Endeavor started off well intentioned to not have Toya train, but neglected addressing Toya's emotional and psychological needs to ensure he felt loved even if he couldn't live up to his expectations with being a hero.
Training to Toya meant getting love and attention from Endeavor, because he didn't get to feel like he was receiving it any other way.
Yeah, and Endeavor justified failing to meet those needs by acting as if all he could ever be to Toya was the symbol of a hero. But as Rei pointed out, he may have just been running away.
@@tristanneal9552 I think that it can read as him running away from facing his obsession with the number one spot and how he had already failed Touya. He had thought that the birth of Shouto would convince Touya, failing that he tried a desperate plea for his son to abandon the dream that he naively pushed onto him. It's actually pretty well done tragedy when you look at it, all the Todoroki's (sans Shouto's) flaws contributed to Touya's spiral, despite them wanting Touya's safety before anything else

Yeah, this was called “The wrong way to put out a fire” for a reason. It’s honestly a perfect way of looking at what Endeavor did to Touya. Endeavor sparked the fire, and instead of giving it calm and gentle water or something to put it out, he basically poured gasoline and paint thinner on it, and then proceeded to ignore the fire and let it build, not realizing that he was not only the root of the problem but also the main one making it worse.
And by the time he did realize it, it’s all just too little too late.
Everyone else is recovering from physical and emotional pain while deku is like 'Downloading powerups updated plot armor'

OK pips, mha be dropping us all the teas and bombs all at the same time. Tbch, there's a lot to digest in this episode. This episode is really triggering, disturbing, and depressing. Although baby shoto easing that negative energies sweetly (what a baby 🥺🥰).

I had to watch it at least twice for me to not miss anything important. First and foremost, although depressing, this episode is effin' sweet. This might not the best episode, but I think this episode (as well as the next-episode 18) is one of the most important episodes of season 6. The art styles is so well done, the pacing, the animation, the voice acting, and the music production is ✨ perfect ✨.
First, let's talk about the TODOROKI FAMILY. Their family's origin is really fcked up-like big time. There are so much things that isn't right in their family that I don't know where to start but let me start with this one: I don't know why I get the feels that Endeavor forced himself on Rei to have another child (which is Shoto). In the episode, about 6:50 time stamp, the look that Endeavor gave to Rei really gave me the idea that he forced himself on Rei (am I the only one that thought it that way?). It doesn't help that after 'that' scene, shoto was born. The look in Rei's face is also giving me the, "Thank God, this means that I don't have to produce any more children, right?", kind of face. So, if it is really the case, then Endeavor was a big piece of sht.
Also, they didn't include this in the anime but the reason why Rei agreed to have many children, despite knowing that Endeavor only want children to have stronger quirks, is that she want and thought that if she have many children, then they will not be lonely and they can support each other in the future.
Next is, imo, the real victims who suffered the most in the family is Shoto and Toya. They kind of really similar in terms of how endeavor used them because of his obsession of surpassing All Might. They also do not care if their bodies were destroyed as long as they can spite on Endeavor. The only difference is that Shoto has Deku. If ever Deku didn't knocked some sense on Shoto back on UA festival, Shoto would've been much different. And if ever someone saved Toya the same way Deku saved Shoto, maybe there's a chance that Dabi will not be born. Major shout-out to Deku being one of the most influential and inspiring people in mha, preventing another (potentially) Dabi to exist.
SPEAKING OF Toya, I almost cried thinking about him. Imagine being harshly trained for as long as you acquired ur quirk, giving this duty to surpass the number one, and then just being discarded one day without any explaination. And then watching ur father make more children because you are not enough even though you are giving your very best. That's why, Dabi's line, "Dad never thought me how to put out the fire", hits different. Endeavor ignited that fire within him but never told him the reason why he has to stop, and how to stop properly. He really just want for his Dad to acknowledge and to be proud of him. Toya is so desperate to be seen and looked at, that he resorted to being a villain because in that way, his family can't ignore him. Thus, his line, "Todoroki Enji, Mom, Fuyumi, Natsu, Shoto, watch me in the pits of hell" (while crying in blood; 4:01 time stamp). But then again, although we understand him, it doesn't justify the fact that he killed many people >
You're wrong about the part Rei wants more children. The only child she wants is Touya and Fuyumi, that's where she said she wants both of them to support each other. After that, Rei is already satisfied with the two kids but Enji is the one who wants Natsuo and Shoto.

