    Almost 6 months later, I have gotten a new tailgate back on my truck. I ended up putting one together from Toyota Genuine parts. Here's the video: ruclips.net/video/oyDTV0oNYHw/видео.html

    Awesome video and great surveillance footage! Here in the state I live in where Tacoma's is the most popular midsize truck, the tailgate is the most sought after and stolen item from the vehicle. Also the 1996 to 2004 Tacoma's are the most stolen. Sorry this happened to you. Thanks for sharing!

      Thanks. Unfortunately, my number came up and I was very surprised by how quickly the lock can be defeated. Hopefully this video gets around to inform other Taco owners. I had now idea those model years are popular to steal.

      Thanks, Lynn. Hopefully these thieves slip up and they get caught; and my stuff recovered. Soon will be nice, lol. Take care

    I feel you man. Infuriating !! Mine just got stolen 2 weeks ago at Costco SANTA CLARITA 1030 AM busy parking lot , incredible. Fortunately they got it on video , vehicle and plate, hopefully Sheriff pursues it and can recover. Doubt it !!
    I can’t believe how much time they put into yours. Mine took seconds they said but couldn’t let me see video. Mine is 2015 Tacoma TRD SPORT.

      I am sorry this happened to you. Likewise , I know how you feel. Nowhere is safe these days-- this is a difficult reality to accept.
      Moreover, for the few minutes of work, they are making $300 to $500 but it costs us or insurance $1000 (for aftermarket parts) and up to $4000 for Toyota certified.

    This is horrible man. Sorry this happened to you. Like you said "no consequences."

      Thanks. It super sucks. These are bad times to be having this stuff happening-- not like the good times when it's easier to brush off (financially.)

    Sorry 4 your loss;
    Any further comment from me would be counter productive.
    Your a great guy; pray 4 our enemies;
    Play offense when possible

    that sucks. I would love to know how he bypassed the lock. I wonder if its a matter of busting the handle or immatating one of those flat keys

      Thanks. He used a shim to go between the tailgate frame and the plastic handle. Then it is a tug at the lever and the handle is unlocked.
      I realized this when I inspected the handle assembly. The security measures were designed during different times; when tailgates weren't sought after.
      P.s. a genuine replacement is sold in parts. I just put together my replacement and I am working on a video showing how it is assembled.

    Hey old neighbor! I don’t miss LA but I do miss my old neighbors! Since I was right next door and was a very light sleeper, I might have stopped this with a yell out the upstairs window but who knows. Hope you and the family are well, drop me a note, Kelly

      Hey, Kelly! Hope you guys are doing well. That did pop in my head! I bet it would have been different (much different) if you were around. The street here is doing good. We are all still very tight. You find out who your neighbors are by who comes out when the going gets tough. ...Your neighbor across from you moved out and turned it into a casino. We let em know this wasn't that kind of neighborhood and they quit a few months after. It's a short term rental now.
      We are doing our best to get by until it gets good again 🤞.

    So sorry for you to have gone through something like this. It is very traumatic to your sense of safety and security. Something I have and many other people have gone through. Stay strong and do what is good for you and your family.

    My next door had their truck stolen. They didn't. Check for any fingerprints. They went for DNA.

      That doesn't get more "real close to home" than that. DNA is hard to refute. The PD didn't gather any DNA.
