The little plane printed on the box is not just cosmetics, you can actually play it in a plane. I have a friend that played it on a flight to Florida, using the silencers of course.
Hey David, great review -- I met Karl quite a number of years ago at a homeschooling convention here in Massachusetts, and have one of his early wooden Mountain Ocarinas made with phenolic resin and red oak, as well as a couple of the newer plastic Mountain Ocarinas. I remember Karl talking about his ideas for a two-octave Ocarina many years ago, and am totally thrilled to reconnect with him and finally get my hands on "the dream ocarina"!
Good review, David! My own judgment is that the time of Coda is somewhere between the mountain ocarina and a typical Asian ocarina, in terms of "purity." I think it definitely has less "buzz" than the MOs had, but you're correct to point out that the sound of Coda does have a bit of texture. Playing Coda and MO back to back makes the difference very striking. Another thing to mention is that the voicing is on the bottom, and it's fairly easy to use Fipple bend to get notes below C5. B and Bb are no sweat at all. Low A takes some practice. I'm glad you took time to explain the chamber overlap. This may be confusing to the beginner but it's an extremely powerful feature when you've learned how to use it.
I kind of wish they continued to make their old Mountain Ocarinas along with this. I never had a chance to grab one before they were discontinued. But this is an incredible instrument, and I'll have to try and pick one up someday
I’ve always wanted a mountain ocarina back in the day but I was a kid when you reviewed it back then, maybe now that I’m an adult with adult money I can get this
Dude I was like 12 when I first saw this guy and this is such a trip that he's still here doing the same stuff. I even got myself an ocarina because of this guy playing his and his tutorial series made me really want one. I'm 24 now and still suck at my ocarina, but maybe I'll pick it back up and force myself to learn again
I followed Karl's Coda-creation journey on the forums for a thousand years... Eagerly awaiting the day the Coda would finally leap from Karl's brain into my hand... So when I saw they were finally for sale, I bought TWO, even though like most people I only have one mouth. The Coda is a masterpiece of engineering and vision. I mean, when I realized the Coda had you finger two chambers at the same time, I was like, SHUT THE FRONT DOOR, then I was like, MAKE SURE THE BACK DOOR'S SHUT, TOO. The Coda is like nothing else out there. Thanks for the review, David 👍 And if you happen to read this, Karl, WASSUP
Hi David! I watched your videos a long time ago (about 2007-2008) and you inspired me to pick up my first pendant ocarina! I had put it aside for a long time, as I found the range was too limited to play a lot of my favorite songs. Fast forward 15 years, and I found your Coda EDC review while looking to pick up an instrument again. I'm amazed at Karl's ingenuity with such a compact double chamber, and the mutes REALLY make it an EDC instrument to me. Thanks to this review, I rediscovered your channel and my love of ocarinas! I have gotten a Focalink Osawa-i AC and am eagerly awaiting the Coda EDC to be back in stock on Amazon.
After seeing the CODA and its Compact size. I am a Recorder Player, and new to Ocarina playing. But the CODA Makes sense for me. I cant wait to receive my CODA and start getting used to it's Personality.
Thanks for the review! I got my C and G MOs over a decade ago and really liked the ergonomics of the inline design. Back then there were talks about a two-octave ocarina in their forum; it's nice to see that Karl's project has finally come into being
i have noodled around with recorder an penny whistles , havent played for several years picked this for c- mass 21 will be fun , first ocarina like device , so new adventure wish me luck
Thanks for posting a review about the Coda! I agree with the bit of a learning curve with the fingerings. I love taking mine backpacking, and more often than not, it's just thrown in my purse on the go. The silencers were a HUGE help when learning to play. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS!
This is great! I'm really glad you covered this, because I wouldn't have known about it otherwise. I was too young to buy my own stuff when Mountain Ocarinas were a thing, but this is kind of better in some ways! Been a docjazz subscriber since way back. Keep on tootin,' brother; your videos are a treasure.
watching davids old videos and watching his new ones, i love how much more comfortable he is on camera. i notice him talking with his hands much more now than he used to
this is awesome! And is definitely an ocarina. By an acoustic engineering perspective. Yes, this is undoubtedly an Ocarina since you don't have a overtone range reached by overblowing and that you have to use a secondary chamber. The fingering actually has nothing to do with ocarinas specifically. And this concept of using two chambers for the same finger positions is also found in a new model from China. Compact, looks great, great tone. I'm getting this later down the road xD. And those silencers..... that is an awesome idea!
There’s actually a method I use when practicing on an ocarina. I blow really soft and quietly, it makes the ocarina sound like a little quiet baby ocarina. It works suprisingly well.
I ordered one of these last night because of this video. It shipped this morning! Can't wait to start practicing. I like the intuitive fingering patterns (subjective, I know).
I just got it in the mail and for anyone curious, regardless of how it works internally it is an ocarina. And of all my wind instruments this is now one of my favorites
Thanks for the review. I've been playing the Mountain Ocarinas since 2002 or so and I own 4 of them. The Coda sounds very similar and addresses the limitations of those instruments. I'll be purchasing a Coda very soon!
Great review! I had been on the fence about adding one of these to my collection of whistles and ocarinas but was really intrigued by it's possibilities. Am more comfortable with my abilities on whistle and recorder and think this would be an easy transition. Like you, I think this would be a great take along EDC for it's ruggedness and size. Thanks for your honest and complete assessment. Like the clip option but think I would add a short lanyard with a small snap clip to secure it to a strap, belt or 'D' ring while traveling about on foot.
