Funny that the England coach doesn't talk about the referee mistake knowing that it was a fair goal by Rijkaard. Bergkamp was better then a lot of Dutch people think.
It's one thing to get the split second offside decision wrong. It's entirely another to miss a red card sending off. That's not a split second decision but a deliberation that was cowardly because he just didn't want to make a big call. Instead he didn't give a penalty and he didn't give the deserved and obvious red.
Rijkaard is an amazing guy, not a word though he surely knew he wasn't offside. Ik had the pleasure playing with him in Abcoude veteran team in Amsterdam the year before he signed as Barcelona coach. Fantastic man on and off the pitch.
When you look at this match in hindsight you wonder how these Referees make the decisions that they do . Rykards goal should have stood . Koeman should have been sent off as should the Dutch number 5 for that tackle on Parker , but what annoys me most is , after Koeman pulls Platt down , from the resulting Free Kick , before the ball is even kicked there's a Dutch defender about 4 yards from the ball , it hits him and Holland go on the attack and the Ref does nothing about it . Yet when Holland get a Free Kick , as Koeman kicks the ball Ince does exactley the same thing moves before the ball is kicked , gets booked and the kick is retaken from which Koeman scores . Inconsistancy
I was 11 too in '93 watching it on TV with my dad! Looking back now, I don't think I've ever witnessed a game since with so much controversy and drama... so many incidents: Rijkaard's 'goal' should have stood in the first half; Ronald Koeman should have clealy been sent off though it's debatable whether his foul was inside the area; the free kick should also have been retaken as Wouters was about 2 yards away when Dorigo hit it; his brother should have seen red for his foul (almost like Nigel De Jong on Xavi Alonso!) on Parker; and Pallister's foul looked inside the box too!! If any game summed up England in my lifetime, this is it. Thanks for the upload dude.
It's not debatable whether his foul was inside the area - it's either in or it's out and it's clearly fucking out. Still love watching this game and hearing the English piss and moan.
***** Yeah we invented the game, but that doesnt make us a great footballing nation. When it comes to winning we are almost embarrased. What has happened is that the liberal elite has made Englishness synonymous with racism, subjugation, empire. Look at the independence debate in Scotland, all the time England is being blamed for Scotlands lack of prosperity. In this climate our footballers who put the shirt on don't care because theyve been told not to care by outside elements. You might think i'm over dramatising, but as an international team we are finished.
@@MrCrazyrob666 Did you know that the Irish FA put in complaint about the Handball , But IFA offerd the Irish 3 Million quid not to , because as Blatter said France would be a bigger name in the finals than Ireland
As a Dutch guy I admit Ronald Koeman should have been sent off, but this just goes to show that some referees don't know what they're doing or how to "implement" the rules... Definitely a red card.
When Koeman fouled Platt we should have been 1-0 up. Rijkaard scored a perfect goal that whas given off site. There where 3 defenders between Rijkaard and the keeper if you see the replay this is christal clear. So if we roam into the "should have been territory" Holland where 1-0 up! So I would say Koeman would not have touched Platt with a 1-0 lead. So Koeman should have been off the pitch is not an issue. Holland should have been 1-0 up!! Why is nowbody mentioning this!!!
Cracking game. Seaman made a couple of decent saves but really was poor for both Dutch goals. Frank Rijkaards “offside” goal was terrible call - three England players were playing him onside.
I still remember when Graham Taylor reacted to that Ronald Koeman's tackle to David Platt: "REFEREEEEEEEEEEEE! REFEREEEEEEEEEEEE!" (As seen on Do I Not Like That)
leaves you with mixed feelings this (England supporters anyway!). You do wonder how Koeman (no to mention his brother if that was him going in studs up...) didn't take a walk for that foul. On the other hand, Dutch had a perfectly legit goal disallowed in 1st half. And if England had got better results elsewhere (surrendering 2-0 lead to Dutch at Wembley + losing to Norway if I remember right), they wouldn't have been in this predicament.
It's absolutely unbelievable that a player of Bergkamp's quality didn't prove successful in Inter Milan. In the role he played in this game, he was unstoppable. England was lucky that he was more wasteful than normal. The pass for Rijkaard was sublime.
Because back then players and ownership alike were as dedicated to their national team as their clubs. This is the era before Beckham’s superstardom, WAGs (as led by his wife Victoria), or Russian oligarchs and Mideast Sheik Yerboutis bought up clubs. In doing so, they debased the Three Lions and English football in general with money and materialism
Because you were a young boy and it meant everything to you. Now your priorities are different and it doesn't matter as much.. everyone's golden period is when they grew up mine is 96-02
Koeman should have been sent off. The freekick, a Dutch guy encroached - the guy was 4 metres away when it hit him! Koeman retaken freekick... after Ince encroachment... England hit woodwork twice You know it's really not your day
What a poor refereeing! A perfectly scored goal disallowed and two red cards not given! England very unlucky with hitting the post twice. A thrilling game to watch, though
A travesty of a refereeing performance. 1) Dutch goal disallowed even though three players are playing the scorer onside. 2) Koeman not sent off. 3) England's FK charged down by a player much closer than the maximum allowed ten yards. 4) The Dutch should have been given a penalty (though seeing as Koeman scored the resulting FK, justice perhaps).
This was just before I got into football, I never knew about that professional foul from R.Koeman.....and at 0-0 when England only needed a draw AND he then scored AND from a re-taken free-kick when England weren't allowed a clear penalty let alone allowed to re-take the free-kick when the Netherlands did the same thing with the wall.....and also that red card offence from E.Koeman on P.Parker etc....would've thought people would've brought all this to my intention before I unintentionally found it on RUclips like the Maradona hand goal 1986 was brought to my attention a long time ago etc... I know the Netherlands had a valid goal given as offside but it's fair to say if all decisions were given correctly It would've favoured England much more than the Netherlands.
Worst referee EVER !!!! 1- Frank Rijkaard's goal should have been given. He was 5 meters behind the line when the pass was made. 2- Ronald Koeman's foul was out of the penalty area, yet he rules it in. The linesman had to tell him otherwise. 3- Ronald Koeman had to be dismissed (red card) since he was the last man and Platt was facing the goalkeeper to score. 4- Edwin Koeman should have given a red card and a some jail time for that flying kick, yet he only receives a warning. 5- Wouters blocked Dorigo's free kick by putting himself 3 meters from the ball and the referee didn't sanction him, yet he does it when Ince blocks Koeman's free kick.
There hasn’t really been a big game between England and Holland for many years but during the 90’s it was a big rivalry! We loved it when we won 4-1 in euro96 but that was the last big game really because I don’t count the nations league. In England we were very angry about these two games in 93 and we wanted revenge and we got it in 96
his commentary was awesome on the Koeman free kick, 'again its Ronald koeman, again the problem is there, his going to flick one, his going to flick one', just superb, his capturing the drama and reading the action so well and not allowing his patriotism to get the best of him...
OK, he made a mistake but on the whole he was a legend behind the mic...and very fair as well to the dutch and the English...where did England go wrong in the early 1990's from the semi run of 1990?
I agree. He got a bad press in the fanzines at the time, but he was pretty engaging really. Hamburg are still looking for those 1980 European Cup winners medals he promised them though. ;)
The 1994 World Cup was the first one I saw. I remember asking my dad "Dad, where's England?" when we were watching the games together. He answered "My boy, England is the most overhyped and the most overrated nation in football". I learned one of the biggest truths of football that summer.
I remember this game, the time period and in hindsight that was not a bad English team and Graeme Taylor deserved more out this. They could have easily scored 4 goals against the Dutch. I think the bridge has been crossed and England is right up there today.
@@kisbie hear it ? Seaman should have seen it himself from 25 yards... myself aged 15 back then , Brian Moore and probably Stevie wonder saw Koeman was gonna flick it ...the only imbecile who didn't realize was David Seaman
In this day and age Koeman would have been sent off, then brought back on so the ref could send him off a second time, so blatant was that foul. That said we had no right to be in that world cup considering how bad we were.
Even in that day and age Koeman could have been sent off as well. Watch virtually any game in which he played; if there are more highlights than just the goals, you will probably see a dangerous challenge by Koeman. He committed some outrageous, blatant fouls and always got off lightly, I cannot understand why. Check out this video: ruclips.net/video/daxebPaaCCY/видео.html and watch his assault on Baggio at 6:17 and laughably he goes unpunished, while a teammate who fouls and lashes out at Schillaci seconds later is sent off- this shortly after Baggio scored from a free kick, which Koeman had conceded. Looking back at all the blatant, cynical and often vicious fouls he committed, it is impossible to understand how he got away with it.
I’m Scottish, but not here to wind anyone up. It’s when I see footage like this that I realise just how unlucky England have been over the years. Unreal!
@@tj2645 to be honest, Theo, I think England have an extremely technical side now. They will be a real force at the Euros. I just hope that they have an off day against Scotland 🤣

