    The Cowboys first S.B. title. I was 10 years old.
    Before this game, the Cowboys had a rep for being "next year's champions", who "couldn't win the big one".
    Bob Lilly's 29-yard sack of Bob Griese is still the longest sack in both Super Bowl & NFL history. And if there were ever going to be an NFL record (by a Cowboys player) that stood the test of time, it would be one made by "Mr. Cowboy".

    • @comfortat
      @comfortat Год назад +5

      Reeves took 3 Denver teams to the SB, and then he coached the Falcons to their first SB. He was offensive coordinator in the Cowboys 2nd Super Bowl win over... the BRONCOS. He was also OC when the 'Boys had 2 exciting come-from-behind playoff wins (in 1978 and 1980) over the FALCONS. (Against Atlanta, Danny White relieved an injured Staubach in the first one, and was the starting QB in the 2nd. He never had the ultimate success, but to follow a legend like Roger, Danny did okay. Tough act to follow.)
      Ditka, of course, was the head coach of one of the most dominant seasons any team ever had, the 18-1 Bears in 1985. Their only loss that season? To Shula's DOLPHINS on MNF. Buddy Ryan, his infamous defensive coordinator, was defensive line coach for the '69 Jets. They were the team that upset the Colts in the SB. Baltimore's head coach was... Don Shula.

      It's a shame Landry didn't let Staubach play in the SB the previous season. Morton looked lost against the Colts pass rush, and I believe Roger could have been the difference. Dallas' defense forced SEVEN turnovers, but 3 critical interceptions by Morton did them in. To be fair, Duane Thomas' fumble on the goal line hurt, too. Had he not lost that ball, we might have won the game, as well.
      Staubach's running and scrambling could have won the game for us. Craig was a good QB when he had a clean pocket, but in both SBs he played in, he was a turnover machine. This was Landry's only weakness, IMO - he couldn't see differences in his QBs. He thought that execution was the key to everything. He rarely accounted for the intangibles.
      Once he was forced to choose Staubach in 1971, I think the blinders came off.
      I love Landry, so don't think I'm being too harsh. But even great men have their flaws, and that was Tom's. He actually thought Gary Hogeboom could play championship level QB... LOL
      He's the greatest coach of all time, IMO.
      Peace

      Not to argue, but... Baltimore and Pittsburgh were NFL (as opposed to AFL) teams who were moved to the AFC, along with Cleveland, at the merger. Together, they won 5. Had Landry let Staubach play, I believe the Cowboys would have beaten the Colts the previous year. Craig Morton was a turnover machine when he was pressured. Staubach was way better, but Landry liked Morton, and thought his system would rule the day.
      The Cowboys had 5 HOFers on defense - Howley, Renfro, Adderley, Harris, and the greatest DT ever, Bob Lilly.
      Howley is still the only player on a losing team to win SB MVP. This game was the only time a team did not score a TD until the Patriots held the Rams without one.

    In back to back Super Bowls, Chuck Howley had 4 turnovers at freakin' outside linebacker. Amazing. He had 2 interceptions in Super Bowl 5 and remains the only player from the losing team to be named the Super Bowl MVP. In this game, he recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass by Griese. Despite his Super Bowl and regular season (e.g., 6 consecutive Pro Bowls, 5 time First Team All-Pro) accolades, Howley is not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. One could argue that Howley is currently the BEST player not enshrined in Canton.

    Manny Fernandez was one of my favorite players from my childhood. He had a really nice 4-5 year run. He was so underrated. This was the Dolphins 2nd playoff appearance and even though they lost, it was clear to see that they would have to be dealt with, and boy did they! If not for the"Sea of Hands" maybe they go to 4 in a row and win 3 in a row. Maybe they get "The Team of the Decade". They weren't the same after the defections to the WFL and their demise led to the Steelers stepping in the mid to late '70s and claim 4 Super Bowls. To a man, if you asked the Dolphins if they could do it again, and matched up with their best team and Oakland and Pittsburgh best, they would say they would beat them both. You know what???? I believe it! These were disciplined and very basically fundamentally sound Dolphin teams that wouldn't be intimidated by the Steelers and Raiders, and if they got down, had the weapons to come back! I focused my comments on the Dolphins because I believe the Cowboys reached their peak twice. This team, and of course their best team up to the Jimmy Johnson Cowboys era in 1977. However this Dolphins team would be perfect the next season and a notch better in '73 and got beat by Oakland in '74 and that opened the door for the Steelers. I honestly believe that if the Dolphins win that game against Oakland and not had 3 of there best players (Czonka, Kickk, and Warfield) they win a couple of more Championships and the 70's end up totally different!

