To reach the wires which provide access to the CAN, thieves have to pry back or remove trim pieces on the vehicle, including the front or rear bumper covers.

In Florida in the 2000's we always installed a removable steering wheel that you can put a bag and carry into the store with you. No one can steal a car with no steering wheel on it.
Apparently the new Rav4 hybrids/PHEV are not susceptible to this can bus attack, also as mentioned Toyota are retro fitting Rav4s with a metal, plate in the wheel arch. Personally I'd get a Ghost 2 system installed, unbeatable at this moment in time. Physical security may slow them down a bit, steering lock & pedal locks may help. Also as the can bus is on the left hand side, those of us with right hand drive can park close to a wall or similar will again make the thief's life harder.

My sister in law got her car stolen last night (on Christmas) and they're a 5 hour drive away and they have a 2 month old. RAV4 do have a high theft rate and newer models probably get driven straight to a container to be sold on some black market. The cop said they get 3 calls a week for car theft in the area. Thieves are quick and have the tech to hack your car in a minute. Get a steering wheel lock, key entry only and GPS tracker- I would not recommend a kill switch.
So sorry to hear this news. It's not until you have your car stolen do we start watching this sort of footage unfortunately. If I had known all the of the risks I would have purchased a steering lock and Tracker. If its not to late take a drive around the neighbourhood and see if the thieves have parked it in a nearby street. They occasionally do this to check if you have a tracker on your car.

My Toyota 2022 Rav4 Dynamic was stolen last week in the same manner. Absolutely terrible Toyota are not doing more to warn their customers of this serious security vulnerability. Did you manage to track the vehicle using the mobile app? Were the police helpful too? Mine was stolen in Stratford, London.
I am sorry to hear that you have experienced the same violation of having your car stolen. Yes Toyota should do more to protect their customers and at the very least give them a warning and possible solutions to this security vulnerability. No is the answer to tracking the vehicle and no to the police being helpful. This is certainly not just a Toyota problem but more to the point it's a keyless entry problem. I am a lot more cautious with regards to security now days.

The wonderful, wonderful world of plastic! Sick of the whole dam bumper being made out of cheap shit plastic with cheap shit plastic pins holding it in place! Frustrating how many car brands dodged good steal for the quality of plastic in the name of better gas millage, but in reality so they can save a few dollars in cost. Plus plastic molds are easier to make and after a bit of use or having to replace your fucking headlight assemblies you have to remove the plastic bumper and when you do that in many cases the shit plastic breaks and putting the bumper back on tends to not go on so well and than it's off buying a new bumper, always replacing the cheap plastic pins that never come out right so you have to break them and go pay 10 bucks a piece to replace, the bumpers aren't a huge expense, but getting them pro painted and matching the exact color paint because Toyota keeps changing the fucking color to weird random shit that makes it a huge pain in the ass to color match, which costs more money. I see far too many cars nowadays going down the road with plastic bumpers just dangling down and out of place. Never use to see that on a good steel bumper back in the day. Even the inside of my Camry with all the plastic molding all over the place, Toyota is too fucking cheap to make that color the same color all the way through the plastic. Other car brands have been doing the same crap for years too. Why make not just make them the color all the way through and not a cheap paint job that will fade in a few years of rubbing. I have freaking RC cars and even drones where the plastic is different colors and that is the same color all the way through the plastic material and is not a cheap ass paint job! Sorry, this kind of short cutting on quality parts to make cars have all these different designs in the name of looks can still look amazing being made of quality materials. I totally get plastic in some area, but this shit has just gone way overboard! I absolutely love, Toyota but take a little pride in the quality of the vehicle and get rid of this plastic junk where it doesn't need to be! If you're going to make insides different colors, don't just paint them, freaking infuse the color all the way though or just keep it black so fading doesn't become a future issue.

And if you can, stick to older vehicles with physical, metal ignition keys - you can still get nice VWs, Nissan, Subarus, GM and others from 2018 or so thus equipped. This will decrease the odds of your car being stolen. Bonus points if you drive a manual transmission. For example, no one in Africa wants your 2017 Mitsubishi Outlander with 2wd and manual shift.

This could literally happen to any car with keyless entry and start. Crooks just use a relay device that mimics the key fob when it picks up its signal. So now the car thinks that device is the actual key.
You don’t really don’t unless automakers redesign it. You can get a viper alarm because that will prevent them starting the car once they get in. Or just use a steering wheel club as was suggested, just remember to put it on
@@fkingmelt350- Ghost doesn't stop them damaging the vehicle & gaining access to it - it just stops them driving away IF it has been fitted correctly as immobilising the push to start button circuit on a Toyota / Lexus hybrid won't stop a CAN invader theft. An aftermarket alarm & immobiliser upgrade is a much better option as it will warn away / trigger as soon as the thieves attempt to access the wiring.

An old school hidden kill switch is a good place to start. There are quite a few systems that can be disabled just by using a low tech kill switch.

They can easily bite a steering wheel, because it made of soft metall for safety reasons.

I was told by the police it's more likely to go to a "chop shop" to be broken up for parts which are sent to other countries

All that's needed is an OBD2 port. Invest in an OBD2 port blocker, and trust me they are screwed

This could literally happen to any car with keyless entry and start. Crooks just use a relay device that mimics the key fob when it picks up its signal. So now the car thinks that device is the actual key.
This is a canbus attack not a relay attack
40-50k for a car and they can steal it easier thanks to the tech imolemented in cars nowadays😂

You don’t really don’t unless automakers redesign it. You can get a viper alarm because that will prevent them starting the car once they get in. Or just use a steering wheel club as was suggested, just remember to put it on
@@fkingmelt350- Ghost doesn't stop them damaging the vehicle & gaining access to it - it just stops them driving away IF it has been fitted correctly as immobilising the push to start button circuit on a Toyota / Lexus hybrid won't stop a CAN invader theft. An aftermarket alarm & immobiliser upgrade is a much better option as it will warn away / trigger as soon as the thieves attempt to access the wiring.
