The more you learn about Mick ‘Ronno’ Ronson, the more you’ll love him. His work on Lou Reed’s Transformer (strings, piano, guitar, arrangements…) is immense. Humble guy but amazing musician. Died in his 40s, early 90s. Last performance was with Bowie at the Freddie Mercury memorial concert - on YT of course! All the young dudes.
Of course you can't discount Ronno's lyrical and vocal foil, Ian Hunter. My fave of his collabs. Just check out, "The Truth, The Whole Truth, And Nothing But The Truth".
Moonage Daydream was almost like an anthem for a lot of us back then. It's hard to describe just how much it meant and how much we liked it and how cool it seemed. And so melodic, and fun to sing along with. On the first one, I don't know if you noticed but much of it was in a slow 7/4 meter. It wasn't uncommon for him to be sneaking progressive stuff in. I love these two as a combination though, because the first one keeps it slightly looser and more organic and then it goes from that oddball meter to a straight 4 with a heavy punch to start it off, and suddenly you're catapulted into this other world.
You're right bro. And it was a great combo, I agree! I really like doing two songs instead of just one. It gives you a yin and yang scenario some times if you're lucky 🙃

At some point, you need to watch the live Ziggy Concert Film. This concert has an amazing version of "Moonage Daydream", which really capturing the crazy energy shared between Bowie, his Audience, Mick Ronson and "The Spiders from Mars". Also the film has an amazing version of title song "Ziggy Stardust". And the closing performance of "Rock & Roll Suicide" captures the moment when Bowie announced to the World that he would no longer be performing Ziggy after this show. This was a shocking surprise announcement to his Band, who expected to continue touring "Ziggy" for years to come!
Yes, amazing film - also the incredible version of The Width of a Ciircle, to me one of the peaks of the entire show, poetic and vertiginous, sexy and surreal, all in one! Once again, the contribution of the entire band on that one (above all, Ronson) is killer stuff.

I felt the fight suggested growing tensions among the aliens in "The Spider From Mars", particularly whenever Ziggy wasn't there to keep an eye on them. For L33, I think the "Width" performance was a bit out of context at the time. Now the Reaction Group is a bit further into the Ziggy experience, and these LIVE performances will mean more. It's fun to re-explore this great music with new people who care!

Yes, it's one of the points where they really cut loose into open improvisation (Ronno's glorious solo earlier in the song too) but it works brilliantly. Thank god that they asked Pennebaker to "film a few tracks" and that he realized, on watching the first night gig, that "there was an entire film here crying out to be made". At the time it was VERY unusual to film an entire full-length gig with a rock band for cinema release. "Pink Floyd at Pompeii" wasn't filmed in front of an audience, it's more of a concert event than a real touring concert.

His first film was a doc about Dylan's tour in England, called "Don't Look Back", with a lot of great interactions and behind the scenes stuff. But there was no precedent for a "concert film", and most of Dylan's performances were limited to portions of each song. With Ziggy, Pennebaker showed complete performances with multi-camera, but also priceless glimpses of Bowie backstage, and the manic audience reactions too. Amazing!
Ziggy Stardust is one of the most satisfying records of all time. Not one skippable track imo. They're not his best songs, but as a full album it just makes you smile & helps to escape reality for a bit. Moonage Daydream always puts me in some type of trance that guitar is just beautiful. You should definitely check the live version out from the Ziggy Concert film. Can't wait to see what you think about the rest of the album 😊
DB is one of my all time favorite artists and this LP is one of his greatest achievements. I remember when it was first released. We were all blown away by the concept and non of us had ever heard anything like it. I’ve seen DB in concert over 20 times including his first show in New York City where he featured this album. He used the example he learned from The Beatles which was to never repeat himself. They didn’t call him The White Duke for nothing. RIP maestro. 🕊❤️🎼

That's Bowie himself playing saxophone on Soul Love, it was an instrument he learnt early on and he's always had a penchant for it. He did a cover of Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" in the eighties, where he'a also offering a nice rendition of the sax lines. I really like Soul Love, this gentle, funky r'n'b spng.

Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane - 3 in row from Bowie, same band (with your new favorite name!), same awesomeness. These are my favorite Bowie, although I own many more of his albums, these three get played the most!
Two great songs. "Soul Love" is incredibly underrated, in my opinion. It has a really quirky time signature, amazing lyrics and a sweeeeet saxophone solo. As for "Moonage Daydream", well, what can you say? The solo is the obvious highlight. It truly soars to the outer reaches of the universe, and yet, it never quite hits the highest notes it aims to reach. In a good way. Listening to it feels a bit like "pleasuring yourself" and then stopping when you're getting close. It's both immensely satisfying and extremely frustrating. And you're left with a feeling of "NEXT time we'll get there! Just one more listen!".
This is the album that made Bowie the biggest Super Star in Great Britain (later he would also conquer America).....he would also take ZiggyMania to the streets of many cities in the UK and Europe with multitudes of young people emulating the clothes. and Ziggy Stardust hairstyles

Bowie picked up some basic guitar and piano over the years of his time in bands but started out learning saxophone and didn't abandon it from his music. Re-visited it every so often too (ie. the horn-driven sound of Let's Dance LP in 1983). Hunky Dory was a breakthrough artistically the year before but Ziggy broke him through commercially, mainly in the UK where he had only had major success before with "Space Oddity" as a hit single in 1969. He frequently used sax in his records, which should have made it less of a surprise to people when he turned toward a more R&B sound in 1974-75. But some of his fans were turned off by the audial and visual transformation. The "Ziggy" incarnation was his most iconic look. But to me, his best musical incarnation was as the "Thin White Duke" from 1975-77. He may have been rail thin, pale and off his mind on coke for the majority of that period but my god was it amazing :D
I used to hate the sound of the saxophone... Then one day I heard David Bowie sing "Drive In Saturday" (on the 'Russell Harty Show' on the BBC) And... David played sax on it...and I completely changed my mind about that instrument there and then!! (I _still don't like_ "Trad Jazz") But I love to hear David Bowie - and others who play sax like him - play sax... He changed my musical world. He was truly a musical magician, imo. I _really do like_ this _entire_ album.❤

Hope you will get to the Title track "Aladdin Sane" that features the absolute best piano solo in rock music by Mike Garson. It leaves the song, takes flight and then returns to the song. It is amazing.
I bought this album, with my own money, the week it came out, after listening to a couple of tracks in a record booth, with my girl friend... still a favourite, though, not one of Bowie's, at least at the time - he seemed to drop it like a hot rock asap - and killed the band... He did go on to more and very different stuff - but, for me, it started here and, though I learned to love the albums that went before, and enjoyed much of what came after, this album encapsulates 'Bowie' - the fact that he gave tracks away from it, to other bands - the fact that he went on to 'perform' Ziggy - then broke up the band...
Oh, hell to the yes.....bowie is one of the very most epic rabbit holes in rock....he was really good friends with john & paul too, once he got some serious clout & fame...there are many awesome stories, him & john were especially good friends....anyway, damn, i have too many suggetions, this is gonna have to simmer in my brain a bit. Lol.
Do yourself a real favor. When you have time make sure you kick back and listen entirely in one listen. Headphones if they are better than your system and if you partake, all the better. Part of the genius of the top concept albums is the flow. This is one of the very best.
People react to Ziggy and I'm always afraid they'll skip "Rock and Roll Suicide". It's the end of the album and go ahead and look it up, it's often neglected. It's the song that got me and my friends crawling out our windows or sneaking out one way or another, getting together and talking about music that resonated with all of us. Don't get me wrong, the rest of the album is amazing but that was the one that made us feel happy to be who we were.
It might not be your bag but you should check out a few interviews that Bowie did. He was truly ahead of the curve... His prediction of the rise of the internet with Jeremy Paxman and one he did for MTV (can't remember the dudes name.) There will never be another like him.

