The fact that the Chargers practically bent over backwards to want to stay in San Diego and was not getting any help from the city was purely heartbreaking. Even though the Chargers were basically pushed to Los Angeles, in reality they belong in San Diego and always will be considered.

very sad passing--Mr. Olson developed mesothelioma-he sued NBC over asbestos exposure which he believed came from the set of a show he did "Father Murphy"--I believe Mr. Olsen passed away before it went to litigation
There simply isn't anything like hearing Keith Jackson call college football, Dick Enberg & Merlin Olsen call AFC playoff games, Pat Summerall & John Madden call NFC playoff games and Frank Gifford, Howard Cosell & Dandy Don call Monday Night games. All but Madden are gone now. So sad, but so nice to be able to rewatch some of these great games with these all-time great announcers.
Dan the Man gotta add harry calas to that great list. Tho harry was only on the radio. Was a great voice for nfl on the radio. Sadly, harry has passed as well
That's a great memory, all right. My brothers and I and some friends drove to the airport (from Sacramento) to greet them when they got in. What a night!
They've also have had just one winning season since 2002 til now in 2020. Even more remarkable really if u think about it. Talk about futility. A commitment to being sorry.
@@OutlookPositive No ... it's FAR less remarkable. It's pretty easy to be shitty for a long time and there are always numerous teams going through exactly that. Everything about the NFL was better back then, from the simple, informative but understated introduction from the low-key and professional announcers, a screen that was devoted entirely to the game without the clutter of useless graphics, two teams of determined athletes giving it their all, as opposed to today's prima donna millionaire thugs who worry more about their image and "brand" than the quality or intensity of their play, and best of all, no challenges to slow things down and make you wait and wonder after every big play, "will it count?"

Kinda funny that the person who recorded this game on VHS tape was watching it on a Las Vegas television station. 40 years later It will become their new home. Just a little trivial thing I noticed.
Jeffrey Beshears .....all they had to do was build them a new stadium....that stadium is worse than the old Municipal Stadium in Cleveland....I’m surprised the A’s are still there....it’s almost like the city of Oakland doesn’t want these teams....it’s ridiculous
Love all of the Bay Area references in this game. Fouts, Plunkett, Muncie and ex and future Forty Niners, respectively Hardman and Dean, Kelcher, Johnson.

@@williamfluck148 I gotta hand it to you, you're a class act. That game, and the Superbowl that followed felt like hot coals in my Christmas stocking. I'm just trying to figure out what did Raider Nation do so bad to deserve it lol.
A whole lot of things were so much better then, William. A whole lot. I feel sorry for kids these days. At least we had the great opportunity to witness it.
I feel for Jim Plunkett, who has suffered from injuries sustained over a long NFL career. The players gave so much, too bad that the health of players was not at a premium.
As an official Raider Hater, I will say that the one and only Raider I ever liked (while on the team) was Jim Plunkett. It's a damn shame he sat on the bench in favor of the laughably bad Marc Wilson for so long. Kind of like benching Marcus Allen. Dumb ass Al Davis.
I heard that too. He recently stated if he wishes he hadn't played anywhere near as long as he did, and at times even regrets playing football at all. Today, if he doesn't do what amounts to a total physical therapy, reflexology program, stretching and yoga on a daily basis, he's in near constant pain. Dude gave everything to the sport. :-(
I grew up an Eagles fan who'd won the NFC earlier that day. I remember hoping the Raiders would win because I wasn't sure the Eagles could beat the Chargers in the Super Bowl. The Chargers had so much firepower. When the Raiders won, I remember thinking, "We got this!" We didn't. LOL!
This was a weird season. Plunkett was considered washed up and Al Davis picked him up for $100 off waivers in 1978. After Plunkett took over starting in 1980 he went 9-2 after a 2-3 start with Pastorini.
I used to think the same thing till I looked at his regular season stats even after he went to the Raiders. Unfortunately I now the he really was WAAAY to streaky and inconsistent to have his big moments in some big games overcome that. I would feel different if he could even manage to hold onto the starting job for any length of time for the Raiders, but there too he could never quite put a full season together.
