They were all assigned dancers to help them with their talent shows, and Shannel was the only one who didn't need those dancers. Her talent spoke for itself.
In my opinion, maybe including the dancers in the act was part of the challenge, so the queens who came in expecting to just do their thing on their own had to come up with something. And that'd be where Shannel faltered, because they just... Got down on one knee and clapped. That's what makes me think the challenge included coming up with something for the dancers to do, Shannel's act made them look unnecessary. Also her letting her cube down at the end looked uncontrolled

Plastique's was for sure entertaining, but to me it felt less about what she could do and more about "look at what I can buy" with her costume and props and sparklethrowing breast plate Top 3 for me was Angie, Shannel and Jorgeous/Gottmik, Gottmik had my favourite song, Angie had the best branding and comedy, and Shannel had the best actual talent

Vanjie and Angeria gave complete performances that branded themselves, told a story, and it entertained the judges. Plastique gave looks, okay choreography, and a 10 second lightsaber stunt and pyrotechnics that cost a crap ton of money that the other queens didn't churn out a crap ton of money for.
The only thing for me is plastique just showed her one weakness. I wish she would’ve came into the talent show and performed through her movements and face. Coming from Alyssa Edward’s family it pains me to see her not emoting in any lip syncs or her talent show and her dancing was often very stiff. I wanted my Asian queen to win so bad. But she built a reputation of not being a good performer and the talent show while the concept ate down her have never changed her lifts were so stiff, her pony tail was so thin and her light sabers lasted ten seconds. I just wanted her to give me the same level as she gives in her runways
Agree with Shannel but not Plastique. If you take away the gimmick of the reveal, pyrotechnics, the marshmallows and the lightsabers what do we get? Another same bitch track lip sync, which is not bad by any means, just not winning worthy either
I low key feel like the reason Plastique looked so pissed off when she wasn't announced in the top 3 was because it was the one lipsync she genuinely prepared for.

@@LP-ct9nk this isn't just a lip sync competition, Plastique did well to amazing in the challenges all season long (short for her snatch game) and had the best runway package in the history of the show. It was totally valid for her to expect to be in the top by the end.
It's so bizarre that Angie absolutely had the best track record and fully deserved to win the season, but the way she was edited the last few episodes and then the insane riggory of the finale suddenly made it feel like she shouldn't have been there. If it had been Angie, Roxxy and Plastique in the finale on the other hadn and it came down to Angie and Roxxy with Angie winning... that would felt completely right. But the rigging of Vanjie into the final and Angie being dragged along on the same "twist" completely undermined her win, which is completely unfair on her.
No FR it was like they kind of didn't want her to win but then remembered to do so. I was rooting for her so hard and while I am still going to defend her, it's just sad how productions screw not only themselves but then the queens as well :(

Angeria winning makes me so happy, I just wish they had set it up differently so it didn’t seem like she’s a weak winner when she was a threat on both seasons she competed on
Angeria was my winner pick for s14, from the start she had such a star pressence, when she lost i felt so tore but i knew she was gonna win an allstar season someday, then comes AS9 i thought this was her chance and she did so well but somehow production made it seem like she did not deserved it :(
The last minute rigging in the talent show completely flatlined the season for me how Shannel and plastique didn’t make top 2 for the talent show is wild to me. Left a bad taste in my mouth. This season showed me why no eliminations doesn’t work unless it’s for winners with very clear bttm performances that still get praise. Vanjie and Angeria were not top 2 for the talent show like the mouth drop I had was insane.
What’s craziest is if you actually give them the deserved win and the rest of the season stays the same, plastique and jorgeous take BOTH roxxxy and vanjies spots in the top 3 and that is crazy

