My single-cab 1994 five-speed manual transmission rear-wheel-drive Toyota Pickup with a 22RE engine and 265,000 miles still runs perfectly. I bought it with about 150,000 miles for $2700 over ten years ago, and it has never broken down.
I had a 1989 Toyota Pickup -- 22RE -- it had 200,000 when I got it -- had over 350k when it was time to move it on -- sold it to a guy who worked at the Toyota plant in Princeton, IN -- it has almost 500k on it now -- pretty amazing really.
Pride of ownership runs deep with the owner of this Taco. Not many people take this kind of pride in their own property, let alone their vehicle. Love this.
Hello sir. I'm from Pakistan and a regular viewer of your channel because you bring to us the TOYOTAS. I fell in love with the TOYOTAS specially the ones from late 70s to the late 90s because of our 1978 Toyota Corolla third generation sedan which has been with us for the last 35 years in a pristine condition. I wish RUclips had an option to upload a picture so that I can show its picture. This Toyota Tacoma is absolutely gorgeous. The owner has justified his ownership in an immaculate way.
We are the original owners of a Toyota 1992 SR5 4X4 Extended cab pickup color: burgundy. We bought it new ($15,000) in December of 1991 in California and we moved it out with us to Missouri in 2022 for our retirement. Our truck is as clean as this truck and has 230,000 miles on it. It is true...if you love your truck, you will take care of it. In turn, it will take care of you! We get offers on it every time we drive it around. I collect parts for it also! Ha! Thanks for featuring this truck, it is a beauty!
I turned 16 in 1993 and certainly couldn’t afford paying that amount of money for a vehicle then! I had to wait until these were quite old to get them used. But I got 4 of these pickups since and I bought the 1993 SR5 I currently have over 15 years ago. These are my favorite vehicles. I also have 50 to 60 years old full size cars that I used to drive daily but they cost too much to operate now and some parts are getting hard to find for them.
I was a Toyota tech for five years, gave up wrenching for a better opportunity seven years ago. I don't miss much about it, especially being flat rate when the shop was slow. However I really enjoy your channel and always pick up something new. Takes me back to the good memories (some bad lol). I've been down to the training center in Aurora many times. Congrats on the new additions!!
Love my 2000’ Tacoma SR5 4cyl, manual 2WD 375,000 miles ❤ painted 1x reupholstered drivers seat 1x. I have a great mechanic and always fix things when they break and of course regular maintenance
Absolutely! I have a 2004 Honda Element with 231,000 miles and like you I fix things quickly. Looks brand new and have only replaced vtec solenoid and intake manifold gasket and the radiator. Every time I take it for service the mechanic wants to buy it from me.
I’m a Toyota Technician. I had a 97 Tacoma SR5 5 speed with the 4.30 gears and locking rear diff. Got it from the original owner who blew the head gasket on cylinder 4 at 267k miles. And that truck was just as clean as this one. The steering wheel wasn’t worn like this one, but the moon mist interior was immaculate. Absolutely amazing truck. I regret selling it. Beautiful truck Jeff. Good work TCCN Automotive 👏
My beloved 1st gen Tacoma just smacked a deer and it's pretty bad. I have the radiator support straightened, but notice the engine tips down slightly on the passenger side. The oil pan looks level, so is that how the 2.4 liter naturally sits in the engine bay looking slightly tilted from the top view? Thanks for any advice you can offer.
@@jasonborn867 yes indeed. The valve cover is always slanted a bit towards the passenger side. Totally normal. But you or someone you know smacked that poor defenseless deer, not your Tacoma 🦌
@@subtegral Well that is a huge relief because I was thinking the motor mount was bent. When I get the new radiator bolted in and the shroud attached I'm hoping the fan will be centered, which in theory should mean the engine never shifted. Really a big thanks for responding to my question!
This taco had a deer hit by the fuel tank area in rural Missouri... A very small young deer whose head was barely over top of the tire but it happened so fast!!
I just bought a 2007 4Runner with 55k miles and it still looks perfectly clean except for minor scratches on the hood (probably from a car wash) and a few scratches on the back. My goal is to bring it to 400k, and I’m confident I will largely because of this channel. Thank you, brother.