@@Fazzer77 I'd say so.Not result wise but really unlucky, especially considering Koeman shouldn't have been on the pitch when he scored after denying us a golden opportunity.
Cruel but Rikjaard was onside. As for the second half, Koeman should have walked, the Dutch no. 5 should have been sent off for the challenge on Parker and the free kick Koeman scored from wasn't a foul. And Merson hit the inside of the post!
ref said later that he didnt send him off as he was worried there would be a riot, they also brought in a new rule that last man foul is auto red after this incident
Taylor talking shait ..... Des Walker did not get a red card at Wembley pulling Overmars down and should have had red like Koeman should’ve. And Rijkaards goal was a clear onside goal, with three defenders still in front of him ....fact of the matter was that the Dutch side just had more individual class players on the pitch
14:33 the famous FIFA official, target of Taylor's anger on the sidelines in the second half, sheepishly and rather nervously walks past! To be fair to the poor guy, none of it was his fault.
As GT said FIFA made the rule change and left no discretion to the Ref. Showed he had lost the plot when he would not allow Dorigo’s free kick to be re-taken but was over Ince for same offence.
In the first game at Wembley England were 2-0 up when the Dutch sent their so called wolfman on to elbow gazza face in , then having taken out our playmaker Dutch equalised ,pure filthy tactics ,so no surprise they did the same in Holland
Remila Meziane I'm not being argumentative, but how is or was D.Berkamp "so underrated" as a footballer? His goal against Argentina during France 98 was officially voted the best goals scored during that World Cup finals due to sublime ball control. Take a look: ruclips.net/video/XsZkCFoqSBs/видео.html I remember him scoring two stunning goals against Leicester City @ the old Filbert Street, again stunning ball control, both contenders for goal of the season. D.Bergkamp was not underrated.
As a Holland die hard fan I could imagine as a 17th years teenager I would be histerical when Koeman and Bergkamp scored…too bad I missed this game when no live broadcast easily accessed anywhere online or on tv as it is now… I really miss watching Dutch team in this high quality with full of world class players….
😬, England were very unlucky in those two games! At the Wembley game Holland was blown away, until Jan Wouters made himself 'wide' against Gascoigne's cheekbone, and here Koeman definitely had to be sent off.. In the 90s Holland's qualifiying campaigns were almost as exciting as the tournaments.
Anybody besides me noticed that Holland did not have a true No.9 in this game compared to when they played at Wembley? Like, they were playing Ronald de Boer up front!!! What happened to Van Vossen and Bosman?????
I was in the stadium with a Dutch friend and sitting amongst the Dutch supporters. The referee has got to be the worst I've ever seen a disallowed Dutch goal and two red cards what a disgrace 😤 The irony of koeman not being sent off and then 5 minutes later scoring still makes me feel sick 😢
Both Koemans should have seen red. I have to say that I had forgotten about Erwin Koemans 'challenge' but he was lucky the referee had such a bad night.
@@kebabtank bang on you are. The second one by his shittier brother is worth two red cards. I remember watching it live as a fifteen year old and thinking that I am gutted but 'Taylor' was unlucky
The England bench was right - the refereeing in this game was disgraceful. Aside from Koeman's foul (that should have resulted in a red card and possibly a penalty), the ref allowed the Dutch to charge Dorigo's free-kick, but booked Ince when he did exactly the same thing at the other end a few minutes later. The Dutch were obviously the better team but it shouldn't cloud the fact England got well and truly reffed off the park.
Is it coincidence that this has popped up in my feed on the day of Graham Taylor's death? (Also, Rijkaard was onside. Didn't realise that at the time.)
I'm not English but a fan of the three lions. I'm still wondering what would happen if they would qualified for the 1994 finals. They would be a seeded team instead of Belgium, for sure
Let's just reacap: in a group containing England and Holland, Norway are group leaders and Woods has forgotten how to dive. All together now: "He's gonna flick one!" Norway -'No way', more like- your time has (evidently) come.
Pause at 5.33 Never seen offside like that. Rijkaard has THREE field players at at least two meters in front of him. An of course, Koeman had to be send off!
Here's one...ruclips.net/video/ff6sCtIijRA/видео.html He was so far on-side that the commentary team didn't realise for 6 minutes that it hadn't been awarded as a goal. The ball has travelled nearly 20 yards and Robertson still isn't past the defence.
A couple of days ago I watched France vs Bulgaria, also a deciding game for the group winner. Honestly, neither the French nor the English team deserved to qualify for the World cup which was later proven by the fact that both Bulgaria and the Netherlands went a rather long way in the US.