Hi, i'm already catch up with the lastest chapter of Mha but i truly have the habit to read the chapters to fast and tend to overlook any details and information. Hence the reason why i love to rewatch the show with reactor like them and letss react channel. They point out the point that i do miss despite already watch and read manga. Also, commentary like you also really help me to finally understand the context and question in my mind. So, if you didn't mind, can you explain about this prison thingy. I seem don't remember the significance scene and contexts with that information. Thank you in advance. 🥰
The thing is Endeavor didn't want Touya to get hurt but Endeavor himself didn't give up on his selfish dreams. Instead of making more kids, he should've given Touya more time, sat down and talked to him like how a real father should. Maybe even taken him to a psychiatrist or something. But, no. He didn't do that. Endeavor just pushed Touya to the side and kept on having more kids.
Like imagine a 13 year old child saying things like this to their parents - "You'll be glad that I was born" or in the manga version - "You'll realize that I wasn't a mistake"… Pathetic and depressing. This episode demonized Endeavor for me even more.
Also the anime still needs to animate the 2nd part of Touya's backstory, like how he survived and who rescued him. And let me tell you... That 2nd part of his backstory is even more sad and depressing.

@@Mr_AntiSocial yes he is lol the concept that the intermixing of quirk factors can lead to increasingly stronger, unpredictable quirks, even leading to complete mutation of the original strains. This is a result of a fire quirk improperly mixing with an ice quirk, to create a stronger, yet unpredictable, and self destructive new quirk.
Man this episode hit a lil too close to home but it was really well done
Its hard for me as I do see Enji as sb who became a better person, but his past sins do really make me feel sick. Regardless of who he is today, he did kill his oldest son (we have Dabi, but that is just the fraction of Touya), he beat his wife and drove her to a mental asylum, he mentally abused Shouto and he fully neglected his other 2 kids. This is one of those situations where I think only the victims can decide if Endevour is worthy of their forigveness..and well the verdict based on Touya is - NO.
I feel sad for his mom and his brothers and dabi too😢
The thing that Toya needed to hear, just like Deku, the words: you can become a hero.
But Rei and Endeavor should've trained Toya to strengthen his body to hold his quirk better.
As we know it's not that uncommon that quirks are too strong for a person's body (as Navel laser guy said)
It was a problem of his genes: his body was naturally too weak to fire. If he trained, he would have become stronger and would be able to hold longer, but eventually he would start to burn.
His flames can reach 3.300 degrees.
(Literally half of the sun's surface temperature... it's monstruous.)
If he didn't figured a way to cool down, he could die mid-battle so yeah, if he became a hero, he would be strong, but all it would take is a little, ridiculous mistake
And he would burn in mid battle.

@You alright boi ? Imagine being a kid of a mother that you feel like was FORCED to have you, and of a father that already replaced you by Shouto. As Rei said, nobody really looked at Touya and at the core of the problem, the problem that lied in the line "I ll make you be glad I was born" - which clearly says - Touya just wanted to hear he was not a mistake. He felts like he was as he said "just a kid nobody needs". He was brough up for year as sb who is gonna be a no1 hero, with all the attention and love, and the moment his quirk wasnt "suitable" he was dropped. Its a very different situation from Deku where Deku d have been sad if he couldnt become a hero, but his whole identity and self-value was not based on whether he will be no 1 or not. He knew that even if he never became a hero his mom d love him, Touya only knew that if he wont be good enough, he may as well never been born.

Remember episode 11? Endeavor said even he had Toya, he still wanted to create a kid with his desired quirk. This intention is so twisted and ill.
wow it's like you completely missed everything that's happened with this family since Shoto was introduced in season 2 lmfao If you're unable to understand what the show, in plain words is telling you, then any hope for nuance or critical thought is apparently a lost cause from you.

After watching the episode, I remember that Dabi said he coudnt cry because his lacrimal glands were burnt, when Hawks asked him why he "didnt have the face" of someone who is mourning a friend / sad. In this episode Toya said he didnt knorw why everytime he got strong emotions he couldnt help to cry. Thats why he was crying blood in the begining of the episode, he is just so excited to see his dad fail and his family suffer, he has waited all these years for this vengeance. Kinda sad.

Not much to say but it’s not only on endeavor fault the family could have done more to help. Toya needed support no one gave him 😢. his on Mum told him to choose a different path understandable but he far to gone he wanted to get his father attention that not the right approach for a kid who wanted to be a hero .wat an ep
I wouldn't say *just* a caring dad. But I did like the way it showed a very realistic portrayal of slipping from healthy to problematic to abusive over time. Often times that happens like this, slowly over time as toxicity builds to critical levels.
he definitely wasn't a caring dad if he was he wouldn't have pushed his expectations on his kids but he was a good person who let his own desires rule and ruin his children, but its never too late to be a better father

I'm getting increasingly frustrated with the response from reactors. Yes endeavor wanted toya to stop but his bright idea to make him stop was to continue to have children in the hopes he gets his ideal quirk child AND break toya spirit too the same way endeavor felt hopeless that he could never beat All Might.

so what you're saying is that you're so caught up in your own bias that you are unable to see the nuance of the situation? That's a fault on you, you're the common denominator here. IMHO people aren't taking Enji's side enough, all of the Todoroki family, outside of Shoto are guilty, the entirety of the society the live in is incredibly fucked up, discriminative, prejudiced, nepotistic, and vain, are you really surprised that it lead to these outcomes?

