The focus on Enji and Toya’s blue eyes when they mistreated Rei adds a layer to her psychological break. When Shoto startled her when she was frantically calling her family she didn’t see her youngest son, she only saw the blue eye of her tormentor, and immediately after she burned him she came to her senses but it was too late. Truly Heartbreaking

What's interesting is that Shoto's scar didn't come from the boiling water but rather Rei trying to cool down the burn with her ice. I'm not actually sure if we have explicit confirmation on that one, but it's a very prevalent explanation in the community.

19:40 Dabi felt his mom and his sister weren't seeing where he was coming from. They just told him to do something else (which they weren't wrong), they didn't understand where he was coming from. He felt they couldn't, so they were useless in his eyes.
To be fair to the women there was no way they could. It wasn't their ambition, it was endeavors. Endeavor was realistically the only one who could understand him. Which makes what happened even more sad.

Agreed. I hate how so many people just stamp Toya off to be a misogynist that hates all women and sees them as worthless because of his frustration with his mom and sister not understanding him, despite him wanting to apologise to them for what he said and the fact that he was just a child that had his entire dream and the sole purpose to be alive ripped away from him in a single moment with no one to truly support and understand him.

Something that I always like to bring up is how fitting the title is. This was called “The wrong way to put out a fire” for a reason. It’s honestly a perfect way of looking at what Endeavor did to Touya. Endeavor sparked the fire, and instead of giving it calm and gentle water or something to put it out, he basically poured gasoline and paint thinner on it, and then proceeded to ignore the fire and let it build, not realizing that he was not only the root of the problem but also the primary one making it worse.
And by the time he did realize that, it was all just too little too late.

    • @teongreen5254
      @teongreen5254 7 месяцев назад

No sorry but I see it totally different. The title is like this because of Dabi. Dabi tried to put out Endeavors fire with his scheme but he failed thus the title The wrong way to put out a fire. Dabi actually made the family stronger since they all bounded together now to take him down and give each other support. Thats what this episode was about and thats why the title was like this. Whenever we see Dabi in this episode he is like: I cant wait for Endeavor to appear in public, I cant wait to see his pathetic face. He certainly didnt expect this outcome.

    • @natsuotodoroki
      @natsuotodoroki 7 месяцев назад +1

@@teongreen5254 I’d agree, but the thing is that he pretty much succeeded in destroying the life Endeavor built for himself. Not only that, but Endeavor’s quest for atonement kinda ends at this point since he deserts the family after they all come together. So I wouldn’t say Touya’s plan failed. While the family may have become stronger in a sense, it’s not because Touya failed to put out Endeavor’s fire.

He wanted to destroy his whole family and he failed doing that. He made them stronger and he basically lit the fire up under them. That was blatantly obvious by the determined looks and voices of them and the end of the hospital scene. And Endevavor doesnt desert his family. I dont know how you came to that conclusion but they showed the flashback of his and Shotos promise to take down Dabi together in one of the last episodes of season 6.

    • @natsuotodoroki
      @natsuotodoroki 7 месяцев назад +1

@@teongreen5254 Well, kinda. The only other family member that he wanted to “destroy” was Shoto. The only time he expressed interest in messing with other family members is when it would directly hurt Endeavor.
As for Endeavor, yeah, he did desert the family. Just because he changed his mind at the end doesn’t mean that he didn’t spend several months neglecting his responsibility to them. The bit at the end only happened because Shoto had to force him to come back. And avoiding spoilers for the future, Endeavor’s desertion here has pretty big repercussions.
So I guess you could say that the family’s fire was ignited, but Endeavor’s was put out. And even then, Touya’s goal was never to put out the family’s “fire.”