At this point it's in Drag Race production's DNA to make the poor decisions that set the winner up to bad fan reception. Anyone could see from miles away that the 3 star final challenge would be hated again, and that the song choice for final lipsync would benefit the queen they weren't going to crown again. They WANT us to be mad at their choices. I hope they pay for the winner's therapy, cuz it must be hard being put in this situation.
I need production to be more responsible with their work like why would you edit your winner in such a way that fans would doubt and discredit them so much? If you want Angeria to be your winner why didn't you edit her to be that way? And now Angeria has to deal with people discrediting her win, deal with racism, deal with hate. Another part of the format that they need to retire is putting the variety show all the way at the end of the season. When it's the first challenge, it sets the tone for each contestant and gets you excited about what else you'll see from them in the competition. It also sets the contestants up for better performances because it's right out of the gate and they have full energy rather than at the end when they are mentally and physically drained. For some reason, when it's the very last challenge, it just feels like a throw away episode.
I agree, but i think they put it at the end because its easier to justify the riggory, since you can't really compare different talents... like, you cant really say that jorgeous danced at a better level than shannel's juggling, they are both awesome at what they do and did completely different numbers. Its kind of the new make over challenge for riggery and crowning whoever they want...
I watch Allstars purely becuase I am a fan of dragrace. I typically encourage newcomers to watch a regular season of drag race before watching allstars, as it's quite toned down. I think Allstars is truly for the superfans of dragrace, not the average viewer at this point. There is too much conflict between what the queens want, what production wants, and what the fans what, to truly make Allstars iconic again. Untucked was quite boring, and I'm not sure what the future holds for the franchise.

