    Ohayo!!✨
Thank you guys so much for being here for my first character analysis video!
This was my first time fully editing a video by myself, and I can't wait to keep getting better.
I worked really hard on this video, and I have many more to come, I promise!
Let me know how you guys feel about the script, and make sure you comment the things you love about Sayori!💙

I loved Sayori since the first time I played the game and she helped me understanding others emotions better where I even found out by just looking at the actions of the person that something was wrong. Sadly I was too scared to talk to her because of me being antisocial, why she was harming herself for 2 years. I hate myself for that but I‘m glad that Sayori taught me this.

Gotta give Dan props for not romanctizing or demonizing mental health in DDLC since he's been around people who has depression and he even experienced himself at one point.

I very much respect Dan and both teams for putting such an emphasis on mental health both in the stories told and also with the Mental Health Matters campaigns each May.
They’ve handled these matters very responsibly, and so many people have been able to look inward after experiencing what DDLC has to offer.

Sayori is amazing because even if she finds it hard to just get out of bed, she keeps on trying. She genuinely cares about her friends, and more than that, she knows she's not okay. That's a key thing. She doesn't lie to herself saying "I'm okay" or stuff like that. She knows she's depressed. She recognizes it. And that's really hard to do.
Also, I agree on the ADHD part. Her room being so messy, getting hyperfocused on new hobbies before dropping them a week later, her love for food... I can feel all of that. She's just so complex

I’m so happy to see others talking about Sayori in this light. She was a lifeline for me during my darkest depression episode that lasted nearly 5 years, and I still treasure her character so much. Seeing all the happy things fans have drawn, wrote, animated, and modded for her brings me to tears with joy. Not because it removes her depression, but rather in because of her depression it’s so good to see her happy. She’s inspired me to be a light for others while showing me I can grow to trust others with myself too.
One day, in another game loosely connected to DDLC, I hope Dan gives a version of Sayori a happy ending. Not to undercut her story, but to show that depression can be tamed and lived with, even if it never goes away fully. A victory for those who are there to look up to and feel encouraged.
Also, give all the cookies to Sayori for me please. Spoil the cinnamon bun!

The 20 things I love about Sayori are:
    1. She's a nice person who makes other people happy.
    2. Her poems put you into her perspective.
    3. Her blue eyes match with her personality.
    4. She doesn't deserve to kill herself.
    5. Sayori deserves help from a professional just like the other Doki's.
    6. She's a ball of sunshine.
    7. She and the other girls are all best girls in their own special and unique way.
    8. She has the cutest stuffed animals in the game.
    9. She looks amazing in her outfits.
    10. You just feel really sorry for her when she tells you that she's depressed.
    11. Her bow looks awesome on her.
    12. Her chibi sprite looks so adorable when it jumps and the poses it does are just chef's kiss.
    13. Sayori deserves more friends!
    14. The main character loves her for who she is.
    15. Just sayori entirely her character is so well written.
    16. She deserves lots of love.
    17. Sayori's a bean that needs to be protected at all costs.
    18. She's the heart of the literature club and that's wholesome.
    19. Her bedroom is the best imo.
    20. She doesn't deserve to take her own life or to hang herself.
Honestly Sayori needs lots of love, support, someone who can love her for who she is, a professional who she can talk to and get anti-depressants. Sayori is the second best doki in my opinion. And deserves lots of love in her life.

The short answer is… Well, everything! Sayori is so much more than her depression, that much is certain. As someone who struggles through ADHD and potential depression, I know what it feels like to feel like your self-worth is determined by the amount you can make your friends smile. But in reality, as people, we are more than that. We have our own goals, motivations, and reasons for being alive. I think Sayori is just as deeply complex as a real person, and I will forever love her as well as the other characters in DDLC. Thank you so much for making this video, it was wonderful! 💙💖💜💚

I love Sayori’s ability to make others happy. She’s kind and compassionate, and seems to know just how to make you feel better. Her empathy and emotional intelligence are extremely noble and really show just how caring Sayori is as a person. Her ability to understand others is something many people seem to struggle with, and it’s so admirable to see her be able to put past disagreements in order to try to be better. She could be resentful, she could wallow in self-pity and act miserable around everyone, but she doesn’t. She doesn’t let her depression sabotage her relationships and her hobbies. She has a life worth living, and her kindness brings everyone closer together.

