Yeah, except Davis didn't really want to trade Gruden. Gruden's agent at the time stoked the flames during contract negotiations to get himself and Gruden out onto the free market where he knew they would probably get the highest paying contract in football. In a last minute attempt Al was looking for a trade partner to get something out of the ordeal and called Gruden asking him if he wanted to leave. Gruden and Al weren't on the greatest of terms at the time and Gruden told Al he didn't care. Gruden has since admitted that he didn't handle things as well as he could of with Al and never should have let his agent do the things he did to piss Al off.
It's really interesting listening to Jerry Rice and Jerry Porter talking about how they should run the ball at 20:35. Tim Brown claims that HC Bill Callahan actually sabotaged the Raiders game plan the Friday before. They were originally planning on a "ground and pound" run first, pass second type offense. Callahan decided at the last minute that they were going to "air it out." It makes you wonder.
Lol he switched it to Grudens old play book, Gruden was his mentor and best friend, Callahan was mad at Al Davis for shipping Gruden to Tampa Bay... that’s how the NFL works
Alex Charles the assertion by Tim Brown has been backed up by Jerry Rice himself! Rice claims Barrett Robbins bailed after this and that’s why he went to Tijuana
@@Treesandhustle You gotta stop this nonsense. So you're saying that Callahan was so upset... at being given the head coaching position... of the AFC Champions... (think about that one real hard!).... that he purposely threw away a SUPERBOWL CHAMPIONSHIP????... brruuuhhhhhhhh.....
The Buccaneers defense was better at stopping ground attacks than they were even at the pass, so the Raiders would have been smashed even worse. It would have been a much lower score game, but the Raiders still would have been beat at the end of the day. The Bucs defense was built on speed, probably the fastest defense there ever was yet. Their pursuit on the ball was very, very fast. If you never seen the Bucs live, you can’t imagine it. I have seen many teams play live over the last fifty years and I have never seen anything like the Buccaneers defense lateral movement and the sea of red shirts that move with the ball. It is impossible to see it on television because can’t see the entire line and the secondary at one time. That is why even Michael Vick was held to less than 10 yards against this defense. No other team ever held Vick to so few yards. They would have Derrick Brooks shadow Vick all game and even with Vick’s quickness, Brooks could match it all day long, stuffing him anytime he tried to leave the backfield. It’s not like the Raiders had a Barry Sanders in their running attack. I don’t see them being any more successful trying to run all day. All I see is a lot of three and outs. Besides, once they fell so far behind, they really had no choice but to pass.
Who's here after the Buccaneers win 31-9 against the Chiefs? As a Chiefs fan all I can say is that the defense was stellar like in this game. Congrats Bucs
I say the same and as a Raider fan I knew in 02 that their offense was virtually hopeless against that all-time defense that Tampa brought to the Super bowl.
@@nicehat2619 : In 02, the Bucs scored 9 touchdowns and shut down almost every single offensive team that year as well as performing at an all-time great I the postseason.
I normally root against TB12 in Super Bowls, but I want the Bucs to win this year. Being the 1st team ever to play the big game in their own home stadium, and the Bucs struggling all those years after SB 37... they really deserve to win their 2nd Lombardi this year. I wouldn't mind Tampa Bay joining the titletown club with LA this year. Should be a fun Super Bowl game ahead. Good luck TB!
Don't worry you never saw a defense like the 2000 Ravens again. This buc defense wasn't on that level. Raiders put up 21 points bro. Only 3 versus ravenslol
