Of course I knew back then and I definitely know now that the Dutch are not only amazing footballers (considering the small size of the country) but in general pretty cool people. There's a lot I like about the netherlands and far more we've got in common then what separates us. Yet that rivalry in football remains and it's the spice that makes the game so wonderful. :-)
As a Dutch guy, when Holland is out I root for Germany... I was really happy for Germany when they won the 2014 World Cup. I have some German friends and they were sorry for me that Holland didn't win it in 2010... would have been great but oh well

Is it just me or.... Watching Germany/Holland games down through the decades, they always seemed quite intense affairs, with a genuine and often volatile rivalry quite apparent. I presume this to be parallel to an already-existing cultural and historical rivalry which was carried over and emulated nationally by players and fans alike through the arena of international football?

Klinsmann was clearly hit. He accepted the invitation very willingly though. So you could blame him for putting up too much drama. But Kohler played the ball as far as I'm concerned and he tackled from the side. Not really a penalty.

And it certainly looks as though the player deliberately aims the ball at the referee, he doesn't kick it hard away to the stands, he turns his body to face the ref and kicks it towards him. Disrespectful, and not at all how a player is supposed to behave, regardless of if he thinks the correct decision has been made.
After wining Euro 1988, the Dutch replaced coach, Rinus Mitchel with Libergates who didn't get along with the plsyers and the team played very badly and just disintegrated! Had Rinus Mitchel continued as coach, Holland would have been World Champions in 1990! Once again the Dutch shot themselves in their foot!

Hans van Breukelen was a penalty specialist. He worked together with a Dutch coach who made lists of many players and how they took their penalties. He probably knew how Matthäus would take it but the penalty was taken very well, just too sharp for Van Breukelen.

Of denk aan 5 wisselspelers op de bank waarvan er maar 2 (veldspelers) gewisseld konden worden. Niet hinderlijk buitenspel werd meestal afgefloten. (Kieft tegen Ierland was onterecht doelpunt.) En penalty’s werden toen niet gegeven bij licht contact of shirtje trekken. Nu zou een VAR de eerste penalty eerder wel dan niet gegeven hebben - ben ik met je eens - maar de tweede? Blijft discutabel vind ik. Maar in die tijd was het zeker geen strafschop.

Hans Van strudel nearly saved old lothars penalty
Hans van Breukelen was a penalty specialist. He worked together with a Dutch coach who made lists of many players and how they took their penalties. He probably knew how Matthäus would take it but the penalty was taken very well, just too sharp for Van Breukelen.

It was a foul though, and since it was in the penalty area you can see why he gave a penalty.
Waarom waren dat geen penalties? Nu zou de VAR ze ook hebben gegeven.
Er zijn in de loop der jaren al zoveel spelregels veranderd of aangepast! Een keeper die een terugspeelbal nog kon oppakken bv. Of denk aan 5 wisselspelers op de bank waarvan er maar 2 (veldspelers) gewisseld konden worden. Niet hinderlijk buitenspel werd meestal afgefloten. (Kieft tegen Ierland was onterecht doelpunt.)
En penalty’s werden toen niet gegeven bij licht contact of shirtje trekken.
Nu zou een VAR de eerste penalty eerder wel dan niet gegeven hebben - ben ik met je eens - maar de tweede? Blijft discutabel vind ik. Maar in die tijd was het zeker geen strafschop.
