Just think of the numbers he could have put up if Stabler had a stronger arm and could throw the ball more than 45 yards down field? Since Stabler had such limited range he had to make his living on the deep comeback routes.
Biggest travesty in nfl in my opinion. Better numbers than Swann, but branch played for the raiders. Met him once very nice man. Now they will put him in the HOF since he has passed. Sad. And respect coming from a steeler fan. Raiders and Steeler fans wont agree on much, at least some of us can appreciate players for what they have done, not just the team they played for. Thanks!!
I've always been a Raiders fan and it's good to remember their glory days. Too bad there are no more quality men playing today,. Men who loved the game more than their own aggrandizement. Oh well, I'll always have my memories,
In 1980 I was 11 and went to my first game. Great seats, right behind the Raiders bench. I just stared at them, mouth open. They were GODS to me. Matuszak. Hendricks. Hayes. Millen. Casper. Plunkett. van Eegen. Martin. Ray Guy, the first epic punter ever. I was just reading about this team. Lester Hayes had 13 INT's that year. The Defense had 35. I even was ecstatic that I got to go to a Raley's grocery store to meet Marc Wilson... lol
The 1980 Raiders season epitomizes the entire organization. Misfits with no business winning, robbing that gold fom everyone else in true Raider fashion. It doesn’t get better than that.
@@Strummie Coming out of the AFC Championship by beating the Oilers, Browns and certainly Chargers that year was more impressive than easily defeating the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.

Perhaps Al Davis did Jim Plunkett a favor by sitting him those first two years. He had been thrown around and banged up in both New England and San Fran. By the time he got his big break, he was more than ready and delivered on the promise he had coming out of Stanford. Just a shame he beat my Eagles in the big game lol.
Cedric hardeman was a awsome defensive lineman , not given near the credit he deserves. I think he is H O F er. He anchored the 49ers GOLD RUSH of the 70'S , BEFORE finally getting a ring with the RAIDERS. I met on several occasions. Great person.
Always remember HATING the ‘80 Raiders & thinking all season “THIS is the week they will tank”, because my household were Broncos🏈 & Seahawks🏈 fans. Well, they “never tanked” all the way to the title & I was SO distraught... But, in hindsight, they were indeed GREAT & supremely talented ~ they deserved to win 3 Super Bowls = a lotta RESPECT! And Plunkett’s 1980 journey back & to the top surpasses any movie script; looking back, I didn’t allow myself to appreciate how special that was, along with his leadership.
And THATS why the Raiders got fans everywhere. Yea theay STINK IT UP some seasons, but you GOTTA LOVE IT when the MISFITS WIN!!! RAIDER NATION FOR LIFE🍺💀🚬(And I grew up in WHITTIER, so...)

That offensive line played so well for Jim Plunkett that year. They had always been a great OL, but they were getting beat before Plunkett got in there. And they worked their asses off to protect him, and he responded by hanging in and making the best decisions, and throws, of his career. What a season.
That was a great season…. Plunkett was one of those great players who ended up on bad teams…. Somehow, he got another chance, after being out of action for two years… a truly amazing (and inspirational) comeback!

Great Raider teams during those years. I always hoped for a Cowboys vs. Raiders Super Bowl during that time period because that would have been the most intriguing matchup.
2016 was the closest we had to a Dallas vs Oakland SB match, but the Raiders lost Carr to an injury and were knocked out of the playoffs and Dallas lost by like a touchdown against Green Bay in a big upset comeback

