@jack brandt The first Patriot Super Bowl winner got there via the absurd call, famously called "the tuck rule game." No one, in the history of football, has been the victim of more officiating mistakes than The Raiders. The blown call on the Lytle fumble cost the country a chance to see The Raiders matched up against the Cowboys, in 78. Imagine that, Snake versus Roger the Dodger. I believe this was also the last Super Bowl that had two placekickers that kicked straight away, not soccer style, Earl Mann and Fred Cox. You don't see these type of kickers anymore.
It was a weird game for MVP selection. Davis was great but he didn’t score. Stabler had an average game and Belitnikoff only caught four passes and didn’t score. Casper actually played better than Belitnikoff and he scored a touchdown. The Raiders missed two extra points and still won by eighteen points.
This was back in the day when I would know every starter on all the good teams. There were sometimes a player or two that were replacements for injured guys that I didn’t know. For the most part there was much less turnover in player personnel over the years that gave the league continuity.
Exact same with baseball. Those powerhouse '70s teams were fixed and iconic so much so that 50 years later I can tell you the Dodgers, Reds, Yankees, A's, Phillie's, Royal's, and Padre's lineups without hesitation. Boxing was GREAT, and the Olympics still meant something. What a time to be a sports fan.
@@patrickbrowder6857 yes. I'm not even a huge baseball fan (that happens when your team is the Astros) but I could name all the infielders for the big Red Machine.

I love how when the game is over, the players just run off the field. No tee shirts, no hats, no confetti, etc. No post game on field celebration whatsoever!
He was fun, but he probably would have been fired in today's PC age. I have a MNF game from Denver in 1973 and whenever they showed a closeup of a female, he would be all over it, "Look at that one Frank!" You know the crew was all men and it was a big frat party to them. Those days are long gone from TV.
Can you post that game? I love watching old MNF games from the 1970s. Meredith, Cosell and Giffords had great chemistry, the kind you just cannot find anymore these days.
Not to get too technical but this actually was last super bowl to be completed under daylight on the west coast. Super Bowl X was the last one on the east coast.