You could say that the fact even the kids feel to blame is testament to this family's good nature.
Natsuo feels guilty because he was the one that Touya always confided in and was closest with, so naturally he thinks he could have done more to help him in those moments.
Fuyumi feels complicit because she was just scared and kept to herself and yeah tried to just keep up appearances for the sake of not causing any other problems and no one would judge her family.
But its true they were just kids though so they couldn't have known any better, so while they shouldn't feel responsible, its only natural that they would.
Natsuo does say that "It all started with you, You're the cause" in this ep so they are still of the mindset that it is definitely Endeavour's fault (it absolutely is), but yeah in a way it is true that Endeavour "wasn't the only one who didn't see that child".

Touya basically kill himself and die like supernatural phenomenon called spontaneous combustion. There also some subtext of suicide victim too in his story
If you rewatch some past episode when Touya death get mentioned, The family mention his death quite in ambiguous way and you can even see it as he committed suicide. Suicide apparently a huge problem in japan and Touya situation also quite similar to those who do it in Japan. Where they go into the forest and after things they wanted not happening (His father to see him training) then they take their own life after it. Another thing is being neglected actually one of major reason in some study that revealed why teenager committed suicide too especially among adoptee who feel replaced after their adopted parent have another child and start playing favorite which quite similar situation with Touya
And just like in Horror film he revived and become ghost who haunted the family back

Touya clearly had mental issues due to many reasons from feeling that his whole purpose of existing is to achieve his father’s goals - not out love - to feeling abandoned when he couldn’t do it! He went through so many emotional stresses which his parents didn’t know how to handle and they just brushed them off and didn’t try enough! Also endeavor making it worse by having natsuo and shouto “to make touya gave up” is so fucked up and sad like it cost him nothing give touya the attention in many different ways not just training! Proves to him that he will love him and care for him even if he couldn’t be a hero! He told him to look outside the world and not to just focus on being a hero - after literally making him feel that was the whole reason of his existence for years - but didn’t reflect that on himself by slowly giving up on his obsession to prove that he really cares! like of course the kid is not gonna listen to you?
Touya loved his father so much that i really think if endeavor have forced him to train even harder despite being hurt he would’ve been okay with it cuz he was already doing it 🥲

15:44 A lot of people have had a go at Hawks for being supportive or essentially for not immediately burning Endeavor at the stake considering what they've been through. But what they don't understand is that what Hawks despises more than anything is sloth, the refusal to try to make things better.
Hawks watched Endeavor trying, Hawks sees the family here, Hawks sees Shoto doing what he didn't.
In a way, Endeavor is almost more of a symbol of hope for Hawks than before - because he shows him that people can change, that they can try to atone, try to make amends, try to do better. Both as a hero and in private, Endeavor has been the opposite of slothful, and he shows that even a horrible person who drove his family into the ground can try to atone, try to do better, try to do what's right.

During the tournament flashback, he clearly struck her and punched Shoto in the stomach so hard he threw up. I think the question is whether this was a constant thing. The abuse. And taken out of context it would appear so, but now we know why he was angry. Toya was a victim of Rei's neglect just as much as he was of Endeavor's. Also I feel like people don't understand the significance of Rei ending up where she did. She could have gone to prison for quite a while for what she did to Shoto. While he undoubtedly wanted the whole thing kept quiet, by allowing her to check in to a mental hospital he protected her from the legal consequences of what happened, and also protected her reputation by allowing people to assume (like Hawks did) for years that he was the one who had scarred Shoto. Despite the crude way he told Shoto where she was after the incident, she was not involuntarily committed.

Abuse is abusing someone for no reason or to assert dominance over someone. He didnt slap his wife cause he wanted to abuse her. That was not the reason. Love for his child was the cause for this happening. The mother did a similar thing just much much worse. She burned her child because of a feeling of hate when she saw his gaze. He slapped her cause of a feeling of love, she burned him cause of a feeling of hate. Two strong emotions. Now you can decide whats worse and whats really abuse...