The lovely thing about Toyota’s is that if you take care of them they really take care of you forever. Can’t say the same for other cars and I say this from experience.
We got a 05 4runner that was purchased brand new at the dealership and only had test drive miles on it. We still have it here at home with 240k miles and runs great. Never had any major issues, only replaced all the normal wear and tear stuff. And just to show you how reliable Toyota is, it’s got the original transmission fluid because the dealership never wanted to change it. I did want to change it after but it was already too late but after 19 years the transmission is just fine.
Typing from a northeastern U.S. state, by far, THE most impressive thing about this Tacoma is how immaculate that frame is. If you don't have access to a lift, it's a MAJOR job to get up underneath a (daily driver) vehicle once or twice a year...........EVERY year.........to coat it (in whatever) ..........comprehensively enough to the point that, after 25 or whatever winters it looks brand new. I bet there are 3 year old vehicles that have more surface rust underneath them. Very impressive.
my long-winded story about the rusty issues... i had no clue about the issue until about 2o11 from a chatroom with a guy from Indiana with a Taco with frame issues, so i went to my local Toyota dealer and They Had No Clue about this issue then, they were VERY ill informed from Toyota.... it was another 7 or so years before i found a Tacoma forum that showed pictures from roached frames, mostly from the northeast area where the salt is thick heavy and constantly applied to the roadways and it startled me very much how bad it could get
I bought a 1999 tacoma new. 2.7L 4x4 manual. I put 206,000 miles on it and sold it in 2010. Lots of highway driving. Didn't have any problems mechanically until it had over 100,000 miles. Was a great truck. I miss it now.
I bought my 1999 Tacoma with 2.7 manual in 2010 with exact same miles. I still have it and it has 262000 miles now. I wonder if I bought your Tacoma. It is a single cab red in color.
This truck's first issue of concern started in 2o19... A very strange rattle that would come and go under certain circumstances at first, seemed to get noticeably more consistent over the next 18 months until it finally broke! at 193k miles! No seasoned Toyota mechanic I took it to could find it and just told me it was the clutch throwout bearing so I just believed he knew whut he was talking about... Until he was dead wrong about it
As a 99' 4runner daily driver I am so glad you shared this with us. The 5vz-fe is truly a legend in the making. I take great care of my truck (309k) miles 4th owner 2nd clutch, but this "Jeff" is on another level!!✌✌ Keep that Tacoma rolling 4ever!
Test drove a very well-kept 99 Land cruiser a couple of years ago with 351k, but had been recently been lifted (3" OME) and I needed something more highway ready. Got an 04 Sequoia with only 209k. Things like this make me feel just fine about long term prospects (outside of rust!)
My 1989 truck had great paint that was shiny 25 years later. The main thing that I miss that my 2003 or my 2021 does not have is the cup holder. In the summertime, the beverages would stay cool with the AC blowing on them, and in the winter, my coffee would stay warm with the heat blowing on that. One of the main problems that I had with my 1989 was that the clutch/brake bracket would shatter. I replaced the bracket three times in 25 years. Finally, I welded and reinforced it and I never had a problem again. Today, that truck is in Costa Rica. The guy I sold it to bought it for that purpose.
Despite the hated 3VZE V6 that powered many of them, the 1989-95 generation is my favorite. I had 4 of them and still have a ‘93 SR5 as a daily driver (and it has the 3.0, not a 3.4 swap!)
@@JAY-97-97 Many 96 - 98 3rd gen 4Runner owners do the cupholder mod to be like the 99 - '02 3rd gens. They say the cups are in the way of their precious HVAC switches, but that location has never bothered me. I reach around a tiny bit if I need to and it's no biggie.
Yes my clutch bracket broke twice, was welded twice. The first time it held up for a year. The second time they did it again...this time really did a good job at that body shop and never had another problem. The mechanic didn't want to touch it.