@@brockgeorge777 I agree but along the same line of thinking I think Bradshaw should not be in either. 4 super bowls yes but his stats are awful, Pittsburgh won with tremendous defense and despite Bradshaw.
@@jacob9538 I tend to agree. …Though he was absolutely brilliant in his 4 Super Bowl appearances. (Luck and GREAT receivers sure never hurt!) indeed in no other era, and no other team could his silly interceptions be tolerated in exchange for the. big plays. I think his defenders would say he won twice as many Super Bowls and-flaws aside-was somewhat less up and down in the Regular Season than Plunkett.
@@brockgeorge777 yeah but me personally, i think neither should be in. i think they got it right by not having plunkett in there, but bradshaw- i just checked out of curiosity cuz i knew his completion % was always atrocious and wow- in 5 out of his first 7 seasons his completion % was below 50%, for a career mark of 51.9% with a career 70.9 rating.
I'm so glad Plunkett had the chance to play for a team that provided some blocking for him. I remember all the crap he took here in New England after being a number one draft pick.
I know, as a Patriots Fan, I ask myself why couldn’t have Plunkett have that same O-Line Protection Tom Brady had during his years in New England. Over and over I have been preaching this, but no one listens. Finally I find someone with a voice of reason. I guarantee you: A): Miami would have had their perfect season in 1972. B): The Patriots could have overcome Miami and Pittsburgh during the 1970’s and won a couple of Super Bowls. Unfortunately, the Patriots O-Line during The Plunkett ERA was shaky at best.
Great observation. Vinny Testaverde deserved the same chance in the beginning of his career, but he was provided the same protection in Tampa as Plunkett received in New England.
It doesn't end with Lester, what about Cliff Branch, Tom Flores and Jim Plunkett, not to mention Steve Atwater (and I'm a Raiders fan too). to my mind selecting Troy Polomalu ahead of Atwater is bullshit...
Not sure why that is crazy. Great player. I hated the Raiders, but I loved Lester Hayes. Especially great when they still allowed stickum and he would coat his hands in that stuff.
What about Rob? Probably forgotten, but at this juncture of his career he was plagued with a speech disability. (There was a cringe-inducing moment after Oakland won the SB, where Tom Brookshier was so discomfited interviewing Hayes that he literally cut him off and turned to another Raider.) But he underwent speech therapy and by the next season he’d become a go-to guy for quotes & wisdom. I don’t think his Raider career ended well.
Amen! I loved the late games on NBC (especially in the old AFL days). My mother would be fixing some delicious supper while me & my brother would be watching. Man I miss those days!
@ SLIP NORRIS. Lester Hayes was not as good a defensive CB as his statistics indicated during the years when the NFL allowed players to put the gooey substance called "Stickum" on their uniforms in order to get a better grip on the football. Hayes got to the point where he was literally covered from shoulders to shoes with "Stickum" and the next year the NFL prohibited players from utilizing that product during games. After the league banned "Stickum", Hayes interceptions declined dramatically!
@ TehAsdfg. You misread my comment. I didn't say that Lester Hayes wasn't a good or even a very good CB. I clearly stated that he was not as good a CB as his inflated statistics during the years he used the gooey substance called "Stick-em" indicate! When the NFL ,because of Lester Hayes, banned the use by players of "Stickum", Hayes' interceptions went dramatically down! Hayes and Haynes were only one factor in why the Raiders defense shut down the Washington Redskins' offense in Super Bowl 18. The Raiders' defensive line and linebackers stopped Washington RB John Riggins from having a big game in that Super Bowl!
@@michaelbarlow6610 I remember the stickem back then and it wasn't hardly an advantage. We used it in basketball and it wore off very quickly and it wasn't like he carried a can of it with him to spray on his hands every play. The gloves they use today are a million times better.