I personally think the reason it felt so rigged was because it WAS rigged, but also because it was obvious from the commercials pre-season who was going to win AND who was going to be Top 3. It was an entire season of fluff and the last few episodes were the "big threat to be overcome" plotline Survivor LOVES. The only thing they did well was learn to lean away from the "Jimbo/Sasha Show" nonsense that made those seasons actually painful to watch, but it was still painfully predictable regardless. For a while it's felt like they hire people who have never seen a reality show in their lives, but maybe it's not their fault because The Amazing Race isn't much better and last season of that, you could pick the winners just by noticing who they didn't interview the first episode. Idk, the Drag Race people have enough presence now that they could hire decent editors, but we might just be too far into "late-stage reality TV" for it really matter. We're so late-stage, next season, they're gonna actually off people who get voted out.
One thing that’s so wild for me about this season is that Nina West, one of the most beloved Miss Congenialities in the franchise, became clowned on so hard this season. People dunked on her pretty hard, like saying her Paint Ball outfit was the new LaLa Ri bag outfit (it wasn’t), and saying she wasn’t that funny. She’s out there doing SO much for the community, putting smiles on so many faces, and has performed with some amazing people. It’s insane to me that this is the trajectory she’s gone on, since she does deserve better.
I felt so bad for Nina. And I also dislike how everyone excused their behavior bu saying nina is a Zionist which was proven false but was spread around cause she interacted with an amy schumer post. 😭
That said, I started the season a bit of a Jorgeous "hater" (I really just thought she was a bit overrated, even as a lipsyncer), but she showed up in many challenges, like the rusical or even the roast, so huge props to her.
It’s controversial to say, but this season was really hard to get as dedicated to in comparison to others because (imo) there was no competition. The stakes should be higher like other seasons, a bit of an edge to it or something. Maybe having the badges possibly lost/swapped/etc if they don’t do well in a challenge. It would be cool if it had a mario-party type pre-mediation needed in terms of how many stars people have and who you should steal from if you have the chance. That at least brings strategy, rather than badges being handed out left and right. This is all for non-elim formats at least (imo, once again).
I just don’t think non-elimination works for Drag Race. It worked okay on All Winners for the most part but there was always an understanding that it was gonna be a different beast from other seasons due to the casting twist. The show needs girls to go for it to succeed, for it to feel like a competition. There are no stakes if a queen knows they’re not gonna win a challenge anyway so maybe they don’t have to try as hard since they’re not going anywhere anyway. It especially doesn’t work when you have every girl constantly getting positive critiques no matter what they do, it removes the competitive hierarchy needed for a season like this, and the stars didn’t help in creating that either since you have queens who do well but don’t win so they’re just lumped in with the other safe girls so who has the most stars doesn’t necessarily reflect how well they were doing. We can see that reflected in the backlash against Angeria’s win when she does do well throughout the competition but because she’s not top 2 every week, it doesn’t *feel* like she did as well as f.e. Roxxxy or Plastique, even when there were weeks she would’ve been considered to be in the “top” placement by a regular season’s standard. If this was a regular season, Plastique would’ve probably had to LSFYL at least twice as she was bad in Snatch Game and the acting challenge with Ru but because it’s not, those get largely dismissed and all we really see is her number of stars. Production’s insistence on having All Stars use a different format from the regular season’s format is killing the franchise. I just don’t get why they feel the need for it to be this other thing when you already stumbled on the best format for the show that has consistently worked with the main franchise.
I understand what you’re saying, but I like less competition in all stars seasons. I like that they just get to do great drag and fun challenges and we get to see all of these extremely talented queens for the entire season do what they do best. And to be honest, the top queen eliminating one of the bottoms is my least favorite competition formula… the whole “I’d like to have a conversation with the bottom queens before I decide” thing was always SO boring to me. If I have to hear another queen go on about “I have a fire under my ass. I have so much left to show. I’m working so hard” I’m gonna yawn… 😂
The Meeting in the Ladies Room had such a weird and slow pace. Knowing now about the tele prompter, it makes more sense. But the structure of the scene itself wouldn't work much better if they all knew their lines.
I thought it was so weird they used a teleprompter. It made them stand on an angle facing away from ru and it looked like they were shit talking someone else. It felt so iff and awkward. There was not that many lines for a teleprompter to be needed at all and they ruined that challenge.
about the point of "if you (producers) want them to win, at least set them up to succeed. Giving Jinkx Swish swish? giving Angeria rhythm nation?" I believe they did it on purpose. They WANT the win to be divisive. They want people to tweet and post about it. Jinkx clearly did the best on AS7, she had the most wins and most season highlights. Giving Monet a song with a Nicki verse will ALWAYS result in Monet winning, against pretty much anyone. They wanted that. Same goes for Angeria beating Roxxxy. They knew Roxxxy was the fan favorite this season. They knew she would win a lip sync against anyone in that cast, especially to a throwback song. But Angeria did better in challenges. She had no weak moments.
Thats really debatable, Roxxxy did faaaar better for me this season and had no declines, Angie was good, but not a winner imo. I would actually put her in third place, after Plastique. She is a better lip syncer, but for me the outfits of Plastique gave me much more gasps and excitment than anything Angie did. But yeah, this is what it is
Serena Cha Cha has proven you can do everything right, win the most challenges (tied), wear the most insane fashion, show so much growth, display your culture unabashedly and beautifully, but if the show doesn’t see you in their final plan, you will be cast aside.
I feel like a lot of commentators have missed all of the microaggressions directed towards Angie all season. There were moments from the other girls when my heart literally hurt for all the shots she took. Especially from Jorgeous who was supposed to be her friend calling her delusional and telling her that she stole the light. It gave jealous and insecure. Angeria was the most blocked queen and still earned all of her badges, slayed every lip sync and was hilarious, gorgeous and graceful the whole season. Amazing representation...the ones who get it, get it.
Angeria 100% deserved her win. She was consistently amazing all season. I dont get how people dont comprehend that. HOWEVER, Plastique, Angie, and Roxxxy should have been the top 3.
Hey hey I work in music licensing for TV! Regarding your question, typically, a show would have to pay additional fees when the song is used in multiple episodes, especially across different seasons. However, it is much easier to clear a song if it was already used in the show before. I’m guessing WOW was able to negotiate fees for the reuses at a cheaper rate than if they used new songs, since they had already used the songs in the past.
In the first episode, I think Angie was top 2 over Plastique because of the verse. Angie's verse was about saving the world and power of drag, which was part of the challenge, while Plastique talked about her waist and empire
I don't like how everyone is talking about Plastique not knowing the words to the Nicki Minaj song without acknowledging that Roxxxy also didn't know the words. This song is very fast and wordy. It's not an easy lip sync song so I can see why the cast of season 16 revolted against having it on their season. Hence, why BOTH queens didn't know the words. Roxxxy was just able to hide it better because she knew a few more verses.
It’s very perplexing because both Roxxxy and Sapphira had some of the biggest “winner” edits we’ve ever seen. Idk if they’re switching it last minute or just think the surprise crowning is good tv but it discredits deserving winners
I find a huge parallel between the storylines of the winners in UK2 and AS9. I absolutely love Lawrence and Angeria and I was rooting for them to win, but at the end it felt kinda weird bc you were prepared for Roxxxy and Bimini to take the crown
I was thinking about this too. Lawrence was so strong in the first half of the season, but Bimini destroyed the second half while Lawrence was struggling. The storylines have to make sense, or it isn't satisfying.
I think Angeria’s “please listen carefully, I’m not the enemy. I’m just a super queen expressing my authenticity” not only won her the challenge, but also solidified her immediately as a front-runner for the competition.
The edit this season was not fair for Angeria the eventual winner. It feels like they didn't even try to make it make sense. It is such a disservice to Angeria who had no say in if she won over Roxxxy or not.

