    • @donellmuniz590
      @donellmuniz590 4 года назад +5

      It's actually not a mid-block, it's a bona fide big block, with unfortunately small bores (usually 4.0 to 4.05), except for the 428 (4.13) and 427 (4.23, if I remember right). The only "mid block" Fords are the 351M (an unholy 400 block with a 351 crank) and 400. They're really just tall deck, 2V Clevelands.

    • @donellmuniz590
      @donellmuniz590 4 года назад

      @@Cuttyman9 I've seen several 434-ish FEs on tv, You Tube, magazines, etc. That's a darned good size. A 427 block with 428 crank makes a 454, but good luck finding a 427 block (for under 2 grand). Beyond 434, finding big enough heads would be an issue, but that's what boost is for, lol.

    • @Cuttyman9
      @Cuttyman9 4 года назад +1

      Donell Muniz compared to a 385 series it’s a mid block. Windsor’s can get to 418 on a stock block.
      The 385 series can be brought all the way out to 555 without an aftermarket block so 434 isn’t anything special but due to its large architecture it’s not really small but it’s also not really big.

    He raced Pro Gas 8.90 index at Sacramento Raceway back in the early 80's.
    The engine was a 460 with iron 429 Cobra jet heads.
    He copied what was being done to some 351 Clevland heads and machined off the exhaust ports then raised the exhaust ports with an aluminum plate.
    His Mustang was on the front cover of many car magazines.
    The headlines were something like "it runs 8.90's on a single 4 barrel."
    He ran a Lenco transmission. On the Ford 460 forum he said he thought it could turn an 8.50.

    Then area rule the combustion chamber.
    Or use the groove method of Ben Alameda:)
    The groove in the combustion chamber makes sure the fuel air charge in the quench pad section is ignited.
    Making sure the entire charge is ignited.

    I Love the 429-460 FORD Engines. Gotta 1986 Mustang I've since 1994 was an original 5.0 LX, Has seen a few different Engine Combos. First up was a Mild Build Up of a 1969 351 Windsor, went High 12,s Then i built a 1972 351 Cleveland, still on the Mild Side, Hyd. Cam, Ported Australian Heads, went Mid to High 11,s Now it has a 521 Stroked 460, Going Low to Mid Nines, N/A through a 1000 cfm Carburetor, Mild Solid Roller, Out of the Box Trickflow Street/Strip Heads on 275/60 Drag Radials. Engine was built about 10 years ago. I Love the Low End Torque the Big Block FORD Produces. My Car will Always be BBF Powered, Don't want to Buy another set of Headers, Last set for the Big Block were little over $1,100, Kooks Stainless Steel, the Fit of the Big Block is Very Good in the Fox Body Mustangs. Actually fits Better than the Cleveland. And actually Lost just over 100 lbs. Over the Cleveland Swap, Cleveland had Iron Heads. When i did the Big Block Swap, Also upgraded the Front and Rear Suspension with UPR Chromemoly Rear Adjustable Control Arms, Rear Anti-Roll Bar, Front Tubular K-Member, Control Arms, Coil Over Shocks. And the Big Block has Aluminum Heads, the Cleveland had Iron Heads. Like i said the Big Block has Incredible Torque. I'm also a Big Cleveland Fan, i do miss the High Winding, High RPM, Cleveland. Also the 429-460 Engines have an Incredibly Strong Foundation to start with. One thing is for certain, You will Never see a LS, Small, or Big Block Chevy Under the Hood of my Mustang. Had it since 1994, and Don't plan on getting rid of it any time soon. You can make a Big Block FORD compete against any Big Block Chevy anytime, might just have to Spend a Little More Money to do so, but it's Well worth it. I'm Loving my 521 Stroked 460. Shifting it at 7,000 RPM With my Built C-4. Like i said I'm a Big FORD Guy. The Only thing that's gonna upset me is that I'm on the Verge of putting a Powerglide in it. The 2-Speed is gonna help me getting off the Line with the Drag Radials, and also the Powerglide can be built to handle a Bunch more Power. Been thinking about doing a Large Single Turbo for a Few Years now, when Funds Become Available. I'm really liking the Garrett GTX5533R in the 94mm or 98mm Size. Or the Garrett GTX5544R in 102mm or 106mm. Most likely be going 102mm or 106mm. But that will be in the Future. How About strapping a Big Single Turbo on this 557 c.i. Beast that you Built Up in this Video ???

    Nice test although I also was surprised that the tunnel ram didn’t pick up more. No way the extra cost (manifold, extra carb, fuel lines, linkage) plus tuning would justify such a small gain. If I spent the $ to perform this upgrade and only picked up ~30 HP I would not be a happy camper.

    I LOVE tunnel rams! I have taken two bolt blocks and made them 4 bolt splayed. There are cap kits just for that...for Chevies anyway. I had to do a little machining and honeing, but it took really good power.

    Maybe the difference between the hp curves comparing the two tunnel rammed setups was the cam difference and the Wilson work on chevy manifold ?
    Probably be fun ( and expensive ) to try a cam grind on the ford to match the chevy and send the tunnel ram ( and heads if they don't have that head data) and then see if they are much closer in power curves. I was really surprised the tunnel ram didn't make more difference from 4500 to 6k.
    Great work as usual- always pick up something.
    Wish i could pick your brain on the q16 since you used it on the chevy, also wondering if you used it with the Ford.
    We tried at test & tune without nearly as good of luck.

    Very cool. I’m thinking another point or point and a half compression and 10 degrees more duration on the cam would’ve yielded that 4 digit power n/a. I’d love to see more big hp n/a sbf and bbf combos.

  • @BearFulmer
    @BearFulmer 4 года назад +3

    nice combo, great effects, I have never owned a big block, but I want my first one to be one of those 632's i see in the magazines, seems like a good deal for a big engine then boost it.

      Making the same fair build the 460 Ford will put out more hp and torque than a 454 c every time. Remember the torque numbers are the real power numbers.

      Might be possible but you would have to take a ton of timing out of it to the point where you would you lose a lot of power. Probably would also run hotter but that probably wouldn’t be an issue in a boat.

    BMW made a 1.5 liter 4 cylinder engine that put out 1400hp back in the early 80's for F1 racing. The block was from a regular car engine back in 1961 the M10.

    If you had put a 1.8 ratio rocker on the exhaust on the 557 it would have made around 910hp with the single carb. Comp came suck with their backwards lift split

    One of these would be such a cool motor to put in a hard top Lincoln Continental with an intake and carb or intake and 4150 style TB to fit under the hood. Certainly not a max effort high HP style build but built for low end HP and cruising power.

How would i am accomplish that for a 2nd gen camaro that is my momma's. Never mind Thanks Holdener! i am just watched the video! hahahahahhah Well i am keeping the cubic inch though at 460 ish cubes, maybe a large overbore. LOL very fun video! Thanks. P.S. Also looking at the 400M.

    Take the 2x4 carb lid off the tunnel ram and make a solid flat one for it. Then cut a hole in the front and bolt on a throttle body. Then add an F3 progharger!

    I'd love to see a twin turbo 429 BBF with good heads. See what it can do on pump gas for the power lovers who aren't going to the track and then with race gas for the strip guys. Something about the 429 with its huge bore and short stroke that just makes me smile.
