After seeing Braveheart when it was released in Glasgow, Scotland, it inspired me to seek out books from the local library (pre-internet) and read up on my Scottish history. I learned so much. We were never really taught our Scottish history in school, save for a spider and an obscure Scottish king (Bruce) and scant few other morsels from our past. Why weren't we taught any Scottish history in school? for fear of what's taking place today in Scotland today - an awakening. London were afraid of the consequences of Scots learning about their history, their culture, their land, their heroes. Supressing and distorting information - what they do - meant they could cow us, rule us, disrespect us and rob us. The burgeoning of information from the internet has caused a stirring in Scotland, a desire to want what every nation on the planet desires; simply to govern itself. Let's start by Googling 'The Scottish Enlightenment' and quoting Voltaire: "It is to Scotland that we must look for our idea of civilisation." What happened to that Scotland? Nothing happened to it, except it was hidden, intentionally, expertly by the avaristic and bellligerent Westminster crew. No more. We have no quarrel with our English neighbours, a popular myth put-about by those threatened by the inevitability of Scottish independence, instead, we welcome everyone, every nationality, every race and every religion. Is it so wrong to want self-determination? Of course not, it's the most natural thing in the world. Welcome, everyone, to our wonderful country.
And I 100% agree with Mr. Ebert - Rest in peace. No doubt it was the movie that should've gotten Ron Howard his Oscar, and not "A Beautiful Mind" even though that movie was pretty good as well. At least he still got an Oscar, but "Apollo 13" is considered his greatest film, a very strong and powerful story.
No matter what sins Mel Gibson may have committed, he deserved this moment! Very gracious of him not to hog the 45 seconds! Alan Ladd Jr. Is the son of a great actor from my Dad's era.
At 2:11, when "Babe" is mentioned as one of the nominees, you can see George Miller (the film's producer) in the audience, and director Chris Noonan seated in front of him. How telling that they were not seated side-by-side. They had a bitter falling-out during the production, and Noonan accused Miller of trying to take all credit for the movie's success. That's why Miller directed the sequel himself instead of Noonan.
I saw a documentary of 13 and watched the movie, and even some of the people who were there said 'these actors nailed it'! Whilst historians dismissed the movie Braveheart and called it a "Hollywood perversion of actual event". The characters were not in their true form. Wallace in the movie was inaccurate along with other characters in the movie as well.
The thing about Braveheart is that its like all the actors were specifically born to play their roles in this masterpiece, they were all amazing, perhaps the two greatist movies ever made is Braveheart and Amadeus, the true yardstick of great movies is,do you want to whatch it again and again and you allways which it was the first time
Braveheart i the movie that i watch and watch and i still get angry, sad, upbeat and cry like a child but not in that order. Thank you Mr Gibson and all who made the best movie ever. 👏👏👏👏❤
I really enjoy and love the epic film Braveheart! "One of the best film by the great Mel Gibson", and I put the film with Gladiator, and Seven Samurai.
That was a great film. It deserved to clean up the Oscars in everything. Cinematography, musical score, best actor, best set and costume design, EVERYTHING! .......HOLLYWOOD SOMETIMES BLOWS MY MIND IN HOW MUCH THEY OVERLOOK. And while I am at it I'll say this ..Mel Gibson has been one of the most underrated actors and directors Hollywood has ever had. The guy is a bloody genius, so so talented. Maybe Mel would have got the recognition he deserved if had been buddies with Martin Scorsese. I won't say any more than that.
That movie was a great film in a great year; totally deserved it. I wished the Academy had that expanded Best Picture system back than, I would’ve loved to see The Usual Suspects, Dead Man Walking, Leaving Las Vegas, and Toy Story nominated.
Braveheart is amazing. But what I can't understand even to this day is the fact that HEAT by Michael Mann and CASINO by Scorsese weren't nominated, I mean two Masterpieces of the 90's!
One of my favorite Best Picture winners, alongside Forrest Gump, The Artist, The Sound of Music, Titanic, Ben-Hur, The Godfather and Casablanca. If I have to list which is my most favorite or #1, I would say Braveheart!
To consider that lineup of finalists, Babe and Apollo 13 probably could have won in many, if not most, other years. It's just they went up against a Juggernaut in Braveheart in 1995
Yes, I do admit that I found that emotional, that was good in the movie. But there are things in A13 that hooked me into it, it was a great film, the acting was just far more superior, and the end was so intense, because at the re-entry scene you are at the edge of your seat even though you know they actually live, but still this movie makes you forget the facts, and at the end when they finally show the Odyssey with it chutes open, that was a big relief. A great movie will do that to you.

Well deserved award.
Mel Gibson the perfect example of superstar.
The film is one of the best period pieces I have seen. Amazing films
That's why Miller directed the sequel himself instead of Noonan.
goosebumps, right after Mel said wow
I saw a documentary of 13 and watched the movie, and even some of the people who were there said 'these actors nailed it'! Whilst historians dismissed the movie Braveheart and called it a "Hollywood perversion of actual event".
The characters were not in their true form. Wallace in the movie was inaccurate along with other characters in the movie as well.
Braveheart deserved best picture
the best and most inspiring movie I've seen, well deserved the oscar.
Of all the Oscar’s this should have won. Best film score is it
The thing about Braveheart is that its like all the actors were specifically born to play their roles in this masterpiece, they were all amazing, perhaps the two greatist movies ever made is Braveheart and Amadeus, the true yardstick of great movies is,do you want to whatch it again and again and you allways which it was the first time
Braveheart i the movie that i watch and watch and i still get angry, sad, upbeat and cry like a child but not in that order. Thank you Mr Gibson and all who made the best movie ever. 👏👏👏👏❤
I really enjoy and love the epic film Braveheart! "One of the best film by the great Mel Gibson", and I put the film with Gladiator, and Seven Samurai.
An incredibly deserved best picture. It deserved all its wins, but sad that James Horner didn’t win for the score too
Brave heart! wonderful movie
I wished the Academy had that expanded Best Picture system back than, I would’ve loved to see The Usual Suspects, Dead Man Walking, Leaving Las Vegas, and Toy Story nominated.
of course, it's the music from Braveheart
Still a movie of inpiration for me in 2020
Brave Heart the best movie. Thank you Gibson for this 👏
THE BEST FILM ALL THE TIME I LOVED
RIP Sidney Poitier
"Brave-Heart" is a truly Masterpiece
"Your heart is free. Have the courage to follow it" (William Wallace)
Deserves everything it got Braveheart what a movie and well done Mel gibbo lad
Braveheart is amazing. But what I can't understand even to this day is the fact that HEAT by Michael Mann and CASINO by Scorsese weren't nominated, I mean two Masterpieces of the 90's!
yeah heat didnt even receive one oscar but se7en is the biggest snub
*At **3:07**, Oprah and Steadman (behind Meryl Streep) start clapping when they realize that the camera is on them!*
I don't care who thinks what about Mel Gibson...this movie was phenomenal and Mel is a great actor and director!
And producer!
It's just they went up against a Juggernaut in Braveheart in 1995
Braveheart captures the cry of every human soul’s longing to be free from bondage
Actually the passion of the christ did that
Braveheart winning I 200% agree with what I don’t agree with is how heat didn’t get nominated for best picture and babe did
and director! Braveheart is one of the best movies i ever seen!
LMAO! I thought Sidney Poitier was doing the moonwalk at 0:29. I had to play it a few times to make sure. :D
That just made me laugh so damn hard. Well spotted. 😂
Haahhaah
