I work at a brokerage in tx and one thing I can tell you is that you have to read the rate con. They are not all the same. Also if you book loads closer to the end of the day the broker is more likely to move on the rate because they need the load moved.
Its not just where the load is picking up, but also where it is going. Thats what determines the rate. Been doing this 25 years and i can tell you this, dont always look at the rate. Look where its going. What terrain you have to drive through to get it there. All that matters. Good video though. Like watching you young guys trying to figure it out lol
Yes 100% agree. That's what I was getting at by saying establish 3-5 routes you will want to run but I could've clarified the variables a bit more. Thank you Chris!
It’s always a pleasure listening to knowledge that no one speaks about and your right it makes sense wow 25 years and much more to go thanks for that knowledge sir🙏🏾
EDIT: $5,000 NET per week not GROSS. The gross is around $7,000 - $8,000. Sorry for the confusion guys, can’t believe I got that mixed up when recording this video! 😅
Is that dispatching only? Or did I see you have employed drivers? If dispatching only- How many trucks would you cover for that kind of money and at what percent?
As a former accountant and financial system consultant, now starting a box truck business, you truly offer a great financial perspective on this business. This is one of the best videos on the topic, great job, and this coming from a former financial professional. Great job.
Hi Skipper Andy, I am also a former accountant and financial System analyst. I am looking to become a truck driver because I hate corporate politics. How has your experience been in the box truck business?
I’m gonna be buying a truck with my son in the next couple months when I move back out side of Nashville Tennessee and this has been super helpful thank you so much you’re the only person that I’m subscribed to now!! Don’t wanna miss any helpful information thanks again😁

As a new carrier coming into this game I would like to say “Thank you”!! You just dropped some HUGE nuggets in my opinion!!! I’m very glad I ran across this video. And yes I subscribed!! Definitely will be fine toothing your library! Again thank you sir!!
My cpm is under $1 that’s the beauty of older paid for truck. Even when I get my own trailer it should stay under it, however when I add the 60cpm for myself so I’m at $1.60 so anything over it from my 100k miles I drive is adding on top from $60k a year. I’m in Midwest so I have a great market imo, owned my truck for 5 months total miles so far has been easily over $3.5 round trip, I think main issue for most people is overhead and they dig themselves in debt so they end up running cheap crap cause they’re forced to. If I go to area there’s no loads I just go home. Main advice I’d say is build good relationships with brokers, even when loads are dry those brokers will give you a rate well above what they have posted.
Solid video, clean sound, and professional advice- rare for this subject matter. Look forward to the next one. Would love some more deep dives into the spot rate and lane avg rpm tools on DAT

I appreciate it Raven! The main goal is to help everyone that watches my channel become successful. I truly believe I can coach ANYONE in the trucking industry to 6-7 figures in a year but i can’t teach everyone 1 on 1 AND run my own company. So i just make videos every now and again to help people as many people as i can for free!
5k is on the lower spectrum of the earning curve. Coming from a place of experience, the market fluctuates and changes all the time. Currently as I'm leaving a comment, Atlanta isn't in a great shape and I wouldn't consider running around that area with it as your main hub. With time even if you drive all over the US, you will learn that there are several hot spots for every type of equipment and if you plan your routes accordingly to arrive in those hot spots once a week or so, you could be making double of what is talked about in the video.
Yeah I wholeheartedly agree. I don’t ever want to exaggerate numbers and give people false hope because there’s a lot of that going around in the industry. I think I left out the part where I said you can make $5K if you drive regional/local only, you’re home 3 days a week, and you only do dry van loads which is not bad at all.
Congratulations! You're the first trucker/business person in the trucking industry that I've come across on RUclips that gets that they need to pay themselves; and that it's an expense that is included in their breakeven number. I would disagree with the 50k amount and make it at least 75K. Walmart drivers are making 100k a year and they aren't running a business. Actually, you should add burdened labor to include medical, dental, 401k and PTO. And, after run this exercise, you'll soon discover you can't get loads that pay enough and you really can't make a decent profit being in the trucking industry. You need to negotiate directly with the shippers to even have a shot at it. 😊
Straight to the point guy. I like it..Looking to start my own business soon by renting..Do researching before I do and I think youre the perfect guy I came across the many other videos ive seen
Thanks man I really appreciate that! That’s the whole goal with this channel. Help truckers all over the world with straight to the point and effective advice!
Your videos are filled with great tips and information. I am just starting out and appreciate you taking the time to make these videos, they really help. Thank you.
i like the idea of negotiating I like the tools very beginner friendly, I myself am a master negotiator but you gave good pointers I suppose on the industry and that deserves a like in my opinion
It’s interesting watching this from a broker perspective. I typically don’t have issues with drivers because I pay well above spot market. Good to know carrier to broker negotiation are very similar to broker customer
Brokers serve a very important role in the industry so hopefully you didn’t see this video in a negative light! Just want to help the uniformed become more… informed
Would you be able to dispatch a 26' box truck from San Antonio to Houston, or Laredo, or Corpus Christi, or Dallas/Ft Worth, or El Paso and Midland/Odessa and back with a load both ways always ending in San Antonio? Would a Semi with a dryvan be easier?
I am a dispatcher/freight specialist looking to be in business with brokers and is seeking owner operators to provide the best loads for every driver that works with me... No Contracts‼️ No Force Dispatching‼️

