Sovereigns are minted from an alloy of 22 parts gold combined with 2 parts copper which was introduced by King Henry VIII in 1526. Officially this 22k gold alloy is known as Crown Gold which is the same alloy used for minting gold Krugerrands. Sovereigns and Krugerrands have same rose gold colour when freshly minted.
I know this is an old video, and you might not see it, or anyone, in fact. But does this mean you can have an old sovereign coin, and so technically own a gold bullion coin, AND a little piece of history that someone would have used in their daily lives? That sounds amazing
It is a nice sized coin and looks good!!I personally like the way the old sovereign looks, from all it's original day to day handling!! People would have a heart attack just thinking about doing that nowadays!! The pound's a pound, they all spend the same! The dog sounds good for next week! Happy Holidays to you sir and every one of your loyal viewers!!
The old ones had silver in but these have just gold and .84 copper just horrible looks like you have purchased from PANDORA very poor royal mint it has to be a cost thing
So much history in the sovereigns. I love them, if only we could get a glimpse of where they have been over the decades!!! I vote dog please. Great show my friend
I like Sovereigns for fractional gold coins because they are recognized item and have been around a long time and are a nice looking coin. Where I am located in the US there is no tax on the purchase of these coins and if one shops around a little, the premiums on both older or newer dated Sovereigns are generally much smaller than on quarter ounce gold Eagles unless of course you are buying numismatic key dates or other rare coin.
They do have good appeal and are a good size. Good that there is no tax for you too - I would always rather buy an old coin for the same price as a new coin!
Love them. My dealer charges melt when they come around. Needless to say they don't last long. Tax on bullion is up to specific states. And as long as you buy or sell less than $10k in a day, Uncle Sam isn't notified. They're big in Lebanon too.
Backyard Bullion luckily the coin shop has an xrf scanner. I'm just now starting to realize how many counterfeit sovereigns are floating around. And some are hard to spot due to their circulated condition
Two wonderful pieces to start with and the Carded Unicorn will be my choice even if I don't really care for any carded piece. Thanks my friend and we shall see you next showing.
Third times a charm lol going with my Scottish unicorn lol again lol. I like the sovereigns personally and in the state (really a commonwealth) that I live in there is no extra tax on any precious metals or currency so it is no problem here. I think the design is very regal and something we would not see here across the pond so maybe thats why I like it so much. Thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas to you and yours!!
+Andy Norman for £120 that would be a half sovereign. Try Hatton garden metals or Atkinson's bullion...but I think they are low on stock because of the cheap prices.
Yep, investing in sovereigns and the occasional Britannia when you're flush is the way to go right now. I've reluctantly accepted that the value of my pension is going to tank in the next few years so I'm putting all my expendable into gold and silver.
Hi backyardbullion I’m in the verge of starting my gold stacking journey, I have bought some best value secondary market sovereigns & I was wondering would I need to put them in capsules or would they be ok to leave them all together in one bag, would this affect any sort of value in the future
Why are the new sovereigns pink I’m guessing copper content but I’m bot finding anything on the copper percentages. Was going to buy one but worried about the pinkish color at resale!
How much is a 1913 Gold sovereign? I can't tell whether it is half or full. I noticed it is the same size as the Canada nickel, so perhaps it is a half. Selling it on ebay now. One buyer for $100.
I vote for the dog. Now as for the sovereign, I’ve never seen or heard of them before I joined The Silver Forum, but now that I’m kind of in the mix I hear Sovereign this Sovereign that all of the time it seems. To me the Sovereign is a real beautiful coin and I hope to purchase a variant in the near future.
Love this coin. UK Sovereign is in my list. However, I am still thinking as to whether I will get the young Victoria or the 2017. I want this 2017 particularly because it is an anniversary year of the Sovereigns. Thanks for the information. I just noticed that my notification bell was deactivated by youtube. I wonder if there is a limit of notification one can get. I just activated it again. Do you get notifications from my channel? I have been missing you for months now! Take care, BYB!
I have 4 sovereigns and 5 or 6 half sovereigns. The newest one I have is 1965. Here in Canada we don't pay tax on anything 99.9 or higher in purity. Anything below that, we pay gst on. The dog gets my vote
I wish I could answer your questions but I've never purchased a gold coin or round. 2018 I hope to purchase my first gold coin but it will might be a St. Gaudens. Rwanda dog of course. Thank you for sharing
Oh ok. I know the work in making the Mafia bar, but would love to hear your version of it. I guess I would vote for the dog then. I know nothing about that. Our story played out in my last video about the twins. Take care my friend.
The 22k. Gold Sovereign continues to be minted at the Perth Mint here in Australia , however it is subject to 10% GST sales tax and since 1985 subject to capital gains tax. Accordingly it is less popular than the 24 k. coins that as investment grade are exempt from sales tax but not CGT
I absolutely love the sovereign Saint George and the dragon it's my absolute top favorite coin that I don't have except for in silver but I will have one in gold and I have the Proof sovereign Yes absolutely love... I think it's the European in me I go to Queen Beast series Or metal mafia Bar… I'm gonna buy one today
I think the chances for modern gold/silver coins , no matter bullions or collectibles , they will not have high premium over spot no matter how long you have stacked since there are huge amount of existence unlike the old gold standard coins , where they were mostly melted down already . Long story short , the most important thing is if there are no one destroying the coins , they are just spot price to be