I really disagree with you for the roast. I thought the funniest was by far Angeria. And I don’t think the laugh count always means they should win, especially since everyone got a laugh for pretty much every joke they did. The other top placement could’ve been Jorgeous instead of Plastique, as I found Plastique’s delivery very rehearsed and it was obvious she didn’t write the jokes. But Angeria was the clear winner to me 🤷.
Not too mention, you can tell both Plastique and Jorgeous had their jokes written for them. Angeria, Nina, and Shannel were probably the only ones that didn't have their jokes written for them. We all have opinions. And that's great. Angeria was my fav for the talent show and I 100% felt she deserved to win and i wanted Roxxxy to win going in. Taste is personal. Plastique not winning a lip sync made me not care if she made the top 3 because there was no way she was going to win at all.
Something I think everyone should keep in mind is how much revenue the Drag Race franchise generates. I don't know what the number is, but it's probably a frightening amount of money. The stipend they give to the queens is a tiny expense in the grand scheme of things. The prize payouts are probably likewise insignificant, but especially this season, where that's covered by a third party. So any time I consider if the show could afford the rights to new lip sync tracks or whatever, I think, oh yeah, budget is never an excuse.
Plastique coming back in a non elimination make alot of sense. Because she has so much to redeem from her last season. Known as the pretty face corset nothing else girl. Now she will be remembered as a fashion queen.
to say Angeria's performance was forgettable is heresy... Her and Plastique's performances were the only ones I had to pause, walk around a bit, rewind, and play again because it was everything right.

I’m sorry but the people saying plastique should’ve won the season truly makes no sense. She elevated her drag her so much in terms of runways and even redeemed herself in some comedy challenges. But she also showed that she’s not the most versatile this season. Her being dead last for snatch game and acting, her losing every lip sync very justified, and her weakness of not performing and actually relying on remaining pretty. Like she threw these lip syncs all season and thinking that would bring her to the finale to win 200k… really it made production see her as a liability in the finale lip sync. And truly Shannel, Vanji, and angeria all had talents that had comedy were paced well the voice for angeria sounded amazing and most of all they performed through their faces. Not just be pretty but fave comedy gave grace and flowed and plastique just doesn’t have that. It was a great talent but had some faults. Drag Race needs new story producers because holy shit have they been doing it so bad. It's not the editors, they're just constructing what they've been told to by production as well as they can. Nymphia Wind and Angeria Paris VanMichaels are incredibly deserving winners who absolutely earned it - But both seasons are constructed so poorly that Nymphia suddenly winning against Sapphira feels bizarre and like it was a last minute change because she had the most fan support, and Angeria winning at the end feels like a forced conclusion. Neither of these are actually the case, as you said, this season was Angie vs. Roxxxy and either winning is entirely correct and deserved, and in S16's case either of the top two also could've taken it and felt correct, but they put together seasons that struggle to really keep a consistent through line and then reach a conclusion that seemed to be dropped at some point (Nymphia when she disappears for half the mid-season in the narrative, and Angeria at the end when it becomes all about Roxxxy). It's so fucking frustrating too because it then encourages the hateful disgusting racist """"fans"""" to viciously attack Angeria and pretend like they ever cared about Roxxxy and hadn't sent her death threats before for S5 and AS2. Angeria is an incredible drag artist and an absolutely deserving winner who I'm so happy has a crown now - Roxxxy will always be a legend whose crown feels inherent without her having to actually win it. And I wish anyone on this show's production team could make a halfway competent portrayal of that that doesn't ultimately have half the cast/everyone coming out losing for being a part of this mess.
If Angeria should've replaced anyone in the Snatch Game episode, it should've been Nina. Her Liberace was far less Liberace than Shannel's and we also wouldn't of had to watch her abomination of a lipsync against Gottmik.
I am still SO gutted for Roxxxy. I love her so much, she’s really a foundational character in the mythology of Drag Race. Angeria is phenomenal, but I am still Team Roxxxy.