@@davidr5961 .....stop...Raider beat the Steelers 31-28 in the regular season in 1976, then again 24-7 in the playoffs in 1976 ....and beat the Steelers again in Pittsburgh in the second game of the 1977 season. In fact, Raiders offense ran all over the Steelers defense in the '76 playoffs and the Steelers had no injuries on that side of the line. Raiders were just stronger in that part of the decade. In the 1970's, the Steelers and the Raiders played each other 14 times and had a 7-7 record. They met in the playoffs 5 times during the '70's and the Steelers had a 3-2 record although the Steeler wins were very close (immaculate reception, 24-13 and 16-10) and the Raider wins were blowouts (33-14 and 24-7). Great rivalry. Can't speak for the Vikings but they had great players but were just smaller than their AFC opponents (Dolphins, Steelers, Raiders).
Ken Stabler was my favorite all time player...went to Canton to see him get inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame...it was a bittersweet thrill without him there to give his acceptance speech but I am sure it would have been a good one with a story or two about this 1976 team...the best of all Raider teams in my opinion...they were awesome that season!
Greatest Raider play of ALL time, Stabler's TD run before Franco's Immaculate Reception. I didn't think the Raiders would ever win a Super Bowl. I thought they had no chance in this one. Raider magic.
Even though I always hated Al Davis and the Raiders. I loved John Madden. Such a loveable talented coach and broadcaster. He passed away 12/28/21. R.I.P. Uncle John. Thanks for so many wonderful memories. Love You!
My Vikes ! 🏈💖⭐️ this was a beautiful/ colorful Super Bowl even though Minnesota was NEVER in any of the 4 Super Bowl losses 😳 Blocking Ray Guy’s punt was the best part of this game ! “ Old Man Willie ! “ 🌈
McClanahan fumble was the difference. If the Vikings score Stabler would have started throwing pics and the raiders would not have run the ball. Minnesotas secondary would have had a couple pick sixes and Fran would have not forced that ball that willie got if the vikes were ahead.
The most winnable was against Pittsburgh as they only lost by 10. The one against the Chiefs they would’ve done better had they not gotten sloppy with the ball. But yes, they were completely outmatched against Miami and Oakland
My dad was a life long Raiders fan, he tragically passed away in 2015 and ever since the Raiders have been 1 of my 2 teams as I just don't have the heart to hate on them. To see this game in 2020, all I can do is imagine watching this through the 11 year old eyes my father would have had at that time and feeling what he would have felt seeing his favorite team win their 1st Superbowl.
1:39:15 Jack Tatum demonstrates the difference between football then and football now. That hit on Sammy White would probably get him ejected, fined, and possibly placed under arrest today. All it drew back in 1977 was an instant replay. Also, Sammy White hangs onto the ball despite being decapitated and being named “Sammy.”
While it definitely shows the difference between eras, I think the change was for the better. It should have never been legal to target someone's head like that. You didn't have to have all the medical information on concussions to know that knocking someone out is a cheap blow. And that was a cheap blow.
Actually Tatum would have been legal with that hit today. He hit with a shoulder and did not hit the receiver in the head/neck area. The penalty would have been on Raiders number 26 for going to the Head. Tatum was legal watch the slow-motion replay.
Back when they hadn't the foggiest clue about the long-term brain-damaging effects of frequent hits and blows to the head. A lot of these guys ended up with CTE and died with it, including Stabler. The other great Raider quarterback from back in those days, Jim Plunkett, gave an interview about how much his life sucks now -- he's in constant pain and has serious trouble remembering things. The bodies are bigger and stronger and faster -- but the brains remain the same.
This was the first time I saw Football game back in 1975; ever since than I got hooked to watch the Raiders Games every Season. I didn't understood NFL then, but it sure feels good when your team wins.....
Amazing to see men simply competing against men without needing to overreact/overcelebrate/complain. Additionally, the game is simply being called, no broadcasters trying to overtalk and make it about themselves and no excessive marketing and advertising.
@Francis McCloskey . . . I agree with your sentiments. The way TV coverage of the NFL has been handled during the past 20 years has made it nearly unwatchable for me.
I hate the overdone TV graphics and players celebrating every first down. For these old guys, it was a day at the office. Make a first down or a big play, they'd just walk back to the huddle for the next play.
1:43:09 "At this point, the Raiders had two options. They could fence and parry, to protect their lead. Or they could attack! To destroy and demolish!"--John Facenda
Still had a handful of players from HBC schools in this game. More defensive lineman helping up QBs than you'll ever see today. No obvious jawing going on during the game. It was a gentleman's game back then.
I WISH I GREW UP IN THIS ERA OF RAIDERS FOOTBALL. THIS IS WHAT COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE IS ALL ABOUT!!! 1976 NFL SUPER BOWL 11# CHAMPIONS!!! MVP: FRED BILENTIKOFF
God bless John Madden the architect of teaching the game of professional football to the masses. He was a man well loved. Someone who lived life with gusto and passion. He was definitely a hurricane but at his center, at the heart, you as an observer felt a quiet confidence that this man knew the game of football and how to live the things he loved.
The hit on Sammy White at 1:39:20 Been in NFL (Films) highlights ever since. But not only is that an illegal hit today, Jack Tatum would be penalized for "targeting/hitting a defenseless player", "taunting" (as he stands over White), and probably fined by the league. Amazing how times change peoples' perceptions of events.
Jack Tatum was very dirty player who used "the hook"to try to break people's neck and finally did in a preseason game to Daryl Stingley of Patriots in 78.Rules were finally changed because of him
Ben: on the Daryl Stingley play, Daryl's momentum carried his head right into Tatum. No question Tatum saw the ball zing by, and it being a preseason game he could have let up but that particular hit wasn't dirty, especially for those times.
PRHILL: I agree it's no longer football but for me it's because of things like the extra-point line and the touchback line being changed. I don't have a problem with new rules trying to protect players.
He definitely would have got a helmet to helmet penalty. I didn't think he stood over him all that long but yes, the way he puts his shoe right next to Sammy's head after the hit would be taunting
Madden is honestly the king of football. All living generations have appreciation for 3/4 realms he excelled in (we don’t know how he would’ve been as a player)

In the super bowl era, the 1976 Raiders are so underrated among the great 1-year title teams in league history. Teams besides the obvious '72 Dolphins, '85 Bears, '89 49ers etc. overshadow to date the best Raiders team ever.
I know Geek that all of the sb's until the Pats/Rams game following the '01 season (first ever Feb. championship game)was played in January. My point was that this SB Raiders/Vikings was the last ever one played before January 15. FYI. The NFL went to the current 16 game regular season soon after and the first prime time super bowl (kickoff around 6pm et) was the next year (Dallas/Denver.) Finally before the AFL/AFC merger created the super bowl, following the '66 season, the NFL Championship game was played by no later than New Years Day.