I finally saved enough money to buy one! I've also ordered a Night by Noble to further practice with an actual ocarina! My first instrument was a flute so I'm very excited for it to arrive. :D
You know, the dual chamber is really great, I thought this one high note in zeldas lullaby was not sounding good, but I played that single note in the second chamber and it crisped it up and REALLY completed the feel, so playing songs with both really feels good
Very nice review David. When I first got this Ocarina/Flute I struggled a little bit because I was used to my triple ocarina and the Mountain Inline Ocarinas. So I started keeping an on line journal over on the Coda EDC website forum per Karls encouragement to do so. It’s been fun and I hope helpful to people learning how to play this wonderful instrument. Then I thought this would be something I would love to see you do David. I don’t know if you would be interested or not but I think it would be cool.🙂🧐😎🙏👍
I'm still working on getting better on my CODA. The upper chamber is easier for me than the lower chamber. I love how I can play certain songs (like Zelda's lullaby) without having to drop those higher notes down an octave. And since it's an EDC, it's in its little pouch in my purse.👍🏻😉
Thanks David. I have been a fan for years. My hands are arthritic now and I can't play the large ocarinas. I can still play my original 4 hole ocarinas and I am sure that I can play the Coda EDC flute.
Question. I just bought my coat at EDC Ocarina today. Eventually even after clearing the moisture out by blowing or sucking, there’s got to be some kind of mild bacteria or odor How do you clean the inside thoroughly. To make it like new.
It’s plastic, so You can soak it in soapy dish water then rinse thoroughly, or even put it in the dishwasher! Then I would put it in an open, dry space to make sure it dries thoroughly.
It seems like it's very similar to the STL max range double English pendant. Being plastic, it seems to have a similar tonality to a recorder, with added difficulty in transitioning between chambers.
This is an amazing instrument. The idea of an ocarina within an ocarina is amazing. The sound is really nice. I don't care for the look of it, though. It looks very boxy. Yet, I would consider buying it. The silencers are amazing. I often wonder what my neighbors are thinking while I practice. LOL Beside this flute, panpipes are the only flute instrument that I know of that one can play silently. You just blow a breathy sound across the tubes. Thank you, David.
My wife plays pennywhistle and this looks like something she would also enjoy. I'm impressed with how sweetly you play those higher notes! My question is whether one can play fast and dancy (120 bpm) reels and jigs on this type of instrument? Thanks for a very informative review!
The covering holes for the higher notes makes an instinctive sense for me, but I think that's from playing the clarinet. Once you hit the top note on the lower set of notes, you hit the octave key and start at the bottom again. So I mean, it seems reasonable to me.
Hi! Thank you for the awesome review. I'm really interested in this ocarina! I didn't even know about it till now. Can I make a request? Could you cover Poor Wayfaring Stranger from the movie 1917? I think you would make it sound amazing!
Plastic soprano recorder can be just as portable with the same range with none of the hassle of a second chamber. It can be broken up into three sections for compact transport. Maybe if it had a pure tone it would be worth it.
Very clever--the versatility and familiarity of a 12 hole system, but the range and octaves of a double pendant style. I came from flute, sax, and clarinet so I could never get the hang of 4-hole fingerings. This might be worth a look.
I've been thinking about getting one of these, and I was hoping that you'd do a review of it. (I'm intrigued by the silencers--it solves an important problem with practicing my ocarina--but I'm concerned that the sound makes it less fun to practice.)
It appears that it "could" play in harmony, but that might require too much skewing of the chambers; thence, the finger holes, such that they wouldn't align. It's doable, but then you might need keys to maintain the fingering, at which point you have a very vulnerable part that's exposed, and knocks it out of "take anywhere safely".
Intonation seems good. Really interesting just wish it was more natural looking. On a side not after looking at the price I will definitely be getting one though, I think the silence feature is great, volume is the biggest reason why my ocarinas are my least used instrument. Always loved wind instruments but they're too loud for my household.
Sounds like an awesome instrument! The silencers is an especially cool feature. I'm very much a beginner to wind instruments (having much more experience with the piano), but I'm always afraid of bothering someone when playing the tin whistle that I've bought. This sounds like the perfect instrument for me! > Amazon: currently unavailable Just a shame it's out of stock right now :-/
This is a great review, David. I have the Coda and like it a lot, and appreciate the ingenuity that went into it, as you point out. I play recorders and sopilkas and other instruments but I'm new to the ocarina. I understand that it's expected that you have to learn to adjust breath pressure a cross the scale to get accurate pitch, to match A=440 for example, to play with others. Do you find that to get accurate pitch on the Coda the breath pressure is comparable to other ocarinas you play? I'm finding that at what feels like a normal pressure range for normal volume I'm a half-step flat across the entire instrument, while to get to A=440 it needs to be played quite loud. Maybe that's just the way it has to be. How do you find this in your experience with the Coda?
All ocarinas are vessel flutes, but not all vessel flutes are Ocarinas. There have been some very strong opinions within the ocarina community about what constitutes as an ocarina (specifically when comparing to the original transverse shape/style), which is why Karl wanted to make that distinction.