@@michaelbarlow6610 it was legal to use stickum so that means all other defensive backs had the opportunity to use it how many had 13 picks like Lester the interceptor?
doclew28 Chargers leaving San Diego for Los Angeles was the stupidest relocation ever especially they're the unwanted team here in Los Angeles (Rams actually made sense because they were here before)
Christopher Velasco yeah you are correct. After over 40 years i'm DONE with the current raiders when the raiders move to Las Vegas. Won't stand for a 2nd time they leave my city.
doclew28 I wanted the Chargers to stay in my hometown of San Diego while I wanted the Raiders to stay in Oakland there was only one thing that actually came true which was the Rams returning here in Los Angeles. I really feel bad for Oakland again especially this shit is gonna happen again in two years. The Raiders better win a Super Bowl or two before they move to the gambling capital of America
Christopher Velasco Mark Davis is an IDIOT and he's screwing this thing up. I just cannot support that guy. So I will just be watching these old vids to get my fix.
Don Coryell was a great offensive mind. But not a great head coach and a terrible talent evaluator. 1. Coryell's playoff record was just 3-7 with no Super Bowl appearances. 2. Coryell's teams always saw their defense deteriorate. The 1979 Chargers had a good defense but by 1981, their defense ranked last. 3. Coryell drafted poorly. From 1979-85, Kellen Winslow was his only great draft pick. James Brooks was a good pick but he got into the doghouse. Irvin Phillips, Billy Ray Smith, and Gary Anderson were mediocre. 4. Coryell traded high draft picks for veterans, some of whom went bust. Chuck Muncie and Wes Chandler were good trades (although New Orleans wound up drafting Rickey Jackson with the Muncie pick). John Cappelletti was a bust. Willie Buchanan's best days were behind him. Tim Fox had nothing left in the tank.
@coffeeinthemorning He has two rings, Namath has one, Plunkett has better stats over the same amount of games. So why is Namath in the HOF, because of one game? Plunkett has better stats than Bart Starr, Bob Griese and Roger Staubach, and they all have 2 rings, like Plunkett.
The NFL just had a more "Welcoming" feel back then. Watching this broadcast and seeing the old Charger Cart 10:41 . The fan signs at the stadium just reminds me how much the league has lost in warmth.
I'm sure Jack Murphy (the SD sports columnist who helped bring major league sports to San Diego and who the stadium was named after) would be deeply saddened by what happened to the Chargers and their move to LA.
@@davidhalcon5594 Write a letter to Jeff Bezos--he's worth ~$180 billion. The NFL has been trying to get him to buy a franchise and join their owner's fraternity. A franchise and building a new stadium for Bezos would cost him "pocket change".
@coffeeinthemorning That's all well and good, but Namath's overall numbers weren't that much different than Plunkett's numbers. That said, I do think Plunkett is a special case: how many other guys win Rookie of the Year, then gets his brains kicked in for years after that, and ultimately recovers to win the big one twice? Bums don't win multiple Super Bowls.
As much as I loved Pat Summerall, Dick Enberg was my favorite sports announcer of all-time. NOBODY brought the excitement of the moment of the game like Dick Enberg.

God damn.... I'm not a Raider, nor Charger fan, but I truly MISS THESE DAYS. Football was friggin FUN back then. What a game---makes me incredibly nostalgic
Soooooooooooooooo true. No divas on the field. No idiots who thought it was all about THEM and not the team. No morons giving THEMSELVES nicknames. And the best announcers the game ever had.
Ironically, it was these Raiders who would start the downward slide of the NFL when they moved to LA2 years later and brought on the era of franchise free agency. The League had been stable since the 50'sand the AFL was brought in as a whole entity with most of its rivalries intact in 1970.
Um, there were probably more thugs back in 1980. The difference is we now think Domestic Violence is a serious crime, not a marriage squabble like they did in 1980
plenty of thugs, however, the style of play and the rules made scoring points much more difficult. When a team scored 30, they usually EARNED it. Now w/ the rules changes and pass interference the norm instead of the exception, 30-30 is common at halftime. RIP NFL.
I don't know why you feel the need to compare them to black guys...but considering both got shots as QB's and coaches before black players did in the NFL, it's a dumb comparison.
