Old Pueblo Coin
It's not King George slaying the Dragon,it's St. George, England's patron saint. He was beheaded by Diocletian in 303AD for not renouncing his Christianity.During the First Crusades soldiers saw visions of him fighting by their side. The tale of the dragon goes he came upon a village where a dragon was killing people and terrorizing the village,a princess was to be sacrificed to save everyone else.St George killed the dragon and saved the princess.King Edward III made him patron saint in 1350.The first gold Sovs began in 1817.There were no gold Sovs produced during Elizabeth's II's coronation year in 1953.The rarest gold Sovs are 1819,only 3574 minted,10 known to exist today. The earliest depiction of St George killing the Dragon appeared on 16th century Slovakian talers
I knew it was St. George and not King George, but I didn't know anything else. Thanks for all the neat facts and background.

Epic
You missed a mintmark. “I” for the Bombay mint in India. 😁
Hi, Ben. I hope they put some pants on him when they mint coins for King Chuck. I sure don't want to see him Down Under! *TYU*
It's good that Ben is educating American collectors. "Foreign" gold is generally a better buy than local bullion, premium-wise.
Hello Coin Geek,
I have one 1925 that has a ST marking behind the horses rear legs, would you know what that it stands for ? Thanks
Great class Professor.
I sold my Sovereign gold halves and full when AMPEX had such a high buy back premium because they were flat out of gold and silver about 18 months ago. I am buying Austrian Ducats because they’re the lowest price on most any gold, coins or bullion. At nearly 23 K gold fineness, I’ve been lucky to have two sellers, Liberty and JM Bullion run sales on ducats.
Eh, I see the ”C” mintmark on the first Half-Sovereign you showed, but exactly where was it struck - Toronto or Montreal🇨🇦 ? 🤔 Ottawa be Ben, ”The Coin Geek’s”🤓 RUclips name. 😲😳😬 🤣😂🤣
At ease, sir - and thank you !
Now I need to have a look the next time I see a sovereign. Maybe I'll get lucky. Thanks!
Some of the Sydney Sovs get very expensive very fast , like the 1920s.
The Canadain Sov is a great coin the any other mint issue more sovs in the average year then the whole ottawa series, there is also I for india (1918 only but still more then the whole Canadian series )
Sovereigns come in quarters 2g, halves 4g, full 8g, double 16g and the star of the show Quintuple 40 grams. ✅🇬🇧
Sovereigns are cool, Crowns are very interesting too.
Thanks for sharing and explaining. 👍
“His horse has abs”😂😂
Love your videos and great insight, instruction, and general wisdom that you freely share. I’m new to the hobby and I have been wanting to ask a question about coin grading? I’ve been doing a little research on coin grading companies and wondered what your thoughts are about IGC? Thank you for all you do? Bob
CC sovereigns
You got to get a Cal cutta
Duuuude I was just posting my first Sovereign for sale and was reading up on their mint marks! I never knew they had them!
Also that 1886-M has a big time rotated reverse… it’s definitely not supposed to flip over top to bottom
Earlier British coins used coin orientation. The 1886M is normal. British countries decided medal orientation was better. In albums, when you flip the page, all the reverses are right side up.
My 1886 m flips
The only foreign gold peice that I have is a 1968 sovereign for the year I was born. Very pretty coin and I can't find anything American from my year...
Cooool I love collecting sovereigns! My favorite is the Queen Vic "Veiled Head" type. Also you can get lucky with some bullion dealers who do not know about the mint mark 😉
Thanks man. I've always wondered how they can tell what country these came from. Never did notice the tiny letters. Cool lesson!