She's so strong and brave that she still gets up out of bed everyday even when it's really hard. She can so easily see when someone's dealing with something and she knows how she can help them too. I'm a little bit late to write this, but Sayori is my personal hero. She saved my life.
We know she's stronger than she thinks and gives herself credit for, but even more than that, her inner struggle and mindset about it marked the start of a change in who I am. It didn't change who I wanted to be, nor how I felt, but she showed me a different angle to see life from, and taught me about the dangers of my own mind. She helped me see the mistakes I made and showed them in a new light, not only as misconceptions or just mistakes, but toxic behavior that I wouldn't have been able to notice otherwise. She carved a new path for me to follow, not by inspiring me by looking at her strength and tenacity. She was sincere. Human. And I really liked that about her. I felt understood. I felt like I understood what was wrong with me and what I could do about it. Now that I started therapy, years after the last time I almost made the biggest mistake of my life, I can see meaning behind my own suffering and the reasons behind the damage I've inflicted upon others. I could never really improve only by myself. But that's ok. It's not thanks to her that I got to know myself better. It's not thanks to her that I now have the power to change the relationships around me, both with the people and love and myself. What she did, was let me SEE that. And she did it by being herself, being genuine vulnerable and cheerful, setting an example for me to follow, as the person I want to be.
Thank you Sayori, with all my heart. I'll continue to live and improve, and to never stop caring about the people I love, just like you could.

  • @evilmuska

Sayori was the first video game character I ever saw myself in on an emotional level. The conversation between her and the MC is so similar to conversations I've had with friends it might as well be verbatim.
People who don't have clinical depression have a very very hard time understanding what's going on in your head. Mainly because it often doesn't make any sense, even for the one experiencing it. It's like an infinite feedback loop of self-hatred. Even if I try to logically parse it out, the emotion behind it is too powerful to overcome. It's like trying to stop a tsunami by yelling at it.
You can't. You just have to take shelter, hold your breath, and hope to god you don't drown.
But with all that off my chest, I just wunna end on a more positive note and say be safe out there people. Just know that no matter how high the water gets, it's never too late to ask for a lifeline. You can get through this. You aren't alone.

Saw the post for this on Reddit. Decided to comment about the video here once I finished.
Honestly, really good work on this analysis! You did a good job talking about Sayori's traits and such!
As someone who considers Sayori their favorite of the 4 Doki's, there's plenty of reasons why I love her as a character.
    - Her design is great, and perfectly shows her cutesy, yet messy self, and while also showing hints to her lack of self-care.
    - Her personality is very cheery, energetic, bubbly, sweet, adorable, and generally has this really endearing charm to her that makes you smile.
    - Her role within the Literature Club shows just how helpful and uplifting she is to her friends, who all clearly care about her a lot and appreciate everything she does for them (Even if they do get a little annoyed with her behavior at points).
    - Her role within the original DDLC is really sad and heart-breaking. The fact that she not only considers herself worthless and a burden to others, but also how you can't do ANYTHING to stop her suicide really pulls at the heartstrings. And while I knew what was gonna happen when I first played DDLC myself, it still hurt to see such a positive character go out that way.
    - Her interactions with characters like MC, Monika, Yuri, and Natsuki can either be really fun, cute, or heart-wrenching. I especially enjoy her interactions with Monika in the Side-Stories, and while MC certainly makes a bunch of mistakes in the original DDLC, I still really enjoy his relationship with Sayori (I also REALLY like Sayori X MC. That shit is adorable, and I'm a sucker for childhood friends becoming lovers).
    - The music associated with her is an absolute jam (Aside from Sayonara), and adds on to her amazing character.
Also, it doesn't have anything to do with DDLC or DDLC+, but much of the fan-content for Sayori, I really enjoy as well. Fanart, mods, Custom Dialogues, fanfics, and more. Actually, I've written my fair share of DDLC stories as well, though much of the focus is on Natsuki (Who's my second favorite). But I do give Sayori plenty of attention as well, and I really enjoy what I made for her.
That's all I felt like saying here. Keep up the good work!

