It would be considering that not that many big 4 North American sports stars are professional bowlers. Actually, the only one I can think of is Mookie Betts. He's not exactly winning national tournaments, granted, but he's managed to bowl a 300 on a PBA oil pattern, which easily places him in the top .1% of all bowlers, if not .01% or even higher. Of course, he makes up for that by being a generational talent at his day job. The only bowler I can think of who's excelled at both bowling and another sport/game at not just professional, but world-class, levels is Walter Ray Williams Jr., who's got a legit case as the greatest bowler of all time, or at least the greatest northpaw if you prefer Earl Anthony. In his case, he's also one of the all-time great horseshoe pitchers, winning global events, and I think he's a scratch golfer.
This video touched me. I grew up a Steelers fan in the Carolinas, largely due to my dad, but other than him, it was Troy. It had to be Troy. Who else could make you love that side of the ball in that way. Who else could inspire you, gobsmack you, and fire you up in that way in that era. I'm a Panthers fan now, hometown teams just felt right to me once Troy retired, and the Panthers going on that wild run to 15-1 and a super bowl appearance right as I lost the guy who made me a football fan sealed it. But I'll always have fondness for this era of Steelers football. Forever in my heart.
I’m in the same boat, the first video of yours I remember watching was the Pernell Mcphee one when I was in middle school and I am about to graduate college in may hopefully. One of my favorite youtube channels
Hands down, the most violent football game I've ever seen. Nothing has reached this level for me since. And man, it was theater from beginning to end. I was hoping you'd make a video about this game someday. Much like your video about the 2003 AFC Championship Game, I think this is one of the special times where the history of the NFL bent like light through a prism. And what we got was beautiful.
I look forward to Ravens Steelers rivalry games every year. Some teams dig deep and give 110% for the occasional game, rarely we'll see both teams in a game remove the limiters, but when the Ravens and Steelers meet it's like everybody on both sides of the ball have gone full Kaioken x10.
I was in Heinz for this. The place went absolutely electric when Troy caught that pick-6. Absolute elation. Thanks for the trip down memory lane and breakdown!
These teams go all the way at it every single goddamn time, and it doesn’t hurt that both teams have been well-run and consistently good to great for 25 years, which means that there’s almost always stakes beyond just the rivalry for the sake of itself
This game cemented the rivalry into NFL history forever, two legendary defenses standing on their heads for 60 minutes, waiting for that breaking point to happen, eventually Polamalu found it. I remember this game like it was yesterday, watching with my dad in our old family living room, every Steelers/Ravens game since has been an echo of that 2008 Championship matchup. It was storybook, I’ll remember that day always
Brett, a replay of the 2006 divisional game between the Chargers and the Patriots - the last game Marty Schottenheimer ever coached - would be awesome. Incidentally, future Ravens OC Cam Cameron was the Chargers offensive coordinator that day. Little known is Marty Schottenheimer was wearing a microphone for that game and NFL Films NEVER released that audio. I saw a partial transcript. Chargers GM AJ Smith was quoted later as saying you cannot have a coach on-the-sidelines who snaps like a 'dry twig' under pressure in the playoffs. He meant Marty's meltdown that day.
Damn. Huge Chargers fan and never heard that anecdote. I'm still not over that loss though so not sure I'd be able to watch that video 😅. Probably the best team we ever had. 14-2 and LT was unbelievable.
@@franciscoduran4618 Yep. We had Peyton's number and beat them the next two years in the playoffs. Not saying it was a guarantee but we would have certainly had a good chance. Still stings
@@timothystamm3200 Precisely. Marty had panic attacks on the sideline. Was calling for someone to come calm him down. Going for it on 4th-and-11? Really?
Polamalu was the most fun player to watch. You never knew what he would do, but you knew he’d do something crazy. We need more players like him and more defensive schemes that can take advantage of those kinds of players.
BRETT You my friend have a BRILLIANT Skill with Storytelling. Please do more like this! This feels like an Early Christmas Present that I never saw coming!
Ravens-Steelers 2008 to 2012 was the most brutal five year run between two teams in the history of this league. Met in the playoffs twice. Accounted for three AFC Championships, two Superbowl titles and, at least, a hundred concussions. Amazing run in the AFC North.
Fantastic video here. I just watched this game through again a couple of nights ago, and it's just as gripping and cheek clenching as ever. Love the play breakdowns too! Never saw those plays with that much analysis. Just wish you had delivered a tad more on the hits, you hyped up the physicality and didn't even include the absolute leveling of McGahee by Clark, which is to date still one of the nastiest collisions I have ever seen.
