I remember years ago seeing a video interview with David where he talked about discovering Ronson when he was putting the Spiders together and he said when he heard him play "That's my Jeff Beck". If you don't know about Jeff Beck he's a legend and considered one of the best, so Bowie's comment was high praise. I have subbed by the way. Wish you would react to all of Davids albums from 1969 to 1981. He put out an incredible number of albums in those years. Constantly evolving and changing, but always incredibly good. That's why he earned the Nickname name "The Chameleon of Rock".
I have a hard time with the phrase"underrated", only because, if you get music, you don't underrate great music, maybe "unheralded"? Maybe that's just semantics. But to give another example, Jaco Pastorius is widely viewed as the greatest fretless bass player ever, but he isn't widely known, so he's not underrated, he's underknown, and I feel the same about Ronson ,and many other musicians.
This song is Ziggy's introduction on the record. The album starts off with a prophecy that the world will end in 5 years. Then, Ziggy shows up to save us and tells us exactly who he is. An androgynous reptilian rock star who comes from some Martian crater with pink monkey birds and appreciates the man love. I'm glad you're enjoying the songs from this record, because it really is a great introduction to his music. You honestly won't hear any of this on his other records, so it's not setting you up for everything else, but you'll always hear incredible songs no matter the album. Mick Ronson played an exceptional solo, and he arranged the strings and piano as well. Trevor Bolder and Mick Woodmansey held down that rhythm section well. The strange instrument halfway through was a pennywhistle, played by Bowie. You may be interested to know David also did his vocals in one take for this song, and most of the album. A lot of talent went into it, for sure!
This was Bowie's initial burst of creativity, where he changed characters with each tour. I hope you get to some tracks from the _Aladdin_ _Sane_ and _Diamond_ _Dogs_ albums. He then changed directions while cleaning up from a drug habit and eventual divorce, followed by some pop albums, then back to experimenting with new forms right up to his death. So much great material!
Imagine how I felt as a 1st grader hearing this for the first time in my Friday art class in late 1972. It blew my mind. I totally stopped. My little jaw dropped. That teacher introduced me to music I had never heard before like Bowie, the Who, The Modern Jazz Quartet, JS Bach and others. Thank God for her bringing in the record player and playing music as we did our little projects back then ❤.

Low would be a big departure from here or Station to Station. Diamond Dogs is an album close to my heart, but if you don't do the whole album,please consider Sweet Thing/ Candidate/ Sweet Thing reprise, it is a stunning moment. I'm glad you've started your Bowie with Ziggy! It's a great place to start. The albums that came before and after, 'Hunky Dory' and 'Aladdin Sane' are equally good. On Hunky Dory, he's becoming Ziggy and Aladdin Sane is 'Ziggy goes to America'. :)
So many great Bowie songs to discover. You’ll love the whole album but definitely try Rock n Roll Suicide then Aladdin Sane, Drive in Saturday for early highlights. Bowie began to change around Station to station, that album, Low and Heroes are widely considered his best.
There are several "best" albums to come I can assure you. The soul period, the Berlin trilogy, Scary Monsters, Some incredible stuff from the eighties (film songs, Duets, live stuff) the experimental nineties, the last burst of energy and then the final album. You are on an amazing journey. And remember you have started five albums in with Ziggy lol x
Check out the live version of this from the "Ziggy" film. Mick Ronson does an extended solo, and there's a great set piece of choreography between Ronson and Bowie...
I really don’t know if you’ll read this or not but, if you do. Search David Live at the Tower Theater Philadelphia. It’s from around 1975. Double album that covered Ziggy,Aladdin Sane, and Diamond Dogs songs. I think you would enjoy it. Let us know if you do……….someday
The Album which precedes Ziggy Stardust is called Hunky Dory, and is completely different but also one of his best. So many great songs. Very difficult to suggest one, but Life on Mars and Queen Bitch are a good start. There is a bit of a cross over between the albums as he was finishing Hunky Dory he started work on Ziggy Stardust. And the song Queen Bitch points to the new direction which was to be the Ziggy Stardust album. An amazing period of such creativity.
I love that you love this - I've been listening to it for years... there's so much Bowie to discover, like anything from the Space Oddity album..Also look out for 'Did You Ever Have a Dream' it's a fun early track, and so are 'Uncle Arthur' and 'She's Got Medals'

@@EwanReviews Absolutely! The greatest thing about each is the emotion behind them. David could really put his heart into his music, whether he was moving from folk to jazz. Everything in between is a wonderful surprise.
@@EwanReviews He also had a lot of observations about life. Alienation is a common theme of his music. A literal alien represents that in this case, but loneliness is there in every song. There can be a ton of layers, so they usually need more explanation, but every song is essentially Bowie communicating how important it is that everyone feels their existence matters. We're really not alone, and that will definitely hit you in the song Rock N' Roll Suicide. I've recommended the live version because I like the vocals more and you'll be able to see Ziggy's final performance before he was killed off and David moved on to the next character. It's absolutely the most important footage of the era, and the best live version of a song from the Ziggy Stardust record. I think you'll love it! ❤
@@EwanReviews Suede are heavily influenced by David Bowie, they have done some decent stuff but I would not regard them as essential listening. Far better to explore the music of Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground.