That's not a split second decision but a deliberation that was cowardly because he just didn't want to make a big call. Instead he didn't give a penalty and he didn't give the deserved and obvious red.
After Cruyff, the next best three Dutch players of all time are Bergkamp, van Basten and Rensenbrink
@@chrisearl4440 I would have it van Basten, Berkamp and Rensenbrink, but all three were brilliant.
marty dav and I would put Ruud Krol in at number 5. Another brilliant player!
Rijkaard is an amazing guy, not a word though he surely knew he wasn't offside.
Ik had the pleasure playing with him in Abcoude veteran team in Amsterdam the year before he signed as Barcelona coach.
Fantastic man on and off the pitch.
Not back then, but later after Rudi and Frank were in a Dutch butter commercial on Dutch tv they became great friends.
Seamans positioning at Koemans free kick is ridiculous.
Spot on, seaman left acres of room for Keoman...chronic positioning
It's awful, he was never attacked for it either..
From the first time I saw this i thought what the hell is he stood there for he’ll never make that ground up ridiculous
Was the thinking at the time, the keeper covers one side and the wall covers the other?
he gave him an open net basically
Still love watching this game and hearing the English piss and moan.
robby rensenbrink
For a country thats had so many talented players youve won surprisingly little.
eddie lasowsky I couldn't agree more.

