@@Tha-King-Arthur, no way that they were better than great players like Van Basten, Gullit, Rijkaard, Koeman, Vanenburg and Wouters! Only the generation of Johan Cruyff in the seventies was better than that of 1988.
I was born after the 74-78 totaalvoetbal years with Michels and Cruyff, but as a young impressionable boy in 1988 I fell in love with Oranje. Big moments I remember are Marco van Basten's hattrick against England, and the very tight semi-final against West Germany, with first a penalty to the Germans, then the Dutch, and then van Bastens goal at the very end. Both my older brothers were fans of Germany, but I stood my ground. Of course I remember this final, too, but even for a 7 year old it was a bit of a blur. I had fallen in love. To be fair, to be more precise, the effect was even bigger. Gullit, van Basten, Koeman, Rijkhard, Bosman and company didn't make me fall in love only with that specific team or subsequent iterations of the Oranje, but also with football as a sport (I played until U18 on a high level), with spectator sports as a whole, with the Netherlands as a nation, with Dutch as a language... the effect was profound. And I'm from Finland. Later when our own Jari Litmanen played a big part of his career for Ajax, it didn't exactly lessen my love :D I have since travalled to the Netherlands many times and learned enough of the language to be able to read simple text (can understand if I read a newspaper, unless it's about very complex issues), but understanding spoken dutch is still difficult. In 1998 I was heartbroken when perhaps the best Oranje I've seen (van der Saar, both de Boers, Cocu, Davids, Jonk, Kluivert, Seedorf, van Bronckhorst, Overmars, Kluivert, Bergkamp) lost on penalties to Brazil in the semi-final. And I had really really liked Brazil, too, since 1990 or at the very least since 1994, so I was a bit surprised with how dissapointed I was. It was perhaps the first time I was reminded of that one can only have one favorite. I really liked Tiki-Taka, too, and developed a fondness for Spain because of it. But I got this same reminder in 2010. I travelled to the Netherlands to see the final, I chose the student city of Groeningen over Amsterdam, to have a better, more intimate party, and I thought that I wouldn't be so dissapointed if Spain wins, because I liked their play, too. How wrong was I. It was an even bigger dissapointment than 1998. No need to talk more about that dissapointment, but it left a wound in my heart, probably very similar to what those older generations felt when experiencing 1974 and 1978. In the 2012 euro qualifications Holland and Suomi were drawn into the same qualifying group, but that was not a problem. I went to see Finland's home game dressed in Orange, and I made some friends (who were dumbfounded). It did not feel wrong to support a team against my home nation, which I love and cherish. As Finland has since become more of a contender to participate in Euros and maybe in worlds, too, it could be more difficult in the future if (and eventually when) they meet. I believe, that I won't be too dissapointed if my country Finland beats my team Oranje, but I may be in for a third reminder, that one can only have one favorite team...

