Me too! Don't get me wrong, I really do like MHA, but the reason why I keep reading the manga is for Endeavor's development of character, and to see how his and Hawks' stories end.

    • @ljeans531
      @ljeans531 Год назад

I'm gonna disagree, I think the concept and ideas in the endeavor family situation are really good. I think they are poorly executed, based on the themes of mha story as a whole and how Japanese society functions in general.
In Western countries, if you are providing for you family, that includes emotional and financial providing.
In Eastern countries, much of their culture considers providing being mostly financial and being emotionally available as a bonus.
There is essentially little difference in how hawks father treated him vs Shoto. Yet the anime paints them in a totally different light. I have issue with that. Endeavor WAS one job description away from being Overhaul.

I’ve been saying this a lot, but “The wrong way to put out a fire” is honestly a perfect way of looking at what Endeavor did to Touya. Endeavor sparked the fire, and instead of giving it calm and gentle water or something to put it out, he basically poured gasoline and paint thinner on it, and then proceeded to ignore the fire and let it build, not realizing that he was not only the root of the problem but also the main one making it worse.
And by the time he did realize it, it’s all just too little too late.

  • @raec5426

The thing with Endeavor's "talk" with Toya is that he didn't show him enough value as a person - *his child* - even if not training (hanging out with him in general to give him attention as a parent). So left him too much to his own devices and pushed Rei to handle things as time went on.
He told Toya to give up his obsession, but he wouldn't give up his own obsession to surpass All Might with a child. Toya saw that, so he was hypocritical.
This is coming from someone who loves Endeavor's character as one of my favorites, as sometimes I've seen some people with these parts excuse him a bit too much from his mistakes with Toya, since Toya was mentally unstable.

The thing is Endeavor didn't want Touya to get hurt but Endeavor himself didn't give up on his selfish dreams. Instead of making more kids, he should've given Touya more time, sat down and talked to him like how a real father should. Maybe even taken him to a psychiatrist or something. But, no. He didn't do that. Endeavor just pushed Touya to the side and kept on having more kids.

I find it sad that most folks keep focusing on the fact that while yeah Endeavor did try to do the right thing, BUT he still wanted that ideal child that had both quirks, which was the point of their marriage. He thought by having more children it would make Toya give up, which is an awful way to go about it. He's making him think his existence is worthless and easily replaceable.
I was honestly worried about this being animated because the general audience really needs to understand how emotional abuse works because its as bad as physical abuse. I'm frustrated by how most reactors are literally absolving and downgrading the abuse he inflicted on Toya.
In regards to Fuyumi and Natsuo, they were neglected and it absolutely effected them into adulthood. There is a special light novel chapter that takes place during Christmas and it explores Fuyumi and Natsuo's feelings about their family. You have to understand that Toya was given the golden child status when he was a child and it was abruptly taken away from him. Fuyumi and Natsuo were never given the golden child status so for them while they were hurt by Endeavor's neglect it was a bit bearable because they didn't build a bond with him the same way Toya did.
Natsuo himself said it in previous seasons. He never knew his father growing up and its only NOW that Natsuo is in his early 20s that Endeavor wants to connect with his children. That's fucked up because Endeavor missed out on the upbringing of his other children for the sake of his selfish goal. Natsuo is 100% in the right not to forgive him and Endeavor isn't entitled to their forgiveness.

Key thing Endeavor was training Toya. So as he was trained he would have been hearing how it was his duty to surpass All Might and carry on Endeavors legacy as a hero(you were born for a purpose). Then when it was found that he could not withstand heat it stopped and he was abandoned(he became a failure/nothing). What child would not be messed up by living in the same home as a parent who abandoned them.

We live in an era where we choose not to forgive and allow some to learn lessons to redeem themselves. We also live in an era where some complete rascals have thrown out the word “accountability”. So, nuance in this comment section will be lost. I’m with you all. Endeavor is trying to atone, he doesn’t want forgiveness, but he desires to do the right thing after doing the wrong thing for so long. I can respect that and him for that. We can all move forward regardless of our past…if we put in the effort. I became an Endeavor fan after these chapters in the manga. He tries. We have to respect those who try to do better. We all change in this life, one way or another, and the character Endeavor is trying to do so as well.
Edit: the anime stated a while ago, through Toga, that the quirk counseling that they put children with “problematic quirks”in wasn’t good for anything but demonizing “problematic” quirks…another instance of their society being rotten. Imagine being told you’re a dangerous problematic monster and your quirk factor dictates your behavior. Toga can’t help it and the society tried to repress her. She took it as the society trying to suffocate her.