Really glad to hear that! I just came back from a mini vacation in Vegas... I can't believe you locals can survive in that type of heat! Awesome information and very good delivery. Thank you so much, you have provided an incredible amount of information! I'm just in the beginning stages of research to determine if at 65 I want to buy a cargo van and travel the country and mix work with camping.
If you’re familiar with an area that barely has loads coming out of it, that is a negotiating tool also. I’ve gone to Buffalo NY and there’s nothing coming out of there most of the time, so I tell the brokers, I’ll need a higher rate to cover expenses on the empty trip back.
There are multiple options depending on load and broker. Going to dead area, heavy load, spacial requirements, playing with time and mind of broker, hold techniques, extra DH miles, urgent or early pick ups... etc. But keep your target in mind before going on call.

Anyone has an authority over the brokers or they just can do whatever they want just because no one watching over them?
Could you please share a video to the new dispatchers like me teach us how we start the call with brokers and what shall we ask them about and what type of questions we shall ask them and what type of details we need to get and how to negotiate the rate? Thank you for this amazing channel!
@@Gill22 Yes please, I am at the transportation industry in my country from 2015 as a Trucking Coordinator, but I am a new as a dispatcher in the U.S. Industry, I am an English beginner speaker and I'm working on my self to practice my English, I just need some help to learn how can I start talk to the broker as a new dispatcher and how I don't get confused. Thank you so much for your time and effort to helping other people like me and share to us these huge information!
The most important thing to do is post your truck and where you want to go and your rate, then they are calling you you're negotiating from the power side instead of calling them up begging for loads.
Hi Darel! Yes you can! To find these loads just sign into DAT, click the search loads option, under "Truck" click "Only", and finally in the field next to it just type in "SB" which will give you option to select "Straight Box Truck". You can also specify the length of your truck as well. If you're having trouble following along, I made a video walking through how to book loads on DAT that you can watch as well. Hope this helps!
So if over time you are able to negotiate better rates, would that just be called learning the ropes/experience? How to apply good common sense to getting rates sooner than later? Like buying a used car, one needs to know when and how to negotiate but who does that regularly like getting(trying) to get loads a few times per week? But the price is everything while you have to manage your CPM for your base is predicated on the lanes you chose. And the steps need to be slow and deliberate. Good stuff here and I'm listening.
Thanks for the wonderful videos. Any information you can share with us on what to pay a driver but still make a profit yourself as the owner of the cargo van or box truck?
great info. i wonder how can i find clients as a dispatcher and are their companies that have clients that take a small fee off what i dispatch, like maybe 15% or companies that get a dispatcher clients ?
A big problem is that so many owner-operators are going so cheap on the rates. The shippers know the mistake they are making and capitalize on it. The operators will run their trucks into the ground and not have the cash reserves to repair them. They will go out of business, and the next operator can hop in and perpetuate the same mistake. So, for the smart operators out there they will have a hard time getting the proper pay because there's always going to be a lot of new operators unwittingly going too cheap and giving shippers a steal of a deal.
At the end of the day.. it depends on market.. the way the market is right now.. it’s easy to make up your numbers etc.. when market was low.. people were happy just to find a load.
I kind of agree. We’ve operated during tough markets as well but we’ve always maintained a very profitable business because we always knew our numbers. Your CPM is the basis of your business which every trucker should know. If you can’t find a way to make $1.80/mile, you won’t be in business for long. Any money you make past your CPM is profit and it becomes subjective on how to maximize it. I just included steps that i thought would help give truckers a smaller target to focus on such as include your desired salary per year as driver pay, look at historical rates over the past week, understanding leverage points in negotiations, etc. All these things will definitely help you make more money and have a better target to shoot for than just trying to make more than your CPM. Even during tough markets, this has been a winning strategy. I rather pick up less loads and make more money per load than pick up many loads for a lower rate!
@@Gill22 right.. like i said with a high market you can do whatever you want; yes even do “less loads.” When market is low… it’s whatever you can get just to get home. Even in difficult times I hear carriers speak with a big mouth about not hauling cheap loads.. but we all know better.
Hi! Love ur content man! Question. So ur netting 5k out of 7-8k gross. What's included in ur expenses (truck payments)?? What's your home time like? Your averaging 7k miles monthly? Are u dry van only? U own ur truck and trailer? Love ur videos bro, would appreciate any insights. Looking to buy a truck soon
Yes but don’t expect to net $5K if you’re just starting out. We have direct shipper loads that have increased in value over time. You might be grossing $5K if you’re just starting out but you can still net over $100K per year including ALL expenses not just truck payments.

