Used this method. Sprayed the seatbelt on both sides. Works like a charm. You can smell the silicone spray at first but after a day the smell was gone. I haven't found stains on any of my clothes. Big thank you!
WOW! 5 years after you posted this, it still works. The only change I made was to lay a towel out like a mask behind the belt as I sprayed it. You just saved me a bundle. Can't imagine what Porsche would have charged to replace it!!! I used the WD-40 Silicone item (not regular WD-40). Thanks for this!!!
@@dimitarpavlov5941 Silicone feels slippery, but it shouldnt leave stains. That said, a LOT of silicon sprays also have petroleum products in them to help extend the life of rubber seals. They are greasy, id recommend a bicycle lube like 'muc-off silicon' that doesnt, and also smells great. That said, if significant amounts of silicon gets on your clothes, it will render them water repellent so i would suggest giving the belt a good rub down after application.
Less of a mess and no worries about using too much spray. I just used wd40 silicone spray on a folded micro fiber and sprayed that towel well and pulled out seat belt all the way and cleaned it most of the way down and it works great! Thanks for the tip.

It worked on brand new 2019 Mazda MX5. I actually removed the trim panel and accessed the reel. Only took two minutes even then! I tried al the other methods on other cars. Nothing ever really worked, now I’ll have to be careful not to smash the window when I take my belt off! After about a year its slow again, so I'll do it again!
Didn't think it would; but It worked like a charm! My seatbelt was terrible. It was extremely hard to pull out, wouldn't retract and was squeaking loudly. At first it didn't do much but the next day it was significantly better and by that evening it was working like new! I guess it took time to work it's way in... I totally wet the first foot and sprayed inside at the mechanism, spraying less and less as the belt went up, stopping well before it contacted my clothes.
Great tip, if you have little messy buggers who love to get food all over the seat belts (aka kids ) I would clean the belts first. Just cleaned the rear belts and they do retract a bit better but will apply some food grade silicon to them (belts not kids )
Oh cool. I already have silicone lubricant for my window rubbers. If you keep your windows lubricated your window motors last longer because they don't have to work as hard to move the window. So every year or I wind the windows right down and give the slots the window fits in when it's closed a spray. My seatbelts are getting a bit sluggish in the back seats, so this will fix it. Might as well do the fronts too :) edit* all 4 seatbelts in my 2004 Sorento working like new ones. Thanks champion.
I have been doing that for years with my cars - just ONLY spray the glide slots on the sides and not the top or the seal at the bottom, unless you want forever streaks on the glass! The trick - open the window, and use a spray can with the red tube attachment on the nozzle, and aim it into the groove of the fuzzy vinyl glide on either side and blast it down in there. Then open and close the window a few times to make sure it's smeared all along the length of the glass edge.
I would spray the belt before it goes into the loop, that way it will lubricate the loop as well and its better than spraying it after and relying on repeated applications to spread the lubricant around
I sat in car, put seat belt on, then put a binder clip where the belt meets the ring (so I didn't spray there). Pulled belt all the way out and sprayed the last foot on both sides pretty good. Sprayed lightly a little above that. I didn't spray very close to the clip I put on. I wiped the inside of the ring off as good as I could. I used PB blaster spray silicone lubricant. I did this in 33F degrees outside. (I did heat the can up to room temperature) I cycled the seat belt a couple times and it works great now. Thanks!
My seat belt was slow retracting and kept jamming in the door drivers side when you close the door which i have learnt will eventually cause tears in the seat belt fabric over time. Just used soapy water and cleaned the fabric and dried then applied WD 40 to the retractor mechanism and fabric and dried again. At first didnt seem to have an effect but after 3-4 days once the fabric dried properly seat belt now pulls into retraction smoothly. Is a good feeling for the fix.
This works awesome! Been doing this trick on our cars seatbelts for years! Tho I personally recommend letting the belts dry overnight. Silicone spray kinda smells like cow manure. At least the kind I used! 😁
This actually worked with a cheap bottle of silicone lubricant from the dollar store. Not sure how long of a fix it will be. Surely not as good as retensioning the mechanism. And don't spray it all the way. Don't spray past the part of the belt that goes on the body.

that's horrible. seatbelts begin to retract slowly because the belt itself becomes dirty by sweat and dead skin and dirt and then begins to stick to itself.. all you have to do is clean it with soap and some water with a brush and let it dry. don't spray messy lubricant on the belt.

My wife would have a crap if i sprayed this on the seat belt. This lubricant has a very strong oder and will get all over your cothes. If you are a grease monkey and spend your life covered in grease then this is the way to go. Otherwise find a different solution. Besides stinking up your clothes and making your car or truck a toxic dump you will be making your belt attract mode dirt that will then gather in the retraction device which in a lot of cases you cant get in it to clean it, they are sealed.

You should pull the belt out all the way. I think the goal is to get the silicone spray into the retractor. So you wouldn't need to spray it all the way up on the portion that goes onto your body. I guess I dont know yet if it, perhaps, soak through? Maybe... but perhaps pull it out all the way like he did in the video. I think that helps it get into the retractor where its needed. I'm just happy to solve that crazy issue. If I can remember where this video is later, I'll try to add a note in about if it got on my jacket or not.

So when I saw this, especially right after watching a person cleaning the retractor itself, and... since I coincidentally just bought that spray for something else... I said "well ill try it right now - worst thing that happens... is nothing- lol. But it absolutely worked. Ill have to watch and see if the stuff gets on me initially. I imagine it wouldn't after a week either way, but its good to watch for... I'm very happy it worked. If the detergent method only gives medium results, the spray might do the trick. Make sure you keep it as far down the strap (away from the part that touches body), just in case u guys are correct about it possibly getting on clothes for a week etc. :-)
Isn't a dry lubricant (dry PTFE) better for this application? It does not stain and it is not as slippery...wouldn't want a highly slippery film of lubricant over a seat-belt that is meant to "bite" when a crash happens.
I tried all this so far goes quick until it get close to completion just sits there until you push it in. I’ll try Another coat tomorrow maybe it needs to dry
Gonna spend a few minutes to remove the clips and spray the mechanism directly with silicone. Don't like the idea of having a seat belt stain across my work shirt
My seatbelt retracted virtually not at all without feeding it in my 2012 Mazda5. I used the WD-40 with silicone in it and did not clean the belt with detergent beforehand. It did speed it up a little, but not to factory speed. I also hear a noise that was not there before in the mechanism. Maybe I applied it wrong or used the wrong type of lubricant. I would put my money on it that cleaning it before will give you the best results though.
Nice old car sales trick. But is not the way to do properly. It is hot water and laundry detergent for the belt. Rarely any lubrication for the mechanism is you do this.
I recommend only doing the first couple feet of the belt, otherwise you'll have the slippery and smelly silicone getting on your clothing. Looks to me like you did too much of this belt.

I would suggest Cosmetic Grade Silicone for the kids, although Food Grade should work well, too. 😂😜

Tried it on my 1989 BMW with a drivers seat belt that would lay in a heap on the seat, after spraying the belt it now retracts like a new car.

I have found that most silicon sprays become sticky after time and it attracts more dirt and dust
