I did this on my 2010 F150 years ago. Put a little glue in the flat head screw driver slots for a little extra deterrence. Just bought a 2023 Taco limited and put clamps on it as well. Cheap and quick.
Not a bad idea except change out the screw on the hose clamp to like a weird star bit screw that nobody carries with them. Even a phillips-head screw would be better than a flathead that you can just stick a knife in
Yeah, saw that simple remedy on KC's Tundra channel, pretty ingenious and real easy. Keeping the tailgate locked is the best option but for people like me, without the power lock option, sometimes you forget to lock it. Good info, Rob!
Clamping collars comes with an Key to clamp it at Home Depot made of steel would probably work better just got my tailgate stolen looking for a lock and might go with that and strip the bolt so they can’t remove it even with the key thanks for the tip
hose clamp the tailgate was one of the absolute first things I did to my tacoma... Lol i also chained down and pad locked the spare tire , folks love stealing those too
Cut the head off the bolt of the hose clamp with a Dremel disc after installing it so the flat screw driver can not be used to remove it. It can be removed but you just made it 3 times harder and longer time is required to remove it.
JUST WELD THE TAILGATE ATTACHMENTS. THAT WAY IF THEY REALLY WANT YOUR TAILGATE, THEY WOULD HAVE TO TAKE THE WHOLE TRUCK. THAT'S IF THEY CAN EVEN START IT UP. 😅. BUT IF THEY ARE REALLY THAT DESPERATE. TOW THE DAM TRUCK & SEE HOW FAR THEY GET 😂.
My tailgate was stolen, and I found it on market place and got it back. But now I am noticing a lot of play in the driver side hinge. Can't find a part for the bushing, is there a bushing on the driver side? Or does it just go metal to metal?
I put the hose clamp on but wasn’t a fan. I got the Maggard version. It has a little plastic cover over the hose clamp to help protect from a grinder or screwdriver pry attack. It’s expensive compared to a hose clamp for sure, but I live in a city where that is rampant. Hopefully this will help.
Rob, I have enjoyed your VIDs. . . Thanks. Side note, I wrapped my hose clamp with electrical tape to protect the paint or rub spots. Again, thanks! Bob
Big ole scratch under the handle, problem solved. I was flabbergasted that I couldn’t actually take off my 2nd gen tailgate to unload because of the wiring.
My mod on my truck was putting on a shell where you cannot lower the tailgate unless you unlock the shell window and raise it up. Since my tailgate has no lock itself it was a workaround, albeit an expensive one.
I have a 2017 Tacoma. Never thought of anyone stealing my tailgate until today when I saw someone else post in my area that thiers was stolen. Thanks Rob for the tip!
Seems like it would dig into or scratch the paint. Midwest is a salt belt for snow. I've seen a bolt on piece for this like the Gladiator. It was a piece that used the existing bolt. Awesome video point!! Thanks.
Slide some heat shrink over the clamp except where it goes thru the screw. Heat shrink it. It will look cleaner and it helps from scarring the metal from the tight compression.
I really should do this because I've had may insurance company drop me for having too many claims for things sort of out of my control like hit n run theft and trees falling. I don't think tailgate theft is a problem in my area but if it's that simple why not do that clamp thing to help limit your risk of needing to file a claim.
I also think it is like the Gladiator and you can lay the cable over the notch to have the gate hold up at 45 degree for hauling lumber etc. Maybe - don't know if cable twists around like that.
I don't know if you see comments on older videos, but thank you for covering this, I didn't know you had already done it. I saw the clamp solution on another 'tuber's video as well.
Rob, for a $1.79 at ACE Hardware it's worth the trip. What size? Maybe I missed it. Looks like 3/4"-13/4" should work (SAE20). Thanks for the tip. I just locked mine up tonight.
Tacoma, did you see this video? Can you add that to the list? Great feedback Rob! Thankfully I have the lock and the tonneau cover. Hopefully that's good enough.
Hello Rob. New Tacoma owner here. Thanks for enlightening us on this easy install. The Gladiator tailgate bracket is interesting, anyway to incorporate one for Tacomas? Thank you Rob!
@@RobMotive yes Boss it covers it but you ends by paying the deductible but I'm grateful with the insurance and your video to learn how to protect the tailgate
Hey Rob those ugly factory stickers are still there, 3 of them. Did this mod first thing when I saw you do it. Also to make a mod to the mod you could put black shrink tubing on the worm gear. But those stickers gotta go!
Yeah some people are like why bother I guess those are people with money and time on their hand as for me if can piss somebody off along the way while they're trying to steal from me mission accomplished
Rob, yes the thieves are everywhere didn’t realize the tailgate cost that much, but they do!! I guess the locking tailgate is a must have, glad I have that on the rebel I guess, as far as your gladiator that is pretty cool that they have somewhat of a deterrent for tailgate theft!! Great job FCA on that one!!👍

Is it true the gate chains on our tacoma tailgates are suppose to be lose on the left side only? I was told this by the dealership. Honestly I dont think that is true. Please let me know...
@@RobMotive yeah I have a little bit of play on my side too. I own a 2019 SR5 and just wasn't sure. I asked them to replace it and they told me it supposed to be like that.
This is great! Like you have mentioned, if they really want the gate, they will get it, regardless. It's a deterrent, nothing more, nothing less. If they are willing to stand there and dick around with it, then, they deserve it!