Also, when Toga "did what she did," the people went after her whole family and her parents (btw, more bad parenting) turned on her further. Same thing happened with Gentle Criminal after his mistake. Had Twice family been still alive when his accident happened the public would have went after them too.

Endeavor is willing to say the right things but not live the right life. "Go play with your siblings (and accept being ignored by me like they have)." Endeavor is willing to say there is more to life than being a hero (for everyone in the world except me.) Imagine if he QUIT to show that point to Toya. Same with Rei, a woman who made every decision in her life based off if it will please her husband or her father, but she thinks she can convince Toya to live for himself and not for the exact same men?! Make it make sense. These are two 20-28-year-old young adults scared of Toya because he has all of THEIR hangups, phobias and triggers and they can't deal with him because they can't deal with it in themselves.

the thing is that the use of quirks to self defence without a hero licence is against the law and they can be prosecuted for that. remember Gentle Criminal? or Uraraka wanthing achive the license just to works in her parents company with her quirk? that was the status quo where the hero's monopolise the right to bear arms, i mean to use quirks and the general public funds then with heavy taxes. That is based on the general public trust that the heroes are enough, without this trust the whole system falls apart. that was the whole point of redestro and the liberation army. basicaly defund the heros.

This family LONG SINCE NEEDED THERAPY!!!! Both Rei and Enji could have did something different that would have helped, including getting help, but instead made some HORRIBLE DECISIONS!!!!!!
Endeavor/Enji's obsessions made him mentally unstable (which went untreated). It made him go insane, drive his wife (Rei) and oldest son (Toya) insane, and let said oldest son drive him further insane.
Toya inherited Enji's stubbornness, obsessiveness, and mental instability (which also went untreated). His need to have 💯of his Dad's attention, and prove he wasn't a "mistake" partly led to him and Enji driving each other (further) crazy.
Rei, while not mental unstable (at first), WAS mentally venerable to her husband's and son's actions. She could have seeked help (as could Enji), but instead did nothing until the damage was already done. By that time, she had watched (and somewhat allowed) her husband and son drive each other and her insane. (And watch Enji abuse Shoto, thru "training," while he neglected his other kids, and risked their mental health as well.
Let's not forget Rei's parents: They agreed to their daughter's Quirk Marriage for money and clout. Then they seemed to stayed out of this altogether as if they never even had anything to do with how this all started. Then the one (and only) time their daughter tried to get some help, she called them (the Teapot Incident). And I'm guessing they were saying, before Shoto entered the kitchen, "Well, just try to stick it out, dear.... We still need the money! Plus, it would look bad for both our families!!!"
Still make no mistake about ENDEAVOR'S MOSTLY TO BLAME FOR ALL OF THIS (about 85-90% at minimum)!!!!!!!🤬😡😡

I just got Endeavor tattooed yesterday.
This episode, and manga chapter, is one of the hardest to read. Endeavor was awful, he was a terrible father and husband, and it triggered me a bit bcs he reminded me of my father. My father has gotten better since, depression made him act a lot like Endeavor, which is something that happens with depression, it presents itself as anger. What I like of this scene with the Todoroki is the accountability from everyone, so many people don't agree that everyone was complicent, but me having lived through abuse, they ver well are. My mom enabled it, my brothers would disappear whenever my dad was in an alcoholic, suicidal rage. It was always me alone at home w my parents, while my older brothers fled the scene. I resented everyone in my family for the lognest time, because they all left me alone when I needed them most, I felt isolated, and talking about these things happening were taboo, everyone would act as if nothing was happening. It took my mom almost dying from a ruptured aneurysm for my dad to change, and it was a slippery slope, a constant uphill battle, and he still struggles with the depression, but he no longer drinks and while he gets sad, he doesn't get angry like he used to before. I might never forgive him, but I can recognize he has changed, and I will always always support change, and I can see his efforts, and my family has become pretty damn tight. We all trust each other more, and we are always there for each other now. It took as time, but we got there.
When I first started MHA, I hated Endeavor, I wanted him gone, but overtime, as he got better, as he grew as a character, I couldn't help but support him, it all started, for me, with Inasa's recognition of Endeavor, and then with how much Hawks believed in him, and after the High-End fight, I had to support Endeavor as well.
He became my favorite character pretty quickly after that, he was able to overcome many of his faults and is still working to be better, he has not given up. I think it is admirable.
PS: Endeavor is smart as hell, he is not dumb, he is truly truly smart, which is why he's so good at his job.

