This Super Bowl should have been the matchup we didn't get in the '70s "Raiders-Cowboys" If only the defending champion Raiders had beaten Denver in AFC title game to set up a showdown with this great Cowboys team. Stabler vs Staubach, What a Super Bowl that would have been!

JayDogTitan 1464 Yes Lytle fumbled. However, the Raiders missed a fg early in the game (the Broncos missed two fgs that would've made the score 26-17),the Raiders turned the ball over twice in the 4th qtr and Haven Moses parted the silver and black sea with 5 catches for 160 plus yards and 2 tds. The Broncos made the key plays and the Raiders just couldn't overcome their own mistakes.

I never got to watch Super Bowl 12 on TV because I was only 4 years old back then. Thanks for posting this game. Now I've watched all 8 of the Broncos Super Bowls. They lost this one of course and 4 others, but at least I am alive to witness 3 of their Super Bowls which they won (Super Bowl 32, 33 and 50). I'm so proud of the 1977 Broncos because they were the first to reached the Super Bowl even though they lost to Dallas. Of course this was the slimmest margin of defeat that they suffered of their 5 losses. But again thank God they won 3 other Super Bowls which makes those other non playoff appearances, losing seasons and early exit out of the playoffs OK. Go Broncos!!

I think the 1970 and 1971 teams were better. Had Staubach been put in against the Colts, they would have won that game. Morton played in that SB just as he did in this one. Whenever the Colts pressured him, he folded like a cheap tent. I believe Roger would have figured out a way to beat their pass rush.
That 1970 defense gave up 0, 10, and 16 points in the playoffs and SB (Morton coughed up TOs that led to 9 points, and a fluke 75 yd TD pass to John Mackey was the Colts only TD). The defense forced SEVEN turnovers, but Duane Thomas fumbled on the goal line going in for the go ahead TD, and Morton threw 3 INTs. We should have won 24-10.
The 1971 team was incredible. Staubach, Ditka, Alworth, Rayfield Wright and Bob Hayes were HOF players on offense, and the defense had HOFers Herb Adderly, Mel Renfro, Bob Lilly, Cliff Harris, and Chuck Howley. That's TEN HOFers. Randy White was great, Bob Lilly was better, and he was the best DT ever to wear an NFL uniform.
In 1971, their 2 playoffs and SB, the defense gave up 12. 3. and 3 points. Think about that - in 4 playoff games and 2 SBs, they gave up a grand total of 44 points. That's 7.3 points per game, against the best teams in the NFL. WOW.
The Dolphins team they beat 24-3 would go undefeated the next season, and win back to back SBs. Csonka had not fumbled all year, until the Cowboys hit him and he coughed it up. Had Duane Thomas not fumbled AGAIN on the goal line late in the game, the score would have been 31-3.
Believe this - the backfield of Thomas, Walt Garrison, Calvin Hill and Dan Reeves was every bit as talented as the 1977 team - maybe better. Duane would surely have made the HOF had he committed himself to playing longer. He just did not want to play for the meager salaries being shelled out back then. He was as good as Dorsett, but he was a head case. Calvin Hill had two 1,000 yard seasons, but 2 knee injuries forced him to become a 3rd down back in Dallas and then Cleveland. His son, Grant, had the same issue - several great seasons, but injuries shortened his career. Calvin was ROY in 1969 when he gained 944 yards and 8 TDs. He gained 6,083 in his career, and caught 271 passes, scoring 65 TDs. Garrison gained 3,886 yards, plus caught 182 passes and scored 39 TDs in his career. Dan Reeves had 3,683 rushing and receiving yards and scored 42 TDs (and should be in the HOF for his coaching career. He won 190 games and guided 4 different teams to the SB.).
That team had lost back to back NFL title games to the Lombardi Packers by 7 and 4 points. Had Meredith not retired in 1968 after 3 straight pro bowl seasons (AT AGE 30!), we would not have suffered through the Morton years, and Dandy Don could have won the 1970 SB. (BTW, that Colts team had lost to the Jets 2 years before this. They were a great defensive team, but Unitas was old. Lee Roy Jordan knocked him out of the 1970 SB.)
      That's my .02
      Peace