Plunkett was a Native American... and Flores was Hispanic. Your argument that if they were people of color would have helped them in the HoF is invalid. The reason they are not in is the fault of the MEDIA who are the ones who vote players into the HoF. Blame THEM for a year after year choice of denying those guys their bust
It's really a shame that Merlin Olson never got to play in a Super Bowl like his counter part the great Bob Lilly did. One of the all-time greats for sure.
No team in NFL history has ever -- over a six-year time period -- lost as many games as the San Diego Chargers did between 1980 and 1985 *despite* scoring 24 or more points. That's what made them unbearably frustrating to watch.
Great stat - terrible to have lived through though thats for sure - suffering as you and I must have…They could have drafted Mike Singletary - and Howrad slusher, Dans Fouts agent - had such a bad relationship with Gene Klein that when Haynes came available via trade or (free agent perhaps) he went to the raiders instead off SD. he could have really helped in SD…
I was a cowboys fan of the 70s, i cant remeber to many game,s when the cowboys beat the raider,s during a regular season game, or preseason, the one,s i did watch the raider,s allways won the game
I know I've been a Raider fan for 50 years the closest actually came it was in 77 when Dallas beat Denver in the Super Bowl the Raiders lost to Denver in a championship game and got ripped off when Rob Lytle fumble at the one-yard line they were that close
There were six times between 1967 and 1980 that the Cowboys and Raiders were in their respective league/conference title games in the same season so yeah there could've been at least one Raiders-Cowboys Super Bowl during that span.
This marked -The first and only playoff meeting between the Raiders and Chargers to date -The last Raiders road playoff win to date -The first and last time the Chargers hosted a conference championship game -The last game for Joe Gibbs as offensive coordinator before coaching Washington
Except theres nothing classic about the cars in the end zone... I believe those are six cylinder "transverse engine" economy cars. And if they hadn't been so ugly, they might've caught on and lasted longer.
The problem this game for the Chargers was they panicked. They got dpwn and if there's one thing that can get you back in a game where you're down by 2 touchdowns is running the ball. Down 21-7 if they run the ball inside the 20, the Raiders don't fall back into a zone tjat invites Fouts to throw into extreme tight windows. The formula for coming back is gaining momentum by running the ball. Their defense was tired by the middle of the 2nd quarter and tje Chargers just refused to be smart and run the ball. Joe Gibbs was the OC for San Diego and he took lessons from this loss, but unfortunately against these same Raiders in Super Bowl XVIII down 14-3 with seconds left in the half, had Joe Theisman run a quick flair out to Joe Washington. A play thst worked in a earlier game against the Raiders, but Jack Squirek recognized the play, jumped the route, intercepted it, ran it back for a short TD and just like that, the Redskins were in a 18 pt hole. He panicked, and it cost them BIG TIME! We see coaches still doing the same things year after year. When you sense a game getting away from you, you get basic! Line up, challenge your offensive and defensive line to dominate and take it to the other team. One coach I never see panic is Bill....( yeah...that guy) Belichick. He gets basic. Goes to his normal plays that settles his offense down and methodically gets back on the game. A nice running drive, gives the offense confidence, but most importantly, gives the defense a chance to rest and regroup. If I was a coach, I would practice that situation 40 - 50% of the time. These are lessons the Raiders learned from all those Championship games they've played in up to that point, and really, there was no way, under any circumstances the Chargers should have been favored in this game for that fact alone.. Nothing beats experience, and Division rivalry games in playoff situations, the Raiders had the advantage. Even in 1977 when the Raiders played the Broncos, the Broncos were only a 3pt favorite.
It is criminal that Branch and Flores aren't in the HOF. And Lester Hayes? Single handedly shut down Air Coryell and a historically great San Diego offense. Three receivers went to the Pro Bowl from this unit. Not only did he have 13 Ints during the season but 5 more during the playoffs. Possibly the greatest season by a defensive player in NFL history. While we're on the subject of HOF snubs, Henry Lawrence deserves some respect. Solid for 13 years on the right, 3 pro bowls and three SB's. Any other team and these guys are automatic inductees. NFL always hated the Raiders.