If I ever re-watch this season, I'm gonna stop after episode 10. I want to end on a high note, and this was the best episode of the season for me. I was actually happy to see Shannel get a badge. And everyone had a great runway look.

I definitely think she deserved to make top 3, but some of these wins people say she deserved, I’m really confused about. Especially the talent show. She had arguably the second/third most underwhelming performance of the night in my opinion depending on whether or not Gottmik was actually playing the guitar. The unique talent she was presenting was being moved around the stage by men and having parts of her outfit removed/turned on and then people are raving about the marshmallow bit?? I thought it was pretty clear that Shannel and Jorgeous deserved the top 2 for that episode for their talents.
This is how i felt all season. Like yes she was robbed the makeover, but otherwise i felt nothing whenever she performs. Her emotes r even worse than jorgeous
People are just drawn in by the fashion and her looks. Drag fans in general are also going more for looks rather than substance/subversiness nowadays so unless she wants to plastique doesn’t necessarily have to improve her weaknesses that might’ve gotten her dragged a decade ago

You obviously want to find a way for Tiara to win. Good for you. Shame she can't lip sync. And how did Nina lose fans. Maybe she didn't gain any but lose. I don't think. The season was rigged for Roxxy and Vanjie to get to the final. But the fact neither got the win in the end says a lot.

K I’m not gonna focus on the discourse that’s been talked to death but I’m still gonna keep saying it. A majority of the fan base still has an overwhelming bias towards a certain era of the show and it is not Angeria’s fault she isn’t from seasons 4-8. Fans are going to have to get over that because honestly I think it’s likely Alyssa doesn’t win either. The show crowns queens to prop up not just the queen but also the franchise/season/era the queen comes from as well as their collaborators. So much goes into it. I do think a good chunk of fans had an open mind but also a lot of fans made their mind up about the season and were going to be upset if the prophecy of the S5 final 3 wasn’t fulfilled. lol
while I'm not 100% pleased with how this season played out, I'm totally happy Angeria won, glad we got to see such an amazing showcase of fashion from a solid cast, and, well... good for WoW for getting that tax write off I guess lmao 💀
I think one of the worst parts of production rigging these allstars seasons so hard is the fact it completely disincentivizes queens from wanting to return to the show. This sentiment is absolutely reasonable cause what's the point of proving yourself as an actually strong competitor when production can just rig your performances and push anyone else but you to the top
They could have solved this finale problem with giving both Angeria and Roxxxy the crown. Not only would have been a huge benefit to the charities, and both Angeria and Roxxxy deserved it.
Your review was spot on! I think it’s what did not clicked with me this season. I get that it is reality TV but I don’t like seeing queens doing everything right and trying their best don’t get the flowers they deserve. I watch this show to see drag artists perform and show their artistry and personality, and the amount of twists and riggory leave me upset almost every episode. It also feels like the competition is not about talent or about who does better in a challenge but who is more liked by Ru. Maybe if the storyline was better told this season Angeria winning would be better received but it feels a little like UK2 where the winner did better only in the first half and then winning at the end feels off. And Plastique… Bless her soul, she was the clear standout of the season, she showed so much talent and versatility, even excelling in challenges that you would not expect for her to succeed in, but since she was not Ru’s favorite she was snubbed. I am so proud of every contestant for their run but the final decision was a choice 💀

