My grandfather is Italian.
I have only seen him cry when my grandmother died and when he sees Marco van Basten on television.
Even when Marco gives just commentary on a football game in a language my grandfather doesn’t understand.
That tells me how great Marco was, and still is, in Italy.

I can imagine you have mixed feelings about him. In that particular match the England side was unlucky, and the Dutch had Marco van Basten. It was a decisive victory for the Dutch, but if it weren't for Van Basten it could easily have gone the other way. But as a Dutch I am of course happy it didn't...

After they won the Euros in 88 they came to our Island Aruba for 1 week rest vacation..i got to see gullit, van B, Koeman, Rijkaard, Winter all play a beach football game..i'm a fan of Oranje since then..i was 10 years old

Marco Van Basten was the Leonardo Davinci of football . Unfortunately his career ended too soon . He was only 28 when his recurring ankle surgeries forced him to stop . He already had 3 ballons d’or . He would have definitely gotten that 4th, 5th and sixth . Definitely .

Did he play in 1993? His last official match was the CL final in Munic against Olympique on 26th may 1993. In jun/july 1993 he got suggery again. After that he never played an official match. Just some training excersises. And their was a rumour he would join the Dutch squad during WC 1994 in USA. But that was more of a political move from trainer Advocaat after Gullit suddently left that team a month before the WC started. The ‘ news’ MvB could play and would join the team, was to disattract the attention of Gullit his departure. Again he got suggery in june 1994. But he did not play anymore.

RJ TC he won 3 ballon d’ors but back then the ballon D’or only for European players so there’s many players better than van basten but they did not win the ballon d’ors .. in 1995 ballons d’or was expended to include all they players from any origin .. ballon D’or back then means best player in Europe and not the best player in the world .. I can name 4or 5 players on that time are better than van basten and maradona one of them

I forgot how unbelievably brilliant he was at beating defenders one on one, one on two in many of these clips! I remember his wonderful long range shooting ability with either foot as well as his amazing heading ability but not how agile and skilful he was with the ball at his feet. Apart from the odd South American player most genuine number 9 centre forwards back in the mid-late 80s didn’t have such a complete set of skills to choose from and still don’t to same super high levels that Marco had. His scoring ratio for club and country is phenomenal, especially in Italy as even though AC Milan were a very dominant club goals are never easily come by in Serie A, which is why despite so many commenters on here laughing at people suggesting he’s one of the greatest strikers of all time, Maradona said it was “Romario and Van Basten” as the best players he had ever seen. Paolo Maldini also credited him as the most complete player he’d ever played with. So I never think it’s possible to pick one greatest ever or think that’s important but to achieve what he did with constant injury problems throughout his sadly very short career and have so many of the greatest defenders, attackers and coaches hold him in such high regard says what a truly special talent he was. If that doesn’t deserve total respect then I’m not sure what does!?

Agreed, and you can forget about the moaning and play acting that comes with that clown Neymar. A prime Van Basten would not necessarily eclipse Messi but he would be right up there on the stats, and worth the £2-300m stipulated. Magnificent player robbed of the prime of his career, and the public robbed of seeing more class.

The bycicle kicks look more spectaculair but the 88 final volley is much more complicated to perfect. The window of scoring is so immens small you need to hit it better than perfect. Marco said he did not know what to do with this pass so he did what his intuïtion told him, "you will never hit it like this, 1 in thousand". Technically the 88 final goal is the hardest. Number #1 for me - still goosebumps ✨️✨️✨️

Damn right! I've watched that goal over and over through the years and i still don't know how he put that much dip on that bloody ball. When there's a tv programme about the best goals ever, it's rightly regularly nominated as one of the top goals of all time.

When young and with two healthy ankles how easily he could turn or overtake an opponent or even shoot left or right is incredible. And he made it all look easy and did it so gracefully. What an incredible player he was. In Italy he played at maybe 70% of his potential imo.