While that's true, Endeavor really did have good intentions, he just didn't know that what he was doing was even worse. He thought he was protecting Touya.
This episode made Endeavor look even WORSE than before. "I want Touya to stop cause he's hurting himself" - that's care and love. No doubt about it. But as soon as he said - "This is the only way to stop him (he implied that he wants more kids to surpass All Might and replace Touya). Touya could never surpass All Might." - that was the deal breaker for me. That's not love and care. That's called being too selfish to understand what you actually have to do for your child as a father.
And he also neglected Touya (also the other siblings). And neglect is also a form of abuse - mental and emotional abuse. Maybe Endeavor never raised his hands on Touya, but he mentally and emotionally abused him (maybe Endeavor wasn't even aware that he was abusing Touya, but he was doing it anyway...). And abuse is abuse; it doesn't matter if it's physical, mental, emotional or sexual. There isn't one that's worse than the other.
Honestly, I agree with the person above me. Shoto, and as well as Natsu over exaggerated the abuse and what Enji was doing without knowing what was going on behind the scenes. It was clear that Endeavor had a problem and ignored Touyas emotional state, but it was really his mistake, he didn't do it intentionally. It seemed like he was actually over protective of Touya, and that's what caused him to be harsh to him and Rei. He mentioned that Rei seemed like she's gonna melt, which says to me that her mental state wasn't the strongest and even the slightest thing could make her crumble.
At the same time, Touya was also a bit messed up and that's why he was isolated from the others, because Touya had full on intent to attack Shoto every time he saw him. At first, Endeavor realised Touya wasn't able to surpass All Might so he took it upon himself again and hoped Touya would give up. He didn't talk to him, but neither did Rei, which is why they're both at fault. Shoto came to be, and made Enji's desires even stronger and it went downhill for them. Honestly, Rei going I to a mental hospital was the best thing to happen to her, because it was clear it wasn't just because she hurt Shoto, Enji probably saw her crumbling as well. I loved this episode.

@@zuzu6864 And I also agree with Rei's situation. What's sad is that, in season 2, Rei was telling Shoto to become a hero that's not like his father. But here she's telling Touya not to become a hero at all. And that broke him. Also, I know Touya was being rude to his mom and he shouldn't have said those things to her, but he was spitting out facts. We don't know what Rei's actually situation was, but according to Endeavor, she could've refused this whole quirk marriage agreement. But she didn't do it. She knew this was all wrong yet she went along with it. Later she gave birth to Touya and now she's giving him advices about life choices and stuff. Not gonna lie, but Rei was also being a bit hypocrite here. Not only she failed as a mother but also her words were contradicting her actions. Touya got mad because she was discouraging him to become a hero unlike what she usually did with Shoto and also she was giving him advices which she never followed herself.
@You alright boi ? I understand what you're saying and I agree with your words. It's just that Endeavor's actions really disgusted me and that's why, as a fan of this series, I personally can't forgive him and his past actions. I'm a manga reader and was actually curious about Endeavor's character development almost 2 years back until chapter 301 and 302 came out. When I read those chapters, I felt so disturbed that I couldn't look at him in the same way again.

Actually this episode is way darker than that. Endeavour did not actually care that much that Touya got hurt, he was more interested in producing an heir. His reaction was more along the lines of 'Oh no my son has special needs he's not good enough' yes he tried to stop him from self harming but there was no actual effort. And you can see on the scene right before Shoto is born the fear on Rei's face and the dark look in Endeavour's eyes, very heavily hinting SA. This was not about Touya not getting hurt, if it were the case, Endeavour would have actually tried to help, with therapy or simply spending time with his son again as it was all Touya was asking for. It was all about Endeavour's ambition.

Horikoshi has already talked about the nuances of this situation; stop being your own echo chamber and think for a second lol If you think this worlds version of "therapy" is any good you haven't been paying attention, like, at all; that's what created Toga, that's what the entire point of the licensees helping with the kindergartners was supposed to emphasize lol Touya if unable to control himself would have wound up locked in tartarus just like Eri would have if Aizawa didn't take her in. go read some author notes, the hero guide books, and re read the series ,as well as the spin offs, from the start again, maybe you'll see that this story isn't as black and white as you'd like to think it is.

I disagree. Toya was groomed into fulfilling his father's goal his whole life only to be tossed aside when he couldn't meet his expectations and was then ignored by him without getting any help after he had a mental breakdown, then after the trauma of literally completely burning alive, as a child no less, and spending 3 years in a coma in an unfamiliar place, he comes back home so he could apologise to his mom and sister only to see that Endeavour had seemingly moved on and replaced him with another child. I don't blame him for snapping at all and I heavily doubt he would have turned out to be the way he is now if he had a better family life and support system.
This episode was too hard tonwatch, because of the Todoroki's family story.
Everything was caused by Endeavor's obsession with surpassing All Might, as well as Toya's obsession and jealousy towards Shoto.
Rei freaked out due to Endeavor, so her life and health were ruined.
I'm glad that every member of the family has decided to help him out.
As a manga reader, I can just say "preoare yourself!", because now the ultimate battle begins!