I just got my first sovereign recently a 2017 and glad i did . next i want a 2001. As for next week is a tough one. Had to send both dragon proofs back to rm to be exchanged as both was defective worst condition proofs i ever seen so guess i go with the unicorns.
I'm in the US and sovereigns are one of the best ways to buy gold. I believe in 22k gold. It can stand up to circulation the way gold was meant to be. This is supposed to be money. I don't need 24k coins sitting in plastic. This leaves the Eagle, Krugerrand, and Sovereign. And Eagle and Krugerrand aren't worth it in fractional sizes. So that leaves 1 oz eagle, 1 oz krugerrand, and sovereign. All are great, but sovereign are the only ones that are a smaller size, yet low premiums to buy. Plus they're classic looking, beautiful, and have real history. You can't go wrong with sovereigns.
Under 1000 bucks we get taxed but if your using cash with no receipts I’ve heard (wink wink) they will wave the tax and it’s mostly Eagles we see here in the USA
Interesting to see the old next to the new sovereign. No change in design all those years? It does not appeal to me, maybe too British? :-) The dog next time please
I have been collecting sovereigns my whole life, since they were under $10 each. Unfortunately, they are taxed here as they are not the required 999. I am collecting the Queen's beasts series in silver but the dog has my vote.
I have 2 1983 st George and the dragon £1 coin it isnt real gold like them ones it's just a real £1 what they are made out off I've heard they are really rare with being the circulation £1 coins are they worth money I have 2 but want to get one made into a ring aslong I have a big £2 coin that is all gold without the silver circle in the middle it's much bigger and thicker than normal £2 coin just never seen one off them £2 before I did get it in my change I kept them as I collect coins too
Here in Australia the Perth Mint coins the Sovereign but are less popular . The Gold Sovereigns are subject to both capital gains tax and to a 10 % GST ( VAT equivalent ). A better deal is the 24 carat gold 1/4 onze coin. This is classified as an investment grade coin and under Australian sales tax rules free of GST . Coins acquired before 1985 are free of GST .
Martin Carter: We have to pay 20% VAT on all silver coins here in the UK but gold coins are VAT-Free. Both gold & silver coins are free of Capital Gains Tax if they have a face value because they're classed as "legal tender".
Sovereigns are minted from an alloy of 22 parts gold combined with 2 parts copper which was introduced by King Henry VIII in 1526. Yes indeed it does, which is why I love these old coins.
Regarding 3:01, the name of the Guinea gold coin was attributed to gold that was sourced from the Guinea region in West Africa.
Beautiful sovereign gold bro. Love the look of those. Thanks for showing it and the history.
+BeachBum Silver my pleasure 😉
It is a nice sized coin and looks good!!I personally like the way the old sovereign looks, from all it's original day to day handling!! People would have a heart attack just thinking about doing that nowadays!! The pound's a pound, they all spend the same! The dog sounds good for next week! Happy Holidays to you sir and every one of your loyal viewers!!
+Ray Knapp thanks.for the feedback and the vote!
Watching it now makes me feel like wow he said £900 on ounce. I remember when it was that price because i wish it still was
E-GAMING haha just thinking the same
Look now 😀
Chris Summerfield lol yea £1,380 an oz
On the Royal mint website the 2021 Sovereign looks pink, so its not?
Its something in between a 1p and a 999 gold coin. Very coppery looking but toned down due to the gold content
Not sure I like the copper colour of the Sovereign, but I plan on stacking them anyway.
The Queens beast gets my vote
I'm not keen on the colour either, I've decided to call them Rose Gold so I feel better about 'em.
+FOSSIL METALS thanks my friend, I love thinking about where and what a coin has seen over 150 years! Amazing stories for sure! Thanks for the vote!
I like Sovereigns for fractional gold coins because they are recognized item and have been around a long time and are a nice looking coin. They do have good appeal and are a good size. Good that there is no tax for you too - I would always rather buy an old coin for the same price as a new coin!
Backyard Bullion Yes. I would also prefer to find the older coin if it’s in very good condition.
Most likely my favorite gold coin :)
+J Silver the same for many people I would imagine!
I always look forward to In Focus Friday! Another great video, thanks BB!
+Keystone Stacker thanks!
Love them. My dealer charges melt when they come around. Needless to say they don't last long. Tax on bullion is up to specific states. And as long as you buy or sell less than $10k in a day, Uncle Sam isn't notified. They're big in Lebanon too.
Wow, sovereigns for melt value is awesome!
Backyard Bullion luckily the coin shop has an xrf scanner. I'm just now starting to realize how many counterfeit sovereigns are floating around. And some are hard to spot due to their circulated condition
Very nice sovereigns, they are my personal favorite gold coins!
+Argentum Spartus as they are with many others!
Great coin, really like the George and the Dragon design. I'll vote for the Unicorn. Thanks for another great video.
+Alexander R De Voogt thanks for the vote?
Two wonderful pieces to start with and the Carded Unicorn will be my choice even if I don't really care for any carded piece. Thanks my friend and we shall see you next showing.
+Tomoko's Enterprize thanks for the vote!
The new sovs are so nice. You are correct about the size.
+silver and gold Portugal they are awesome!
I like the old european gold coins with that size.
For example: Portugal 5000 reis 8,7g ; France 6,5g ; Great Britain 8g
BB, a am subbed to you
Let me invite you to my young channel, with silver and gold items from Portugal. You are welcome.
Third times a charm lol going with my Scottish unicorn lol again lol. +D Wing's World thanks for the vote! Hopefully this time is a charm! The sov design is a great one for sure, timeless classic!
Why are the new sovereigns kind of pinker than older ones? Do they use more copper now?
Informative and interesting, where is the best place to purchase the bullion grade at around £120?
+Andy Norman for £120 that would be a half sovereign. Try Hatton garden metals or Atkinson's bullion...but I think they are low on stock because of the cheap prices.
The Sovereigns are some nice coins.
+gligor1290 yes they are!
I love them and have 3 half Sovereigns .
Looking to get many more !
West Coast of the USA