I honestly relate to Sayori. I’ve been struggling with depression for a while and I honestly feel like I have to be happy all the time for all my friends, but after playing DDLC, I felt like I didn’t have to be happy all the time for everyone, Sayori finally made me understand how much my depression could take control of my life and could make me feel just like Sayori, so…I wanna thank Sayori for making me realize how important my life is to people and how I shouldn’t let these thoughts take over my life…
    Thank you, Sayori…

This “however” and the part about how people shouldn’t talk like they’re experts hits home so well. I am tired of people who just downplay my issues because they’re too blind to see that they don’t know and should just be there to comfort me and understand me. I don’t have depression, but I avoid opening up to anyone other than my psychologist about my issues expressly because of this, because he is the only one who just knows to shut up and listen and actually knows when to talk and guide me.

God I relate to Sayori so much. Thank you for making this video and also talking about ADHD and depression. People don’t realise that ADHD really IS a disability, and it keeps you from doing SO many things most people can do… that’s part of why my depression and anxiety are so bad. Because of how often I’d get scolded or berated for people not understanding that my brain doesn’t function the same way that their brains do. This video is very very good.

I have depression and Anxiety and I relate to Sayori and Yuri a lot (apart from the obsessive love side of Yuri) Dan wrote the characters emotions very well and very realistic I love how the game doesn’t make depression and anxiety as an “atheistic” it shows how serious and dangerous it can be and how its not just feeling sad it’s a lot more like how Sayori struggles to take care of herself many people with depression find it hard to do simple tasks like taking a shower for example and getting dressed they want to but find it very hard it’s hard to explain. It also doesn’t dehumanise mental health it handles it well especially for Sayori.

Honestly, she's my favorite. Aside from being that manifestation of positivity (at least on the outside)
She's just emotionally inteligent, social buttlerfly. She's just someone i'd like to be friends with.
    And also, she is relatable...
Don't we all just see our flaws and instead of seeking for help, we just blame ourself for everything, then try to cope with the pain our blaming caused us, by procrastinating.
And of course, we don't want others to get involved.
Why help me when it obviously won't work? Why waste energy on me when i'm already doomed.
Why would someone even try to help me in the first place?
There is no benefit for doing this.
And ironically, that attitude only pushes people away from me, causing the cycle to repeat as i plunge deeper into despair.
This was supposed to be wholesome compliments towards a fictional character, right? Oops...

Sayori reminds me a lot of my best friend, she’s a ray of sunshine who can befriend anyone and always manages to put a smile on your face. She’s so precious to the world and the ones around her but fails to notice it herself. On the inside there’s so much going on which she struggles to tell others.
My best friend also confessed to me long after it had started that he dealt with similar issues, and I was so disappointed in myself. Sharing my feelings and comforting/encouraging others to do so has always been a weakness of mine as I fear physical contact and also words of affirmation. But fearing that embarrassment or awkwardness is so useless when someone’s life could be at stake. Seeing Sayori will always be a reminder of that to me. If you’re like me and struggle with things like this just know that even the smallest gesture can go a long way and that others would appreciate the care in return of their kindness. It’s always a good thing to let your friends know that you struggle with this too and to ask them what actions comfort them the most.
I feel like sharing your feelings is still not really seen as a normal thing but it’s so so so important to tell others what your boundaries and comforts are and also to ask others what theirs are. We’re always stuck in our heads but I guarantee you telling others how you feel can be so so freeing. There’s always love and acceptance for you in the world ❤❤ Just remember that