Lester Hayes was passed over by the senior committee again this year, and for whatever reason (Raider, Stickum, something else) seems to not have the type of support required by this old boys network. If Art Monk is in the Hall of Fame, anyone in doubt of Hayes’ credentials should rewatch the 83 Super Bowl, and see he and Mike Haynes shut down the Redskins passing game. Summerall and Madden could not recall any better coverage in a game than they saw in that one.
Don coryell and Tom Flores definitely should be in the Hall of Fame but Jim plunkett he won two super bowls but you got to I liked him with the raiders but he was pretty terrible most of his career until he got to the raiders and even then he was up and down he just played good in the big games which is important but he wasn't a Hall of Fame quarterback I'm sorry he just wasn't
What an impressive season for the Oakland Raiders in 1980. Former Houston Oilers quarterback Danny Pastorini was the Raiders starting Quarterback then broke his leg. Jim Plunkett who was a bust in his career. Led the Raiders to the Super Bowl and won. That was the team MVP. RAIDER NATION!!
All this firepower and the only SD Chargers team to go to the SB was lead by Stan Humphries??? Would love to have seen Fouts, Muncie, Brooks, Joiner, Chandler, Jefferson, and of course Winslow.
Alongside my Graduation photo in our 1979 school yearbook is the caption “If he doesn't make it as a professional football player (wide receiver for the Oakland Raiders), then he'll enter the Armed Forces". I had not even ever played competitive football; my words were nothing more that the dreams all youth have. I think I'd become a die hard Raider fan around the time of a “Sea of Hands” My dad was a huge Dolphin fan, so I think I had to cheer for the opposition and like a lot of kids; that Silver and Black and Pirate look simply drew you in. I did indeed enter the Armed Forces for a lengthy career and although I don't actively follow the NFL like a I used too, I remain a loyal Raider fan to this days. Thank You for these amazing time portals to the past.
I loved listening to Dick Enberg. His interception call @ 15:54 by Lester Hayes was perfect. It wasn't over hyped and he said exactly what everyone was thinking at the time.
Sad to think in 2020 that both these teams are no longer in Oakland and San Diego. Al Davis never would of taken the Raiders to Las Vegas, and Dean Spanos is just a jerk of an owner in San Diego. Charlie Joiner is simply amazing. At age 29 he was already in the NFL 7 years before going to SD in 1976. For the next 10 years he built a HOF career . I laughed when Enberg said he contemplated retiring after the 1980 season, and his teammates wanted him to stay. Had he retired in 1980 it's likely he doesn't make the HOF. He ended up playing another 6 years putting up some nice numbers before retiring in 1986 at age 39. When you think of all the inducted HOFers in this game, and the ones still waiting who deserve the call it's simply amazing.
Davis would have jumped at the chance to move the Raiders to Las Vegas (just like he did in 1982 when he moved them to Los Angeles). Mark Davis (who took over ownership after Al Davis passed) didn't even listen to the city of Oakland's attempt at financing a new stadium and moved the team to Las Vegas because of the "sweetheart" deal that they got and a new stadium that essentially didn't cost him anything
Freaking Hilarious to me @ 1:11..”Fouts threw for 300 yards for 3 straight games & still lost!”..yet Plunkett ain’t In the HOF!! And the Chargers had a strength & conditioning coach “disguise” their play calls! Meanwhile Mr. Davis was in the suite phoning in his play calls to Mr. Flores!! Mr. Flores respectfully reneged on many of them and won an NFL Championship!!Jim Plunkett & Tom Flores for NFL HOF!!!
Watching this game, I am shocked at the clock mismanagement by San Diego at the end of the game. S/D should have burned its time outs; instead they let Oakland burn the clock all the way from 2:24 to the 2 minute warning without running a play. Shake mah head. And I am a Raiders fan!
People always mention the 1981 Chargers as the best to not make the Super Bowl, but to me the 1980 squad was a better overall team. 81 was a better offense, worse defense
The best Chargers team wasn't EITHER the '80 or '81 team. It was the 1979 Chargers. YEAR: RECORD (PF/PA) 1979: 12-4 (411/246) 1980: 11-5 (418/327) 1981: 10-6 (478/390) In '79, the Chargers had the #2 scoring defense in the NFL and also absolutely SMOKED the eventual-champion Steelers, 35-7 during the regular season. If they played that game vs the Oilers (without Earl Campbell and Dan Pastorini) 100 more times, they'd win at least 99 of them.
