It's because when the patriots played the steelers during the regular season that year Jesse James did the exact same thing to take the lead and they called it an incomplete pass and took the points back ultimately allowing the patriots to win. The NFL also changed this rule/made a more clear distinction after the season ended because of controversy surrounding what the refs were and weren't calling catches.

Is it just me or did he really want that Zach Ertz TD to be overturned. I mean he clearly had 3 feet down before diving to the end zone, he’s easily a runner at that point
Pederson said in his book, the 4th and 1 pass play to Zach Ertz was the most vital play of the Super Bowl for him for the Eagles offense, they are literally in their own part of the field and are behind of the Patriots in terms of points, so going for the touchdown was the ultimate goal of the drive. Brandon Graham forced fumble/strip sack is also the most important play for the defense that night.
Doug Pederson also admitted later on that the Philly Special was actually meant to be used in the NFC championship game and it was meant to be a third down play that way if it failed the Eagles still had an opportunity to run one more play. But because the Eagles beat the shit out of the Vikings there was no need for the Philly special that night

How on earth the ground in the scoring endzone could possibly cause an incomplete pass when the player is diving into the endzone, with arms extended and BOTH HANDS HOLDING THE BALL, is beyond me. It's a touchdown the moment the ball breaks the endzone plane, so how could somebody diving, again I cant stress this enough, WITH BOTH HANDS HOLDING THE BALL, into the endzone, be considered anything but a touchdown?

First, each score is assessed, whether the touchdown is legitimate. Here, because the ball momentarily separated from the receiver's hands, the call needed to be looked at and reviewed. First, the receiver caught the ball. Second, the receiver then made a forward-like football move with the ball still in his possession. Third, the receiver got tackled with the ball still in his possession as he reached and broke the plane of the goal line. However, as the receiver reached for the goal line, the ball popped out - momentarily. The officials and New York had to judge whether the receiver crossed the goal line first with the ball in his possession or as the receiver sought to cross the goal line, did the receiver lose possession of the ball. Super Bowl 48 is my favorite since I’m a Seahawks fan but I understand for everyone else, it sucked. But objectively speaking, this is definitely the best of the past 10, maybe even 20, years. Tons of offense, high score and a back and forth game that came down to the wire, the best game you could ask for.

Been watching the Birds religiously since 1969. I went to games in Franklin Field. Saw Sonny Jurgenson there, Bullet Bob Hayes, Roger Staubach, and more. Suffered through the Eagles in white helmets with green wings and an older Roman Gabriel. Went to a lot of games at the vet especially under Vermeil. Wilbert Montgomery was my favorite Eagle then. Got my hopes dashed by the first wildcard team to win a SB, the Raiders. Loved the Buddy teams on defense. Was honored to see Reggie White dominate people. Some of the best defenses in history. The body bag game. Unfortunately, Buddy forgot offense was important. Hopes dashed again in 2004. Said please just once before I leave this rock and was rewarded with this classic. I almost died when Brady fumbled and it settled in that we finally got one. No matter what happens Sunday, I have this!