Since I already knew what was going to happen, I purposely wrote my poems to Sayori, so that she'd be happy before, well, you know. No wonder why I feel so emotionally and mentally attached to both Yuri and Sayori. Someone who has severe and untreated ADHD and depression, knowing how you don't want others to waste their time caring for you and how you sometimes wished you didn't exist just for others to be happy. People who know nothing about Mental health and neurodivergence would assume that Sayori is that annoying best friend when really there's more then that little 2D character. Yuri with anxiety and thinking that people would make fun of you because you're trying to at least make a friend and fit in, or try to find someone who has similar interests when really you can make friends with people who has different interests but have somethings in common.

Honestly, when the game first came out, Sayori kinda became the forgotten character for me, like I was more interested in the others, because I found her almost irritating? But then when I grew older, she became my favorite member. Shes a well written character and I look up to her for staying strong for that long despite all her thoughts and feelings. I dont know how to put it, but she feels very realistic. It feels like shes the one keeping her friends together and brightens the mood, which also gives her a bigger preassurer when this go happy personality is mostly an act. Its not like the other characters dont have that deepness into them as well, but I guess in the end, for me, Sayori was the most relatable one. Which is probably why, with time, I found myself closest to her out of all.
This is very random question, but how do you keep clean the big collection you have behind you?

The first one is that she taught me what it feels like to find out that someone you deeply care about has committed s**cide, and thus vow to never put anyone through what I felt. As someone who does have Depression, Sayori (and also Marianne in FE3H) hits close to home, especially as I've actually been right on the brink of having a "pre-mature game over" which makes the scene where she does "game end" herself deeply uncomfortable for me,
(it is possible Marianne also does if you don't recruit her as outside of Golden Deer where she is in your starting roster she never shows up again but I'll be assuming she is in your roster for future brackets if I bring her up again),
it's still a bit uncomfortable to mention as well, but still out of all the girls, she is the one I relate to the most, simply because I know what it is like to have almost 1:1 that exact mindset, wanting to care for everyone but not "wanting" for lack of a better word that same care in return is a slow killer,
Sayori at times feels like a wake up call as to the worst possible outcome for depression (while Marianne could be looked at as the best possible outcome where while you might not be rid of it you have more or less overcome your depression and it holds far less sway on you then it used to for Marianne this is even represented with her crest finally being named after her Paralouge in part 2, the thing that was one of if not THE main source of her mental state).
At the end of the day outside of a generic "she's cute and I like her character", it is hard for me to properly compliment Sayori, a lot about her just hits very close to home for me.

When my boyfriend and I played DDLC for the first time in 2017, we both kept talking about how similar Sayori and I were. How I am very emotionally intelligent and struggle with depression. Needless to say when we got to "the scene" we had to take a long break. There were so many tears and he begged me to never do the same thing as her. Cut to today and I found out that I was autistic the whole time for one and have been 1yr free of suicidal thoughts! Seeing how easily my own thoughts could bring me down the same path really helped me want to get better, and for that I will always be grateful to games like Doki Doki. Thanks for this video and Thanks to Team Salvato for this lovely game that I still think of to this day. And for my fellow Sayoris out there, it will never be easy but Life isn't the pain and suffering, Life is the sunshine we feel despite it. :)

I love Sayori because.. a lot of the things she struggled with, I struggle with too. Even during this video when you were listing things out, it felt like I was being personally called out. And I felt called out by Sayori, because a lot of what she'd do, like her forgetfulness and the clumsiness are things I have to deal with too. I HATE having people worry about me. To the point where I'm afraid to go places that could be dangerous, not because it's dangerous, but because if I go and get hurt, I worry my family. I feel called out by her and when people talk about her. It isn't a great thing to feel called out on. But Sayori feels comforting, as it reminds me what others see when they try to help me with how I'm feeling. When I saw her dead, it showed me, and made me feel how the people in my life would've felt if I ever took my life. Maybe even moreso, since I knew her for all of 2 days, compared to the 13, at the time, years my family would've known me for. When I saw her discredit herself and beat herself up, I wanted to make her know how wrong she was. She's a source of comfort for me. Because she shows me that even if I feel worthless, there's stuff I'll never see in myself that others see. Just like how Sayori can't see the happiness she brings everyone else. She's a sunshine and I only wish she could see that. Sometimes I wish I could see that too, when I'm struggling with my own headspace.
I love Sayori. She helps me a lot.