Could you please share a video to the new dispatchers like me teach us how we start the call with brokers and what shall we ask them about and what type of questions we shall ask them and what type of details we need to get and how to negotiate the rate?

There’s a lot to cover there! I might make a video on it or just include it in a training 👌🏽

Great Tips, Good Stuff👍🏿😄
A great video 📹 , lot’s of lessons. I am happy you sharing your experiences. It helps a lot.
Thanks Gill22 ✅🔥
The most important thing to do is post your truck and where you want to go and your rate, then they are calling you you're negotiating from the power side instead of calling them up begging for loads.
100%! I hope more people see this because that’s very useful. They’re calling with last minute loads and they’re always willing to pay a lot
@@Gill22 Thanks for this advice! What boards are you posting your truck?
Thanks for this advice! What boards are you posting your truck?
Is there any better load boards for Canadian shipment other than loadlink? They are really overpriced
@Gill22 I'm in Atlanta, GA. Can I use the DAT board to find loads for 26' Box Trucks?
Watching Colby Pegway he claims sylectus load board is best the box truck
So if over time you are able to negotiate better rates, would that just be called learning the ropes/experience? How to apply good common sense to getting rates sooner than later? Like buying a used car, one needs to know when and how to negotiate but who does that regularly like getting(trying) to get loads a few times per week? But the price is everything while you have to manage your CPM for your base is predicated on the lanes you chose. And the steps need to be slow and deliberate. Good stuff here and I'm listening.
thanks for the gems of wisdom.
By clients do you mean owner operators or shippers? I'll be making a video regarding finding owner operators as a dispatcher soon!
Thanks for the content. 🔥
It’s up to the broker or lane, we can do cpm, brokers don’t give up crap on cpm
All these people need ratings and subscribers
Incredible info put incredibly 👍👍
A big problem is that so many owner-operators are going so cheap on the rates. The shippers know the mistake they are making and capitalize on it. The operators will run their trucks into the ground and not have the cash reserves to repair them. They will go out of business, and the next operator can hop in and perpetuate the same mistake. So, for the smart operators out there they will have a hard time getting the proper pay because there's always going to be a lot of new operators unwittingly going too cheap and giving shippers a steal of a deal.
my first week tracking ever I love it
u mean trucking? Doesn’t it get boring, or do u mean ur just dispatching?
Solid video man
Any tips for starting with DAT, do I have to own the truck, how to get good OO
Do you do Dispatch for sprinter vans and can I use a regular cargo van to move loads? Anyone can answere.
Great information partner.
Thanks brother great information!!
As a broker I now know what the trucks be doin. CNt wait to get em at their own game
Does your dispatching service include the western Canada market? Including box truck loads?
No unfortunately, just the US market for now.
Hello Gill
I'm interested in learning about Truck dispeching