Call it unlucky if ya like. Personally speaking i think the Dutch team shits itself in finals and pussies out ;)
*****
Yeah we invented the game, but that doesnt make us a great footballing nation.
Would love to watch this match in its entirety with the wonderful ITV commentary
Taylor never picked Chris Waddle. One of the most idiotic decisions by an international manager ever.
Yeah he picked Carlton Palmer of all people, Sinton played as well but where's Beardsley? Must've been injured, think Gazza was as well.
Koeman not getting sent off and it not being a penalty is the most bent thing I have ever seen in Football.
More bent than Henry's hand balls against Ireland in 2009?
And the other Koeman should've been sent off for the king fu kick on Parker
Frank was 2 metres onside when he scored
@@MrCrazyrob666 Did you know that the Irish FA put in complaint about the Handball , But IFA offerd the Irish 3 Million quid not to , because as Blatter said France would be a bigger name in the finals than Ireland
It was never a penalty foul started outside the box....but yes koeman should have seen red all day
Not an England fan by any means but how did Koeman stayed in the game after that is beyond unthinkable, red card all day
How was that clear goal from rijkaard disallowed?
I never get tired of watching this game, lol
Me too
As a Dutch guy I admit Ronald Koeman should have been sent off, but this just goes to show that some referees don't know what they're doing or how to "implement" the rules...
Definitely a red card.
PARTITA RUBATA IN TOTO! BASTARDI! ARBITRO ROTTO IN KULO
Any fair England fan DOES mention that. I have no bitterness about this game because of the Rijkaard disallowed goal.
Had totally forgotten about Bergkamp's goal. Glorious stuff
Wow, 90‘s Bergkamp was just too good , alomost every old matches I review now via internet he scored balls and had several threanteining chances.
Furthermore Koeman should have already been booked for the foul earlier in the video.
And if they hadn't appointed Gram Taylor as manager ...
It's absolutely unbelievable that a player of Bergkamp's quality didn't prove successful in Inter Milan. In the role he played in this game, he was unstoppable. England was lucky that he was more wasteful than normal. The pass for Rijkaard was sublime.
Yeah I don't understand that either. He could have had a hatrick in this game with a bit more shooting accuracy. Fantastic player.
They played defensively, that would stymie Bergkamps skills, isolate him and reduce passing options. That's how it didn't work out
@@nathanrobinson1099 yes same against Brasil Bergkamp has been isolated in 98
He felt not good in Italy. Then can't perform.
How come football back then seemed more important and serious than nowadays?
marky26marky less money involved of course, less ego but the atmosphere at the games was much less sanitised amongst many other things.

