I like seeing old collections like that. Part of the fun of collecting old coins like those is imagining how many hands they have passed through. I love it, thanks!
Some of the most expensive coins I've ever seen have had rim toning like many of these. I would think that toning on circulated coins like this is a good thing. It gives us something else to look at besides wear of the detail. Seeing this video I understand the arc like toning patterns I see on the edges of larger coins from quarters to half dollars. t's the edge that was actually touching the cardboard in one of these sets where the toning occurred the fastest. This holder is pretty cool but you're gonna get some trigonometric toning patterns. Awesome collection here! They've got some rainbow premium in there too.
Very cool collection! But the sulfur outgassing from the kraft paper is slowly destroying them. I would get them away from that acid paper and conserve them to halt the deterioration.
Dudes were making those coins hundreds of years ago and telling each othet to do the best job, because Ben would be making videos on them in the future?
Really great coins of history - so great they were kept for us to enjoy. So it there more historic value leaving as they are in the packaging. If you send them in - do you take them out of holder or will the grading company do that and then grade them?
Ben thanks for the share! I have only recently found these coins desirable. About six years ago I had a guy willing to sell these type at a modest price, sure wish I could roll back that time 😢
Beautiful collection. I agree that most of these should stay raw. There's something very tangible about being able to handle the coins in your hands, especially when it's not a super expensive rare coin.
Thanks for showing those. Even in the more modern holders that use more inert materials I am not a big fan of the sliding plastic. Seems like some of those coins could benifit from some judicious 'in house' conservation measures(?)
Very cool type coins and varieties. Not a fan of the toning. Looked like some of those had a rainbow effect. But I couldn't tell if that was the plastic or the coin.
None of that is Artificial Toning, BTW. If so, then you are penalizing the collector by doing the proper thing by putting them in that folder, or even a Dansco or Whitman.
Some people prefer to distinguish between "intentional" and "accidental" toning. The older designation of natural or artificial toning doesn't have objective signs that can be determined scientifically with most coins. All toning is damage to the surface. Some toning has been done intentionally to conceal defects.
Hi Ben. I have been polished, and I have retoned. I now have a fantastic patina. *>>-->* 🦉
Love early coinage, just beautiful. Thanks for the history and grading lesson too Ben. Be well.

Yes they made sure
Fascinating toning, thank you for the information. I just recently picked up an 1812 and 1814 halves.

Any plans to maybe dip some of these and get the dark tone off? I’m interested in some of the seated quarters if you can get the dark tone off of them

Hey Ben
Perhaps a few of those will make their way to Denver?? 😉
The 1833 looks pretty good to me.
Coin capsules are a good option if you want to preserve your coins without having them graded.
The 6 on the album, is probably what he paid for them!
