I remember watching this game as an 11 year old child and it still hurts today, although we got our revenge 2 years later. Of course I knew back then and I definitely know now that the Dutch are not only amazing footballers (considering the small size of the country) but in general pretty cool people. There's a lot I like about the netherlands and far more we've got in common then what separates us. Yet that rivalry in football remains and it's the spice that makes the game so wonderful. :-)
As a Dutch guy, when Holland is out I root for Germany... I was really happy for Germany when they won the 2014 World Cup. I have some German friends and they were sorry for me that Holland didn't win it in 2010... would have been great but oh well

Is it just me or.... Watching Germany/Holland games down through the decades, they always seemed quite intense affairs, with a genuine and often volatile rivalry quite apparent. I presume this to be parallel to an already-existing cultural and historical rivalry which was carried over and emulated nationally by players and fans alike through the arena of international football?

I thougt the penalty given in final of WC 1990 was because Voller felt down, not Klinsmann. Great players by the way, although Van Basten would be my favorite. Perhaps the best no9 in those years, ultimate center forward.

Interestingly just yesterday I (Dutch) was thinking that this jersey was the worst in Dutch football history. Yet it is the only one we won a title with! I think the Dutch jerseys from the seventies were their best ones.
@Sun Wu-Entai 90 It's not a 'fake' penalty, deliberately or not Rijkaard did impede Klinsmann. And it certainly looks as though the player deliberately aims the ball at the referee, he doesn't kick it hard away to the stands, he turns his body to face the ref and kicks it towards him. Disrespectful, and not at all how a player is supposed to behave, regardless of if he thinks the correct decision has been made.

Klinsmann was clearly hit. He accepted the invitation very willingly though. So you could blame him for putting up too much drama. But Kohler played the ball as far as I'm concerned and he tackled from the side. Not really a penalty.

West Germany - Nederland I know for you English speaking people a bit puzzling but the country is called Nederland. Some of the locals call it Holland also but they just want to be kind to you .
maybe you are right,but sometimes its good to close an eye. Holland was hard punished by the penalty and a red card direct after the penal could have been to much.
Back then both penalties were questionable but today 2019 both would easily be given any day. Shall we call it what🤷🏿♂️IMPROVEMENT OR JUST NEW RULES🤷🏿♂️
Everybody is insane: Klinsmann kicks the ball one way and dives the other way..... van Basten is molested to the ground but keeps on (trying to) play the ball. It is so easy: I keep a close watch on this match of mine, my eyes are wide open all the time!
It looked like the German got the ball so that penalty would be overturned by Var today. Klinsmann turned into the defender to dive and that would be overturned as well.
@@imateapot51 I'm not sure if the German defender touched it, but if he does his toe only touches it, and it is hard to say whether it is before he takes the legs of Van Basten. Not to mention VAR didn't stop lots of bizarre decisions at the last world cup! As for Klinsmann, no, the defender made contact with him, and penalties are often given for such contact, no matter the histrionics of the striker, though it varies greatly still between referees. I agree with Buder. By the way, Kliinsmann did NOT turn INTO the defender; Rijkaard's leg did slightly block him, the only dishonest thing he did was his fake reaction to suggest heavier contact. That was less common back then, but is now par for the course and sometimes PRAISED by pundits.

@Sun Wu-Entai 90 It's not a 'fake' penalty, deliberately or not Rijkaard did impede Klinsmann. And it certainly looks as though the player deliberately aims the ball at the referee, he doesn't kick it hard away to the stands, he turns his body to face the ref and kicks it towards him. Disrespectful, and not at all how a player is supposed to behave, regardless of if he thinks the correct decision has been made.

I am Dutch but I did and still do think the German penalty really was a penalty. At least more than the Dutch one. Still what a great night that was and a deserved winner.
Klinsmann was clearly hit. He accepted the invitation very willingly though. So you could blame him for putting up too much drama. But Kohler played the ball as far as I'm concerned and he tackled from the side. Not really a penalty.
Maar laat ik eerlijk zijn. De penalty voor Duitsland was wel een panalty. De penalty van Nederland was geen panalty. Ik moet dat eerlijk zeggen.

Two dreadful penalty decisions in this vid. Typical Klinsmann dive to get Germany theirs. Obviously Klinsmann was cleverer than the ref, but that´s not necessarily saying much. And there´s yer trouble...

West Germany - Nederland I know for you English speaking people a bit puzzling but the country is called Nederland. Some of the locals call it Holland also but they just want to be kind to you .

maybe you are right,but sometimes its good to close an eye. Holland was hard punished by the penalty and a red card direct after the penal could have been to much.
Back then both penalties were questionable but today 2019 both would easily be given any day. Shall we call it what🤷🏿♂️IMPROVEMENT OR JUST NEW RULES🤷🏿♂️
Top be honest, the dutch penalty was nothing! And I am dutch.
Everybody is insane: Klinsmann kicks the ball one way and dives the other way..... van Basten is molested to the ground but keeps on (trying to) play the ball. It is so easy: I keep a close watch on this match of mine, my eyes are wide open all the time!
It looked like the German got the ball so that penalty would be overturned by Var today. Klinsmann turned into the defender to dive and that would be overturned as well.
@@imateapot51 I'm not sure if the German defender touched it, but if he does his toe only touches it, and it is hard to say whether it is before he takes the legs of Van Basten. Not to mention VAR didn't stop lots of bizarre decisions at the last world cup! As for Klinsmann, no, the defender made contact with him, and penalties are often given for such contact, no matter the histrionics of the striker, though it varies greatly still between referees. I agree with Buder. By the way, Kliinsmann did NOT turn INTO the defender; Rijkaard's leg did slightly block him, the only dishonest thing he did was his fake reaction to suggest heavier contact. That was less common back then, but is now par for the course and sometimes PRAISED by pundits.