Koeman retaken freekick... after Ince encroachment...
England hit woodwork twice

Nie zapominaj o prawidłowym golu Rijkarda
What a poor refereeing! A perfectly scored goal disallowed and two red cards not given! England very unlucky with hitting the post twice. A thrilling game to watch, though
A travesty of a refereeing performance.
1) Dutch goal disallowed even though three players are playing the scorer onside.
2) Koeman not sent off.
3) England's FK charged down by a player much closer than the maximum allowed ten yards.
4) The Dutch should have been given a penalty (though seeing as Koeman scored the resulting FK, justice perhaps).
4) Still a wrong decision - wasn't a foul, Pallister made a perfectly good tackle.
@@r4h4al they don't care. An English player commited it lol

I remember most of this game but I'd forgotten that foul on Parker was disgraceful
Wow, 90‘s Bergkamp was just too good , alomost every old matches I review now via internet he scored balls and had several threanteining chances.
Tbf the 2nd goal was absolute class even if there was a cheeky handball in it.
Koeman should have been booked for foul against Ince too. Must admit forgot about that disallowed goal that wasn't offside.
5- Wouters blocked Dorigo's free kick by putting himself 3 meters from the ball and the referee didn't sanction him, yet he does it when Ince blocks Koeman's free kick.
maybe your right, but it doesnt matter, the dutch would have won anyway.
Bergkamps goal should've been disallowed also for a hand ball.
Awfull referee. Both Koemans had to be sent off. Rijkaard - the clearest goal of the game.
Ian Wright not starting for England in 1993 with his Arsenal form was criminal.
Goooner N4: he was injured for this game. He would have started otherwise.
It was a fun controversial game in a tough qualifying group.
There hasn’t really been a big game between England and Holland for many years but during the 90’s it was a big rivalry! We loved it when we won 4-1 in euro96 but that was the last big game really because I don’t count the nations league. In England we were very angry about these two games in 93 and we wanted revenge and we got it in 96
I could listen to Brian Moore read the phone book for hours.
his commentary was awesome on the Koeman free kick, 'again its Ronald koeman, again the problem is there, his going to flick one, his going to flick one', just superb, his capturing the drama and reading the action so well and not allowing his patriotism to get the best of him...
OK, he made a mistake but on the whole he was a legend behind the mic...and very fair as well to the dutch and the English...where did England go wrong in the early 1990's from the semi run of 1990?
Euro 1996 was a great tournament that England should have won, so I'd say they bounced back.
+Kailash Patel Graham Taylot
I learned one of the biggest truths of football that summer.
norway winning the group was what screwed it for england, meant only one or holland and england was going to qualify
I remember this game, the time period and in hindsight that was not a bad English team and Graeme Taylor deserved more out this. They could have easily scored 4 goals against the Dutch. I think the bridge has been crossed and England is right up there today.

I find it hard to believe that the officiating against Holland for both ties was this selectively incompetent to this degree out of coincidence.
Yeah the elbow on Gazza in the first game! OMG and the ref was looking straight at it!
Seamans position for the free kick was disgraceful
Unreal!

Both nations were declining in 92-94 post Lineker/Van Basten era though the Netherlands did pretty well in the USA
I'd still say two good teams. Basiaclly two semi final looking teams regressing to two QF esque teams. So still top top teams.

You forget that the Dutch also did quite well in France in 1998. There goes your declining theory!

Bergkamp has stunning fancy touch... so underrated...
Remila Meziane I'm not being argumentative, but how is or was D.Berkamp "so underrated" as a footballer? His goal against Argentina during France 98 was officially voted the best goals scored during that World Cup finals due to sublime ball control. Take a look:

I remember him scoring two stunning goals against Leicester City @ the old Filbert Street, again stunning ball control, both contenders for goal of the season. D.Bergkamp was not underrated.

Despite the fact that Koeman should never have been on the pitch at that stage...
So glad to see this 'charging down' a free kick nonsense is now gone! Can't believe it was ever accepted in the first place.
It always pissed me off.
I remember this match being in the military. A full mess cheering and going crazy after the Koeman goal. What a night that was. 🥳
