One of the best sides I ever saw, this 88' Netherlands. Van Basten was the world's best scorer by a long shot, but Gullit was probably the best player in the world at that moment. What a delight.
I agree! I studied Gullit's movement, he was unique, a monster in a great era.

I was 9 too. I was playing outside when the tournament was on. We were building a “hut”, hideout of scrap planks etc. But back then tv was analog and so everyone was having the same content at the exact same time. And then the roar coming from all houses at the same time was quite impressive as a child. Never experienced that again. Nowadays with streaming everyone is a few seconds different so you don’t get that massive cheer anymore.

на олимпиаде любители играют, а на чемпионате европы играют профессионалы, хотя за ссср так же играют онди любители, в СССР не было профессионалов. Так что сафт факт того что ссср дошел до финала - удивительно. Как будто дворовая команда дошла до финала
и кстати везет сильнейшим, то что у ссср был так много промохов - им как раз не везло, потому что они были слабые
It is impossible to compare the Olympic Games with a European Championship. But indeed, the USSR were very strong and the Netherlands had a bit of luck in the final. If Belanov would have scored that penalty for example things might have gone quite differently. This USSR team was not lucky against the low countries, also losing to Belgium two years earlier after giving away an advantage twice.

I really wish Holland won more (1978, 2010 WCs) and Euro (2000) (though France was its peak). This side was really good along with the sides of the 70s and early 2010s. More consistency like Germany would have done the trick.
Netherlands circa 2010s was decent, not less, not more. Not exactly a world beater (in a period where Italy, France were in decline and Germany was just building its team). Spain eventually beating them just proved that back then.

This contest is not for small countries. This contest is for big countries, with the biggest amount of money in club investments (also at amature level) and therefore enough to compete in the strongest competitions. I forsee it will become more and more difficult for small countries like the Netherlands to get along with it and reaching a WC final; it still remains a very small probability.

Group 2 was amazing, apart from England. Ireland played the Soviets off the park in the group and just couldn't get the 2nd killer goal. Then were extremely unfortunate to concede a freakish late goal against the Netherlands, in a game Netherlands had to win. Great tournament.

I was 10 and 14 years old when The Netherlands lost the worldcup finals in 74 and 78. Since then I didn't follow the orange team anymore, I was working when they won the EC of 1988. Unbelievable!
Must have been a very special feeling for Rinus Michels, to win the title at this stadium, where 14 years earlier he had lost the Word Cup Final.
Remember this day well. Was 14. Had fish and chips. Went straight to Karate. Vomited at Karate. Watched this game with Dad wanting USSR to win because I was a fan of Dasayev.
Finally a win after then 2 losses in the World Cup Finals! We also need a World Cup win hope it's in 2026!

Och wat een tijd, echt bizar hoe blij iedereen was. Wat een feest, krijg er nog kriebels van en dan ook nog, vooral in die tijd, op de bodem vd vijand de titel halen.
Mis het non modern voetbal, spijkerhard, sokjes omlaag, ongeschoren etc. Bedrijven hebben vooral met geld het voetbal naar de knoppen geholpen.
Mooie tijd, jammer dat het niet meer terug komt.

Ik was toen op de camping in België die vol zat met Nederlanders, je zag niemand op straat en toen de wedstrijd was afgelopen gingen we de kantine in feest vieren. De Belgen wisten niet wat ze zagen, geweldig dit. Dit team had in 1990 wereldkampioen moeten worden.