  • @mrcx6142
    @mrcx6142 Год назад +5

The title here fits really well - the wrong way to put out a fire.
Endeavor could come up - probably also warped by his own obsession - with no other solution to make Touya stop hurting himself than to try for more children until they had one that could fulfill his ambition which would show Touya that he could never do it and discourage him.
Rei refused at first, but because she couldn't come up with anything better, she agreed in the end.
The proper way would have been to be a father for Touya. To see him, to show pride in him, affection, to dedicate time to him despite him not being able to fulfill your ambition. The problem is that Touya already knew what Endeavor's goal was, but maybe, just maybe it would have still been enough, to make him feel seen, to make him feel valued even without being able to fulfill his fathers obsessive ambition.
That neglect is Endeavor's sin, more than anything else.
Btw., just in case you get comments like these: Some people believe or try to spin the situation into Enji raping Rei for the children, and the anime's depiction (which is slightly different from the manga's regarding details) doesn't help.
But it has been made VERY clear by the author that rape was not involved, and that Rei did consent. Even without the author going such lengths to counteract those accusations, looking at the story with the slightest bit of logical thinking should also confirm that rape was absolutely not involved here.
It's just people either not understanding or wanting to make a bad situation worse. But Endeavor's sins are heavy enough as it is, no need to fabricate something that actively works against the story.
The story does such a good job in portraying Endeavor going more and more insane just over the course of those few flashbacks.
From the Endeavor who - despite his ambition - had a normal relationship with Rei, even showed care, the Endeavor who showed fatherly pride and affection for his son to the Endeavor at his absolute worst, when he hit Rei and Sekoto Peak happened.
It also shows the very different experiences the children had. Which also serves as a basis for how differently they deal with the experience. Fuyumi, for example, wants them to be a family again. Because Fuyumi actually experienced that, a working, somewhat normal family, even if Endeavor didn't pay much attention to her.
And something I had forgotten about until now: That Endeavor separating Shoto from the others wasn't something born entirely of his obsession and because he thought the other "pieces" would distract him, but something that was born out of Touya trying to kill Shoto.
It also shows how (despite, and I want to reiterate that here, Endeavor being the mad man in the family) the Touya situation aided him going more and more insane. Violence is never okay. But just the feeling, the frustration that your partner didn't stop your child from hurting itself, putting the blame on them - that's a very understandable feeling, for many if not most for us. It's not fair of course, but it's natural.
Think about it - if you are at work and your partner goes to the park with your child, which then falls off the bars and hurts itself, chances are you will be furious at your partner and direct your worries and your frustration at them.
Don't misunderstand me, this isn't me trying to defend Endeavor. It's praise for the realism in that part of the story.
The only unrealistic parts here are how Endeavor is MUCH BETTER than your average real life domestic abuser because/and how much he was able to change.

There is another reason why Endeavor couldn't find Toya in the fire.......more will be explained in the later episodes. There are levels to Endeavor's obsession. For it primarily stems from constantly being compared to All might. He got to number 2 at age 20. (Enji is 45 years old) Normally heroes are greeted with a warm welcome when they arrive to save the day. If you look closely, every time Endeavor arrives to help, he is always asked by civilians "What are you doing here?" as if they didn't want him to be there. This man was also super competitive and has some deep insecurities that have not been addressed until later...... Imagine having to hear that for 25 years. After all the things he accomplished, he would never be able to catch up to All Might. Only to look at his back. (This is what was referring to during the Kamino incident.) All Might has also addressed the constant comparisons when they spoke. Unfortunately, that was a conversation that needed to be had years prior. Ultimately Endeavor wants the same thing Toya does. The only difference is that Endeavor seeks the attention of the people and Toya was seeking the attention of his father......Oh the irony.......This is why he said in his speech when he became #1 "Just watch me." It hits different.

Comparing sub and dub, I’m in the minority, but I think the dub is just better and less awkward consistently. Jeanist’s joke about eavesdropping is just awkward in the sub and works in the dub. I maintain that anime subs are generally no more authentic than dubs- just more formal and stiff. There are times when subs are better but that’s usually when the English voice acting is beyond annoying (Demon Slayer, Naruto, Black Clover).