Hi backyardbullion I’m in the verge of starting my gold stacking journey, I have bought some best value secondary market sovereigns & I was wondering would I need to put them in capsules or would they be ok to leave them all together in one bag, would this affect any sort of value in the future
Best in capsules but in a bag will just be fine too!
Why are the new sovereigns pink I’m guessing copper content but I’m bot finding anything on the copper percentages. Was going to buy one but worried about the pinkish color at resale!
22ct gold with copper instead of silver content. It is different, some like it some dont!
There definitely nice coins . I I think I need to have at least one in the stack thanks for getting back to me. It’s appreciated
Does condition of bullion matter? Should i still buy it if it has scratches or dings on modern coins?
How much is a 1913 Gold sovereign? I can't tell whether it is half or full. I noticed it is the same size as the Canada nickel, so perhaps it is a half. Selling it on ebay now. One buyer for $100.

+999 magnum they are very popular coins for sure! Thanks for the vote!

+Silver Saver I am getting notifications from you - but I have heard that RUclips sometimes mysteriously turns them off. Who knows what they do!
I have 4 sovereigns and 5 or 6 half sovereigns. The newest one I have is 1965. Here in Canada we don't pay tax on anything 99.9 or higher in purity. Anything below that, we pay gst on. The dog gets my vote
+mimaroo ouch, nasty taxes! Thanks for stopping by and voting!

Let’s go with the unicorn 🦄
+DOC Silver Stacker thanks for the vote!
My vote is for either the Metals Mafia bar, or the dog.
+Slacker Stacker one or the other my friend 😉 thanks for stopping by!
Oh ok. I know the work in making the Mafia bar, but would love to hear your version of it. I guess I would vote for the dog then. I know nothing about that. Our story played out in my last video about the twins. Take care my friend.
I will like the dog fore next week!
+gligor1290 thanks for the vote!
In California these are generally "cheaper" when stacking for some reason. Most foreign gold is when compared to AGE or Buffalos when buying a Oz.
my vote is for the mafia bar
as for taxes in my state they do not have any sales tax on PM's so that is good
corndogg 42 same here buddy lol
+corndogg 42 thanks for the vote!
How comes they don’t have a unit of currency on them?
Didn’t need a unit 200 years ago when it was the only game in town.
looks almost like a rose gold color which cool it stands out from other gold bullion, I probably wont buy one but it is a nice looking coin
I prefer the old looking style and colour
The 22k. Gold Sovereign continues to be minted at the Perth Mint here in Australia , however it is subject to 10% GST sales tax and since 1985 subject to capital gains tax. Accordingly it is less popular than the 24 k. coins that as investment grade are exempt from sales tax but not CGT
10% sales tax on gold is absurd.
i vote for the dog

The red tone goes well in jewelry but for investment I just prefer yellow gold.

I just got my first sovereign recently a 2017 and glad i did . next i want a 2001. As for next week is a tough one. Had to send both dragon proofs back to rm to be exchanged as both was defective worst condition proofs i ever seen so guess i go with the unicorns.
+rox dude they are great gold coins to get hold of!
New coins are 22 carat old are 24 hence difference in colour 👍

I'll take any Sov,they are beautiful coins and a good investment.Check out my Pharoah Skull vid,I gave you and some other pourers a shoutout
+JRW3 just checked you out and subbed! Thanks for stopping by!
I have been collecting sovereigns my whole life, since they were under $10 each. Unfortunately, they are taxed here as they are not the required 999. I am collecting the Queen's beasts series in silver but the dog has my vote.
+MétéoMan lucky you getting a sovereign for under $10!!! Thanks for the vote though!
Yes they were cheap in the 60's, but $10 then was very different than $10 now. It was once a whole meal, now it is a tip.
+MétéoMan very true, buying power preservation though. You have turned one meal into 10 meals!