Bruhhhh the way it felt like the producers rigged Angeria to win a competition she was one of the front runners to win anyway (imho) is an absolute gag. Personally, I was hoping for a Roxxxy win and while I'm ecstatic for Miss Angeria Paris Van Michaels Dupree Dubois Davenport who is instantly a favourite winner for me...production has just been so so messy with All Star seasons and I fear this might diminish Angie's success.
Plastique did not deserve to be high in the roast, she was constantly looking at her notes, her delivery was off kilter and it was obvious she didn't write many of them. I also believe Shannel should have been in the top 3 over her. No hate, plastique is talented asf, but there is a bit of bias showing. Angie deserved her win, she dominated the comp, but the edit did her dirty. Unfair to such a talented performer
Agree so hard. We were in a hotel room in our cosplay at an anime convention watching with some friends who had never seen a drag race episode before and they were GAGGED when Plastique got no flowers after the insane talent and runway showings. Then the lipsync aired we were just happy that Roxxxy was finally gonna get her crown... I LOVE Anjeria and Im very upset that the edit made her win feel weird.
I’d be interested to wait to see what they do in Canada 5. I would like them to keep the “beaver” twist as an all stars thing and maybe implement it to the regular all stars
Unfortunately I think the problems with this season are indicative of a lot of the larger problems with Drag Race production as a whole. The downfall of Drag Race will eminently be brought by their own production and their own reluctance to just reward the queens that perform the best in favor of rewarding the queens that they think will create better storylines. I don't understand how after SIXTEEN YEARS there can still be such a huge disconnect between the RPDR production team and what the fans actually want to see especially when there are literally THOUSANDS of fans online laying out exactly what does and doesn't work and what the fans do and don't want to see but they just consistently ignore us. I think the decline in quality of All Stars is apparent and with them having to make such huge changes to the format to just get queens to even agree to be on it in the first place I think they need to step and and actually look at the mistakes they keep making. Like whats the point of All Stars even continuing if the queens are just getting a free pass for the entire season and not putting in any effort to perform well in the challenges. It's so boring and angering to watch and will eventually turn their fanbase against them.

I feel like production chooses a favorite when editing and then ru chooses his favorite after the season is aired and the finale is still being edited. Mainly for the main season not all stars. I think they noticed how much buzz the main season got and tried it again? I’m not quite sure when exactly they’d be in the process of editing all stars when the new season is airing

They were all assigned dancers to help them with their talent shows, and Shannel was the only one who didn't need those dancers. Her talent spoke for itself.
In my opinion, maybe including the dancers in the act was part of the challenge, so the queens who came in expecting to just do their thing on their own had to come up with something. And that'd be where Shannel faltered, because they just... Got down on one knee and clapped.
That's what makes me think the challenge included coming up with something for the dancers to do, Shannel's act made them look unnecessary. Also her letting her cube down at the end looked uncontrolled

Plastique's was for sure entertaining, but to me it felt less about what she could do and more about "look at what I can buy" with her costume and props and sparklethrowing breast plate
Top 3 for me was Angie, Shannel and Jorgeous/Gottmik, Gottmik had my favourite song, Angie had the best branding and comedy, and Shannel had the best actual talent

Vanjie and Angeria gave complete performances that branded themselves, told a story, and it entertained the judges.
Plastique gave looks, okay choreography, and a 10 second lightsaber stunt and pyrotechnics that cost a crap ton of money that the other queens didn't churn out a crap ton of money for.
The only thing for me is plastique just showed her one weakness. I wish she would’ve came into the talent show and performed through her movements and face. Coming from Alyssa Edward’s family it pains me to see her not emoting in any lip syncs or her talent show and her dancing was often very stiff. I wanted my Asian queen to win so bad. But she built a reputation of not being a good performer and the talent show while the concept ate down her have never changed her lifts were so stiff, her pony tail was so thin and her light sabers lasted ten seconds. I just wanted her to give me the same level as she gives in her runways
Agree with Shannel but not Plastique. If you take away the gimmick of the reveal, pyrotechnics, the marshmallows and the lightsabers what do we get? Another same bitch track lip sync, which is not bad by any means, just not winning worthy either

It's so bizarre that Angie absolutely had the best track record and fully deserved to win the season, but the way she was edited the last few episodes and then the insane riggory of the finale suddenly made it feel like she shouldn't have been there. If it had been Angie, Roxxy and Plastique in the finale on the other hadn and it came down to Angie and Roxxy with Angie winning... that would felt completely right. But the rigging of Vanjie into the final and Angie being dragged along on the same "twist" completely undermined her win, which is completely unfair on her.