@@JonathanEvans1977 our defense scored more points than their offense... we had the most dominant/turnover defense to ever exist in the NFL. You heard of the Baltimore 2? No you havent. It's the Tampa 2.
Man, this Bucs defense was something else. They made Rich Gannon (aka Sammy from Blue Mountain State) look like a middle-school quarterback, and that's not easy to do at all.
Not really… Their defense was legendary. The offense was just good enough to not be a detriment to the defense. Dungy tried for years to field an offense that was just good enough and failed and that’s why they fired him.
@@snausages43Honestly their real problem was the QB position. Brad did we he had to do and im glad he did but imagine a legendary QB with this team. They had an all time running back duo in Alstott and Dunn + some above average receivers
Are you referring to the “Tuck Rule”? Gruden should have taken the Raider to the Super Bowl then. That “Tuck Rule” was bullshit, it was a fumble and The Raiders ball. The officials gave Brady a gift and the game.
Look at the team Oakland had, that team was old with guys past their prime. That team 5-10 years earlier is an all time great team. Many retired and or just lost a step.
Wanted to ask you a question if you wouldn't mind. When Oakland Drafted Jamarcus Russell with the 1st pick in the 2007 draft how bad was he? Was he a bust? Lotta people most of them raider fans were telling me yesterday that this guy named jamarcus russell was arguably the biggest draft bust in nfl draft history. Is any of that fact?
Neutered is a nice way of putting it this time around. To me their performance on Sunday ran laps around this one. Historic defense in 2003 nonetheless.
@@andreyhatley The 2003 Bucs had an all-time great defense. The 2020 Bucs didn’t but I’d have to agree with you. If the 2020 Bucs didn’t have the greatest defensive performance in Super Bowl history then it’s definitely up there with the likes of the 14 Seahawks, the 03 Bucs, the 01 Ravens, Patriots in both games vs the Rams. Or even the 70s Steel Curtain and the 80s 9ers who just destroyed the opposition on defense.
That day was a miracle I remember it like yesterday and no one gave the Bucs a chance that season and they pulled off the upset! I wore my Reebok Brad Johnson NFC Champions jersey with the Super Bowl 37 logos on the sleeves that day and until this day I still own it and wear it proudly !
hard to believe the Raiders went 14 straight losing seasons, no playoff appearances after this Super Bowl blowout, they went from riches to rags instantly, winners to losers instantly, yes I know they lost the Super Bowl but still you have to be pretty damn good to even make the Super Bowl
Yeah, having Bill Callahan, Art Shell and Lane Kiffin as back to back to back coaches will do that to you. Bill Callahan ruined that culture that Gruden and Davis built and Davis never could find another coach to buy into it.
@@bmonty1915 even though the Raiders would end that generation long playoff drought in the 2016 season, they would return to their losing ways the following year, overall they have had only one winning season in almost 20 years now, I remember I was making jokes and statements, describing how was the world was different the last time the Raiders had a winning season
Fun fact about this Super Bowl, this was the last Super Bowl so far to feature both teams starting Free Agent QB's instead of drafting. Every Super Bowl since this one has featured at least 1 starting QB drafted by their respective team. Brad Johnson was drafted by Minnesota, Rich Gannon ALSO by Minnesota.
I remember this game well, I was in Vegas with friends. They all took the Raiders and laid the points, after the Robbins debacle and with that Bucs defense I bet the Bucs money line. The only thing I didn't remember until I watched this was how close it was for most of the first half. I remembered thinking from the beginning that I was a genius for taking the Bucs.