I wonder how it's possible to get it so compact with such small holes. When I think of e.g. the max range pendant Ocarina, then it's already quite big and has big holes and the double must even be bigger...
I would love to see a review of STL purple clay double since it's a popular model but there are no reviews I've seen. Thanks for your reviews. I've enjoyed watching them all.
As "portable" as it is, I really dont like the bulky design. It looks like a toy. I really miss their Ocarinas. Does anyone know if they plan to ever release them again?
The Coda is what got me interested in wind. (I am primarily a string player.) After 3 or 4 hours of research, I wound up buying a night by noble ocarina. (I legitimately didn't have the ocarina on my musical radar beforehand, whatsoever.) I still intend to buy a Coda, but the alto C ocarina seemed a better place to start. I have since received it and love it. However, the silencer of the Coda seems a lovely feature, now that I have begun practice. 😂 I am very glad I began playing wind, and your channel is an absolute asset, David.
I agree, I really feel the NbN is one of the best Ocarinas to start with, and it will transition well to the Coda! And thank you for the kind words, that means a lot ☺️
The little plane printed on the box is not just cosmetics, you can actually play it in a plane. I have a friend that played it on a flight to Florida, using the silencers of course.
This guy hasn’t had inventory in a while but he’s about to start more. He’s moving his whole family and he’s moving almost next door to me 😊
Hey David, great review -- I met Karl quite a number of years ago at a homeschooling convention here in Massachusetts, and have one of his early wooden Mountain Ocarinas made with phenolic resin and red oak, as well as a couple of the newer plastic Mountain Ocarinas. ubizmo Very good points. I haven’t seen you post for a while. I hope you are doing well.🙂
I kind of wish they continued to make their old Mountain Ocarinas along with this. I never had a chance to grab one before they were discontinued. But this is an incredible instrument, and I'll have to try and pick one up someday
Me too, I never got to get a Mountain Ocarina. 😢
I see two for sale on Ebay.
I dont like these Codas at all. I agree
Same
Same here. I really wanted a mountain one. Just came back from their site and see they are not selling them, at least not right now.
I’ve always wanted a mountain ocarina back in the day but I was a kid when you reviewed it back then, maybe now that I’m an adult with adult money I can get this