About convo at the beginning of the video:
The thing the civilians in the series forget, and commenters siding with them as well, is how the public is partly responsible as this. They got so complacent and reliant on Heroes that they took them for granted (especially when All Might was still active), and forgot they were human beings (something they also seemed to forgot with the villains, the vigilantes, and even their fellow citizens). And then ofc some commenters will side with the public, and the villains, and say all the Heroes were 💯 in the wrong, call them ALL fake, and thus are to blame for almost everything.
People being posting what the Green Goblin said to Peter Parker/Spiderman, pointing out how it applies to here, and I can see why.

Hi for everyone that thinks the responsibility of this situation is not only upon Endeavor and is everyone in the family little bit of fault :
    U WRONG.
    Why?
    Ok, lemme answer u_
Endeavour : have 98.9 % of fault . The other 1.1% was Rei's dad for sold her daughter👀.
Besides that Endeavour LITERALLY bought a wife; make her have kids, kill one of them, traumatized the entire family, physical e mentally abused constantly his family ( mainly his wife and shōto and at the begging Toya/Dabi), we can say 2 of them became crazy ( Toya/Dabi and Rei - but it seems that she's getting better of that) and the other are highly traumatized.
Rei ( the mom) - 0.1% of fault ( even tho in my heart I gave her 0% of fault), and ONLY because she could be a little ( just a little) more active to better the situation and protect the children, BUTTTT regardless this tiny point, basically she was sold by her family ( + only to " save " the family name and for her quirk), obligated to have children, beaten up by her husband, despised by her son (Toya/Dabi), highly mentally abused by her husband, lost a son, watched her children being beaten up, mentally abuse, neglected and only used as a tool to fulfil the crazy wishes of her husband, burned her son, slowly watched Toya/Dabi getting crazy and for a time became afraid of her own children.
Fuyumi ( the sister ) , Natsu ( the second older son) and Shōto: have 0% of fault. I mean it's obvious, they are the younger children and were kids, U CAN'T BLAME THEM AT ALL. They couldn't do nothing.
Toya/Dabi - 0% of fault, for obvious reasons.

you are also wrong on many points. we never saw toya being abused when young. endeavour was proud of his son and believed he could achieve the goal he strived for, he didnt seem to receive the harsh training shoto did later on since toya was excited to train with his father. he also showed no sign of abusing fuyumi or natsuo because he never trained them because from the beginning they didnt have a fire quirk which is what he wanted to improve by adding some kind of cold/ice quirk. so they never recieved training and early on they didnt seem upset about being neglected by their busy hero father. Rei even encouraged having more kids so they could cheer and support each other like siblings should. so none of the abuse started happening until after shoto was born and toya tried to attack him. endeavours frustration may have grown out of control when he learned toya's quirk is dangerous to himself. but by this point fuyumi and natsuo were born, so he didnt use rei to replace toya, they agreed to have more. and while endeavour should have been around more for toya sure, he was still the number 2 hero which comes with responsibility as well. thats like saying kids of police officers or army kids should be validated for their violent outbursts because their father should be around more when thats not always their choice. endeavour even admits he can only teach his kids how to be heros, if they want a normal path in life he kinda in a bad way left that to rei as he supported the whole family really well as a hero. its not like it seemed they didnt get toys or whatever, im sure endeavour just said yes to getting his kids things they want with out caring. not great but i wouldnt call any of that abuse maybe neglect at best but its not only heros who can be neglectful and uncaring parents. look at hawks parents. at least endeavour provided his family with comforts . up until talking toya out of being a hero wasnt working, thats when toya endeavour and rei all started to slip for seperate reasons. so yeah everything about rei being not at fault because of this and that only happens way later. the only thing is being married off, which in japan wasnt seen as that bad but trying to mix quirks this way is taboo not illegal. but endeavour said she could have refused, but rei didnt because of her own submissive nature which didnt help in raising kids, since she is put in a mental hospital before toya even dies. so she was not around for most of natsuo and fuyumi growing up to be as stable as they are. rei was mentally weak and couldnt properly talk to endeavour or toya and she broke mentally because of one scene we see where endeavour actually hits her and has the same look she saw in toya which scared her shitless of her own kid. seriously the whole im starting to see endeavours eyes in her kids thing stemmed from toya. which that confrontation also stemmed from her not stopping toya from going out and training. she was too weak to stop him, but did she even tell endeavour. from whats shown endeavour realized he'd been training on his own and confronted rei about why she didnt stop him, but all she could throw back is there are those scary eyes what are you even looking at right now. sure endeavour sparked toyas want to be a stronger hero than almight, but he tried to cut that cord early on, it just didnt stick, at the end toya seemed to have inherited both endeavours stubborn nature and rei's weak mental nature. which made him feel like a failure that wanted his dad's attention so bad he wouldnt even listen to him. i mean telling him to look at me and pay attention to me. what do u call noticing your hurting yourself? endeavour noticed the changes in him over time but didnt know how to push him away from being a hero, but he was clearly seeing toya, and his method of distancing himself from toya was his dumb way of trying to distance toya from the idea of being a hero. endeavour certainly took many wrong actions, but rei was no better if she thought beinga meek mother would help in anyway raise their kids well. she was the type to get stepped on by her own kids, sure natsuo and fuyumi only remember endeavour pushing the mom but they were still young, and rei could have stood up to him. anyone who says endeavour would seriously hurt her if she did is just being as weak minded as rei. he is the number 2 hero, you dont think if he hurt her seriously to the point they need a hospital just for standing up for herself, that no one would be like um whats going on here. heros are always in the spotlight. sure people didnt know how his home relationships were but thats because likely endeavour never went that far , theres no hiding things if u hospitalize your wife. as for natsuo he could have tried talking to his dad about toya's late night rants, especially if it bothered him so much. fuyumi and shoto are the only ones clean in this mess, because toya avoided bringing those issues up with his sister or mom because well as we saw from an early age he felt his mom and by extension his sister are weak and useless. hmm wonder where he got that idea, maybe rei always being so submissive. point is you can blame the submissive do nothing type people too when bad things getting out of control. being submissive is not and excuse of oh why did ur family member kill his/her significant other? if you knew theres some unstable ness to that person but you do nothing and stand by as they kill someone, yeah good job you did nothing feel relieved you did nothing and this is the end result but its not ur fault, u only did nothing

