Can not catorgorize there style. To me its there own style, little bit of everything in it. So very diffent than any other band ever to this day. Its magical ,dark happy ,sad, everything all in one. Its everything you'd ever need to listen to and hear.
You got it right. The Wall is about a man who builds a psychological wall between himself and society. One of the bricks in the wall is an overprotective mother.
Pink Floyd was just so different. Brilliant storytellers, musicians and artists. I always felt this song was way underrated. But damn, they have so many great tunes, which one is best???
This was recorded and filmed during their wall concert tour "live"! They only performed it in Los Angeles and New York because it was so gigantic at the time in 1980. Pink Floyd always sounds that good in concert which is why people would leave in the middle of their own weddings to get tickets. Rodger Waters redid this show in 2012 or 2013. I suggest you watch some of that concert to see just how gigantic a Pink Floyd concert can be!!
So glad you picked this version. Don’t know if it’s Earls Court or Nassau Coliseum but it the version closest to the release of The Wall. Just spectacular!
Yes, the mother loses her husband to war and becomes overprotective towards her son. I don’t blame the mother as this a natural reaction but it does impede the child’s psychological development.
Yep, I think you have the song basically right, but it is a little deeper. The story is about a grown up who is looking to close himself of from the slings and arrows, heartbreaks and loss visited upon him in his life, not unlike the sort of things that happen to everybody. And like most people we deal with it and overcome it. Here Pink Floyd and Roger Waters in particular explore the twisted world of a character who takes every excuse as a reason to isolate himself; shut out the outside world physically, mentally and psychologically. The first half of the double album, 13 songs, is about these various bricks he finds to build his wall of isolation. Within the world of this story his mother is no different than any other. Of course his mother was concerned and afraid, but now in his mind he takes her fears and motherly concerns as his own and makes it her fault because the externalities are what drive him to be a recluse.
Hey there Tookie ! One of my favorites from "The Wall" album. This wiki link describes the plot of the story en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wall#Plot . Of course there is always more to the story. I've been enjoying your vids for a while now.
It's a trip watching this guy singing Roger Waters. I'm told I look like him, though I'm a bit older now and have a goatee that's nearly white. More often people say I look like David Carradine. I've heard it so much that when people say, " hey you know who you look like?", I smile and say," yeah, Denzel Washington". 😑
Quote from Roger Waters: "If you can level one accusation at mothers it is that they tend to protect their children too much. Too much and for too long. That's all. This isn't a portrait of my mother, although some of the , you know, one or two of the things in there apply to her as well as to I'm sure lots of other people's mothers.
Pink Floyd give equal importance to great tunes and great lyrics and they rarely have repetitive type songs with choruses. Most of their songs are like a poetic narrative, some are like political and polemical and some are emotive, some are a blend. Roger Waters did most of the lyric writing and is obviously an extremely intelligent guy if a little temperamental. Dave Gilmour was the musical genius and one of the best guitarists of all time. His solos on Comfortably Numb are absolutely beautiful! Their songs have been covered thousands of times but as far as I know, they never covered anyone else themselves. It was Pink Floyd that innovated making live gigs into massive theatrical productions that look better the further back you are. The Wall starts off with a fucking plane crashing into the stage in a ball of fire.

You got it! It's not a song about how great your mum/mom is. It's about the complex relationship and how that pans out. Great reaction.
How great is this band? No words.
