Ich habe dieses Spiel aufgesaugt. Jede einzelne Minute. Bin fast gestorben vor Dramatik. Und nun, 26 Jahre später, fesselt mich diese Zusammenfassung noch immer. Was für ein Spiel, Tempo, Atmosphäre im Stadion. Auch wenn die Räume heute surreal wirken. Was für Typen mit Casgoigne auf der einen und Sammer auf der anderen Seite. Ich bin immer noch glücklich, dieses Spiel live gesehen zu haben und freue mich daran, es gerade wieder zu finden

Habe mir einen Halben Tag Urlaub genommen. Hatte Spätschicht. Das war das Endspiel (Viertel) . Es hätte jeder weiter kommen können. Es war besser als 1-7 gegen Brasilien.
Ich habe es auch aufgesaugt und jetzt bekomme ich es nicht mehr aus dem Staubsauger raus. Kannst du mir helfen? ❤

Möller wurde vor dem Spiel bereits regelrecht niedergemacht und das erklärt auch seine Reaktion nach dem Elfmeter mit der stolzen Geste.
Wie schön mal wieder elfmeter mit viel Anlauf und ohne gekasper zu sehen. Die Zusammenfassung macht mehr Spaß als jedes Champions league Finale der letzten Jahre

Man ... I watched almost every match of our German team since 1990 world championship and I think I've never read a comment more fitting than yours. Whenever I think about one of the most tense and powerful confrontations ever (including another Wembley-fraud ;) ), I always have to remember Germany-England 1996. I think my best friend, my father and me were standing, cursing, cheering for two hours straight. What a battle!

He was a unique combination of speed and technical skill - the fastest player in international football, + technically perfect. "Turbo Möller" should've become the best player in his days, and 1 of the best ever;
but, he did not have the right mentality and therefore "disappeared" out of many games, especially when it really mattered.
Even in this game, he could in an earlier stage have decided it by outrunning the English with the ball in his feet to score (for a distance of up to some 80 meters) - one of his trademarks, mostly in "smaller" games...

To win game I had my Scotland kit on ..running jumping with joy with some German family the place was full of English people didn’t understand why they didn’t Attack us ..but we had great banter with everyone ..one of. One of the great games in football history. The Golden Goal era and a legendary extra time with both teams going for the sudden death. Heart stopping moments every couple of minutes. Referee Puhl wanted England to win. I remember that funny footnote. England lucky not get get players sent off. Kuntz´ 2-1 golden goal was legit IMO. Best penalty shootout in terms of the quality of the pens.
I love the way this video is edited and put together, no irrelevant scenes, right to the point.

Ich liebe diese Engländer...Weiß noch wie die MP in die Kneipe stürmte und allen Militarys was auf die Mütze gab. Es war immer eine freundliche Feindschaft. Dieses Spiel war eine Schlacht. Danke für den Schnitt und Upp....Spiele wie diese gehören ins Kino.

Football has changed - but in terms of athleticism and technique it has vastly improved... The way England were kicking Germany all over the pitch is pretty shocking in 2021, I remember thinking that they were all fair challenges at the time.

Football has lost something these days. I'm not even excited about England Germany 2021. The game is too tactical now. Lots of pretty triangles, passing the ball side to side and being obsessed with stats. I miss this intensity and passion on the pitch. There are no characters in the game no more either. Everyone has to say, do and think the same.
Blame pep guardiola for that. He forced teams to play possession football at the highest level

Eines dieser Spiele, an das man noch in 50 Jahren denken wird. Die Verlängerung war der absolute Thriller. Bin damals fast gestorben.
Ich hab mein Abi versaut und bin heute stolz drauf dieses Spiel gesehen zu haben. Mitunter das Beste was es gab. Ich hör es heute noch Gascoigne ich bin Paul Gascoigne. PS: Ein Jahr später hab ichs nachgeholt. Allein die Namen Sheringham, Shearer, Anderton, McManaman, Pearce, Gascoigne und der arme Southgate haben sich manifestiert. Ich danke diesen Spielen heute für dieses großartige Spiel damals.
Dieses Spiel und dann das Elfmeterschießen war unerträglich für mich als Zuschauer und trotzdem wie im Kommentar erwähnt ein Elfmeter besser als der andere geschossen.
Für mich ist es das intensivste und emotionalste Spiel was ich jemals gesehen habe. Zumindest habe ich das damals mit 13 Jahren so empfunden! Ich bin vor dem Fernseher auf und ab gelaufen vor Aufregung! :-)

Even accepting that you could get away with a lot more back then, there were so many tackles in this match that should have resulted In a card of one colour or another. Most people in England lament the Gazza ‘miss’, but I forgot we hit the post as well. Germany’s second goal should have stood. We rode our look in that tournament, I’d say we were on the fortunate side of getting past Spain in the previous round.