The Steelers were minus 5 future hofers in that 72 conference championship game, Swann Stalworth,Lambert ,Webster ,Donnie Shell ,a pretty good cb in Jimmy Allen . Your quick to stipulate hypothetical notions in defense of the dolphins ,while selectively dismissing that fact . Pittsburgh morphed it's lineup twice during it's 70's dynasty, Webster and Larry Brown became permanent new starters by the time the second Steelers repeat occurred , Robbin Cole replaced Andy Russell , Donnie Shell replaced Glen Edwards , Steve Furness ,replaced Ernie Holmes , thats 4 probowl players positions that were renewed . The fg kicker Garry Anderson ,replaced a forner probowl fg kicker Roy Gerala halfback Sidney Thornton replaced a former 1000 yd rusher in Rocky Bleier , Stalworth replaced a future probowl wr in Frank Lewis . The Steelers handled the transition of talent better then the dolphins ,which actually is the most underrated contept ignored about the Steelers 70's dynasty because of the over permeating myth that the no exclusive free egency era meant every team carried all of its talent throughout a players prime years .The 72 dolphins were very fortunate to defeat that Steelers team without the benifets or Pittsburgh not possessing or hose 5 hofers and quality cb on it's roster yet .Every Steelers 70''s SB winning team and it's 76 team would have beaten any dolphins SB campaign team . Pittsburgh conquered the dolphins in the 1979 divisional rd with Griese , kuechenberg, Langler ,Mathison ,all relics of the dolphins SB teams , venerable talent in Delvin Williams ,Tony Nathan ,Nat Moore ,a elite defense , Bob kuechenberg pre game statements essentially duplicating your assessment , and the Steelers answered that biased proclamation with a 34 to 14 beat down . In no objective context would the 70:s SB winning Steelers be succumbed by the dolphins SB winning teams ,as previously mentioned I'd also include a reasonably healthy "Franco ,Rocky " 1976 Steelers team in this equation , that same 76 Steelers team who nearly shutout the dolphins in it's season contest victory vs the fins ,a team who still had multiple members still on its roster . That 1972 dolphins win , Pittsburgh rallied from a huge deficit and forced the dolphins to utilize giving up a safety to preserve by the skin of it's teeth a narrow victory , again , this version of Pittsburgh hadn't yet aquired the services of 5 hofers and a excellent reserve cb on it's roster . I respectfully disagree with your theory .

    252 Yards Rushing by Dallas just killed Miami. Was a Super Bowl Record.

    The Cowboys had the best team ever put on a football field this year. People will disagree and no one mentions them anymore but that is out of ignorance. HOF cornerback on both sides, HOF SSHOF defensive tackle possibly the best football player ever in Bob Lilly (as stated by Bill Walsh) HOF QB HOF offensive Tackle, HOF TE, HOF WR on both sides, and being coached by a HOF coach. Oh yeah and a HOFer on the bench at the end of his career Forrest Gregg. The possibly the best back in the league this year in #33 Thomas, One of the best TEs of the late 60s in Billy Truax, Calvin Hill on the sideline injured, a man that will go into the HOF eventually and should’ve been there long ago Chuck Howley, I believe a 5x All-Pro and the only player to win a Super Bowl MVP from the losing team. Back these players up with great linemen and reserves that would go on and play in three more SB in the next 7 yrs. add in the Dolphins HOFers that got whupped this game and damn I miss the old days.

      I'm giving it to the Steelers of the mid-70s, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Staubach could run rings around Bradshaw, but otherwise I think the Steelers were superior.

    • @Boomhower89
      @Boomhower89 Год назад

      @@johnphelan4215 they were great and Bradshaw was the weak point on that team. He couldn’t read defenses but was big and strong enough that it was hard to bring him down quickly. Cowboys of the early 90s, 49ers of the early mid 80s, Lions of the 50s, Browns of the late 50s, pack of the early 60s. And of course the early 70s Miami teams. All great can’t forget the Vikings, Chiefs, and Raiders. I miss the golden age of Football.

      And back then you could want a team to lose but not because of taunting OT showboating just because you may be a fan of the opposition. But you knew if the team you wanted to lose won they wouldn't be putting down the other team the way they do now. Most Ayers were true gentlemen and showed good sportsmanship after the game back then

      You can also see slot of that in the 1978 Dolphins Cowboys game that was played in Miami that Miami won. Yeah Hollywood Henderson was in the game for Dallas but other than that the two teams just went out and played just lime in this Super Bowl

      Jobs taken seriously. Most had off season jobs. Couldn't afford to get cut. You meant business on the field. No guaranteed contracts. Very little taunting. Players really professional.

    I'm surprised it took the NFL so long to get the goalposts out of the end zone.

      It's a wonder the regressives don't whine about that, the demise of the straight-on placekicker and the Super Bowl now being played in prime time with half the audience tuning in only for the halftime concert and the commercials. Players for sure are not allowed to smile, show any joy or have opinions about anything outside of the sport they play.

      The goalpost cost the Redskins a year later when a Billy Kilmer pass hit the goalpost, if the Redskins score on that drive, it might have been a different game.

    Super Bowl 4 was also held in Tulane Stadium but at that game, the field was real grass. Artificial turf was all the rage in the early 70s despite the fact the players hated it as it was like playing on concrete and joint injuries happened far more often compared to playing on natural grass

    How Miami made it to the Super bowl instead of Kansas City, I'll never know. Dallas' defense was magnificent; Landry's magnum opus.

      We would have beat them 2 out of 3 , they lost to Wash and we should have beat WASH 17 - 0 , then next tear we beat them in Dallas .
