Back in O.C. Calif when I was 27 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"... I met David Gilmour and he gave us both a signed album. We chatted for 22 minutes while he signed others albums. 35 lucky people won tickets. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. It was AWESOME..... Greatest show I've ever seen. and I've seen Pink Floyd four times.
That's cool mate. Part of the fun of doing these videos is seeing what she does and doesn't connect with - sometimes within an artist's catalogue. Rach didn't connect with Dogs, but she did with Sorrow and Great Gig for example. I'm not forcing her to listen to anything (no shackles beneath the table 😉), and I'm not expecting her to love or even like everything (although I'm hoping that she does). She's up for listening to music that I love, and for letting me know what she thinks (good or bad). That's kind of the point of the channel 😁. Cheers

Amazing live performance of "Mother". I've been listening to Pink Floyd since I was a kid and everytime I hear any of their songs they mean more and more to me. All genre's aside Pink Floyd is the greatest band to ever exist.

i saw opening night of this tour at the L.A. Sports Arena and to this day it still stands as the best concert i've been to...and i say this having my very first concert ever being their L.A. Sports Arena show for DSOTM.
This is a great live version, so glad I bought the box set CD in the 90's!. The build-up to their UK no. 1 hit single in 1979 'Another Brick in the Wall' is astonishing
i was lucky enough to see the wall tour in 1980 in los angeles. this CD package captures the sound of the show beautifully. if only they'd put as much effort in making a video record of the show. anything you can find is fair quality at best. it's a shame really because it was an amazing concert.
Yeah, I remember reading that they did film it but the band weren't happy with the outcome, so it never got released. It is a real shame. The Roger Waters Wall Tour was amazing, and the video of that is brilliant. Next best thing I guess! Thanks for watching!
The album The Wall which this song is from with a concept album that Pink Floyd did it was meant and made for the whole album to be listened to from the first song to the last cuz they all connect. The song is about a little boy and lost his father in world war II she became father and mother overbearing and controlling to the point it made her son neurotic. Very sad song. I've watched other reactions and the younger generation totally does not get this song at all lol.
Well, I don't think I've ever heard an analysis of the actual musical element of Gilmour's solo as spot-on as Rach's--I never thought about it in the way she describes it (and I've heard The Wall a ton of times): the music enacts the mother's harsh protectiveness. I also agree that the song doesn't really stand out on its own; it's really more valuable in the context of the album (not trying to stir up bad feelings among fans by saying so). It just doesn't have the dynamics that "Comfortably Numb" has or "The Happiest Days of Our Lives/Another Brick in the Wall, pt. 2." I'd even say "Goodbye Blue Sky" has a harder hit to it than "Mother." But it's still a great song, and I love seeing more PF reactions from you two! Thank you!

it's good live but the studio is the prefect song,the exhale at the start letting you know it's one of those days,the touches on the bell of the ride,roger's sweet two note bass,dave's melodic break,wright's deft little touches.all the way through that masterpiece of an album(for me it's art work)dave is the ying to roger's yang,the sweet relief to his paranoia/isolation etc if you will.at the end of mother "you'll always be baby to me" has to be the most heartbreakingly beautiful audible hug ever put to vinyl,then the last acoustic strum...BRRRRRING...draws it to a close.jees chokes me everytime thinking of my dear departed patricia(mother),pink floyd the best band ever lived,have a good day folks

Waters and Gilmour do that alternating verse/chorus or call/response so well. On Comfortably Numb Waters also does the dark verse and then Gilmour does the uplifting chorus. This is a very good version, but I much prefer it when Roger had a female singer singing the chorus in his later solo tours with a backing band. Those are REALLY great!
Such a great song. Definitely one of their best and most underrated in my opinion. I think it's total brilliance....but of course, I think that about PF as a whole.
This song is quite evident that it is about a suffocating and overprotective mother, a rather negative figure who hangs like a shadow over her son's life and choices, preventing him from becoming a strong and self-aware man. The reason is clear: she lost her husband in the war and towards her son he pours her care and attention in a morbid way for fear of losing him too. While not directly referring to Roger Waters' mother, who did indeed lose his father in World War II in the landing at Anzio, Italy, the entire record "The Wall" is ultimately an anti-war work lest the children grow up without a father. Indeed, as someone said: "The function of fathers is to prevent mothers from driving their children crazy." To become a man, the child will have to free himself from all these fears and insecurities and break down the very high wall that he has built around himself. Happy New Year from Milan, Italy
The wall album needs to be listen to from start to finish, great reaction nonetheless. Please rake a look at The Final Cut album. The last album released with the classic 4. A very underated album in my opinion.
Hi, I am planning to do a complete album listen of another Floyd album very soon. And I was thinking of breaking down the Wall into sides, because I agree it's hard to listen to some of the great moment in isolation. But to be honest, I don't see us looking at The Final Cut. RDME As you know that Roger has lost his father during WWII when Roger was only 5 months old. His mum had to support he and his brother. According to him, his mum was overprotective of him and his brother like building a "Wall" around them. She worried about losing them. I think that he stated his mum checked on his dates. I know that there are mums would check on women whose sons wanted to date like my mum did that to me just protective and won't see their sons being hurt.
Have you seen the 'lockdown sessions' Roger has uploaded. They feature the fabulous Jess and Holly from Lucius. The version of 'Vera / Bring the Boys back Home' is cracking with J & H particularly good.
She seems interested in the lyrics, you should pull them up so she can follow along (lyric videos are trash though, best to go with a lyrics site). This song is all about the lyrics, and the context of the story. This song serves as a great introduction to the concepts and story of The Wall, better than most, as it explicitly describes several of the bricks. I would recommend When The Tigers Broke Free as another introductory song, as it describes in heart-wrenching detail one of the more under-explored bricks in the wall. Leaving this song off the album was a terrible choice, and is one of the best parts of the movie imo.

@@RDMusicExchange I'm an enthusiastic long-time Floydian (since 1975, when I was about 10 years old, my older cousin got me into it) and I like to dig around here on RUclips looking for anything Pink Floyd related. I'm really surprised at how many interviews and interesting things I find here with Pink Floyd (and people who have come into contact with them). A great interview I saw recently with Alan Parsons about the TDSOM recording or a great press conference with Nick Mason in the US, an interview with Syd Barrett's sister but also interesting "shootouts" between Roger and David... Unfortunately I don't speak English, so I only watch videos with subtitles and write posts using a web translator :-(. Keep it up and I wish you all the best - your fan from the Czech Republic ;-).
the wrong concept he does not see his mom as one of the bricks but the one is helping him build the wall, he is revealing his mom as a saint and speaking highly of her. If anyone has issues with their mom swallow your stinking pride and tell her I'm sorry and I love you, one day she will not be there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