I just feel bad for the homie Nick Foles. I mean this guy calmly and coolly led the team throughout the end of the season, throughout every playoff game (including an ass kicking of the Vikings) and a brilliant performance in this super bowl, won the MVP, only to end right back as a backup the next season. Then Carson Wentz got hurt AGAIN and he won them 1 or 2 (I can’t remember) playoff games only to be put as a backup again. Dude definitely deserved to be a starter somewhere.
The thing about Foles is he could have legendary games like this then a week later he would look dreadful. To inconsistent to be a starter but amazing as a backup
Brady also had no Edelman or Brandin Cooks (his number 1 deep threat option all year). Threw for 505 yards, 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions against a Eagles defense that had only given up 33 points in their last four games including two playoff games. Definitely one of the greatest performances ever even if he did lose. Definitely best performance I've seen by a losing player.
Being a die-hard Eagles fan all my life every time I watch this it brings tears to my eyes.... I was at a bar with all my friends.. I'll never forget that moment for the rest of my life
The kicker and a couple of lineman are all that's left. And Kelce and Cox are on the verge of retirement. I love how the boys are back with completely different coach and different offense. I also think the eagles defense is better now than in 2018.
Shoulda had another one in 2023 against the chiefs... they let that slip away sadly. That's one you gotta grab, and it was in their grasp. I remember being so disappointed watching that 2nd half. It was definitely tough. Hopefully, they can get the momentum going again this year!
I went to this superbowl (not a fan of either team but cuz I'm from the Twin Cities area) incredible experience. If the superbowl is ever in your town i suggest going even if it's between two teams you aren't a big fan of cuz there's no experience like this in football
I immediately bought the season dvd after that happened. I don't live in the past or get too hyped by the preseason. Even when they tearing up teams during the season, I still remain stoic. I gotta admit though, I am looking forward to this season!
I remember when Bill Bellichek took his final timeout with 2:03 left and instantly thought he lost a step...opened up the entire playbook to the eagles to get that first down on that 2nd down but of course Pederson didn't take advantage of it and didn't throw the 1-1 matchup with 10 in the box.
Nick files isn’t one of the greatest NFL qb’s to ever play the game. But when it mattered most in this super bowl he was the best qb on the planet for one night.
NFL Throwback, could you upload a full game highlight of the last Super Bowl the Eagles were in vs the Patriots? I want to get hyped before the game this Sunday.
his 2nd greatest game was when he threw 7 touchdown passes against the raiders his rookie year in 2013. I remember watching it in absolute awe. Then they benched him so he COULDNT break peyton’s record. insanity
Brandon Graham, what can you say, when you need a big play another legend steps up & gives you an amazing play but Brady never quits even when most people will say the games over, Tom Brady isn't an ordinary player, he doesn't know anything else but to think about winning & win as losing isnt an option in his career !
With the current rules for sure. Makes a football move-3 steps, crosses the plane with control. But I think this was still in the period when they were changing the rules every year.

Our high school team played Nick Foles and his team and took a shellacking. He didn't play much of the second half, but our boys never gave up and our fans got respect for the number in attendance from the PA announcer.
I hope Brady never forgets he got beat by a bunch of backup players and next man up players. We will win more Superbowls but this will always be the greatest win no matter how many we win!

The reason people hate Chris Collinsworth in Philly is that Zach Ertz took two steps before he dove into the end zone and Collinsworth still kept questioning it.
Philly letting Wentz go back to starter the following aeason, and then letting Foles go after, still goes down as 1 of the biggest blunders ever. Foles was complete MAGIC in Philly for some reason! They could have built a long term dynasty with what they could have traded Wentz for (at that time)

Agreed. People will say 49 but this one was better imo
EVER 😈🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅🦅
Super Bowl 48 is my favorite since I’m a Seahawks fan but I understand for everyone else, it sucked. But objectively speaking, this is definitely the best of the past 10, maybe even 20, years. Tons of offense, high score and a back and forth game that came down to the wire, the best game you could ask for.
Ant remember exactly but I think there was only one punt in the game
@@LessGo7921 As a Seahawks fan, sb 49 was not better 😔
Doug Pederson won two Super Bowls against Bill Belichick with the first being Brett Favre’s backup QB.

Yeah that didn’t age well.
My grandfather was born in ‘31, never saw an Eagles Super Bowl win until he was 86 (almost 87) years old. He passed later that year (2018) a few days before Christmas. As a lifelong Eagles fan I’m still glad he got to see this!!!

As a Jaguars fan the Eagles avenged us. Since we should of been there because MYLES JACK WAS NOT DOWN. The 2017 AFC Championship was a perfect form of refball.
Dw Doug will win the Jags one before we know it
Duval baby
Jax still had the ball up 10 and Bortles wilted in 4th and the D gave up 2 TDs. Can't blame the refs on blowing a 10 point lead

Jags will be on the rise

The amount of driding Cris Collinsworth doing for the patriots is astounding.

