4:41 The reason why the Co-Driver in RBR uses a descriptive pacenote system instead of a numeric one is because Richard Burns himself uses the descriptive system that is used in the game, and to add to that, it is voiced by his real co-driver Robert Reid. So it was not some odd choice by the developers but because the game is made with Richard Burns's name in it. It also does not make it any less descriptive, you can replace "Flat" with 6, "Easy" with 5 and it works the same.

    • @gustavogoesgomes1863
      @gustavogoesgomes1863 2 года назад +56

only problem is that the concept of easy, flat, medium and etc vary from person to person and from car to car. describing the angle is less prone to subjectivity, and works the same with any car. how many times I died in RBR because in one stage, the creator (wich is the one responsible for the pacenotes on it) called an medium turn as an easy one, or said that the next turn were a flat one and going flat sent me directly to the trees (maybe he didn't consider faster cars). but all of that because I'm lazy and don't want to download different pacenotes (or even make my own)

    • @BrunodeSouzaLino

@@gustavogoesgomes1863 The problem is that both systems are a compromise. In reality, each driver has their own pace note system they develop with their co driver. Collin McRae's 1 to 6 system is less subjective but still has room for ambiguity. We're just used to it because DiRT is a large franchise, WRC games uses the same system and RBR is one fairly unknown game.

I simply dont understand why modern games cant replicate or do the physics right. RBR feels really like the car should behave. Its just crazy that a 20 year old game keep up in 2022. The best most HR rallysim. Dirt Rally is good, but weird really weird physics. but the marketing and graphics is a big win for them. So thats why its the most favorite. i speculate that if you look at most sims, they are trying to work within the limitations of their game engine. but even besides that, rbr at this point has had 15y worth of development. the original physics, while definitely still ok, had their issues which ngp has fixed over time gradually. new things added, barometric pressure being an example.
on one hand, i see no good reason why they wouldn't try to make it like rbr. on the other, it's probably a ton of work. ive seen fortran code of weather models, which are simulating atmospheric conditions; they are literally insane, you wouldn't believe what you're looking at, and that codebase has been being edited by like 25 ppl for 20y. it's a hell of a task to simulate a car, road surface, temperature, physics, atmosphere, materials, etc., and when deving a game there's a lot of other things to worry about as well. so, i don't know, i think one day.
to be fair, i think sebastien loeb evo is pretty dang close to rbr and ngp, it feels really good jus has awful sound and REALLY AWFUL pacenotes.

I remember trying a demo of RBR when it first appeared. I remember really well how different and weighty the handling was compared to the big rally games at the time. The irony was I found myself playing RBR a lot longer in one sitting because whilst the handling was challenging it was enjoyable. And once you'd mastered it you'd catch yourself making unbelievably tight and precise slides around corners and feeling a sense of accomplishment after completing every turn. And the more difficult the corner achieved felt all the more satisfying. I really enjoy rally games, particularly back then, but this was the only one where a single sitting on what any other rally title would've been a 1 hour session would easily turn into 3-4 hour stint.

Abandonware isn't "totally legal" by the way, that's one of the oldest myths of the internet. It's more of a "no one is actually going to care" grey area kind of deal.
Still, unless it miraculously pops up on GOG one day or something, sailing the seven seas is the only way of getting this game except for an used second hand boxed copy.

@@trexindominus8119 Yeah. It's still 'illegal', but the thing with abandonware is that it's unknown who actually owns the rights (or said person is unable to be contacted/communicated with) + there are no authorized sellers, leaving you with literally only one reasonable method of access, and no REALISTIC way to argue that you are in any way 'harming' the party who owns the rights, as they aren't losing money or otherwise being effected in any way.
There are a lot of things that are technically illegal, but on a practical level, entirely unenforceable, and subject to challenge as to it's actual status should someone attempt to take you to court over it. Mind you, if someone DOES do so, you'd likely lose just because legal systems favor those with more money to throw at them (whee, corruption!). But on a realistic level, you aren't going to get nailed for it. For someone to have a case in court, be it civil or criminal (at least in the US) they have to have a reasonable claim of harm committed. They have to be able to argue sales losses, or some other form of damages, such as the other party profiting off of their IP, harming the image of their brand, or somesuch. Good luck managing that on a 20 year old game that has been out of print for a VERY long time, that isn't being charged for access to and doesn't have any sequels or continuations making it into an active series.