@@dantheman5745 Yes, but Fouts was awful in that Oiler playoff game. Only time I remember seeing a guy get 4 picks in one game (Vernon Perry). I cheered the Steelers back then, and was nervous they would have to play the AFC championship in San Diego. Thankfully the Oilers did the Steelers dirty work for them and the Steelers got the home game vs the Houston.
My favorite thing about the old Raiders. They'd find ways to win, not like today's Raiders. Since losing to the Bucs in the '02 Super Bowl, they have 1 winning season!

I was neighbor and close friend to Ted Hendricks' kid when this was going on. Used to see Plunkett and Bahr hanging out at his house. I was about 10 years old and had zero interest in football at the time. Never went to a game or got one autograph, except for a football that my cousin asked me to get signed for him. Got it back with half the team's signatures on it. Needless to say, my cousin was pretty happy.
Dick Enberg and Merlin Olsen were an iconic video play by play and analytics duo! Plunkett and Ted Hendricks pulled off a Wild Card Ride back in '80 (Jan 81). Imagine adding Marcus Allen and Mike Haynes, then they win big in Jan 84.
In my opinion, the golden age of NFL football was from 1975-1990, approximately. I know, I know... older guys in the 1980s said the same thing about the game in the late 50s and sixties... I think they played the game better back then, and I also liked the rules better. I realise they had to do something because of the long-term health issues that they discovered (CTE). I think that the players, the rivalries, and the story arcs, with they way they played the game and the rules made for the golden age of NFL football. It will never get any better than that. I wonder what other people think. Like to hear some other peoples thoughts on it.

🍺🍺The exact reason why I’m watching this game! Reliving my childhood memories! Is there truly a rivalry between Las Vegas and LA?!? When this game was played Raider fans were concentrated in the East Bay Area, ever since the move to LA and the Internet Raider Nation grew beyond our geographical region which is a beautiful thing! Its also which is why this scene of 95% Chargers fans proves how Spanos eventually alienated his fans and many turned to the Raiders as well as the LA market. Also on a side note very few times will we see teams in the same division competing for a Conference Championship these days
Neither one of the cities by 2020. Either way it should be San Diego and Oakland (different) home games respectively. @@r8ersfan Never had anything against the Raider fans untill I went to a preseason game at Candlestick in '95, and saw several Raider fans waiting in packs in the parking lot to pick fights with 49er fans after the game. And of course we know how bad it had gotten by the early part of the millennium with the muggings and stabbings causing the league to forbid the two clubs to play each other in the preseason. But I felt exactly the opposite in 1987 when purely by chance I had learned from a Big time Raider fan that the whole time during the team's exile in Los Angeles that their fans were chartering tour buses down to the home games at the Los Angeles Coliseum. The buses left on Fridays, parked in the lot and or side streets, and then boarded the buses after the game to return to the East Bay. Now that's dedicated loyalty!
I guarantee you:
A): Miami would have had their perfect season in 1972.
B): The Patriots could have overcome Miami and Pittsburgh during the 1970’s and won a couple of Super Bowls.
Unfortunately, the Patriots O-Line during The Plunkett ERA was shaky at best.

Lester Hayes one of the greatest defensive years ever in 1980 !
@@michaelbarlow6610 lol, not a good CB. Hayes and Haynes were the reason that the Raiders could shut down the Redskins Offensive in Super Bowl XVIII.
Its criminal that neither Flores, Plunkett or Coryell for that matter are not in HOF
Why not:
Ed White
Doug Wilkerson
Russ Washington

And let's not forget his years in St. Louis. Great offense, but poor defense, lots of penalties and turnovers.

Why is Cliff Branch not in the HOF? And Plunkett and Flores?
@coffeeinthemorning He has two rings, Namath has one, Plunkett has better stats over the same amount of games. So why is Namath in the HOF, because of one game? Plunkett has better stats than Bart Starr, Bob Griese and Roger Staubach, and they all have 2 rings, like Plunkett.