What annoys me most about the Endeavor stans is that they refuse to acknowledge what abuse is. So that scene in the manga doesn't have a "smack" but you see Rei on the floor as Endeavor yells at her over Shotos screams. The subtext is so clear. Also, not all abuse is physical. The amount of mental trauma, neglect, and fear he put in his family through are all categorized as abuse. I see nothing wrong with people liking him as a character, but to ignore all that is ridiculous. Hes a very well written character with great development. Honestly i was expecting him to be killed off when that Nomu attacked him just because i thought that would be an easy out for the mangaka. Its really hard to make a character like that be redeemed without a selfless death being the outcome. Who knows what will happen. But so far the mangaka has done extremely well with Endeavor and im honestly excited to see how his relationships turn out.

Shoto was heavy pressured and was going to the same path as Dabi but he was saved by izuku(a cancer) and now he wants to bring stability to his life
Dabi was heavily pressured as well and was thriving in it but his physical circumstances didn’t allow him to thrive the way he should’ve and now he’s just lost in chaos and revenge
And hawks had heavy family issues and didn’t want to be responsible for them anymore so he chose freedom but he lost a grounded part of himself because of said decision

In defense of being one of those who said that we never saw Endeavor physically abuse his wife, when we were originally hearing and seeing the Todoroki family drama, from Shoto’s perspective, he mentions that his father put his mother in the hospital, and everyone assumed that he’d physically harmed her, despite Shoto or the show clearing up that it was a mental facility. While there was definitely abuse happening, I don’t recall anything in the manga or the show up until this point that showed anything physical. Shoto never says it directly that he knew his dad was physically harming his mom. Even the scene where he hits Rei this episode is one I don’t remember the manga ever depicting it like that. I only remember her crying on the floor while Endeavor yelled at her, but I can admit that I don’t thoroughly go back and analyze every little bit of each chapter.
I’m not trying to defend Endeavor’s actions or inactions. I’m not even trying to say that it’s wrong to assume. I simply wanted to point out that we hadn’t gotten everything properly, even at this point.

I think it's unfair to assume that Endeavor was being a misogynist just because Toya was. Endeavor and Rei actually had a good relationship and was pretty happy along with Toya for a little while. While it was a quirk marriage, they also respected each other (at first).
He also didn't purposefully neglect Toya, he just felt like showing him more attention would fuel his desire to train more (I feel like that part was lost in translation). It of course had the adverse effect, because that just made Toya keep training behind their backs. When Toya started thinking "misogynistic" thoughts, Endeavor was already absent. Then again, he could've still heard that Endeavor calls Rei useless everytime they fight. I don't think Endeavor actually thinks "women are useless", but feels like Rei was for not being able to stop Toya from training.
Endeavor is a great hero but he just wasn't cut out to be a parent. Some people needs to stay single so they can contribute to society better, IMO.

(Also, to add to the discussion here, it’s later confirmed in the manga that Rei basically couldn’t have said no or else she would have probably been disowned by her family).

But the scene in these episode pretty much showed that he did hit her intentionally. So we could pretty much tell that Enji could hit Rei at these kinds of arguments.
And even if we don't count the physical part of abuse, the mental/psychological abuse in this house especially for Rei is just awful. She was being the victim of both Enji and Toya at the time.