Great video! I drove a 1994 4Runner from 1994 to 1998. Those cup holders were awesome. Being in front of the vents, they kept your drinks cold in the summer and warm in the winter.
they also keep your eyes ON THE ROAD reaching for a beverage rather than looking down at the center floor console where they started placing these cupholders in 1998
Beautiful truck!! Well taking care of for sure sir! Definitely drives it carefully, parks away from everyone, keeps it in garage or covered, and long trips instead of stop and go driving. I have a 13 year old son and I would love to find one like this. Thanks again for sharing this gem!
I can really appreciate someone taking good care of their car. When my father passed away recently, I bought his 2010 FJ with only 93,000 KM....in near mint shape. I plan to keep it looking that way and get at least 300,000 miles on it. Rust from salt is the enemy up here in Canada! Great vid, as always. Thanks, man!
It had annual Krown rust protection most of it's life. Once I got it, I took the time to remove any surface rust (mostly the rear bumper and diff) and give it a few coats of POR-15. Since then I am constantly washing it during the winter months in a touch-less carwash to keep the salt off. In the summer I am constantly cleaning, and looking for rust. Been applying rust protection myself as well now, as the techs don't seem to give a shit about your vehicle these days. May seem overkill...but I REALLY love this FJ.
I love mine. Original owner 1997 Tacoma 2.4L extended cab 412k miles. Still running great , ac still blows nipple hard cold lol . Never anything major just the maintenance on time and the only thing I considered to upgrade was to kyb gr2 strut and shocks that’s it. Still on original cat and o2s which is crazy stilll passes smog. I love this thing
@@subtegral mine does not blow out anywhere near that cold anymore, it used to LOL ... i think i have a dirty evaporator coil since there is NO cabin filter to block the dirty nature from coming in through the fresh air vent
My 96 Tacoma is the same truck but its white, same engine and i only have 188k miles on it. I take very good care of it , especially when these trucks are going up in value. I feel lucky I got one under 200k. The V6 5vze is a really great motor and has plenty of power
I have a 2002 Hilux with 240k kilometers or 150k miles but I don't think the distance traveled is an issue, it's how well the vehicle is maintained and the desirability and value these older Japanese trucks are getting.
It's comforting to know that your beautiful truck is in the BEST HANDS with AMD. I live in the Boston area I wish he was closer to me. He is a blessing.
All I can say is WOW, I just love seeing old Tacomas like this because the owner takes care of it just like I would and that is NOT a very common thing, When it comes to my vehicle, I treat it as if it was my baby and nothing is too good for my baby. When I see the way some people treat their vehicles and how they abuse them, it just makes me cringe so to see someone like Jeff treat his vehicle the way I would, with love and care, it just brings a smile to my face. Thanks for showing this beautiful truck on this video, it truly is a gem.
Good to see that Jeff was able to keep his vehicle in great shape. Always love to see vehicles that no matter what age you always take great pride in the repairs. Loved watching this video. Paul

The only thing I could not do was the timing belt and water pump. I've done all fluids as well. And of course multiple exterior door handles!!
I bought a 96 Tacoma extracab 4x4 manual with the 2.7 4 cylinder brand new. It was black with a gold stripe in the same pattern. I loved that truck. This was an enjoyable trip down memory lane.
I love your videos. So earnest and different from most auto content on RUclips. I’m looking at buying a ‘97 Tacoma this week, I hope I win the auction!
This video brings back a lot of great memories. My first vehicle I bought after I graduated high school was a 2000 Tacoma that was essentially a three year new version of this vehicle in this video. I drove that truck for 18 years and I miss it all the time. I didn’t get to 340,000 miles but I came pretty close I almost got to 300,000 but some bimbo pulled Out in front of me and killed my truck. I bought a 2021 tundra after that.
It's great you took the time to display a fella who really keeps a car. I'm the same way, I collect up all the parts for each project before booking it in. I'm a programmer not a mech so all I do is clean & care. Toyota Land Cruiser UZJ-100R - GNANKQ May/2004 - 2UZ-FE - 396,000 kms, they imported these down under as a Kakadu, about 800 of them, so not many left these days. Love the 2UZ-FE & the auto trans, it's a daily drive. Love your work. Cheers.