@@smoothALOE The 1970 SB against the Colts, and the 1971 SB against the Dolphins are both available on you tube. I encourage you to look them up and watch them.
I was 11 and 12 when they were played, and those seasons created my LOVE for the Cowboys, even though I lived in Houston. I lived in Ohio until I was 9, and the Browns were my team until I saw the Cowboys every Sunday.
Thank you for your kind words.
As an aside, I hope I didn't overstate the case. The 1977 team was truly great, historically. I think the X-factor, for me, was the '70 and '71 teams had been banging their heads on the wall for 5 straight postseason losses They were called "next years champions" and told they "couldn't win the big one." When they finally beat the Dolphins in the SB, they beat the HELL out of them. Bob Lilly was the first "Manster" in Dallas' history. He made plays that made your jaw drop. He played next to Jethro Pugh, who made several pro bowls, as did Lee Roy Jordan, at MLB, along with the other HOF players I mentioned before. This was the team that America first loved. In the era of protests and anti-American sentiment, we had a devout Christian as a coach, and a Vietnam vet at QB, who was also a devout Catholic. They represented all that was good in our country.
The '77 team inherited this legacy, and had the veterans who had been through the playoff battles. Be sure to watch the '75 SB, too. These guys were pups then, with 12 rookies replacing some of the stars that came before them. That was the year of the original "Hail Mary" pass. All those playoff games can be found as well, against the Rams and Vikings.
Also, if you haven't seen it, check the NFL network's documentary of the '71 team, with Staubach, Lilly, and Duane Thomas sharing their insights.
"A Football Life," about Roger, will bring tears to your eyes. Please watch that if you haven't. He is a truly amazing man.

Yes, for the all the Cowboys' skill, accomplishments and sterling reputation in the 70s, that was most assuredly NOT a valid touchdown they gave to Butch Johnson. What a sham! An absolutely drop, 100%. Did not maintain control. Too bad they would get a call THAT wrong on a stage as big as the Super Bowl. As far as I'm concerned, the Cowboys won this game 20-10. There have been plenty of really awful calls in the history of the NFL. This TD for sure, some of the old "in the grasp" sacks they called in the 80s, the Tuck Rule, and some of the "roughing the passer" calls from this past season.

The 1977 Dallas Cowboys are the most underrated GREAT team in NFL history. They were the last team to lead the league in total offense AND defense, Harvey Martin was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Tony Dorsett was the Rookie of the Year, and the Boys outscored their playoff opponents 87-23. In the first 12 years of the Super Bowl Era, the 1972 Dolphins and 1976 Raiders had better regular season records, but neither team was as dominate in the playoffs as the 1977 Cowboys. One could argue that from 1966-1983, the 1977 Cowboys were the 2nd best (e.g., just behind the 1978 Steelers) team of that time period.

This game should have been a much bigger blowout than it was. The Cowboys settled for way too many field goals and their kicker missed more than he made. Credit to the Denver's defense for keeping it as close as they did.

I love the Cowboys. The first NFL game I ever saw on tv was the fabled “Ice Bowl” between Dallas and Green Bay. I feel that Dallas was the better team when they played the Broncos in SB XII but I have never been able to convince myself that Butch Johnson caught that ball. If you look at his reaction you can clearly see that even Butch didn’t think he caught it. He gets up and appears to be about to have a fit because he knew he didn’t make the catch. Then he sees the official signal touchdown and his frustration instantly turns into celebration. It appears obvious to me.

The Broncos got dominated. My sisters new nothing about football but teased me all night that the Broncos lost. It was a rough night.

The first several minutes of the game seemed to follow the blueprint of Denver's success during the year; physical and opportunistic defense and ball control offense. Iv'e wondered if a recovery of the Hill fumble at the goal line early would have allowed the Broncos to play a different game and not have Morton exposed so much. The Doomday defense certainly did the job the rest of the way.

The interesting thing about this game is that early in the game Roger Staubach banged his hand and was not able to grip the football well. During a time he came out, Danny White moved the ball up and down the field at will. Roger’s TD pass to Butch Johnson was on a long throw but the other TD was thrown by Newhouse to Golden Richards, which may not have happened if Roger’s hand was 100 percent.

    • @KingOfTheNighttime
      @KingOfTheNighttime 7 лет назад +3

Except there was no real controversy - both announcers agreed it was a catch. And it differed from the Calvin Johnson rule in that the pass arrived in the endzome from outside of it - Butch Johnson carried it into the endzone and dropped it afterward. It's the same reason why other plays are called touchdowns the moment the possessed ball breaks the plane.

There is an interception that was ruled a dead ball no-play at 35:45 for Staubach stepping out of bounds. They then show an instant replay from above (which must have been a new technology because Brookshier was mystified by it the entire game), and it clearly shows green between Staubach's foot and the sideline, making it rather obvious he was in bounds when he threw it. Yet, Brookshier and then Summerall both confidently claim he was out of bounds after seeing the replay, making one wonder are they both visually impaired, or do the former NFL players simply not want to make the officiating crew look bad?
