in Nederland we call this the Wijnstekers generation. 6 years of misery ending in the renewal of the dutch team resulting in triumph (without Wijnstekers of course) in 1988
Actually Holland almost did it with 1986WC. Belgium wasn't better on that playoff even although they reached semi-final where they were only stopped by Maradona. I guess red card on the first playoff game meant a lot for the overall result.
Actually there were 3 generations in this time (together): the remnants of the 70s like Krol; the Wijnsteekers generation proper with Tahamata, Kist, vd Korput,...; those who had their prime at the dutch comeback 88, with v. Basten, Kieft, v. Breukelen,...
in qualification group they were with France and Belgium..they only need a draw against France in their last match...they were lost and absent in Spain.
O grupo era bem difícil, mas a Holanda poderia ter um desempenho melhor. Tempo difíceis para o futebol holandês que iria ressurgir com glorias na Euro 1988.
Pity some of the footage was poor, some great games Holland v Ireland and France v Holland. Also a very tough group, one out of France or Holland should have been moved to another group.
1980-1986 were not good years. At first our players were no longer in their prime or just not good enough. Later our players were top players but we're too young.
There was a fall in quality in the Dutch national team between Cruyff, Neeskens, Krol, Van Hanegam, Rensenbrink and Van Basten, Koeman , Gullit , Rijkaard, Vanenburg, the best players in the early 80s were Frans Thijjsen, Arnold Muhren and Neeskens but he rarely played international football then
If there ever was a group of death that was the one! All of the top 4 deserved to be at the WC and were stronger and certainly more exciting to watch than half of the teams that qualified only because they had it easier in qualifiers. Remember Austria, N. Ireland, Hungary, Czechs… strong but boring Germans, Spain, Poland, USSR… I was so looking forward to see perhaps one last time the remnants of the Cruijff generation in action
Boring Germans? They had a top team. One of the best ever. If Schuster hadn't been absent, they would have been even stronger. But of course, it wasn't a team that shone like Brazil - which by the way deserved to win the WC 82. What kind of team and football was that. But unfortunately football is and will remain a result sport.

I agree. They seemed to have perfectly good goals disallowed in Paris and Brussels. 1978 was similar. Probably the best native sides the Irish ever had, and never played in a senior tournament. Awful really that Brady and all the rest could be so poorly treated. But what a team! Brady, Stapleton, Heighway, Giles, Daly, O'Leary. All great players.
@ maybe... Holland lost a couple of easy games at the beginning of 1986 campaign, then the team got stronger, but the lost points lead them to the play offs.
After 1974 he promised his wife would help Holland qualify but not play at a major tournament (with exception of 1976 because it was such a small tournament). And I believe in 1978 he decided not play for Holland ever again.
@@johncahalane7327 France was strong but lucky they got Austria instead of W.Germany in the 2nd stage. England got them instead, and went home on goal difference without losing a game. That's how they reached the semifinals.
@@pato2200 indeed, in those times, no ranking, geography was a factor on drawing lots : 74, 78 & 82 were like that. Curiously, never was W. Germany (and Germany) in same WC qualifying group as Belgium.

Perhaps this Holland's team was transitional, but they lost euro '84 and Mundial '86 mainly because of bad luck
Nonsense...luck does not exist..only goals counts...

In Washington playing for Diplomats ???? Very Rough Group phase with France,Ireland Republic and 1980 Euro Runner up Belgium.
So basically Holland lost their bid when they only got 1 point against the Irish.
