an overbearing mother.

that last line: Mother, did it need to be so high?

    • @dartbull24
      @dartbull24 4 года назад +6

persadies referring to the “wall” mother built for the son to keep out “the evils of the world”. It was referred to twice before in the song. When the son asked “mother should I build a wall? “ Since the outside world was portrayed to the son from the mother as a scary world out there. Second when mother said “ of course mother will help build a wall”. As in common terminallity “building a wall up” to protect ones emotions and feelings most commonly in relationships which can be a big barrier to ones success. So at the end the son still can’t break free from the mothers influence even tho he knows it’s not healthy. And in an almost defeated state asks the mother “mother did it need to be so high” as in did the wall you built need to be so high..it obviously fucked up the son on many different levels.

It could be used as a study in psychology explaining mother issues, and maybe it is a Roger Water biography as well. You should see the film from start to end without extractions. The album can also be heard from beginning to end as a master piece. Pink Floyd is true geniuses.

guuuurl, nice to see you back on the best rock band mankind ever produced :D
Maybe you should listen to them more chronologically though. The Wall album is their summit in terms of darkness and despair of the human condition (and intense social decay of humanity since the 70s).
But it's a long journey between their beginning and how they got there. From a musical perspective one can explicitly trace/hear the evolution. I would recommend you at least use a Pink Floyd discography timeline, so that that you can easier situate what you listen to in their evolution, from their early music in the 60s, to their culmination with the Wall in 1979

Firstly, happy Valentine's day. Second, I know you have already reacted to comfortably numb but you should really check out the live version from the Pulse tour. With special instructions as to actually watch the stage show for the outro solo. It (and the guitar solo itself) is beyond epic. A million times better than the album version. You won't be disappointed

I think it's interesting how Roger wrote lyrics from the perspective of a woman IN SOME PARTS of the song. It's rare when this happens, but not unheard of. I recall the song "Your Woman" by the band White Town written in much the same way, written by a man but from the perspective of a woman.

Fantastic to see you coming back to listen to Floyd again. It's a great tune, and yes, Pink Floyd music is always a journey. You should get a second monitor for your computer so you can see the lyrics while you listen: the lyrics are always important to the experience and often profound in their own way.

day jee no it is an album that was thinking to tell a story like many albums of the late 60s and the 70s. But roger waters thought the album like a giant piece with the album, a show and a movie. This is not a soundtrack this is an album. The reason I insist on this is that the soundtrack of the movie is not quiet the same. Some things change with the movie. Not in a bad way but as far as musically speaking the album is better. The reel interest of watching the movie is not for me music it is for those great pictures (reel or animated) that just put the story on another level. It is interesting to compare the difference of feeling between just listen to the album and watch the movie. To me the movie is darker than the album.

I understand what you"re saying Jan as PF is telling a story on this concept album. However this song can stand alone as anyone with an overly sheltering mother could relate.

day jee You're an idiot wrapped in a moron. Waters is Pink Floyd. Syd's music was pretty simplistic, nothing like Roger's. And he wrote the vast majority of their music, including all of Dark Side. There's no Floyd without him.

You really need to watch the movie. It's really deep. I gave it to my psychologist and she never gave it back lol! It's about a rock star on the road going thru a divorce, strung out on drugs and has a nervous breakdown. Its autobiographical for Roger Waters the bass player. It really happened. And they bring elements of Syd Barrett, their first singer/guitarist, who had a drug psychosis from lsd during their early days. Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Wish You Were Here were written about him also.

This album is as deep as deep goes.
The Wall tells the fictional tale of a British rock star evolving into a Fascist leader. How feelings of fear, abandonment and inadequacy can fester and create a malignant hatred that feeds off the dark side of our nature.
A troubled childhood, hatred and fear create an ambition that lifts him to power, and from there to suicidal despair.
They also made a feature length movie of the album but I prefer the original album's music and edit over the film's score.

In a way I was always jealous of this song. I lost my mother at a very early age, and this song allowed me to see all those things most people miss when they grow up with their parents. Throughout my teenage years, and beyond I would see my friends take advantage of their mothers, call them names and never take their advise. I never understood why they would treat them like that. All I wanted to was just to speak with mine one last time and I feel like this song is her speaking to me over the years.

You really hit the mark there with your thought & feelings predicting the song & it's lyrics & commend you on that. One side not that you might have missed is that it might be viewed from a heroin addict that he's contemplating his lost life as well. This song really hit home for me too until I saw the movie & seeing him put that needle in his arm as he screamed for his mother really opened up my eyes for life in general. We all make mistakes but will still look for approval from out mothers even though in life we know we're making mistakes no matter how big or small.