Great football times! The magical 1982 World Cup, Platini's and Maradona's finest hours in 1984 and '86 respectively, and finally that awesome Dutch team of 1988!
Wonderful memories!
Wow jij was 12.
@@joentjekapoentje -12. Dus 12 jaar voordat ik geboren was...
@@Drie_Kleuren OWWWW haha. Ja dan klopt het wel😄😄😄. Sorry. Verkeerd gelezen👍
I was 10 and 14 years old when The Netherlands lost the worldcup finals in 74 and 78. Since then I didn't follow the orange team anymore, I was working when they won the EC of 1988. Unbelievable!
The day football without silly drama and incidents.
@Dan Swildens no drama bro. Just pure football action
Lol. Look at the semi vs Germany.
@@visfanaat8188 agree. At that time, there's a big animosity between those two.
@@visfanaat8188 Thats Mattheus, the biggest dramaturg ever in German football history .
Rinus Michels !!! Wow . Best manager ever.
05:23 The greatest goal ever scored in a tournament final, and likely in the top 10 of greatest goals ever scored in the history of football.
Never to be seen again this European Championship because Russian soccer players are punished for being oppressed by their terrible dictator Putin.
AC Milan was big and power, what a time
Kippenvel. Fantastisch mooi. ❤ 🇳🇱
Finally a win after then 2 losses in the World Cup Finals! We also need a World Cup win hope it's in 2026!
haha dat gaat niet gebeuren 😂
1974, 1978 and 2010...3 loses
3 losses my friend. That is insane. The Dutch deserve AT LEAST 1 Cup!
Tears of joy. Still.
Sovjet Union had a great team but couldn´t match with the individual qualities of the Dutch team
Soviet union - empire of the evil.
@@ruslanshunevich1016 That's true,but it's still a great team
@@prog1962 They are won something? Great team...He.
@@ruslanshunevich1016 They did: The Euros of 1960.
A few Russians were also very skilled. It wasn't only their team work.
Mooi man!!
Let's admit Dassaev was a fabulous goalkeeper.
edited because I watched the Netherlands in tournaments from '74 (eight years old) up until coming EC 24 (do the maths). It;s very, very rare to see them end on top, have my hopes up for this one ('24) as I think Depay is on peak form and we got some real talent in midfield. Let's gooooo Holland!
It was a wonderful day for Rinus Michels, who had the worst day of his career in the same stadium 14 years earlier.
Just seeing that zeppelin at the start gives me goosebumps.😅 i dont know why
This for me is the best football moment of my life
Russia was part of the championship back then. Now it will never be again!
Trio AC Milan Van Basten, Gullit and Rijkaard what a Dream team
Remember this day well. Was 14. Had fish and chips. Went straight to Karate. Vomited at Karate. Watched this game with Dad wanting USSR to win because I was a fan of Dasayev.
Number 6: Berry van Aerle.
A great player and a very nice guy!
He won a lot in his career:
1. European Championship
2. Europa Cup 1 (European Cup)
3. Eredivisie (Dutch championship): 5 times
4. KNVB Beker (Dutch Cup): 3 times
5. Johan Cruijff Shield
Not too bad...
Group 2 was amazing, apart from England. Ireland played the Soviets off the park in the group and just couldn't get the 2nd killer goal. Then were extremely unfortunate to concede a freakish late goal against the Netherlands, in a game Netherlands had to win. Great tournament.
The best Netherlands team , unfortunate not to win world cup!

Great match lots of shots on goal love it
¡ Gran GOL de Van Basten !
That dribbling at 4:18. Amazing
Great Match
The goalkeeper for the netherlands (van Breukelen) is so underrated. 2nd best dutch goalkeeper OAT
At 5:51 in slow motion the masterpiece where football takes its highest representation !! He stood still for a while rubbing my eyes thinking he saw a flash (of the big Van Basten)
Is there any opta type stats for this match or the 1988 tournament?
3:05... could not even remember that one. Mother of all tackles and not even performed by an Italian
Haha mooi verwoord , de Spijker .
@@jonaswhale6451 Legendarische verdediger, de Spijker inderdaad, was ik even vergeten, thanks!
super geweldige tijd was dat,,!!!!
Die manier van commentaar geven. 'Deee beste voetbalploeg... ...vaaaan Europa...
I was in Utrecht at the time trying to get home - but public transport came to a halt because fans where jumping up and down on the roof of buses. Finally I did not care - all the pubs where a sea of orange and finally the dutch lion had conquered. I decided to get drunk like everybody else. Good times.
Toen werd er nog echt gevoetbald. Tegenwoordig hebben ze allemaal de theaterschool gehad.
Full HD? No way!
Russian? OK!!!!! Ukraine the team was 80 % Ukraine Dynamo Kyiv, I can Understand...
@@love-vy1rynope, 15 out of 31 were from Dinamo Kyiv, and I remember that Lobanovskiy was heavily criticized for using so many players from his own club.

The best goal EVER in a final!!!!!
The total football!!!!
Where was this played?
I remember after the match we went outside for a drive in the car ,It was like the whole city dressed in orange and went outside. I mean everyone! (The Hague ,Holland) walking ,driving in cars with orange bed sheets over them hahaha.
Same year VanBasten, Gullit, Rijkard won the European Cup with AC Milan with a 4-0 destruction of Steaua Bucharest. On their way to the final they also beat Real Madrid 5-0