This game and this rivalry as a whole is what football is and should be about. Ride and die a Steelers fan, but will always respect what has been brought out by the Ravens. I'm not that old, but I grew up to see this era of the sport, and it makes me emotional a bit to see what once was. Also, Polamalu is easily one of the greatest defenders of all time. Being able to read plays like he did with the athleticism he had... I hope teams and fans that have/had players like him appreciate that talent. Maybe it was all in the hair eh? If any Ravens fans see this... cheers to continued great rivalry games!
Ravens-Steelers feel like a true rivalry. It’s both respectful yet somehow petty at the same time and no matter the record of both teams, it’s always a playoff game. And seeing Ray Lewis and Troy Polamalu for those matchups were a thing of beauty. As a Ravens fan, I freaking hate the Steelers but it’s hate filled with respect. Let’s make this the premier NFL rivalry.
Excellent work as always. As a titans fan, watching CJ2K dust defenders effortlessly was always a pleasure. And watching two of our AFC central rivals duke it out with all those absolute legends on the field? Man. A person can only hope to be that lucky to witness that again.
Crazy that this was a "young" newer head coaching matchup alongside the massive amount of probowlers, and they are still both coaching their respective teams 16 years later as the longest tenured HCs in the league.
Steelers v Ravens is iconic, even today. For those 3 hours it's like being teleported back in time, when there were bona fide rivalries and defense was king. Somehow, someway the games are always nail biters. I think it is so unique because while the two teams (and fans) hate each other, they also have a sort of respectful admiration of each other. It's can't miss football we get to watch at least 2 times a year (3x if we're lucky).
Man I miss physical, smash mouth football so much. Will never forget watching this and the SB with my dad. I get players health is more important then entertainment, but nothing today comes close to these games.
I'm so glad to see what was a Pivital time in my childhood growing up be recognized as a Masterclass. No division compares the the physical 4 AFC North
28 Pro Bowlers in a single game...is that an NFL record? I remember how INSANE that game was. In retrospect, it felt like watching a Hall of Fame game in real time.
Why so many Pro Bowlers? -- This was in 2008, three years before the "2011 NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement." That agreement ushered in today's salary cap system in which players become free agents after 4 years, and many switch teams. Today, teams can no longer "afford"' to keep a dozen Pro Bowlers on their roster, with the current salary cap structure . . . Regarding the physicality of the game, the 2011 agreement limited the number of padded practices and 2-a-day practices. That along with rules regarding concussions, has led to less "physical" play than what you saw in the 2008 game.
It’s so wild seeing old concepts being reused and repackaged for modern times. Teams are using those trap 2 pressures so much now, and LeBeau used them years ago
I'm a lifelong browns fan. I hate the Steelers....and I really hate the Ravens. With that being said, I'm glad to have them as rivals. Had to think about it, 2008 was the year after I got out of the navy and I was in a bad bad relationship. I didn't even know this ever happened...
One of the best games ever. I don’t think that’s hyperbole. Two hard nosed teams, two all time great defenses in another chapter of the best rivalry in the modern NFL. Even though it’s tough to look back at this game as a Ravens fan, it’s hard to not respect what both of these teams brought to the table. You can talk about all the pro bowlers, but what about the hall of famers on both sides? Lewis, Reed and Troy are obvious. But guys like Big Ben, Suggs, Harrison, Yanda, Ngata and Ward have at least strong cases to make the HOF themselves. Crazy to think Flacco was a rookie this season. Talk about a trial by fire. He gets to face Ray Lewis and Ed Reed every day in practice and then gets to face Troy and James Harrison in the biggest game of his life.
Great video. It should be noted that this terminology for plays (cold me, gun tuff etc) are not set in stone. We ran the same defensive blitz in college and called it left cross jug.
Question about 13:25: are modern day punters just way better than those in the early 2000s, or have I just been blessed enough to only watch really good punters in my years following the NFL, because I have never ever seen a 20-something yard punt
Reading the recaps of the game the next day, my favorite had to be: "This was the game that convinced millions of parents to not sign their kids' football permission slips."
Great video. Not as painful as I imagined as a Ravens fan - excellent work as always BK. Also I put a 0.00000% guarantee the Ravens won't lose to Pitt on Saturday.
NGL im so tired i read the title and thought why 28 professional bowling players in the afc championship was something notable
you and me both 😂😂
28 copies of Earl Anthony on one field. (Look it up). We could only hope.
No way Belichick is gonna have 28 receivers on the roster