Yes, I would be interested in his maintenance, the parts he bought for future maintenance, where he bought them and how did he determine which parts to purchase in advance. Thank you for this interesting story and caring for this gorgeous truck.
I still have my 1999 Tacoma single cab 4wd that I bought new. It's never been used for anything other than the occasional home depot run and a few weekly errands. It's the base model 2.7L in 056 natural white with no power options. It's never been driven off road or in the rain and always garaged. A true time capsule that gets a crazy amount of attention whenever I take it out. My daily driver is a 2003 corolla with nearly 350K trouble free miles.
The guy drove all the way from Omaha to Chicago to get his truck done? WOW That is beautiful. My first new truck was a 1990 Toyota. They weren't called Tacoma's then.

My old '96 4x4 V6 SR5 T100 is under new management and still rolling down the road with about 350,000 miles, and it is almost as clean as that fantastic '97 Tacoma.

Great trucks. Keep it up. I have a 97 Tacoma as well, but 4 cylinders 2.4L manuel transmission. The truck currently has 413,145 miles with original engine and transmission. Things i have replaced so far include the starter, fuel injector, alternator, and radiator due to a small leak and regular maintenance such as oil changes every 5k.
My 97 Tacoma has 215,789 miles on it and I can't kill it if I tried, automatic transmission and a 2.4 liter 4 cyl engine. Remarkable over engineering in the 1990's from Toyota and Honda. Also have a 99 civic LX 5-speed with 411,543 miles on it.
I bought an absolutely immaculate 1997 Tacoma from an old retired guy in 2003 for $5000 cash. It was a 4x4 and he was having trouble getting in and out of it because of his age. It was a single cab, 4 cylinder, automatic. It had 98k on the odometer and was absolutely spotless inside and out. It was a beautiful dark green with tan interior. I drove it for a couple years and then sold it for $7500 when I was in a tight spot and needed some quick cash. My current daily driver is a white on gray 2020 Tacoma V6 4x4 SR with the SX package. It’s an awesome truck, but I still miss that 97 so bad!
I have a 1996 SR5 that looks exactly like this one with 357,000 miles on it. Original engine and transmission with no issues whatsoever. My dad purchased it new and now it’s mine. Best truck ever.

I test drove a Toyota Certified '97 V6 SR5 just like this back in '98. I remember how special that truck felt. Noticeably nicer feel than the '97 4-banger I eventually bought. I can understand why the owner likes this truck so much.
Great video- my 2017 has 120k and I keep it well maintained, suspension lifted and all- yes, some parts wear out, but minuscule stuff- it gives me hope at today’s truck prices it needs to last

That’s a neat little story. Enjoy your beautiful truck.
Which parts do you collect and how do we determine what parts to collect for future maintenance. Thank you. They are beautiful trucks.
what part of Missouri? i have family in the central part and go to KCMO StJoe Hannibal and St Louis often in this Tacoma pickUp
It’s crazy to say that in 15k dollars 1991 money it would be like 31k or more today. You can’t even get a basic Tacoma for that price anymore.
What a gorgeous specimen of a late 90's Tacoma. Thank you Jeff for taking such good care of your truck. Here's to another 341,000 miles!
My 03 Tundra has this same engine. 360000 miles, runs perfect. The tacoma in this video is unbelievable!!!!
The previous owner of my 97 4Runner had a crack develop in the cylinder head at 279k, but it's a 3RZ, you had the 5VZ.
THIS is why I bought a 2022 Tacoma! I thoroughly enjoy taking care of my vehicles and this is my goal.
Same, purchased a 23 and plan to keep it forever. Have a 96 over had since new with 330k on her
This owner seems to be very meticulous with his truck and it shows alot here in this video. Simple and very clean! I truely appreciate this!
Very impressive.
my long-winded story about the rusty issues... i had no clue about the issue until about 2o11 from a chatroom with a guy from Indiana with a Taco with frame issues, so i went to my local Toyota dealer and They Had No Clue about this issue then, they were VERY ill informed from Toyota.... it was another 7 or so years before i found a Tacoma forum that showed pictures from roached frames, mostly from the northeast area where the salt is thick heavy and constantly applied to the roadways and it startled me very much how bad it could get
Good maintenance routine always the key
I bought a 1999 tacoma new. 2.7L 4x4 manual. I put 206,000 miles on it and sold it in 2010. Lots of highway driving. Didn't have any problems mechanically until it had over 100,000 miles. Was a great truck. I miss it now.