As the trash says...come take my rights over my cold and armed hands tough guy.
plenty of thugs, however, the style of play and the rules made scoring points much more difficult. When a team scored 30, they usually EARNED it. Now w/ the rules changes and pass interference the norm instead of the exception, 30-30 is common at halftime. RIP NFL.

Your argument that if they were people of color would have helped them in the HoF is invalid.

Classic! Love the cars in the end zone! Will never see this again.
This is a excellent breakdown of sports/football psychology.
Thankfully in the years since you posted this, Branch and Flores are now in the HOF. Not too sure about Lester Hayes yet.
Plunkett, Branch and Flores go the Super Bowl while Chargers go to the Hall of Fame. Sigh.
Its criminal that neither Flores, Plunkett or Coryell for that matter are not in HOF
Jim Plunkett & air Coryell call the 🚔 police not in NFL football Halloween fame
Don coryell and Tom Flores definitely should be in the Hall of Fame but Jim plunkett he won two super bowls but you got to I liked him with the raiders but he was pretty terrible most of his career until he got to the raiders and even then he was up and down he just played good in the big games which is important but he wasn't a Hall of Fame quarterback I'm sorry he just wasn't
Anyone reading this in 2024 - Both Flores and Coryell are both now in the HOF. Plunkett is still waiting.
By the way I loved Charlie Jones calling AFL games!! He was great!!
Al DeRogatis, too. As a former player, he was one of the best "color commentators."
All this firepower and the only SD Chargers team to go to the SB was lead by Stan Humphries??? Would love to have seen Fouts, Muncie, Brooks, Joiner, Chandler, Jefferson, and of course Winslow.
Charlie Joiner's initial touchdown I still think is the best catch I ever saw.Im 52 and remember watching this at age 11
I hope you are still a Raiders Fan, sir… 🙏🙏🙏🥺
This game looked great. Today you get the Raiders in shiny pants and the Chargers in powder blue. The NFL has lost it's way big time.
How is it the Raiders were in their home jerseys?
Ray Guy should have been elected to the HOF long before 2014.
Better late than never!
When they were in LA we Used to go to games early..... Just to watch him warm up. Almost crested the top of the Coliseum. Amazing!
" Lester, Plunket. "Snake " too ya know most Raiders have to wait. Maybe Flores gets in this year. to open the gates.
Guys made great catches without the Gloves receivers wear today.
I loved listening to Dick Enberg. His interception call @ 15:54 by Lester Hayes was perfect. It wasn't over hyped and he said exactly what everyone was thinking at the time.
Kurt Warner is in and Plunkett is not 🤔
Neither of these teams now play in these cities.
Al Davis took them to LA where they never should have been. He definitely would have taken them to Las Vegas or maybe to Macau if the price was right.
Charlie Joiner also served in combat in Vietnam.
It was a treasure to see this again. Thank you for preserving and providing this man.
People always mention the 1981 Chargers as the best to not make the Super Bowl, but to me the 1980 squad was a better overall team. 81 was a better offense, worse defense
The best Chargers team wasn't EITHER the '80 or '81 team. It was the 1979 Chargers.
YEAR: RECORD (PF/PA)
1979: 12-4 (411/246)
1980: 11-5 (418/327)
1981: 10-6 (478/390)
In '79, the Chargers had the #2 scoring defense in the NFL and also absolutely SMOKED the eventual-champion Steelers, 35-7 during the regular season. If they played that game vs the Oilers (without Earl Campbell and Dan Pastorini) 100 more times, they'd win at least 99 of them.
SPOT ON SIR.
I said the EXACT same thing in a different thread (missing ring charger video).
Dan the Man Speak on it!!!
@@dantheman5745 Chargers never had a good defense and that's why they never made it to the Superbowl in the late 70s early 80s
My favorite thing about the old Raiders. They'd find ways to win, not like today's Raiders. Since losing to the Bucs in the '02 Super Bowl, they have 1 winning season!