10 minutes ago I was viewing your video. Now my tailgate is secured. Thank you sir. Have a Blessed day
Glad to help. Just a simple thing to add a little security👍
Added this “feature” to my Tacoma 6 months ago! Thanks for posting for all to see! People don’t realize the market for stolen tailgates!
Absolutely! Such a simple way to help prevent it!👍
Not a bad idea except change out the screw on the hose clamp to like a weird star bit screw that nobody carries with them. Even a phillips-head screw would be better than a flathead that you can just stick a knife in
I'm going to do this! But I'm also going to weld the sucker on and paint it to match the color of the truck.
Yeah, saw that simple remedy on KC's Tundra channel, pretty ingenious and real easy. Keeping the tailgate locked is the best option but for people like me, without the power lock option, sometimes you forget to lock it. Good info, Rob!
Just a simple thing to prevent a big headache 👍
In my Tacoma I have double protection 2 different clamps just in case they get to the first one the second one it’s a lot harder
Now that’s being prepared!!!👍
Clamping collars comes with an Key to clamp it at Home Depot made of steel would probably work better just got my tailgate stolen looking for a lock and might go with that and strip the bolt so they can’t remove it even with the key thanks for the tip

hose clamp the tailgate was one of the absolute first things I did to my tacoma... Lol i also chained down and pad locked the spare tire , folks love stealing those too
I need to secure my spare!! Haven’t done that yet😬
This little trick also prevents the tailgate bushing from getting broken.
Just bought one for my Taco, thanks! But I am still gong to buy the Runnin4Tacos tailgate lock later.
I love this. Super simple and it will definitely slow and thieves down. My buddy just had his tailgate stolen. 1700 bucks. Ouch
Cut the head off the bolt of the hose clamp with a Dremel disc after installing it so the flat screw driver can not be used to remove it.
It can be removed but you just made it 3 times harder and longer time is required to remove it.

i remove tailgate to prevent damage because i get loads of rock from the quarry, made a diy load tailgate for that purpose
Sounds like a good idea👍
Thanks this is 1 of those tips worth their weight in $
My tailgate was stolen, and I found it on market place and got it back. But now I am noticing a lot of play in the driver side hinge. Can't find a part for the bushing, is there a bushing on the driver side? Or does it just go metal to metal?
Don’t know the part number, but I’m sure there’s a bushing.
I put a hose clamp on then tack welded the screw to furthered the whole thing.
some blue loctite might help with securing it and making it harder to remove
I put the hose clamp on but wasn’t a fan. I got the Maggard version. It has a little plastic cover over the hose clamp to help protect from a grinder or screwdriver pry attack. It’s expensive compared to a hose clamp for sure, but I live in a city where that is rampant. Hopefully this will help.

Thxs !! that's point!!!! take more time for stolen!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks my friend. Blessings !
It worked someone tried to take my tailgate on my tacoma yesterday (12/19/23). The hose clamp prevented them from taking it.
Great to hear! Hopefully they didn’t damage it while trying?
Big ole scratch under the handle, problem solved. I was flabbergasted that I couldn’t actually take off my 2nd gen tailgate to unload because of the wiring.
My mod on my truck was putting on a shell where you cannot lower the tailgate unless you unlock the shell window and raise it up. Since my tailgate has no lock itself it was a workaround, albeit an expensive one.
That’ll do the trick👍
This is really old news. This mod has been known since the 2016 model Tacoma although I’m sure there are new Tacoma owners who could benefit.
250,000 new Tacoma’s sold every year....I doubt it’s old news to many🤔
Tailgates have had the same mounting install for years and years, this is nothing new, right? LOL
I have a 2017 Tacoma. Never thought of anyone stealing my tailgate until today when I saw someone else post in my area that thiers was stolen. Thanks Rob for the tip!
Lock the tailgate
In a perfect world...yes.
Seems like it would dig into or scratch the paint. Midwest is a salt belt for snow. I've seen a bolt on piece for this like the Gladiator. It was a piece that used the existing bolt. Awesome video point!! Thanks.
Nope...it doesn’t touch anything when rotating. I remember the salt well😬
What about a zip tie?? What a great idea I’ll be doing this tomorrow.
Same premise, but a bit easier to defeat👍
@@RobMotive gotcha….thank you
Oh hell ya, definitely gonna do this, don't need an assless taco 🥴
Lol! Could always get implants...😬
@@RobMotive 😂
Slide some heat shrink over the clamp except where it goes thru the screw. Heat shrink it. It will look cleaner and it helps from scarring the metal from the tight compression.
Good tip👍
You could also just heat shrink over the whole thing, screw and all, that way thieves wouldn't even see a clamp to potentially unscrew.
I use my ryobi compact to strip the the hose clamp screw
SaBellCo makes a nice lock that fits over the pivot joint, 100 bucks for it but better than than a new tailgate!
A good option if you want to drop the cash. For me, this method is just as good👍
I really should do this because I've had may insurance company drop me for having too many claims for things sort of out of my control like hit n run theft and trees falling. Similar. However, you can’t remove it without taking the bracket off👍

Hello Rob. New Tacoma owner here. Thanks for enlightening us on this easy install. The Gladiator tailgate bracket is interesting, anyway to incorporate one for Tacomas? Thank you Rob!
Hey Breeze!! I’m sure one like the Gladdy could be installed...but you’d have to drill😬
Jb weld around the screw part to make it more difficult.
That would definitely make it more difficult!
Probably better to use a hose clamp that doesn’t have a flat head and just a 5/16 instead
Locking the tailgate is useless, they can punch the lock out. I've seen videos of thieves using a screw driver to punch it out.
I've done it to mine. Mainly cause we're about to take a long trip to to Colorado to see family.
Good idea for piece of mind👍