I hope he designs and sells a Harmony version of this in the future.
The design behind this is fascinating. Clearly he has been thinking and working at this for a long time.

There's a Zin plastic ocarina that also does the two chamber same fingering idea, but the Coda is still amazing
What utter hyperbole ...

I've had my Coda for just over a year now and i love it! The range for the size and weight is fantastic.

Wow, there is a lot of innovation in this instrument.
watching davids old videos and watching his new ones, i love how much more comfortable he is on camera. i notice him talking with his hands much more now than he used to
A flute? WHAT KINDA VIDEO IS THIS DAVID WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU (kidding kidding nice review!)
Hi Victoria Nelson remember me:3
@@bigtumgo yes I remember to you from the livesreams!
This sounds more like an ocarina than any flute that I have played. But I think I can use it with my arthritic hands.
this is awesome!

FYI the Coda EDC can be disinfected with alcohol. Another good feature to know about.🤔🧐😎
I really like the look of it. And that song you played was captivating. This was a great review
This is a great in-depth review! Thanks David!
I absolutely love your channel dude, I hope you continue to do your awesome videos
Great review! I had been on the fence about adding one of these to my collection of whistles and ocarinas but was really intrigued by it's possibilities. Yes, it's helpful to see other people's journeys. It's very encouraging to see the progress and lessons learned. 😁
(Treble Maker Carol)🎼🎶
Hey Carol! I think it would be awesome if David would do a musical journey journal. 🙂
Awesome as always David! 👍🏽
Finally!
Thank you, David!
Thanks David. I have been a fan for years. My hands are arthritic now and I can't play the large ocarinas. I can still play my original 4 hole ocarinas and I am sure that I can play the Coda EDC flute.
Sure is easier on the joints than guitar!
Question. I just bought my coat at EDC Ocarina today. Eventually even after clearing the moisture out by blowing or sucking, there’s got to be some kind of mild bacteria or odor How do you clean the inside thoroughly. To make it like new.

The silencers look like car fuses.

Yep, I remember when he announced he would be making the two chamber oc ten years ago. Been a long wait.
I wish they made a tenor version of it.
I thought it was a tenor and soprano. It has two octaves
Do you mean Bass? Ocarinas are Bass, Alto, Soprano.
My wife plays pennywhistle and this looks like something she would also enjoy. I'm impressed with how sweetly you play those higher notes! My question is whether one can play fast and dancy (120 bpm) reels and jigs on this type of instrument? Thanks for a very informative review!

