Except they should have lost, and the NFL famously apologized to the Giants afterwards. There was even talk of replaying the final play but they decided against it due to logistics. For years the Giants had the apology letter from the League hung framed in the old Giants Stadium. Had everyone not rushed off the field so fast the refs would have correctly called the penalties on the last play and the Giants would have re-kicked the chip shot field goal for the win.

I remember this game back in the day. I've been a life-long 49er fan and I still have to say 2 things about Terrell Owens. First, the guy is a ridiculously great athlete. Seeing him being about to put defenders on their ass after he caught the ball was amazing to watch. Second, the guy was absolute locker-room cancer. I don't know if I've ever seen someone sew discord in a team anywhere near as badly as TO did both in San Francisco and Philidelphia. He'd somehow manage to carry his team into the playoffs, then damned near break the team apart once they were knocked out of the playoffs because everyone hated each other. To be the cause of both is just unbelievable. I just don't know how someone can be so good and so bad at the exact same time.

Same here. Lifelong Niner fan and I was thrilled when TO was gone.
He whined about Garcia not going deep enough. So they put Rattay in, who had a hell of an arm, then TO dropped pass after pass right on his hands.
Hell, in the "The Catch 2" game, it wouldn't even have been close if TO hadn't been dropping passes in the endzone.

That failed Giants FG at end was being tried on 3rd down. Had the time not been used up, the Giants would have gotten another chance. (Should have been a spike?)
I found this game among thr 2002-2003 NFL playoffs (i.e., following the 2002 season, because the playoffs come after New Year's ). There was no (defensive) pass interference called, but the Giants were flagged for ineligible man downfield, and the game clock was out of time, so the game could end on the offensive penalty. The next day, it was announced what the correct calls were, although this could not affect the game:
Yes, it was defensive pass interference
Yes, there was ineligible man downfield, but not on the on-field-cited player, who had reported as being eligible.
So there would have been offsetting penalties, and there would have been untamed play (even though this wasn't just a defensive penalty??).

As a Mets and Niners fan, it's funny that your misery gives me such joy in the opposite direction on both these counts. It's okay, Matt Barr still gives me nightmares from a few years before this. I will say that the Yankees losing 4 in a row, after all my obnoxious friends couldn't keep their mouths shut about how invincible they were, and not long after A-Rod swatted the ball out of Arroyo's glove, was just as sweet to me as this Niners win.

I was a kid when I watched this game live. I’ll never forget after the game, the field goal snapper, who came out of retirement to play that game, said “I’d give anything except my family to have not come out of retirement to play this game.” Feels like yesterday.

21 years later that crazy ass tight end that kicked the helmet was Dan Campbell. Now he leads his Detroit Lions against the 49ers this coming weekend!