Pure corruption this was england never should have had this much help from the ref the fouls were out of control and the disallowed goal is pure match fixing. They tried their hardest and still couldn't do it well done to England

Wie geil. Danke fürs Teilen. Ich war damals als Hörfunk-Reporter dabei und habe das Spiel gemeinsam mit einem Kollegen von Radio NRW komplett live übertragen dürfen. Hat keiner gehört, war trotzdem der größte Radio-Abend meiner Laufbahn, unvergessen! (Das Schild "COMMENTARY POSITION" aus dem Wembley-Stadion hab' ich damals abmontiert und mitgenommen, hab' ich heute noch...)
As a french I wish both teams could have lost... But I have to recognize English deserved a better ending, given you can feel they were ready to die on the pitch...

What a game, rough and tough. Both would have deserved it. Funny thing is, the German commentator even cpmplained about the ref that he gave yellow cards too quickly :D
Still respect Southgate for having the guts to take one. Ince, Mcmanaman and Anderton were all players who had goals in them and were more obvious candidates but they all bottled it.
Southgate also hit it on target, and managed to lead us into our first victory in a World Cup penalty shootout 22 years later. That redemption must've been huge for him.
It was nothing to do w/ him m8. The manager is helpless in any penalty shootout in any given match.
What is unforgivable is he made money from that miss.

@@tonybroderick4808 It's actually down to Kane not squaring to Sterling and Lingard missing his chance that we didn't get to the final. Having said that, Southgate probably noticed this mistake and switched both forwards around.
English players played very dirty. Loved to see Germany won this game. Delighted to see Andy Muller's celebration too. England team got what they deserved in this match.
I think Andreas Möller's posing after he scored was embarrassing (I'm from Germany :)). But I loved to watch this match as a 14-year-old kid, I remember being nervous, but also super excited, pure emotions. Today's football is totally leaving me cold in comparison.

I had't realised (or I'd forgotten) that Germany played England without their two main forwards at the time, Klinsmann and Bierhoff.

The championship goal against Czech republic scored by bierhoff's head. I think that was a golden goal or sudden death goal.

Ref did his best to help England and keep them playing with 11 players, but at the end, Germany will always prevail, they have the right mentality...

Stefan Kuntz is the kind of player germany lacks at the moment, a pure forward,a pure goal hunting machine
25 caps for Germany, 6 goals. Even Füllkrug stands at 11 goals in 15 matches. The german national team has very different problems, although the last two matches against France and the Netherlands were a much needed improvement.
Garmany always plays as a team and fight till the end👍

this was actually in real terms the final what a game I was getting close to passing out at the penalties..we lost fair and square I actually think the German second goal WAS a goal no foul
I think that this is actually the most fascinating England v Germany game of all. What a battle, what an atmosphere. Yes, the second German goal should have counted. But on the other hand it would have been a shame to conclude this great match with a golden goal. Penalties were appropriate. And the shootout was probably the best of all times. Legendary game! Let's hope for another encounter in Qatar. Greetings from Germany

@@jillesguzman3333 For me the 1970 World cup quarter final is the best ever. I am maybe biased as it was the first World Cup or Euro match I saw from TV. But this 1996 match is definitely were high on that list. Incredible intensity.

Germany had so many talents; Juergen Klinsmann, Thomas Haessler, Matthias Sammer ( Former EastGermany) , Andi Moeller, Andreas Koepke, Fredi Bobic( Both Klinsmann, and Bobic couldn't play this game due to injuries ) , Oliver Bierhoff( Bierhoff scored two goals againstCzech in the final) , Christian Ziege, .....
And England was even better man for man except for penalty taking.
Andy Möller probably was the most gifted player here in the match, an outstanding talent! He was literally the best player in the world at that time.