I'm finding my 50 year-old, childhood clarinet experiences flashing back into my head as I learn this instrument.
Just a Great Instrument. Thanks for this review.
Video was a little dark, but great review David. Keep up the good work :)
(I'm intrigued by the silencers--it solves an important problem with practicing my ocarina--but I'm concerned that the sound makes it less fun to practice.)
hey David what is your fav muse? iv been looking to get one but am unsure which one to get . i work with 12 hole ocarinas at the moment
The pure tone of transverse ocarinas is what makes them hurt the ears so much. Having some sound texture is a good thing.
That range and sound is great!
> Amazon: currently unavailable
Just a shame it's out of stock right now :-/
I NEED ITTTT.
Once you get around to it, I think it would be cool if you did some Russian music on Ocarin.
After the St. Patrick's day video, of course.
You have great tone!
Nice review, I want one. BTW - an ocarina is a vessel flute, so I don't see the point in distinguishing this as different.
All ocarinas are vessel flutes, but not all vessel flutes are Ocarinas. There have been some very strong opinions within the ocarina community about what constitutes as an ocarina (specifically when comparing to the original transverse shape/style), which is why Karl wanted to make that distinction.
David Erick Ramos - Ocarina thanks for the clarification.
Glad to bring you closer to more likes greeaat review!
I love cargos too
This might be what I need to get if I wanna practice in my apartment.
Can you teach us to play different songs
it' s the best purchase I've ever made in my life.
I wish they'd make a"bass" ocarina like this because it'll be worth it just as much
hey! ive been watching your videos for awhile and ive gotta ask, are you ever gonna redo your cover of ballad of the wind fish from links awakening? i just thought, since there was a remake of the game released on the switch, maybe youd do a new version of the cover you did a few years ago? i absolutely loved it when i first saw it, and itd be great to see you do it again, years later.
I wonder how it's possible to get it so compact with such small holes. When I think of e.g. the max range pendant Ocarina, then it's already quite big and has big holes and the double must even be bigger...
Would love to see you review the max range triple bass
Is this similar to the stl max range double?
are you ever going to talk about the mr. mute accessory, I remember when you mentioned it a list video?
I have an intense need for a Coda now. 🤣
very beautiful sound:)
I would love to see a review of STL purple clay double since it's a popular model but there are no reviews I've seen.
Thanks for your reviews. I've enjoyed watching them all.
wow! looks like a cool instrument, only thing is theyre out of stock...
As "portable" as it is, I really dont like the bulky design. It looks like a toy. I really miss their Ocarinas. Does anyone know if they plan to ever release them again?
Awesome for practicing! I want one. Kkkkk... thanks!
Links to full pieces of music played on this?
What's the different from ocarina and recorder
Is there a way to silence a normal ocarina similar to the way this flute does. I just started playing and don't want to annoy the neighbors.
There is a device that can be placed on most ocarinas called “Mr Mute”. You can find it through the link in my description to my amazon page.
strictly meant for practicing? ill take that as a challenge
This is awesome
1000 person to like this Coda video review. I will be buying two Codas.
What a brilliant design!
The Coda is what got me interested in wind. (I am primarily a string player.) After 3 or 4 hours of research, I wound up buying a night by noble ocarina. (I legitimately didn't have the ocarina on my musical radar beforehand, whatsoever.)
I still intend to buy a Coda, but the alto C ocarina seemed a better place to start.
I have since received it and love it.
However, the silencer of the Coda seems a lovely feature, now that I have begun practice. 😂
I am very glad I began playing wind, and your channel is an absolute asset, David.
I agree, I really feel the NbN is one of the best Ocarinas to start with, and it will transition well to the Coda! And thank you for the kind words, that means a lot ☺️
Mine didn't come with a box. :'(
Mine didn't either, but I got the black mouth piece. Maybe the box was for the limited edition ivory mouth? 🤔
@@czntrm I got the ivory mouthpiece and it didn't have a box.
I think the box is something new. I didn’t get one either and mine has the ivory mouth piece. In fact I have two Coda’s with no box. 😩😭😂
But I did get a nice cloth pouch for each of them. 🤔🧐😎
I could play stairway flute part on that .
How to buy that treasure in Spain, please?I search and the enterprise send it only to the united states, england,China japan and Corea 🙏🤷♂️
Not sure if this helps but you can order them off Amazon now, that’s where I got mine.
That flute looks like it feels like a golf club grip.
Do you still edc a lot of gear?? How bout a pocket dump?
I actually did film a pocket dump for the video, but it was already too long, so I cut it. I’ll probably post my daily gear on Instagram 😉
i wish you played it
Kinda looks like a E-vape.
w radio de la vida de los que no me ha hecho que se han hecho un poco más de la vida de los que no
It's a shame you cant play chords on this that would make it 10 times better