Me,too. I turned 56 in May. Remember this game like it was yesterday. At one point late in the game, Bud Grant is laughing. It's clear winning a championship game was not THAT important to him. AS A RESULT, his teams played like it. The Raiders were just toying with the Vikes. The Vikings did not look like a SB team IN ANY OF THE 4 GAMES. Watchng THIS GAME again, they look BAD. Bud Grant may have been a great regular season coach, but he absolutely sucked in Super Bowls. He was completely outcoached in 4 SBs. Outscored 95-34, never led in any of the games, and the team looked dreadful, slow, and predictable. They never tried anything creative and Tarkenton was garbage in the 3 he played in. Absolute crap.

Basic hard ass football. Who remembers underrated players like Mike Siani, Marv Hubbard, Dan Connors, Charlie Smith, Warren Wells...etc., etc.
I went to this game when I was ten. Merlin Olsen got us tickets. He and my dad grew up together in little Logan, UT and remained good friends throughout their lives. Casper actually played better than Belitnikoff and he scored a touchdown. The Raiders missed two extra points and still won by eighteen points.
Curt Gowdy may just have had the best voice of all time. Him being teamed with Don Meredith just doesn't get any better than that.
Don Criqui was right up there with his magnificent voice for football
Gowdy's great, Meredith stinks.
@@dominictant Naah, that's just tuna salad in your moustache.
Gowdy will always be the voice of MLB for me..70's baseball was the best...
Please! Meredith was a TERRIBLE commentator! Did not shut up! Constantly interrupting the call! Worse than Howard Cosell!
This was back in the day when I would know every starter on all the good teams. There were sometimes a player or two that were replacements for injured guys that I didn’t know. For the most part there was much less turnover in player personnel over the years that gave the league continuity.
Before players made real money.
I remember watching this game as though it was yesterday. What a bunch of great players the Raiders and the Vikings had. Kenny The Snake Stabler was my favorite and Dave Casper was a monster. Thank you for the memories.
Thanks for posting !!!
As a kid this was the 1st Super Bowl I watched from beginning to end. I miss the day time Super Bowls. Greed really has ruined the NFL. Used to love the NFL, not so much anymore.
indeed. all sports pretty much stink now. greed and stupid athletes that look and play like robots. is it real or just a video game? no one knows anymore. every game looks the same. sad indeed
This was my 1st superbowl too.....this was the most complete raiders team ever.....great watching it again
Much better having night games
This is the first Superbowl I remember watching the pregame show for.
Back when players still had class!! Didn't act like they won the lottery on a 1st down!!
So damn true.
Yeah, but....but....but....players can't have any fun unless they're allowed to act like showgirls after they score a touchdown. I mean, not a single player in this game had any fun. [/sarcasm]

Super Bowl XI was the LAST Super Bowl played in total daylight
keith clark yeah it was although I think Super Bowl 12 between Denver and Dallas was also during the day but since it was it the Superdome it was hard to tell. I hate the fact the Super Bowls at night now I don't see any reason why I can't be at 4 Eastern Time 1 in the West.
I wish they would go back to it, and natural grass as well. Today's SBs feel colorless and sterile, like the game is in a big shopping mall.

Kenneth Futch And it was another boring game.

I agree.....and Jim Marshall
Also Otis Taylor - he was Terrell Owens before there was a Terrell Owens.
I love how when the game is over, the players just run off the field. No tee shirts, no hats, no confetti, etc. No post game on field celebration whatsoever!
Love these classics games !and even though I'm a packers fan i respect the raiders blue blood franchise history if that makes sense
I love that the NFL is posting full games. I MISS FOOTBALL!!!
I miss Don Meredith. He brought a breath of sanity to the game. And hell of a QB as well.
He got beat up in the Ice Bowl I felt bad for him I think he broke his nose dandydon should have won a Superbowl rest in peace brother
And he taught us that it was OK to like iced tea in winter.