The ghost to the Post, the heidy game, The Snake beating Tarkington and Company and Jim Plunkett and Company giving us two Lombardi trophies. All great moments in the history of the franchise. And soon enough the team rehires Jon Gruden and gives him full control will be among them.
The 2021 Raiders team should watch this documentary again and again. The 1980's team had to overcome adversity and won the Superbowl. This year we have to overcome adversity again and this time history will repeat itself and we will win the Superbowl again. This is our year. This is a team of destiny. Do it for Mr Al Davis. Just win baby!!!
Joe Burrow intentionally ran toward the ref running out of bounds bc he knew as soon as he threw it the ref would blow the whistle, right before the catch, ref blows whistle everyone stops and TD. Referees huddle deem the play unchallengable
This is the most underrated team in sports. Nobody gave them a chance, and went out and brought home a Super Bowl trophy. To this day, the 1980 Oakland Raiders were the best team ever, in my opinion. To think they could have been playing in LA in 1980, but thanks to a court injunction, the Super Bowl trophy was brought back to Oakland. The 1980 Oakland Raiders are the finest championship team out of all-time great Raiders teams ever.
andan04 ok I was stretching it a little. However, I still think that the 1980 Oakland Raiders can compete with the 1976 Oakland Raiders and the 1983 Los Angeles Raiders teams. I said, in my opinion, the 1980 Raiders were the best of the best in Oakland Raiders history. They came from out of no where to beat three teams to get to the Super Bowl. On top of that, they went and beat a Cleveland Browns team that should’ve won, and a San Diego Chargers team that should’ve won their game against Oakland. That didn’t happen. They went on to beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XV, that beat the Raiders earlier in the season, in Philadelphia. Once more, I was there at the Coliseum in 1980. I saw it all unfold. I saw Dan Pasterini gets his leg broke in Oakland against The Kansas City Chiefs. Jim Plunkett threw five picks to lose to the Chiefs 31-17. However, after winning against the Chargers in Oakland the following week, which was week six, that was a start of a six game winning streak that brought us a Super Bowl trophy back to Oakland. Stretching the fact that the Raiders may not had a superstar player, but they got the job done when it counted.
I envy your experience as a Raiders fan that season. You're right, it's always far more fun when your team wins and they weren't expected to. (Probably why Pats fans have seemed so joyless during this current run haha.) When the Raiders sat at 2-3 after five games in 1980, I'm sure very few outside of that locker room were thinking playoffs, let alone Lombardi trophy. Must have been a blast. I think I misunderstood your original post. I thought you meant they were the best team ever, as in NFL history. But if you're saying best team in franchise history, then yes, there's a case to be made there.
andan04 thank you my friend. I'll say this about the 1980 Oakland Raiders. Now, if it meant comparison between 1970s Steelers teams, 49ers in 1980's, the 1990s Dallas Cowboys, or the 2000s New England Patriots teams, the 1980 Oakland Raiders rank last in all of them. However, iny opinion, the Raiders rank among the best of the best in all-time Raiders history bar none.
1980 was my favorite Raider season of all-time. The Plunkett resurrection was an incredible story and this made up for 1974 when they were clearly the best team in the NFL and didn't win it all.
I remember that was the beginning of the end of the Steelers Dynasty. Their players were getting older and they missed their chance to bridge the 70’s to the 80’s by not taking Dan Marino in the 83 draft!!!

@@jerrybrownell3633 raiders were wild card in 1980 , won the west in 1983. Even though the Seahawks sweeped them in 1983 the raiders had the overall better record and won the division. The raiders hosted and won the afc CHAMPIONSHIP game that year.
@@dennissaunders5247 -That's why the Defending Champion Washington Redskins were overwhelming favorites in SB XVIII. The Raiders were a Wild Card. I will have to research it and get back to you.
@@dennissaunders5247 - I am totally wrong and you are correct. I would have sworn Los Angeles was a wild card. And I am a die hard Raiders fan. I sincerely apologize. Raiders went 12-4. Defending Champ Washington was 14-2. L.A. was all over them building a 21-3 halftime lead.
And they did it convincingly putting a hurt on defending champion and heavily favored Redskins 38-9
Gene Upshaw died suddenly of pancreatic cancer a year and a half after this was made. Matt Millen is very ill and needs a heart transplant. Let's hope the Hall elects Jim Plunkett while he is still with us.

Steelers fan who can't believe Cliff Branch isn't in the HOF.
Just think of the numbers he could have put up if Stabler had a stronger arm and could throw the ball more than 45 yards down field? Since Stabler had such limited range he had to make his living on the deep comeback routes.
Rip cliff
Jack Moses THANK YOU
Biggest travesty in nfl in my opinion. Thanks!!
Thank you, RIP Cliff!
That Monday Night Football theme is magic. In fact all the NFL Film music is just epic.

I even was ecstatic that I got to go to a Raley's grocery store to meet Marc Wilson... lol
Extremely Well Said!

I watch this about a dozen times a year. It's my favorite season as a lifelong Raiders fan
My team... 76 and 83 were more dominant teams but this was their finest moment as AL said.
Agree with that.

I remember all of these players and these days.
I miss all the players who are gone and I miss the players still with us.
Both Jim Plunkett and Tom Flores belong in the Hall of Fame!!
29:24 Cedric Hardeman talking to Matt Millen. Passed away yesterday at age of 70. Rest Easy sir.
Cedric hardeman was a awsome defensive lineman , not given near the credit he deserves. I think he is
H O F er.

That offensive line played so well for Jim Plunkett that year. They had always been a great OL, but they were getting beat before Plunkett got in there. And they worked their asses off to protect him, and he responded by hanging in and making the best decisions, and throws, of his career. What a season.
Great. I love old games and documentaries.

Matt Millen, my all time favorite football player , in high school I was even compared to him 💥👍👍
This is the most underrated team in sports.
Hall of Famers on both sides of the ball and dominance when it mattered. I'll agree with underrated, but best team ever is stretching it.
andan04 ok I was stretching it a little.
Nice profile pic, by the way. Is that Bobby Hebert with the USFL Invaders?
1980 was my favorite Raider season of all-time. The Plunkett resurrection was an incredible story and this made up for 1974 when they were clearly the best team in the NFL and didn't win it all.

I remember that was the beginning of the end of the Steelers Dynasty. Their players were getting older and they missed their chance to bridge the 70’s to the 80’s by not taking Dan Marino in the 83 draft!!!
Was that the year they took the defensive lineman that got paralyzed in a car wreck?
