You can see this kind of thing in actors who played the same role for a long time. My absolute favorite example is Jeremy Jordan whenever he sings Santa Fe. He immediately slips back into being Jack. It's pretty cool to see.
He's also doing ticks that most won't notice. I suffer from social anxiety and noticed his fingers fiddling and him adjusting the bottom of his shirt a few times. That's what we do we're uncomfortable around people so we'll fidgit with whatever we can to take our mind off of it.
Fun Fact: Alex Lacamiore actually has a hearing disorder (I think he can't hear high pitches or something like that) and he still manages to orchestrate all of these plays. Lacky Lac is so awesome!!!
The "when your falling in a forest and there's nobody around." Being repeated over and over and over again. Fun fact: That's exactly what anxiety sounds like.
Olivia Minchello Not very many people who don't experience anxiety do, but for somebody who has suffered from moderate to severe anxiety for about 12+ years, I totally get it.
HiMyNameisPeter yes. When I heard this song I loved that that part so perfectly encapsulated that anxious feeling of running thoughts in your head. The writers are geniuses.
See I don't even get this, because me feeling my pain is absolutely validating enough. Don't understand the idea that I need to be noticed to be a valid human being.
Love Ben Platt's performance but... am I the only one wondering how the hell Alex Lacamoire has time to orchestrate every single amazing show that is on broadway??
IAN!!! The fact that I randomly come across one of your comments. I totally agree with you though haha That's why I am obsessed with the music from this show!!
This is more mid and late 2000s pop than mid/late 2010s pop because modern pop is more computers and auto tune than natural voices and actual instruments
I mean probably, he's played the character for such a long time, and that's how he usually does the song :P Although it's not all that, Ben Platt does a lot of physicalization with his singing. When he's doing riffs, trills, or moments where there's a lot of variation in his notes he tends to make motions that 'help' him with it or represent what he's doing. And more than that, high notes upon other things he does the same. He moves his fingers rapidly, lifts his knees, leans back, and what not. A lot of it may also be just naturally him.
i think it's incredible that he can't preform the song without doing evans ticks and little fidget, he really connects to the character when he preforms the music from the show i love him!!!💞
He is a perfect Evan Hansen lol even outside the theatre... His sweat, neck veins, looking like struggling with high notes, blank and confused expression dammmn
I think it's his anxiety pumping through his body. Ever since he got the role of being Evan, it became worse. He constantly bit his nails, hunched his shoulders, and other nervous ticks. He is always nervous even in interviews, either he talks too fast, or sweats rapidly. I'm just glad he got through it and became strong. I definitely idolize this man in every way possible.
HE KEEPS THINKING ABOUT HIS HANDS SWEATING AND IT MAKES THEM SWEATIER BECAUSE HE WAS THINKING ABOUT THEM BEING SWEATY SO HE PUT THEM UNDER THE HAND DRYER BUT THAT DIDN'T MAKE THEM LESS SWEATY IT JUST MADE THEM REALLY HOT NOW AS WELL.
Sometimes I wonder if Ben is fed up with singing this song because he's sung it on so many interviews, at so many press events and 8 shows a week! But he stil sounds amazing singing it!
It’s actually his favorite one to perform. He loves how everyone embraces it and it really sets the mood of the rest of the play and gets things rolling and he loves that him performing it is what brings a lot of people to the show. He talked about it in an interview.
I love how, even if he's not supposed to be playing the part, you can perfectly see how he keeps staying in the character. Great job Ben. Such a wonderful performance
@DuckHunt(AxelRoxasXion) Yes, he goes on theraphy because of his anxiety. It became worse when he got the role, he constantly bit his nails and hunched his shoulders and had other nervous ticks. I'm just glad he took the role in the first place and became strong to give us all a wonderful lesson in the form of a musical. I definitely idolize this man in every way possible.

I love this song; I love this musical (I flew out to NYC to see it Off-Broadway last spring). And Ben Platt is one of my favorite actors. Such a tremendous performance.
I think he was actively trying not to do as many of Evan Hansen’s nervous tics for this performance, but they still slip out on certain runs and on certain lines, because for him, the character is baked into this song (and likely every song from the show). He can’t help but BE Evan Hansen when performing this. What a great performer!
My wife and I saw Ben Platt in Dear Evan Hansen last Sunday (Oct. 22, 2017). Words fail to describe the immensity of this guy's talent. He has shattered all previous standards of excellence in theater performance for me. His portrayal of the Evan Hansen character was so visceral and palpable, he made the audience laugh and cry throughout the entire show. His interpretation of Pasek and Paul's music was beyond perfection. Where does he get that voice from? He scaled the high notes with controlled intensity and explosiveness that still sounded beautifully melodic. His falsetto is like raspy butter. And his vibrato is divine. Just this song shows why Ben won the Tony Award. He is brilliant. A brilliant singer and a brilliant actor. I would love to meet him and tell him that.

Dorian Crimmins it's easier to work up instead of just hitting it.

Ben Platt is literally everything

true. I was just thinking the same. Gotta love love love him though :))
If he was able to perform this incredibly difficult song without any mistakes then he could not be human. So I agree I like the title fumbles is works well with the song. Part of me wonders if the "mistakes" are part of it so almost bring the theme of anxiety and imperfection to the music as well.

LYRICS
I've learned to slam on the brake
Before I even turn the key
Before I make the mistake
Before I lead with the worst of me
Give them no reason to stare
No slipping up if you slip away
So I got nothing to share
No, I got nothing to say
Step out, step out of the sun
If you keep getting burned
Step out, step out of the sun
Because you've learned, because you've learned
On the outside, always looking in
Will I ever be more than I've always been?
'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass
I'm waving through a window
I try to speak, but nobody can hear
So I wait around for an answer to appear
While I'm watch, watch, watching people pass
I'm waving through a window, oh
Can anybody see, is anybody waving back at me?
We start with stars in our eyes
We start believing that we belong
But every sun doesn't rise
And no one tells you where you went wrong
Step out, step out of the sun
If you keep getting burned
Step out, step out of the sun
Because you've learned, because you've learned
On the outside, always looking in
Will I ever be more than I've always been?
'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass
Waving through a window
I try to speak, but nobody can hear
So I wait around for an answer to appear
While I'm watch, watch, watching people pass
Waving through a window, oh
Can anybody see, is anybody waving?
When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around
Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound?
When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around
Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound?
When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around
Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound?
When you're falling in a forest and there's nobody around
Do you ever really crash, or even make a sound?
Did I even make a sound?
Did I even make a sound?
It's like I never made a sound
Will I ever make a sound?
On the outside, always looking in
Will I ever be more than I've always been?
'Cause I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass
Waving through a window
I try to speak, but nobody can hear
So I wait around for an answer to appear
While I'm watch, watch, watching people pass
Waving through a window, oh

You are so brilliant Ben Platt. Thank you for sharing your vulnerability.
Even after more than a year and a half since knowing DEH, i still get goosebumps whenever Ben does the note drop from the high "waving" at the end. that's definitely talent and hardwork working together.
Gotta LOVE LOVE LOVE the one and only Mr. Alex Lacamoire! :)
