Tbh, I wasn't surprised because I tested my samsung, and I know that the moment I stop touching the screen it drops the HZ from 120 to whatever is the content like watching YT to 24hz, that's do to the LTPO display, but fixed 120hz screens surely gonna have some real difference, as long as you're screen is LTPO there's no need for disabling the high HZ

LTPO and adaptive refresh I guess is doing it's job even when 60Hz is enabled

I have a Fold 5 and the refresh rate goes down to 24hz always whether you have activated 60hz or 120hz. I am sure it is the same on S24U, too. This should not be the explanation.

In real 120fps environment if you do the same test, the difference will be bigger. Here basically just because of the LTPO, all video runned on 60Hz at max, so the 120Hz settings was ignored, because the content never reached the 120fps.. all video platform limited the videos to 60fps, and when your CPU only calculating 60 different frames in each sec (so 60fps), you only need to refresh the screen 60 times in each sec (so 60Hz), and this is exactly what the built-in LTPO do, limiting the screen refresh if the content has lower fps.
So if you are manually scrolling a lot, that can generate 120fps, and can deffinetly use more battery, but to test the 120Hz settings with 60fps limited content, it's not a great idea at all.

  • @sahansenevirathne
    @sahansenevirathne 9 месяцев назад +45

I mean, 120hz or 60hz will only get activated when you touch the screen scrolling or when something on the screen has 120fps. In case of yt and tik tok vids. They are pretty much 30fps hence 30hz mostly. So no big difference

As someone who has done countless such tests on my S22 ultra, its not the 60hz mode that will save your battery, its the battery saver option toggled on. It creates no noticeable difference in normal phone usage as the chip is powerful enough to run on 70% capacity and if you got good 4g coverage or wifi, you don't need the 5g support you get without the battery saver mode. It helps me get at least another extra half a day of normal occassional usage out of the phone and conserves the battery for the future. I still have the f62 model from samsung, with that behemoth 6800 mah battery, it used to last 2.5-3 days of full usage with this trick

I think there is something being overlooked in these tests. When you switch to standard the screen will remain at 60 HZ but fir the adaptive, the screen goes down to 24 HZ or lower depending on the phone. So whenever you put the tests like on tiktok and it is on auto scroll, ideally the screen on adaptive refresh rate will be lower than 120 hz because it only switches to 120 hz when therevis touch input. So if you want the test between 60 and 120 hz to be more accurate, you will have to manually scroll with your hand so that it emulates like a real person would and you will surely end up seeing different results. If you want to test whether what am saying is accurate, go to developer options and toggle on the window to see the current screen refresh rate.

Very nice video the last gen of ltpo displays make this possible, for example in my s22 ultra the screen resolution does not affect the battery as you show in your first video but the 120hzr decreases the battery duration significantly because the first ltpo display samsung used wasn't as efficient as the latest models and the processor helps as well, so it appies for the s23 and s24 but not for the s22

This is not "no wifi" test. iPhone have WiFi on, it is just disconnected from AP. To turn off wifi on an iPhone you need to go to setttings or make desktop shortcut for it. The same problem was in S24 vs iP 15 vs Pixel 8 test. And probably all other with "no wifi" or "no LTE" - LTE/data trasfer on an iPhone only limited on "off". To turn it off properly you need to go to settings.
And I don;t see what about GPS - in Android it is toggle on a quick settings, on an iPhone only in settings.

@@LoverOfTech But still consumes power to scan wifi networks. I have a shortcut to turn off wifi for good and in this way it should be checked (in my opinion).
BTW: I'm not sure if 120 Hz is used during YT playback, instagram or tiktok movies or camera recording. Higher refresh is probably adaptive and 120 Hz works only while scrolling page in a browser or switching movie on tiktok. Movies are 30 fps or 60 fps in general, so in this moment smartphones probably use 60 Hz refresh. You can check (if I'm right) by turn on "show refresh rate" in developer options in Android. I don't know if there is any way do dispaly this number on an iPhone.

My previous S23U and vanilla S23 used to give me 6 hours and 3.75 hour SOT respectively, same setup. iphone 15 pro was just a day of usage. S24U is a full workday. S23U used to be a day and a half.

    Your test has a FLAW.
Just tested Auto scroll on tiktok. On my s24 Ultra. It keeps screen at 60hz. And only goes up to 120 when you manually touch screen.
Use show refresh option to see.
So even in 120HZ tiktok will only stay at 60 in autoscroll. Due to no finger movement being detected.
So in your tiktok test for 120HZ, the screen always stayed at 60Hz since you was not manually scrolling.

You should have followed some points in the battery test The first point of the Samsung screen is 830 nits, which is more than the iPhone, you should have equalized all the phones with the nit meter. The second point is that Samsung is a tenth of an inch larger than the iPhone, which affects battery consumption The third point is that the resolution of the Samsung screen is 2K, but for the iPhone 1.5K, you should have set it to Full HD Plus for a more fair test.

Oh my God! WTF are people thanking you for? That's a horrible test! Phones didn't even get the chance to run at 120hz for more than 5 seconds. You didn't even make a scroll test. You're just leaving them running applications that would make the LTPO tech lower the FPS to 60hz anyway. If the displays are not actually running at 120hz, there's no reason to make a comparision to begin with.