I bought my 1999 Tacoma with 2.7 manual in 2010 with exact same miles. I still have it and it has 262000 miles now. I wonder if I bought your Tacoma. It is a single cab red in color.
@@fubarinwar it was extended cab. Sold to a guy in Louisville Kentucky. No idea what he did with the truck. Never saw it again.
My 2015 TACO has 260k on it. Still runs great.... The only thing I've replaced was my CV axles and the fuel pump.
I had 4 of them and still have a ‘93 SR5 as a daily driver (and it has the 3.0, not a 3.4 swap!)
yes, in 1998 Toyota got all weird with no more high-centered cup holder by the middle vents and put them in the console by the shifter
@@subtegral i hear ya!!
Thanks, man!
how do you battle the winter salt monster?
NiCE!
Turns out the absolute coldest R134a AC can blow is 44°F. And that's as cold as mine ever gets (by vent thermometer)
@@subtegral mine does not blow out anywhere near that cold anymore, it used to LOL ... i think i have a dirty evaporator coil since there is NO cabin filter to block the dirty nature from coming in through the fresh air vent
@@JAY-97-97R134a might be able to blow colder down to 35°F
I am not sure. I thought I was sure, until I realized nobody is sure.
"He speaks my language."
Not many speak that language. Beautifully maintained. So kudos to the owner and yourself.
I love that language..
Take care of your equipment and it'll take care of you. This truck is an testament to that
It's comforting to know that your beautiful truck is in the BEST HANDS with AMD. I live in the Boston area I wish he was closer to me. He is a blessing.
Beautiful vehicle- a testimony to an owner who knows what he has. Well done Jeff.
Nice to see that you give the owner back the replaced parts. I always as my dealer service and they never do.
most states afaik have a LAW that you are entitled to receive back the old parts
Good to see that Jeff was able to keep his vehicle in great shape. Always love to see vehicles that no matter what age you always take great pride in the repairs. Loved watching this video. Paul
That Tacoma is gorgeous simple no frills pickup truck great bed length too. I wish I could bring my 04 Tundra to you I think you’d be impressed with how minty it is!
This is taking me down memory lane. I had a '98 Tacoma, SR5 4WD extended cab. Loved and miss that truck!
I have a 2003 Tacoma prerunner 2wd 3.4L v6 automatic 5vz-fe with 230k. I have done all the suspension work on it as well as new radiator. New front brakes and rotor, brake fluid service. The only thing I could not do was the timing belt and water pump. I've done all fluids as well. And of course multiple exterior door handles!!
This was a true treasure to watch. Thank you Jeff and thanks AMD for walking us through this amazing piece of Toyota heritage.
Hell yeah my 97 Tacoma have 400,000 and she still runs great

This video brings back a lot of great memories. My first vehicle I bought after I graduated high school was a 2000 Tacoma that was essentially a three year new version of this vehicle in this video. I drove that truck for 18 years and I miss it all the time. I didn’t get to 340,000 miles but I came pretty close I almost got to 300,000 but some bimbo pulled Out in front of me and killed my truck.
I bought a 2021 tundra after that.

Peak Tacoma! I bought new regular cab 91 "Tacoma" right out of high school for $14,300. Plowed snow with it for years. Best little trucks ever built
Very well maintained Tacoma. Impressive.
Cheers.
The owner of this truck deserves respect. What a great RUclips channel they could create!!! Thanks for your videos.
Yes, I would be interested in his maintenance, the parts he bought for future maintenance, where he bought them and how did he determine which parts to purchase in advance. Thank you for this interesting story and caring for this gorgeous truck.
I have a 2003 Toyota Tundra V8 with 235K miles. Still fun to drive and still going strong. She’s a keeper
Sounds wonderful, but the rain isn't acid, so not driving it when it's raining is really just .... kind of .... too .... weird.