The player,s today play for money, there,s no pride or respect for the game anymore, the down fall of the nfl, started in the early 90s, michael erving, deon sander,s
What a pitiful tribute the current thugs are to the raider greats of old!
😒 hmmmm they find any way they can to lose now. Its like they don't even try to win or care
2 now
Watching this game and hoping for something similar on Sunday
boy was Kellen Winslow a great player...i remember vividly that O.T game with the Dolphins where the guy did EVERYTHING!!!! had to be helped off the field!!!!!! this was right before the 'Fins got Dan Marino and had David Woodly and Don Strock alternate as QB'S!!!! Miss the great 1980's unfortunately other than the BENGALS!!! believe it or not playing the 49ers tough in 2 super bowls the SB'S were lousy. mostly blowouts. greatest Super Bowls of the 70's were the Fabulous Cowboys against the lucky Steelers with a QB who was dumb as a doorknob. forget not being able to spell "cat" but he calls the Dolphins TE Gisecki...Gi sucky...Howie Long LOST IT HA HA!!! The disgusting "Immaculate B.S. CALL and the tripping called on Bennie Barnes (i think it was Barnes) in SB XXIII....even the admired Roger Staubach in an interview ion the locker room after the game said "were those refs Communist??" of course you have to remember the times and the "Cold War" was really always a thought in the back of everybodys mind. The NFL apologized to the Cowboys 2 weeks later and instituted the "incidental contact" rule...true story.
ray guy is the true goat
All you old timers out there like me, don’t you just wish these two teams were just like the way they were and that it’s not 2021...
Dang! It looks like the Chargers actually had fans 40 years ago 😯
Crazy and I'm still a BOLTS FAN.
i was 11 years old this day and so upset my Cowboys were destroyed by the Eagles...had to see them lose the NFC champ. game the year before against that lucky pass by Montana...remember like it was yesterday. then the next year after this Dallas loses the NFC champ. AGAIN against the 'Skins...ohhh my!!!! Dick Enberg was awesome!!! miss those days!!! 3 nfc champ. losses in a row by Danny White....WAS NO ROGER STAUBACH!!!! but was a very good QB.
3 nfc championship losses are better then 3 superbowl losses
The 49er game was the next season.. the '81 season SB teams were SF vs CIN
That final drive by Oakland was epic! The Chargers defense was completely out of gas! That Raiders offensive line dominated them! What a game!
Chargers should move from LA. They could get better fan support in another city.
ONCE A RAIDER ALWAYS A RAIDER, GREAT MEMORIES, A RAIDER FAN FROM LAREDO TEXAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THIS ANNOYING COWBOYS FANS 🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈
Is that Jim Plunkett??QB for the Raiders
Genynne Beiter ......what ever makes you think that?
Yes his mother was legally blind could not see him play but she heard it all though
Raider 83 team was by far their best team talent wise!
Maybe, but that 76 team had an insane offense.
@@jeremiahrose4681 No they didn’t . What are you talking about ? They had no speed and except for Branch . They were slow as shit . The 83 team had Marcus Allen and better tight end and of course much better d lineman and the greatest corners of all time
No More San Diego or Oakland in football.
sad
And besides ,both Mark Davis' and Dean Spanos' fathers are spinning in their graves right now. And so does lates Tom Flores (head coach at the time), and Don Coryell. Either way good video memories 🏈🇺🇸📺🌈😢
@@r8ersfan I hate the fact that they are moving to Vegas. 🤬
@@r8ersfan
Never had anything against the Raider fans untill I went to a preseason game at Candlestick in '95, and saw several Raider fans waiting in packs in the parking lot to pick fights with 49er fans after the game.
I can't tell you how impressed I was.
If Eli Manning gets to HOF before Jim Plunkett . Im done!!!
Mannings are the royal family of the league
Neither should be in the HOF.
@@killalltogepis9916 Eli's got 3 things in his favor.....2 rings, the "Brady killer" label and family royalty.
@@ontarionagasaki1441 well I will admit that Eli is more deserving than Plunkett.
@@killalltogepis9916 Plunketts 2 rings should be enough as well