I am not personally a fan of everything going online to race against other players in racing games and prefer hard AI just to enjoy but with today’s technology and the modding community it would be crazy if you’ve invested in any wheel to not attempt to challenge yourself on RBR. It’s challenging rewarding snd so much fun. The amount of content is insane! The rally sims version has over 80 GB of tracks and cars as well as a physics engine switcher where you can play the older physics on the fly and all the cars that the engine worked on! It’s truly the most amazing modding feat I’ve seen for racing ever. They even give weekly and daily race challenges where you can view them and then go practice to compete your times against others. Be warned practice well since you’re car gets limited repairs and if you crash you’re out of the race.

I liked it, but have to admit i never got too far on the game. I half-joked the settings required a PHD in car mechanics, but for those who wanted a casual game in which you could mod your car to suit the track and/or driving style... This game pulls no punches. From deciding the pressure of the tires (not sure if in bar or psi), how many milimeters you wanted your suspension lifted/lowered, the tuning the power in NM of the torque, how wide you wanted your wheels chambered in degrees and with how much wide from the wheelbase, etc etc etc.
The game was really good, not gonna lie. But is made for true rally fans, not for simple racing gamers.

I honestly prefer RBR's clear simple visuals over Dirt Rally 2.0's heightened reality visuals. They communicate the scenery very clearly and make it look more mundane, more realistic since reality doesn't really have all that much glamour to it. Dirt Rally 1 also had more mundane down to earth visuals which I liked, since they fit a sim racer much better than some overly shiny glossy visuals with fantasy filters. Dirt Rally 2,0 does look pretty, but it doesn't look realistic and its visual clarity is worse than in its predecessor.

I don't this video does RBR graphics justice. Occasionally modded maps can look uncannily photorealistic when the compositions are true to life and adequate photo textures are used. Think something like Rosciszow-Walim or Torsby. There is something special about having just the right kind of vegetation, color palette and small details surrounding the stages even though individually the assets are have quite low fidelity. It is rare to see such gritty realism in video games.
The lighting is not the best though and the models can be pretty low poly. Water looks really weird by modern standards. I'm not arguing it is the most beautiful looking game ever made, but that is has aged surprisingly well and content creators can work around the downfalls by having good compositions and textures. The graphics are convincing enough that they are unlikely to bother you when you actually start driving and and at best they can give you relatively good sense of actually being there.
That said I would love Richard Burns Rally 2. 😄

RBR is a rally sim and all other competitors are just child’s play in comparison. I get how people want a casual rally game but once you understand RBR (shouldn’t take too long) it’s so rewarding. Some people just love the easier option lol.

For me RBR is the cream of the cream, being this old and such an active comunity is very good and it’s very realistic, Dirt rally both original and 2.0 is more or less sim arcade it hits the spot physics to point, is as almost challenging as RBR and has a good number of cars too. In the page notes part, I really say it’s a drivers choosing of how they want their co driver to read it. If you wanna have a rally experience get both.

"Standard" pacenotes? That's variable enough depending on the driver's preference that I'm honestly surprised the format isn't adjustable in the modern games like the timings are. Richard Burns really did use descriptive pacenotes instead of numeric, for example.

Dirt Rally is hard enough. I like the difficulty but I feel like Richard Burns would be so hard that I normally would not even finish a single race. Also, I play on controller as I have no room to set up steering wheel and petals. i'm sure thats making things harder than usual.

Correction: abandonware does not necessarily means you can play it for free legally, it depends on whether the copyright holders still have the copyright or not, and whether they want to enforce it or not (at which point it falls into gray area)

I just have to comment and say that there is no such thing as a standard pacenote format. It's a perfectly valid choice to use descriptive notes because that's what Richard Burns used and the pacenotes are read by his actual co-driver Robert Reid.

    • @toddthezondalover645

RBR even in original state wasn't that bad. Road contact felt way better than almost any other game, but there was one big problem. Weight and gravity. In jumps it just felt that something needs to be done. Other than that I think it was pretty damn good.