This is it Curtis! Yeah!! Snake and company finally brought the title to Oakland during the 76 NFL season. Greatness.
This was the last Super Bowl to finish under daylight.
Not to get too technical but this actually was last super bowl to be completed under daylight on the west coast. Super Bowl X was the last one on the east coast.
Yeah why does it have to start so damn late, it's on Sunday. Start at 4PM ET, still 1PM PT plenty late enough.
They should bring it back. They seem to forget people are drinking and partying and then got to go to work the next day.
@@che1925 The league doesn't care about that. All they care about is the $$. Young fans of teams who are taken to the games by their dads in cold weather regions(Green Bay, Pittsburgh, New England) that begin at 6:30pm where the night time temperature is 20 degrees and drops to low teens or single digits.
I mean if the NFL wants to grow their fanbase in London, maybe they shouldnt start their postseason games so late.
If the NFL was still like this, I'd still be a fan. That Tatum hit was like a car crash, helmet goes one way, chinstrap the other but he held onto the ball!
man that raiders team was loaded.
LOL In more ways than one!!
They were fortunate to catch a steelers team that year, plagued with injuries
They had a super great left side offensive line; skill players they had a legendary wide receiver other than that regular skill players

Its easy to forget how good Dave Casper was. He was the essential offensive playmaker and you know The Snake trusted him.

Rest In Peace John Madden. Thank you for helping my Raiders win their first super bowl and for idolizing the nfl video game franchise known as Madden.
I was also 11 during Super Bowl 11. I was in Glendale, California watching the
Raiders win. Most Marines know why they are called Raiders.
No kidding!
While it definitely shows the difference between eras, I think the change was for the better. It should have never been legal to target someone's head like that. You didn't have to have all the medical information on concussions to know that knocking someone out is a cheap blow. And that was a cheap blow.
@todd long It would only be illegal because he hit with his helmet. But if Tataum hit him a little lower, that would still be a legal hit today.
@@kennethsmith1636 Ask any receiver if given a choice would he rather take a hit to his head or to his knees, he choose his head
Actually Tatum would have been legal with that hit today. He hit with a shoulder and did not hit the receiver in the head/neck area. The penalty would have been on Raiders number 26 for going to the Head. Tatum was legal watch the slow-motion replay.
Back when quarterbacks played tackle football along with everyone else!
AND called the plays
Back when they hadn't the foggiest clue about the long-term brain-damaging effects of frequent hits and blows to the head. A lot of these guys ended up with CTE and died with it, including Stabler. The other great Raider quarterback from back in those days, Jim Plunkett, gave an interview about how much his life sucks now -- he's in constant pain and has serious trouble remembering things. The bodies are bigger and stronger and faster -- but the brains remain the same.

Bad Cornflakes yeah. They have looked awesome over the last 18 or so years of continual losing seasons. Just lose baby.

The hit on Sammy White at 1:39:20
Been in NFL (Films) highlights ever since.
@@bensantiago4557 Was NOT a dirty player. Simply hit hard. Used the hook to break up passes, not break people's necks.
Madden is honestly the king of football. All living generations have appreciation for 3/4 realms he excelled in (we don’t know how he would’ve been as a player)
This is the game that really woke me up to the NFL and to love the Oakland Raiders, I lived in San Jose and watched it at a friends house just to be close to his sister. I don’t think I payed much attention to here at all during the whole game.

In the super bowl era, the 1976 Raiders are so underrated among the great 1-year title teams in league history. Teams besides the obvious '72 Dolphins, '85 Bears, '89 49ers etc. overshadow to date the best Raiders team ever.
FYI. The last sb (probably forever in the early part of January (1977).)
AmericanGiant100 No they were all in January until the NFL added a bye week and expanded to 32 teams
The Dolphins won back to back in 1972 AND 73, they weren't a great 1 year title team. Do some homework first
AFL/AFC merger in '66? The first year of the AFC was 1970 season.
Alan Page was one of the best defensive linemen to ever play in the league.

Bud Grant may have been a great regular season coach, but he absolutely sucked in Super Bowls. He was completely outcoached in 4 SBs. @@vincentmesa7024 Was that the game where Rob Lytle's fumble was called a non-fumble? A devastating and unfair moment!
Raiders were always a good/great team 60's/70's especially, and they kept it simple - They usually had a tough fullback/RB/ a huge talented O-Line/ a deep threat on one side and "possession" type receivers on the other/ great pass catching TE's/ Talented D-line/ active LB's and a mean DIRTY group of DB's.