The "uh-oh!" when Brady is strip-sacked is the biggest tell.
How in the hell did Al and Chris think that was going to be called incomplete lol?
In the afc championship there was an extremely similar play where the referees called it not a catch.
The fact that philly dog walked Minnesota two weeks prior then won it all IN THEIR HOUSE 😭

As an Aussie Birds fan since 88' this day was so amazing and so surreal. The best day of my life.
I watched it alone and ran out into the street when we won, and lemme tell ya, it was nothing like Broad street.
Never noticed how there was a clear pass interference on the 2 pt conversion after Ertz’ touchdown
And the ref was looking right at it. And did nothing.
I’m telling u man watching BG get that strip sack still gives me chills. That was one the clutches moments I have ever seen!!!
One of the best Super Bowls! Great to see Philly win it! Especially against B&B!!!
Wrong fokes was 12-2 from 2017-2018
might be a hot take but this super bowl is a little underrated, like brady threw for over 500 and crazy shit kept happening the whole game
I think Brady set a passing record
Brady also had no Edelman or Brandin Cooks (his number 1 deep threat option all year). Threw for 505 yards, 3 touchdowns and 0 interceptions against a Eagles defense that had only given up 33 points in their last four games including two playoff games. Definitely one of the greatest performances ever even if he did lose. Definitely best performance I've seen by a losing player.
How is it underrated? Anybody that watched said it was great
@@finnburke2709 clearly he just needed to play like ass, whenever he did that, the Pats won 😂

2018 was not that long ago and not many players from this Eagles team remain. That’s crazy.
The kicker and a couple of lineman are all that's left. And Kelce and Cox are on the verge of retirement. I love how the boys are back with completely different coach and different offense. I also think the eagles defense is better now than in 2018.
it was at the time, BG cox, barnett lane, and kelce
Not really. 5 years is an eternity in the NFL. Half the roster turns over every 3-4 seasons now.

Exactly
No we should’ve won both that’s still a disappointment
We got screwed against KC
I remember when Bill Bellichek took his final timeout with 2:03 left and instantly thought he lost a step...opened up the entire playbook to the eagles to get that first down on that 2nd down but of course Pederson didn't take advantage of it and didn't throw the 1-1 matchup with 10 in the box.
Most people including head coaches don’t understand what you and I noticed.
Agreed
I noticed it too. Missed opportunity
Nick files isn’t one of the greatest NFL qb’s to ever play the game. But when it mattered most in this super bowl he was the best qb on the planet for one night.
Facts
I have watched this video dozens of times over the years and I still get a pit in my stomach like I have no idea what's going to happen. Go Birds.
Most yards in any game, philly special, brandon graham strip sack of brady, one punt total, this game had it all.
NFL Throwback, could you upload a full game highlight of the last Super Bowl the Eagles were in vs the Patriots? I want to get hyped before the game this Sunday.

Fun fact: Malcolm Butler did not play in this game. No injuries or suspension.
I love it.
He thought he was special.
They put him in his place.
Patriot Way.
He was terrible that postseason
Brady threw for 505 yards and 0 INT and Pats still lost. Nick Foles MVP and greatest game of his career.
his 2nd greatest game was when he threw 7 touchdown passes against the raiders his rookie year in 2013. I remember watching it in absolute awe. Then they benched him so he COULDNT break peyton’s record. insanity

Really it was better than the patriots beating the rams for the first Super Bowl they won
This Super Bowl was one of the best I’ve seen. "Another super bowl game that ends".- Al Michaels.
wow I never realized how close that Hail Mary at the end was , hit gronk in the hand
And Gronk’s asking for a PI call from the refs 😆
Brandon Graham, what can you say, when you need a big play another legend steps up & gives you an amazing play but Brady never quits even when most people will say the games over, Tom Brady isn't an ordinary player, he doesn't know anything else but to think about winning & win as losing isnt an option in his career !
I remember watching this with my family...and was in shock at what I saw with the ending. What a night to remember as a Philadelphia Eagles fan!
Super Bowl LII still remains as one of the most hectic and insane final moments and shit if Gronk would’ve gotten that Hail Mary pass from Brady
They would've failed on the two point conversion anyway

A rematch with Brady and the Patriots, and the setup was also similar to the first meeting. The Patriots were the defending champions that season, and we knocked them out in a shootout game

Philly letting Wentz go back to starter the following aeason, and then letting Foles go after, still goes down as 1 of the biggest blunders ever.
Foles was complete MAGIC in Philly for some reason! They could have built a long term dynasty with what they could have traded Wentz for (at that time)