I think the reason there was so much confusion and frustration at the crowning is because of Angie’s edit, she was given the delusional edit.
No FR it was like they kind of didn't want her to win but then remembered to do so. I was rooting for her so hard and while I am still going to defend her, it's just sad how productions screw not only themselves but then the queens as well :(

The last minute rigging in the talent show completely flatlined the season for me how Shannel and plastique didn’t make top 2 for the talent show is wild to me. Left a bad taste in my mouth. This season showed me why no eliminations doesn’t work unless it’s for winners with very clear bttm performances that still get praise. Vanjie and Angeria were not top 2 for the talent show like the mouth drop I had was insane.
I'll never forgive them for not crowning Jorgeous and Plastique the winners of EP4.

At this point it's in Drag Race production's DNA to make the poor decisions that set the winner up to bad fan reception. Anyone could see from miles away that the 3 star final challenge would be hated again, and that the song choice for final lipsync would benefit the queen they weren't going to crown again. They WANT us to be mad at their choices. I hope they pay for the winner's therapy, cuz it must be hard being put in this situation.
I need production to be more responsible with their work like why would you edit your winner in such a way that fans would doubt and discredit them so much? If you want Angeria to be your winner why didn't you edit her to be that way? And now Angeria has to deal with people discrediting her win, deal with racism, deal with hate. Another part of the format that they need to retire is putting the variety show all the way at the end of the season. When it's the first challenge, it sets the tone for each contestant and gets you excited about what else you'll see from them in the competition. It also sets the contestants up for better performances because it's right out of the gate and they have full energy rather than at the end when they are mentally and physically drained. For some reason, when it's the very last challenge, it just feels like a throw away episode.
I agree, but i think they put it at the end because its easier to justify the riggory, since you can't really compare different talents... like, you cant really say that jorgeous danced at a better level than shannel's juggling, they are both awesome at what they do and did completely different numbers.

I watch Allstars purely becuase I am a fan of dragrace. I typically encourage newcomers to watch a regular season of drag race before watching allstars, as it's quite toned down. I think Allstars is truly for the superfans of dragrace, not the average viewer at this point. There is too much conflict between what the queens want, what production wants, and what the fans what, to truly make Allstars iconic again. Untucked was quite boring, and I'm not sure what the future holds for the franchise.

the reason it felt rigged is because Vangie was at the top 3. if it was either Jorgeous, Plastique or Shanel, everything would feel right. dont get me wrong, i love Vangie but she wasn't build-up throughout the season.
I personally think the reason it felt so rigged was because it WAS rigged, but also because it was obvious from the commercials pre-season who was going to win AND who was going to be Top 3. It was an entire season of fluff and the last few episodes were the "big threat to be overcome" plotline Survivor LOVES. The only thing they did well was learn to lean away from the "Jimbo/Sasha Show" nonsense that made those seasons actually painful to watch, but it was still painfully predictable regardless. For a while it's felt like they hire people who have never seen a reality show in their lives, but maybe it's not their fault because The Amazing Race isn't much better and last season of that, you could pick the winners just by noticing who they didn't interview the first episode. Idk, the Drag Race people have enough presence now that they could hire decent editors, but we might just be too far into "late-stage reality TV" for it really matter. We're so late-stage, next season, they're gonna actually off people who get voted out.
One thing that’s so wild for me about this season is that Nina West, one of the most beloved Miss Congenialities in the franchise, became clowned on so hard this season. People dunked on her pretty hard, like saying her Paint Ball outfit was the new LaLa Ri bag outfit (it wasn’t), and saying she wasn’t that funny. She’s out there doing SO much for the community, putting smiles on so many faces, and has performed with some amazing people. It’s insane to me that this is the trajectory she’s gone on, since she does deserve better.

That said, I started the season a bit of a Jorgeous "hater" (I really just thought she was a bit overrated, even as a lipsyncer), but she showed up in many challenges, like the rusical or even the roast, so huge props to her.