"Toya built different" no man, that's not what you say about a kid who was MADE for a very specific purpose. I went through this similar thing, and I tell you, victims of trauma as a kid turn out different, they were not built that way, takes a community to raise a traumatized kid properly. Shigaraki and Toga didn't have that benefit too, not to say they're absolved for things they did as adults, but whatever they did as kids, that's not on them.

I don’t think so. As a child he blamed Enji but a key part of Rei’s healing has been her knowing she was the one who harmed her son. She did that, even if she was at a breaking point. It was her hand that held the kettle and maimed her baby. Shouto wouldn’t have blamed Endeavor in that moment and Rei was strong as hell for owning her role.

If the episode shows anything it's that at the very least with Toya, Endeavor was not the sole cause for what happened to him. It was a mix of Toya's own decisions and Endeavor's influence as a high ranked hero. As Toya said when Endeavor was telling him there are other things than being a hero he could do, he said he couldn't just let it go. Unlike Shoto, Endeavor wasn't pressing him to be a hero, he was deterring him. He and Rei didn't choose the methods that would have helped but it wasn't 100% either of their fault. We can divide all the blame up and afford Endeavor the most, but at least with Dabi, I don't feel it's right to assign what happened to him as "Endeavor traumatizing him".

Did anyone get the impression that Endeavor r*ped Rei and that's how Shoto was conceived and started Rei's downward spiral? In the scene, we see him glaring at her and then bam, next shot we see baby Shoto and Rei looking exhausted/empty. Am I too sensitive? I don't know how else to interpret it, the last pregnancy just doesn't look consensual to me. Do manga readers have a more definitive answer?
During the sport festival arc (anime vers.), I also believe Shoto said sth along the lines of Endeavor forcing his mother to have children but maybe it was just the impression I got about quirk marriages.

There was nothing in the manga that made it clear one way or the other. Given how rape can be defined in multiple ways, it still wouldn't be clear cut anyway. In the manga, the specific scene was a bit different though. It wasn't framed as him glaring at her specifically, just getting angrier with AM spliced in then we see her making that face before the Shoto reveal.

      @emilylee9568 11 месяцев назад +3

Whether or not she was raped (which the manga leaves up to the reader), after Fuyumi she definitely did not want more kids. Having to carry two whole ass pregnancies and than take of said kids for the next eighteen years is a huge responsibility. Endeavor wasn't doing shit to help with anyone other than Shouto, leaving all the responsibility of child rearing up to Rei. Which is a lot by itself, let alone when one kid is isolated away in another part of the house, and another is mentally falling apart.
Bear in mind that this is Japan, where having two children is a rarity, let alone four.

Shoto scar is a combined heat burn and freezer burn. After burning him with the super hot boiling water, Rei (temporarily) came to her senses and tried to use her ice on him. Unfortunately, it make it worse (as she put the ice directly on his skin) and why the scar looks the way it does. Its in the manga but wasn't animated due it both being 'too brutal for TV' and they may have known some people wouldn't understand how the ice didn't help.

Endeavor was wrong since he neglected Toya and pushed all of it on Rei instead of doing his part.
Rei was at fault since she undermined how bad Toya was and didn’t try hard enough to stop him.
