Great job Scot. You can definitely rest easier at night now. The only thing I have seen about wood stoves (fireplaces) is from Mary Poppins. Lol. No and little things about the amount of moisture left in the wood before burning it. Really seasoned wood. Anyway it is so great to have someone with many talents to determine where a potential problem is and eliminate it. You are a ten out of ten Scot. Olivia is a fantastic, talented person and a keeper too! What a great family! God Bless!!
Those flu fires aren't any kind of joke
Good video. Important reminder. Thank you!
Miss you guys!!
You should consider replacing it with a masonry stove. No more creosote issues, burn 1/2 the amount of wood, and much more comfortable.
Cost prohibitive. Did you see how tall my ceiling is?????
Good job cleaning the flue from the bottom. Maybe need to research the damper some more as it does help control the rate of burn. But not working has allowed the flue pipe to cool too much leading to more creosote.
Absolutely. I definitely did a ton of research and even consulted with a good friend who manages a local stove shop who confirmed that a dual stage burn stove does not need a damper. I can tell you the stove has never burned as well as it is now with that damper gone! I'm getting a 6 hr burn out of my wood now! Never got more than 4 hrs or so... Thx for watching!
Be safe
Myself i would keep the damper.
But relocate higher up the pipe. About as far up as you can safely reach.
Having a 2nd way to control that long of a pipe is a good thing.
.
I would consider one of those stove pipe box heat exchangers to be on the hot side of the damper. It gets to temp and kicks a fan on.
.
My record is 3 gallons of junk out of a 6" 12' pipe. Burning rather wet soft wood.
It runs up a chimney in a stainless liner. So risk of fire is minimal, if any.
.
You don't have a chimney to protect things, so yeah fire risk is quite real.
Totally. I plan on upgrading that pipe to triple wall pipe
The couple times i cleaned mine i just pulled the entire stack, cleaned em outside, then reinstalled. Stay off the roof, just pull the stack.
I bet that was a bit of a messy job eh Dave? And I have a 16' ceiling which makes it a bit of a challenge for me. But not a bad idea for someone that has a shorter ceiling.... Miss you guys.
@Modern Mountain Living Actually we ended up in Nevada. Found a peice of property out here in Nye County that suits our needs well. beard lookin good!
hi if you burn spud peelings you not get soot
Well lady, THERE'S your problem! We've had Fisher heaters and NEVER a damper. If you have a good stove and a tight pipe, the dampers on the stove itself will regulate everything. Triple-wall pipe will keep creosote from building up by keeping the smoke HOT! BLESSINGS!
Thx Lewie. you are totally right! I plan on upgrading to triple wall pipe in the future and this will help to keep creosote buildup down even more! Our friends that had a flue fire had an older stove with just a box and no secondary burn chamber so a damper was absolutely necessary but they still had the fire! It's really crazy to see how much better this stove works now!!
@@HiddenValleyHomestead I've seen the triple wall pipe just through the roof so you could get all the heat off the pipe in the house but triple wall inside the house isn't a bad idea. As long as the smoke is hot, it won't stick. Without the obstruction, you've got a brand new heater! YAAY! NOW you can see what it'll REALLY do!
If ou can contact the stove manufacturer, see what they recommend and follow that advice.
I spoke with a local stove shop manager who is very familiar with this brand and confirmed my research that a damper isn't necessary.
@@HiddenValleyHomestead This video reminds me of the HVAC contractor who used to clean chimneys out by starting a chimney fire and listen to the sound, as the sound got louder, he would take a spray bottle with water and spray into the chimney in order to govern the size and intensity of the chimney fire which burned out the creosote. Those were the days, and only in North Idaho.
So did you take the damper completely out now? Or just clean it and reassemble it?
I have a built in damper and a pipe damper both.
I’ve been told by a lot of old timers that if you throw an aluminum can in the fire every month, it will burn up any creosote.
Seems to work pretty good so far.👍
Yes. I took it out! I gotta do a follow up.
And the aluminum can does indeed work! Been doing that too.. but now that the stove is burning more efficiently I'm not sure I'll need to!
@Modern Mountain Living I've burned up a few dozen over the winter and it seems to help. Can't quantify it very well but haven't had any issues...except this stupid damper thing....LOL
What is your fire wood type?
I'm burning tamarack sir. And now am getting a 6 hr burn out of a packed stove where I never got more than about 4 hrs! Crazy how much more efficient the stove is!
I'm going to gess if you have become acustom to the amount if wood used per week with the damper closed.
With it out it there, in a week's time you will know your going through mabe 5% more wood now.
.
That's my ballpark gess.
Believe it or not we are actually going through LESS wood! I'm getting a 6 hr burn out of a packed stove where before I was only getting about a 4 hr burn! And the heat emitted is hotter! It's crazy. I'm gonna have to do a follow up to this!
@@HiddenValleyHomestead interesting..
Just get rid of the damper. You have a baffle. Also, wear gloves and a respirator even with the vac running. Cancer sucks.
You're right! Next time I will add that in!
Don't risk your life because you do NO good service on your oven. That's not worth
You're funny. The chimney sweeps guys use the same cleaning kit! Why would you say this? Don't change your own oil in your car cuz you could kill yourself when the engine blows up. Right.
