Thank you, this is very helpful!! My passenger side belt is to the point where sometimes I get home and find the buckle outside the car with the belt trapped in the door 🙄😂
I tried this and it didn't seem to work - so disappointed thinking of replacement cost, it over the next several days it got better and better, ok now. So I think it's very important to ensure belt is completely dry before use. Thanks so much for the tip.
I have this issue beginning to happen on my nb2 mx-5. Thought it was the mechanism itself that was failing and that the seatbelt would need replacing. Will try this. Nice.
After cleaning the seatbelt, you can add a very light layer of silicone spray to further aid the retracting. Same goes for the mechanism. A little spray goes a long way.
Notice this is a Saab 9-3 your demonstrating on. I had one of these new back in 2003. There was an issue with slow belt retraction on this model. The fix at the time was to replace the whole seatbelt for a new one. This was done under warranty, and I don’t know if it continued to be an issue on later 9-3’s, or if they resolved it by fitting different belts from new. Maybe they didn’t want the mechanics getting dish pan hands by using your method! 😂
@@CycloneCyd After that, for model years 2004-2011, there was a different issue: The driver's side retractor was subject to breakage and, at least in the USA, there was a safety recall. @@matteopascale483 It got better for sure, however, it's a 27 year old vehicle, so I wasn't expecting a miracle. It still doesn't retract like my 2024 Subaru.
This no doubt works, but you can also spray the retraction mechanism with rapid drying silicone spray lubricant. I’ve used this method successfully on rear seat restraints.
Furniture polish or silicon spray is a good stop-gap fix to get through the MoT but long term it damages the threads of the belt weave and _can_ stop the belt performing properly in an accident
I’ve tried it but it doesn’t seem to be working, had acetone and window cleaner on the retractor as well as soaking the belt. If they pull it out the door backwards then it’s not working but if they hold it out like it was going to be plugged in then it goes back mostly. 🤷🏼♀️
I have same problem on my Front Driver Seat belt, But my problem bit wierd. The seat belt get stuck only during the sunny temperature, not during Rainy & Winter situation. Do you have any suggestion in this case only wh it happens during sunny weather?
Brilliant will try this if ever needed I've had old cars that were like this but luckily never mot failed on it, I don't suppose you have any suggestions for a belt that keeps twisting around but when you take it off it goes back normal and then you put it on its normal after driving for 5 mins it's twisted and sticking into me again Its driving me nuts
This is a design flaw a classic case where the swedes , overdesigned the slot width on the slot for the belt kinda dumb actually. I got sandpaper and opened mine up a bit now it works better. Give it at least 1 mm. It works better. Does not have to be so narrow that a bit of dirt causes it to not function. Should have been a recall. Shame on saab...
@@CycloneCyd I hear you syd I'm from Canada, got a chevy traverse with 300,000 km on it it's fine. . Never had the belt issue. They probably make them snug so they don't accidentally twist and jam and don't come out at all. Then people can't use them .May be a dept of transport design reg. For seat belts. Some of these things are regulated with safety "laws".

I was getting ready to buy a new seat belt. But you just may have saved me a hundred bucks. Thanks:-) and Merry Christmas
Yeah, try cleaning first. let us know how you get on
$100.00? That's a cheap seatbelt.

Ah, yeah. That's not good!
Wow, you just saved me $100! I was looking for a whole new assembly because I thought it was the retractor. Thanx.

To make it even better, pull it all out and spray silicone spray on it. Check videos on RUclips. Don’t put it on the parts that touch the body
Nice one. Simple and effective. Expertly done. Bravo
What a wholesome, pleasant lad. 10/10 whether it works or not 😄
Thank you for this easy fix, we're in November, will give it a try next spring until then a good wipe down may help
Really great and easy solutions for possible big problems. Thanks a lot for that!

Thanks I will do it in Spring time .

This is good advice but there are cases where the spring gets weak in the retractor too
This works great. Thanks!
awesome, thanks for the fedback

IIRC the belts were changed during 2003MY. Probs for this reason.

Defiantly trying this as ive had this issue on my leon mk1 for a while, i was even going to look at the mechanism like use a release fluid

Good stuff mate! 👍
Pull belt out and spray with silicon both sides, job done!
Another good way to future proof after you’ve cleaned it, bit of furniture polish on a microfibre does the trick.

hi my not seat belt stopped retracting long length sitting back not retracting at all how to fix that
I thought the springs might have gone bad.
A lot of people think that and it can happen, but that is rare. However ALL seat belts get dirty over time and with use
But the seatbelt isnt retracting? So it wont go back in

This isn't a Saab problem. This happens on all cars from all manufacturers.