Bowie exploited the gender ambiguity spirit of the age although there was nothing organic or spontaneous about it. It was a Tavistock initiative to sow societal chaos at a very fundamental level. But Bowie played it to perfection although by most accounts he was a straight shooter. Ian Hunter of Mott the Hoople, who Bowie rescued from obscurity, put it thusly: "David wasn't no fairy!" Look Back In Anger (official video) would be a great one - some of his best vocals ever and the video is interesting too.
Heroes, Let's Dance, and China Girl are Bowie songs to hear. Heroes sung by Bowie in German makes the perfect ending to the Jojo Rabbit movie.

He frequently used sax in his records, which should have made it less of a surprise to people when he turned toward a more R&B sound in 1974-75. But some of his fans were turned off by the audial and visual transformation. The "Ziggy" incarnation was his most iconic look. But to me, his best musical incarnation was as the "Thin White Duke" from 1975-77. He may have been rail thin, pale and off his mind on coke for the majority of that period but my god was it amazing :D

(on the 'Russell Harty Show' on the BBC) And... David played sax on it...and I completely changed my mind about that instrument there and then!! (I _still don't like_ "Trad Jazz")
But I love to hear David Bowie - and others who play sax like him - play sax...
He changed my musical world.

This album reminds me of being 17, and I'm still liking it, I saw him a couple of years after this, same band did some of these tracks.

Off course the 1973 live version of Moonage Daydream with Mick Ronsons is a must watch, but I absolutely love this version from 2002 with Earl Slick (lead guitar on the Station to Station album) and Mike Garson (who played at that 1973 show as well). Bowie is really having fun with

Hope you will get to the Title track "Aladdin Sane" that features the absolute best piano solo in rock music by Mike Garson. It leaves the song, takes flight and then returns to the song. It is amazing.

I bought this album, with my own money, the week it came out, after listening to a couple of tracks in a record booth, with my girl friend... still a favourite, though, not one of Bowie's, at least at the time - he seemed to drop it like a hot rock asap - and killed the band... He did go on to more and very different stuff - but, for me, it started here and, though I learned to love the albums that went before, and enjoyed much of what came after, this album encapsulates 'Bowie' - the fact that he gave tracks away from it, to other bands - the fact that he went on to 'perform' Ziggy - then broke up the band...

Oh, hell to the yes.....bowie is one of the very most epic rabbit holes in rock....he was really good friends with john & paul too, once he got some serious clout & fame...there are many awesome stories, him & john were especially good friends....anyway, damn, i have too many suggetions, this is gonna have to simmer in my brain a bit. Lol.
Do yourself a real favor. When you have time make sure you kick back and listen entirely in one listen. Headphones if they are better than your system and if you partake, all the better. Part of the genius of the top concept albums is the flow. This is one of the very best.

People react to Ziggy and I'm always afraid they'll skip "Rock and Roll Suicide". It's the end of the album and go ahead and look it up, it's often neglected. It's the song that got me and my friends crawling out our windows or sneaking out one way or another, getting together and talking about music that resonated with all of us. Don't get me wrong, the rest of the album is amazing but that was the one that made us feel happy to be who we were.
It might not be your bag but you should check out a few interviews that Bowie did. He was truly ahead of the curve... His prediction of the rise of the internet with Jeremy Paxman and one he did for MTV (can't remember the dudes name.) There will never be another like him.

Bowie exploited the gender ambiguity spirit of the age although there was nothing organic or spontaneous about it. It was a Tavistock initiative to sow societal chaos at a very fundamental level. But Bowie played it to perfection although by most accounts he was a straight shooter. Ian Hunter of Mott the Hoople, who Bowie rescued from obscurity, put it thusly: "David wasn't no fairy!"