Allmight is a literal cheat code, if it wasn't for the OP power that is OFA, Endeavor would be number 1, and it's not even close to the next spot in the ranking, he was miles ahead of 3rd place, and how do you think that happened?
he saved countless lives, it was always impossible to ever reach number 1 while Allmight was still working, he just didn't know that
He wasn't always "abusive", before Toya became uncontrollable, the Todorokis were happy.
And I still don't think he was abusive...
he had an abusive action, in a burst of rage, once
the reason for that was that he saw his son full of burns, of course he couldn't channel the rage towards the kid, so he let it out towards Rey, who he told to take care of Toya. Obviously he shouldn't have done that and he also should have been more present but the truth is that neither him nor Rey were good parents
Endeavor was always busy with work, aka saving people so he couldn't be home very often and when he was, he would be training with Shoto, that's why he put Rery in charge of Toya and the other kids
Enji isn't a bad person, he never was

I said I was done with this if you did this and you have gone and done it.
Toya is HURTING HIMSELF BY USING HIS QUIRK.
His Father knows that HE IS THE REASON WHY TOYA IS DOING WHAT HE'S DOING.
So he tries to DISTANCE HIMSELF FROM HIS SON TO TRY AND PROTECT HIM FROM HURTING HIMSELF.
And he tells his wife TO RAISE HIS SON TO BE A GOOD MAN AND SHE JUST STANDS THERE AND DOES NOTHING.
This whole situation is based on two things, Endeavour not just taking Toya to the side and begging him to be himself rather than a hero because he doesn't want to have his son die and Rei not doing the same thing.
Toya thinks THEY BOTH HATE HIM FOR NOT BEING THE PERFECT QUIRK AS THEY WANTED.
AND WITH THAT THOUGHT, HE THOUGHT REPEATEDLY TRIED TO PROVE THAT HE WAS THE PERFECT QUIRK AND NEARLY DIES AS A RESULT.
YES. Enri (Endeavour) is in the wrong and always was for trying to make a future better All Might to live through, but this wasn't all his fault, it was a family struggling with rebellious young people not listening to their parents and pushing at boundaries.
The lengths you've either gone to or are too stupid to understand in this situation scares the ever living shit out of me, this is incredibly basic information that is right there in front of you and you're either willfully ignoring it or far too stupid to catch it and you should be worried about that.
Toya hurts himself using his Quirk > His Father says "stop doing that" > they have second child who is more like the Mother > They have third child who is even more like the Mother > They have Fourth child who is seemingly the image that Enri wanted > TOYA TRIES TO KILL SHOTO IN A FIT OF RAGE AND ENRI ISOLATES HIM AFTERWARDS OVER FEAR OF THE SAME HAPPENING > Toya continues to hurt himself and train his Quirk getting stronger and stronger while hurting himself more and more > His Father keeps trying to stop him > His Mother keeps trying to stop him > He nearly dies when his Quirk Evolves and the family falls apart as ALL OF THEM THINK THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR TOYAS DEATH AS EACH DIDNT DO ENOUGH TO SHOW THEY LOVED TOYA AS HE WAS.
You see it, when Toya talks to his little Brother, the Brother distracts him and tells him to go talk to others, his Mother tries to tell him to not do something in the worst way possible and Toya tries to hurt her as a result and from that Rei is terrified of Toya and his eyes that look like Enri's and she lashes out at the only other eye that looks like it, Shoto.
It's all there, it's a family falling apart as all of them aren't telling each other the one thing they need to hear from each other.
    "I love you"
    THATS IT!
But no, "Endeavour's the bad guy, he hurt his family he brushed it off." fucking stupid ass people.

One thing that I think you are being too harsh about, is Endeavor "abandoning" his son. He did a lot of fucked up shit that can be criticized, but he definitely didn't toss Touya aside because he was "useless" to him. Endeavor had every intention of training him, despite him not being like he envisioned him to be. He only stopped once they realized, that his own quirk was hurting him. Him no longer wanting his son to be a hero, is rooted in him not wanting Touya to hurt himself. He tried talking to Touya, but he wouldn't stop, which then caused Endeavor to make the unfortunate mental gymnastics, that the only way to make him stop, is to "replace" him.
In his mind, that was the only way to protect him. What he did wrong is not taking the time to fully understand him, but I think for less selfish reasons.