She's a ball of sunshine, and we all love her, and I wish she could understand how many people really love her. I love that she always helps others and that she is there for others. I love Sayori because of her cheerful attitude, her cheerful personality, her cheerful expression. I love that she actually made me happy about myself, I love that she make others happy, but yet she doesn't do that for herself. I wish she would realize how important her feelings really are and how special she is to everyone.
There's nothing about her that is bad. Nothing that is worthless, nothing that is stupid. Sayori is the heart of the festival and the heart of all of us. She's important, she's special. She has bad days, just like we do. Her amount of happiness and cheerfulness is something that I really love. Sayori will always have a special place in my heart, and she means so much to me.

I often feel like I have similar behaviors when it comes to having friends and trying to put the needs of others first. Sayori is one of my favorite characters in any video game. The way she was written was absolutely phenomenal. But her struggles and issues hit close to home with me. Sure, I may not be as silly or goofy, but her struggles are eerily similar to those of mine. Self love issues with me have been going on for around a year, for months I’d have trouble getting out of bed, usually being in a rush. This is why Sayori means a lot to me. I’ve been having symptoms of depression for awhile now, I haven’t been diagnosed so I don’t want to come to any conclusions.
Your video was really thoughtful and sensitive towards the subject matter, I appreciate it. I surely hope these feelings I have can go away, hopefully.

I'm someone who relates heavily to Sayori, as I, too, suffer from untreated depression and ADHD, and in high school, I'd cope with it in similar ways. Plus, dealing with Eldest Child Syndrome only adds to it.
I discovered this game during one of the darkest times in my life. Things were dark to the point where my parents didn't let me play the game until I recovered due to the themes of depression and suicide. But, when I played, seeing a character portrayed so realistically, who felt like how I did, and getting to play as that person's friend who cared so much about her even though it hurt her to see him care, it helped me open up to people and learn better coping mechanisms.
I still have dark days, where I feel like I'm stuck under a raincloud, but I've come so far, and I attribute some of that to this silly little anime girl.

She has given up on making herself happy. She doesn’t know how to make herself feel better, and she doesn’t care anymore. Only knowing how to make others feel better. I really love sayori since I kin her and honestly I feel better, I have long suspected I have seasonal depression, I have all the symptoms and have had bad experiences of the season in the past, this gives me so much closure, I feel insecure and like if I say anything, no one is gonna truly listen but that’s why I find comfort in sayori. She’s just like me, I too do the bubbly cheerful mask thing but i guess she gives me hope, with her legacy. And how it can help me overpower the seasonal depression. I also suspect i struggle with ADHD, it runs in most of my family and I loved the point you gave about how depression and ADHD tie in together, it really made me feel more closure. Thank you for this video, God bless you all.

When I first played DDLC as a teen going into middle school I never understood Sayori's problem's or struggles on depression. I just thought it was something that maybe you can get over (Again, this is what I thought back when I was a teen)
Looking back and replaying the game as a 18 year old I honestly understand the struggle now of self worth and depression. I struggle a lot from it as everyday gets harder and harder to get out of bed. It's like "what's the point?" at first, till you remember that others still need you. You don't stay just because you care about yourself. You stay because you care about others around you. That's how I felt when I went through an episode of not feeling like enough for everyone after failing over and over to give my bottle of happiness to them. It's hard to get through
Now as I'm writing this it's still a struggle to get through, but being selfish for your own sake is never a bad thing. You can always help others when you can, but take some time for yourself too. Depression is a horrible roommate to be around everyday, and sometimes you feel like you can't get rid of it. But you can when you take the first step of caring about yourself too. It'll be hard but it's worth it once you try💕

Sayori is great because she does her best which is what matters most, she's also very nice and caring. It's really sad that her story ended the way it did, I wish there was a way to save her.