This will be my first time watching this game in full. Back when it aired, I was so disheartened by the Raiders' poor performance that I turned it off a bit into the third quarter. Now that the Raiders are doing well again, I feel like I can finally watch the whole game.
Rich Gannon? Was he the raiders starting qb in the tuck rule game? Forgive me for not knowing but i haven't been watching nfl for long. Last season was really the first full season of football that i watched. and BTW the first time i watched nfl programming i kept hearing about this tuck rule thing. whatever a tuck rule is.
I was there as a 15 year old kid from the east coast when Woodson got that first pick I thought this was going to be a great game as a raiders fan. Oh the worst part...my little brother was a Buccaneers fan 🤣 so he got bragging rights the whole way home to the east coast...RIP JOHN MADDEN a great Raider, a great commentator and a great legacy to be remembered forever!!!
The 2002 Bucs were one of the all-time great defenses, particularly against the pass. Sure, you could argue Dungy's players won it all with Gruden. By all accounts Sapp and the other defensive guys loved Gruden. They were the only defense in the NFL that could match the Rams speed on offense and it showed here. The pass rush may have gotten tired toward the end but that's when they could effectively blitz with Ronde Barber to contain the Raiders comeback attempt. . Now as for the Raiders. Rich Gannon was probably the best quarterback in the league for three or four seasons up through 2002 (he was league MVP that year). Rich Gannon threw half of his seasons worth of interceptions in this game. Ouch. Jerry Rice at age 40 caught 100 passes and Charlie Garner damn near had a 1000-1000 season (1000 yards rushing, 1000 yards receiving). The Raiders one bugaboo on defense was they had problems stopping the run. Both teams in this game started out with pass wacky, no huddle offenses. The Bucs were the first to settle down and start running and the Raiders couldn't keep up. That was the difference in this game. The Bucs defense did what they had done all season to keep the Raiders offense at bay (no pun intended). We can only speculate on the impact of Barrett Robbins's disappearance and Callahan switching up the gameplan.
Dumbest line I always heard as a Tampa fan, Gruden won with Dungy's players. Ok. Callahan took Gruden's Raiders to the Super Bowl. That line get them to stop, every time. playmakers that got them to the SB. Half that O-Line and WRs for that matter.
Are You High? 1.000 Winning Percentage or .333 Winning Percentage Only a Idiot would say .333. Why get to a Super Bowl if all you are going to do is CHOKE???
man as a raider fan it dose hurt of wasn't meant for Al Davis decision we may won this super bowl but glad we are getting together this season and took us 15 years wow and hope this is our year
Really hope this season helps The Raiders. As a 49ers fan, I actually want the Raiders to stay in Oakland. Because I love that Battle of The Bay stuff. Best of luck this season.
This is why i think they should wait to name the MVP until the clock hits 0:00. Everyone was still debating it when it was already announced. Players were still making plays to the last 2 seconds.
@@flarican64 I read that Simeon Rice was the one they were going to award the MVP to until the online votes came in and Dexter Jackson had the overwhelming amount of votes, so they changed it. I would have liked to have seen Derrick Brooks get the award, only because he has been one of the best LB the Bucs ever had and his INT for a TD came at the most critical time and iced the game for the Bucs. Up until that pick 6, it was still anyone’s game. My second pick would have been Keenan McCardall for the two catches for 2 TDs and because he was always underrated since Keyshawn always got all the media coverage. And I think Keenan was a better receiver, especially in clutch situations. He did the same in Jacksonville, but Jimmy Smith always got all the press.
This game happened when I was 9 and I’m a raider fan, when they lost and they way they did, I cried like a baby so much my mom had to put me in the shower to calm me down, might’ve been the worst day of my life so far, since then, the raiders have not been very good to say the least so the next time if they ever win a Super Bowl in my lifetime, I’m crying like a baby idc how old I am lol
Brad Johnson was a great qb. When he played for the redskins I was going to every home game and he was the best that franchise has had at that position in many many years
I'm from England. It's 2020 now. This was the first ever Superbowl I ever watched. Keenan McCardell, Dwight Smith and Warren Sapp. Those 3 names have been stuck in my head ever since
So we should prepare for Bill Belichick to draft a 6th round QB, make him the starter, and win back to back Super Bowls. Dang. Just when we thought we had ‘em
Everyone always forgets to mention the 2002 bucs with the all time great defenses.

Gruden finished what Dungy started. NFL needs Gruden back. He is awesome.
The buccs defense from 97-02 were consistently dominant! One of the greatest stretches of defense ever
Seriously. They were such fun to watch. For those 5 years I just remember you could not run on them. Period.
Blame Al Davis for trading his coach. Not Gruden's fault the Raiders didn't change their playbook when Gruden left.
@Sysiphus Syziggy In an act of panic?
That' s really weird.
The only thing I seen Tim Brown Poo-poo do in this game is drop an easy completion

I say the same and as a Raider fan I knew in 02 that their offense was virtually hopeless against that all-time defense that Tampa brought to the Super bowl.

I wouldn't mind Tampa Bay joining the titletown club with LA this year. Should be a fun Super Bowl game ahead. Good luck TB!

This Bucs team was one of the most well balance teams of all-time.

Their defense was legendary.

So sad Robbins went mad because they switched the goddamn gameplan
Raiders had both woodsons too

This is why i think they should wait to name the MVP until the clock hits 0:00. Everyone was still debating it when it was already announced. Players were still making plays to the last 2 seconds.
Those plays were "cosmetic", as Al Michaels put it, though.
