NFC Championship games like this really opened my eyes as to why the AFC lost every Super Bowl from 84-96. NFC teams like these 49ers and Cowboys were so complete on offense and defense. They had playmakers at almost every position. The AFC's best teams during this same era (Bills, Broncos, Dolphins, Bengals, Steelers) always had glaring weak spots that were easily exploited by the stronger NFC. They either had great defenses, but bad offenses (Steelers) or great offenses but bad defenses (Dolphins, Broncos, Bills)

    • @RichV20

Broncos defenses were top during this period, but their offense was mediocre. Oilers could score at will and shut teams down. But they'd always get exposed and exploited in the playoffs.

Emmitt is the product of a great runner behind all time great blocking.
There have been great lines without great runners, and great runners who never had great lines. That was both together.
Emmitt made defenders miss with both his elusiveness and would power through tackles. He also found ways to maintain balance and recover from tackles which would have seen other lesser backs fall to the ground.
No way he has his records without that offensive line.
Where would Sanders be had he played for Dallas? Where would Emmitt be had he played for Detroit? I doubt that their career numbers would be the same, and Barry might have kept playing for 3+ more years had he not been a Lion.

We can woulda/coulda/shoulda this to death but the bottom line is he did the job and he has the records and nothing can be done or said to change that reality. He was a smart runner. Tough as nails, elusive, could block, and could catch out of the backfield. And he was still a 1000 yd back well into his 30's long after that Oline had passed it's glory days. He was still a 1000 yd guy in his late 30's on a whole different team. Barry's greatness does absolutely nothing to negate Emmitt's. The Cowboys had a great season in the NFL's toughest division, but the 49ers had looked unstoppable all year long, and they'd spent the last decade dominating the league. Compare these highlights to the divisional re-match 30 years later (January 2023). Back in '93, football was still football, where real tackling was allowed, players cared more about their team than themselves, and flawless execution of plays despite nasty field conditions. Today it's unusual to see a player get their uniform dirty...that is on the rare occasion when they play on real grass.

As a Cowboys fan for many years up until that point, it was such an amazing moment. Being dominate in the 70s. Then slowly going down in the 80s. Then going back up like they did when Jimmy Johnson came on board. It was such a culmination of so many things. I don't think any team could have beat the 49ers that day but the Cowboys. The 49ers were really really good.
