I have a half sovereign which I found metal detecting,1859 Queen Victoria. Much more exciting finding rather than buying. I expect that there are quite a few out there which do not get sold.
Thank you for your video. Regarding 7:53, the reverse side of the 2012 Sovereign does feature George and the Dragon. However, it is not Benedetto Pistrucci's classic design of Saint George slaying the Dragon. For those who are unfamiliar, it is instead Paul Day's modern redesign of Saint George slaying the Dragon.
Thankyou Jade. Do you like the 2012 version? I quite like the 2012 on the proof coin, I think the bullion version needed a bit of a better strike to show it off but I guess they don't want to make the bullion version too good either!
@@SovereignSaurus Yes, indeed, I do really like the Royal Mint's 2012 QEII Diamond Jubilee Gold Proof Sovereign 5 Coin Set which includes the Quintuple, Double, Full, Half and Quarter Sovereigns. Only 956 of the 2012 gold proof sovereign 5 coin sets were minted.
Nice little stack there! I really like halfs and I collect them. People should stack half's especially if they can get them at a very low premium because if gold goes up, people with smaller budgets will go for the smaller more affordable coins. Tip for newbies: most victoria's can weigh 3,9gr because of the wear.. Nice video once again!
Thanks for the tip, yes a great point that I forgot to mention in this video. We'll see what the future holds. It was cheaper to buy these 10 half sovs than I could find 5 full sovs for
Nice stack and thanks for the info. I hope to collect 100+ soverigns and 10+ 1oz brittanias before I retire, this information will help me to avoid a bun.
Thats a neat little device. Reminds me of an antique device I have to check if pre-1933 American Gold coins are real. Basically the same concept. Thanks for sharing.
I was quick to act when I saw the price yes 😁 There are various versions of the scales I thought I got mine from eBay but it could have been one of the smaller coin dealers who had them now I think about it
@Sovereign Saurus, I have bought a batch of Full Sovereign and I found 6 pieces which the diameter is a bit off, however the weight and the ping test are ok. The sizes are as follow: - 1894: 22.15 mm - 22.18 mm - 1912: 21.90 mm - 21.94 mm - 1912: 21.95 mm - 22.01 mm - 1914: 21.90 mm - 21.94 mm - 1926: 21.80 mm - 21.90 mm - 1929: 22.15 mm - 22.23 mm Do you to think those diameters are within the allowed tolerance? Thanks in advance for your help.
Hi. There is a bit of variation there. Did you get them from a trusted source? If the designs look ok and they come out ok on an xrf test I'd be happy with them
You might find one on eBay or antiques shop maybe a coin fayre. I haven't seen anyone making new ones so it's a matter of what you can find 2nd hand I think
I'm new to coins, but can someone explain why half sovereigns are not half the cost of a sovereign? I might be thinking too hard, but wouldn't a sovereign be a better buy at the price of less than double the half ones?
Hi, basically the smaller pieces have higher premiums.... Not only do you have the cost of the gold in a coin but it has to be manufactured which takes a similar amount of work. For the dealers themselves they have fixed costs which would be the same on each coin, if they are paying staff it takes the same time to package a half sov as it does a 1 Oz coin for eg. It is better to buy a full sovereign than 2 halves usually if that is what your budget allows
Not being indicated the nominal value on these coins makes more difficult to distinguish between a sovereign and a half sovereign, at least for a non-experienced eye and finger.
Hi. I got a 1/2 1904 Edward 7th sovereign , its 3.99 grams its got a ping off it when tapped with screwdriver, it's the right diameter thickness . But it's got a silver colour on the belly of the horse ? Any help ??
Hi, thanks for dropping in. I haven't much silver but if you search back a little there's the 1000 oz video with most of my silver stack. Recently I've not bought much silver, the VAT and high premiums kill it for me in the UK when gold is easy to buy at
@@SovereignSaurus thanks a lot sir for your reply. Yes the VAT and all the extra premium are extremly high but people is still purchasing silver because of the gold silver ratio. What's your opinion about that?
@@captainflint5614 The paper gold to silver ratio doesn't mean a great deal to me because I can't actually buy at those prices in the UK. People are selling around the £23 an oz range with shipping on the 2nd hand market some slightly below but not seen Brits going for much less. Gold ar £1500 delivered easily enough recently so about 65 to 1 ratio. Silver looks cheap at £15 an oz or about $18 though I'd be happy to take a sizable stack at that price
Nice little bank you have there! I like sovereigns but haven’t got any halves yet I really like the scales, I’ll be keeping an eye out for one🤗 Thanks again for the videos

@@sergionotarpippo7660 Cool. I do like the older sovereigns like Georges, buying a little at a time is a good strategy The cheapest way to buy is usually the 'best value' option but by choosing specific dates you usually get nicer coins, The main thing is buying genuine gold and buying at an amount and pace that is comfortable for you

There must be so much 'treasure' out there still to be found
Very nice. Half Sovereign and Cinco Peso. Almost Identical. Flip flop on both, depending on price at the sale. Thanks for the video.

I got one for the collection but it's a really poor strike. Possibly the ugliest sovereign available
For me, the classic St. George's design is definitely the best one.
