One of the strongest football memories as a kid was this Saravakos goal in Amsterdam. 25/3 is the National Day for Greece and this particular night is one of the most memorables in greek football.
@@robl6052 Of course its a compliment. Αgainst the best team at that time in Europe, in a pitch where stronger team than ours were annihilated, in a game that everyone would be happy with a descent loss, the team managed to win for 56 minutes and finally get a point. Keep in mind that Greek team before Rechangel arrives, in our pre-historic football era, had not so good results in general, except some games here and there. Yes, that was a night to remember my friend!
That Dutch team were incredible, I can still see them tearing England a new one in Germany 1988, Van Basten hat trick and they could have had six they were THAT good. One of my Ipswich Town heroes Arnold Muhren was in that Holland squad, in fact he set up van Basten's volley against Russia in the final. Brilliant side, shame they capitulated in the World cup 1990..........
@@andyreeve3880 Didnt win a game did they, three draws in the group stages and then the 2-1 defeat against Germany. 1990, England were so close..........
It was their hate for Germany that made them forget to play football.Vsn Breukelen en R. Koeman had been raging war in the dressing room and they behaved like idiots on the pitch. Even Rijkaard , normally a gentleman , forgot himself and spat on Voller . It was a True disgrace .And to think that K. and v B.were not even the best on their position ,Koeman was a terrible defender, too slow and never headed a Ball in his whole career.Van Breukelen was good but often had mistakes indulged by his ander issues.Maybe the best Oranje squad only got one ( europran) titel.Too little , too little.

Van basten didn’t even play because his ankle was destroyed He only played 3 full games for ac Milan before the euros No other player would have been called with his condition He went to play eventually with a rigid bandage on his ankle The rest is history Best striker in history by a mile No one come close to him in terms of number 9 role absolute majestic ❤
The rest is only history because the referee overlooked Van Basten was offside when Kieft scored his goal against Ireland. Had the referee paid attention the Netherlands would not have made it out of their group.
@@endthisnonsense7202 Another bitter Ireloser probably. MVB was coming back from yes, but was in no way interfering with play, didn't impede GK's vision whatsoever, a VAR check today would let this goal stand 100%. Cry harder son.
Got quite a surprise seeing the massive firework going off near the Cyprus goalie, ouch that negated all 8 goals that night, and the team had to play the game a month later when it was much colder.
I just had to ask Wikipedia about the circumstances of the home match(es) against Cyprus and this is the answer: "The Netherlands v Cyprus match originally finished as an 8-0 win for the Netherlands, but the match was marred by crowd violence after Cyprus goalkeeper Andreas Charitou was hit by a firework. Charitou was injured and had to be replaced, and the Cyprus players left the field in protest and refused to play. Eventually after discussion between referee Roger Philippi, UEFA observer Alfred Delcourt and team officials, the Cyprus players agreed in a written statement to finish the match, though under protest. The result was later annulled by UEFA, and the match forfeited to Cyprus with 2-0. After the appeal from the Netherlands the match was ordered to be replayed behind closed doors, which took place on 9 December 1987."
OF COURSE , THEY LOST THE OPENING GROUP MATCH 1 - 0 TO THE USSR , BUT STILL WON THE COMPETITION A BUG BEAR OF MINE , AS THIS HAPPENS IN THE WORLD CUP MORE OFTEN THAN NOT DO AWAY WITH SECOND PLACE TEAMS GOING THROUGH AND WINNING WEST GERMANY 54 , WEST GERMANY 74 , ARGENTINA 78 , SPAIN 2010 , SPAIN WOMEN 2023 , SOUTH AFRICA RUGBY 2023 , ETC , ETC
is it me or do the football fields look smaller than what they are now? maybe it's just the camera or something. anyone knows if there is a difference?
I think it is the camera angle, most of them were much lower back then, and some stadium pitches remain the same today and the pitches seem bigger with higher cameras
By today's woke asf rules and regulations, Netherlands vs Cyprus would never have gotten a reply and the Dutch got a lengthy ban. But that bomb incident was yet another in a long list of absolutely atrocious incidents that happened in the 70s and 80s, incidents you now only see in some low-ranked competition like Turkey or Serbia, but even there it's very infrequent. Fortunately for the Dutch, they could reply, and they did qualify, and the rest is history. It is just incredibly said that this Dutch side was only able to do this at one major tournament when they could and maybe should've won at least two Euro's and or one or two World Cups.
A brilliant Netherlands side, they had been threatening since 1985 for qualifying really. They could and should have lost or drawn to Ireland in 1988, that wouod have knocked them out then, pure and simple. They were very lucky to beat a Soviet side in the Euro ' 88 Final. The Soviets had a much better team than the dutch, but the touch had better individuals, which won the day. Dutch side of individuals for sure, but not a great team, why so, typical Dutch, too opinionated, too egotistical and too arrogant, too individualistic is the reason they fell apart in 1990, they got too big for their boots. That's a statement of fact. Michels was one of the greatest coaches of all time. They loved very much. They played for him because of what he did for Dutch football since 1974, and he reinvented the game on Total football.
If the Dutch weren’t that great of a “team” but rather individually, that total football they played wouldn’t even be possible if they weren’t a “team”. The fact 1990 was a farce, was because everyone wanted Cruyff as the head coach, but it became leo beenhakker, wich divided the team. Michels and Cruyff weren’t friends, and michels had a saying in who became headcoach in 1990. and he choose beenhakker.
@leobeenplakker6505 That's exactly my point, the individualistic ditch ego's always come to the fore at some stage, and is always their ruination. The Total football of 1988, was not total football at all, as compared to 1974. The Dutch were just a couple of minutes away from being relegated by my own Ireland in the group stage in Gelsenkirchen, but the flukiest goal ever. So they were not so invincible at all. Could have also lost to Wedt Germany in the semi final. Van Basten's penalty was no penalty at all. Look back at that video. He was even surprised to get that decision himself.
I agree with manynof your comments, winning a tournement involves much more luck than we want to admit. But its not only true for the Dutch 88 team, also because history gets rewritten by the winner :). Argentina was actually pretty terrible in the last world cup, and were very lucky to win it (but I dont mind, Messi deserves a world cup :)). I just saw all the highlights of 2010, and noticed that Spain played pretty horrible throughout the tournement, and was pretty lucky to reach the final, as well as Holland (especially in their match against Brazil). Same goes for many winners ;)
@mmartijn78 Clearly, you don't have a clue at all about 1988 or before that. The Soviets had a superior team than the Dutch had in 1988, and the Dutch were better individually. Why is this? The Dutch should have been knocked out by us, the Irish, a draw, and the Dutch were eliminated. On the other hand, the Soviets won all of their matches comprehensively and consistently, except when it really mattered in the final against the Dutch. Did you watch the Soviets style of play in the World Cup in Mexico 1986? Only two years earlier. They were the second most exciting team after Denmark in that competition. And where was the Dutch in 1986? They didn't even qualify. The Soviet team was mostly Ukrainian with a particular style of play with ferocious long-range shooting. That was unique. Dynamo Kiev Cup Winner's Cup winners in 1986. The USSR was the dominant team at the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988. They won the gold medal. Do your research and learn your history.