Thank you for talking about Sayoi, she is a great and bright ball of sunshine and joy. No matter what the situation is, she is always there with a smile. I would love to give her a big and long hug, and tell her that she matters and needs to believe that

    Things I like about Sayori:
    - Her smile
    - Her personality
    - The way she cheers everyone up and stops fighting
    - Her pretty coral hair
    - Her voice (The kind peeps give her)
    - Her cookie-snatching skills
    - Her love for food
    - The way she represents depression
    - Her bright blue eyes
    - Her poems
    - Her dialogue
    - The way she began, ruined, fixed the game, and ruined it again

I love Sayori's caring, mindful, playful personality, her loyalty to her friends and her purity above all. Gotta love her design, too. She's someone I'd like to be friends with.

To be honest, the DDLC mod called "Blue skies" Give you a chance at saving her and helping her out, and I think the writing in that mod is amazing. I cannot reccommend it enough!

alright im late, but i relate to sayori and natsuki on a deep level. i know this sounds like all the other comments on this vid but i wanna get it out there
    (sad life story warning)
ive had treated adhd but undiagnosed depression and its been rocky to say the least. at the time of writing, im at one of my grey periods due to all the stresses of life. ive first hand experienced suicidal thoughts and seeing sayoris death scene genuinely made me tear up since i know how it feels, and that im so lucky that i got the help i needed before things got worse. depression is a real issue if left untreated, and this game made me aware of that and im seeking help for it. no matter how humorous, happy, and carefree someone may seem to be, theres always a darker side, as its the case with sayori, myself, as wel as many other people. natsuki i relate to due to the rough upbringing, as i grew up in a poor area with harsh conditions. thankfully my parents were truly loving and i wasnt abused.
sorry for the sob story but i wanna get across how much i relate

I knew about DDLC for years but I never was interested enough to look into the game, until a couple of months ago when a good friend of mine shared a fanfic with me about Sayori's death in a world where DDLC wasn't a game. It showed the same scene leading up to and at the moment of her death from the perspective of all the members, and reading Sayori's perspective as well as the note she leaves for each of the members showed me exactly who she was. It resonated with me cause it felt very close to some of my own experiences with depression, and in talking with that friend about the fic and sharing my experience, and her telling me a few other things, I realized how looking at her was looking into a mirror. A few days later I watched a playthrough of DDLC and when I got to the scene in her bedroom (not the death scene, the scene where she explains her depression to MC), some of the words she said were almost word for word what I said she seemed to be experiencing within her head. And when I read that, I froze up and started crying. Since then, I've been obsessed with this game and the characters in it. In fact, it actually inspired me to write my first fanfic (not finished lmao) diving into a realistic interpretation of her depression and, even with how bad it can be to deal with, you can still find happiness and love for yourself and allow others to love you.
Long tangent summarized: Sayori reminds me a lot of me, and seeing her in my own mirror *broke* me, and yet it also helped me to recognize how to help myself with my own depression.
Thank you, Juice, for this analysis video, and for shooting me in the chest with your on-point assertions of her (and my own) mental struggles and patterns she's stuck in, but also for bringing catharsis by allowing me to hear it from someone else

Feeling seen by her struggles and helping ourselves understand what may be wrong inside of us by setting an example is one of the most powerful effects a character may have, and I know it may be dumb to compare her to spiderman or superman but she's just like them! She really is a hero in her own right and reading comments like this makes me see that she really had an impact on people. She didn't suffer in vain and her effort to feel better with herself and be better for the people around her did not go unnoticed. Thank you for sharing!

I love that Sayori isn’t perfect. She’s so strong and she’s just an awesome person, and she definitely didn’t deserve all of the bad things that she went through.