It’s controversial to say, but this season was really hard to get as dedicated to in comparison to others because (imo) there was no competition. The stakes should be higher like other seasons, a bit of an edge to it or something. Maybe having the badges possibly lost/swapped/etc if they don’t do well in a challenge. It would be cool if it had a mario-party type pre-mediation needed in terms of how many stars people have and who you should steal from if you have the chance. That at least brings strategy, rather than badges being handed out left and right. This is all for non-elim formats at least (imo, once again).
I just don’t think non-elimination works for Drag Race. It worked okay on All Winners for the most part but there was always an understanding that it was gonna be a different beast from other seasons due to the casting twist. The show needs girls to go for it to succeed, for it to feel like a competition. There are no stakes if a queen knows they’re not gonna win a challenge anyway so maybe they don’t have to try as hard since they’re not going anywhere anyway. It especially doesn’t work when you have every girl constantly getting positive critiques no matter what they do, it removes the competitive hierarchy needed for a season like this, and the stars didn’t help in creating that either since you have queens who do well but don’t win so they’re just lumped in with the other safe girls so who has the most stars doesn’t necessarily reflect how well they were doing. We can see that reflected in the backlash against Angeria’s win when she does do well throughout the competition but because she’s not top 2 every week, it doesn’t *feel* like she did as well as f.e. Roxxxy or Plastique, even when there were weeks she would’ve been considered to be in the “top” placement by a regular season’s standard. If this was a regular season, Plastique would’ve probably had to LSFYL at least twice as she was bad in Snatch Game and the acting challenge with Ru but because it’s not, those get largely dismissed and all we really see is her number of stars. Production’s insistence on having All Stars use a different format from the regular season’s format is killing the franchise. I just don’t get why they feel the need for it to be this other thing when you already stumbled on the best format for the show that has consistently worked with the main franchise.

I like that they just get to do great drag and fun challenges and we get to see all of these extremely talented queens for the entire season do what they do best. And to be honest, the top queen eliminating one of the bottoms is my least favorite competition formula… the whole “I’d like to have a conversation with the bottom queens before I decide” thing was always SO boring to me. If I have to hear another queen go on about “I have a fire under my ass. I have so much left to show. I’m working so hard” I’m gonna yawn… 😂
The Meeting in the Ladies Room had such a weird and slow pace. Knowing now about the tele prompter, it makes more sense. But the structure of the scene itself wouldn't work much better if they all knew their lines.
I thought it was so weird they used a teleprompter. It made them stand on an angle facing away from ru and it looked like they were shit talking someone else. It felt so iff and awkward. There was not that many lines for a teleprompter to be needed at all and they ruined that challenge.

Jinkx clearly did the best on AS7, she had the most wins and most season highlights. Giving Monet a song with a Nicki verse will ALWAYS result in Monet winning, against pretty much anyone. They wanted that.
Same goes for Angeria beating Roxxxy. They knew Roxxxy was the fan favorite this season. They knew she would win a lip sync against anyone in that cast, especially to a throwback song. But Angeria did better in challenges. She had no weak moments.
Thats really debatable, Roxxxy did faaaar better for me this season and had no declines, Angie was good, but not a winner imo. I would actually put her in third place, after Plastique. She is a better lip syncer, but for me the outfits of Plastique gave me much more gasps and excitment than anything Angie did. But yeah, this is what it is

I feel like a lot of commentators have missed all of the microaggressions directed towards Angie all season. There were moments from the other girls when my heart literally hurt for all the shots she took. Especially from Jorgeous who was supposed to be her friend calling her delusional and telling her that she stole the light. It gave jealous and insecure. Angeria was the most blocked queen and still earned all of her badges, slayed every lip sync and was hilarious, gorgeous and graceful the whole season. Amazing representation...the ones who get it, get it.

Hey hey I work in music licensing for TV! Regarding your question, typically, a show would have to pay additional fees when the song is used in multiple episodes, especially across different seasons. However, it is much easier to clear a song if it was already used in the show before. I’m guessing WOW was able to negotiate fees for the reuses at a cheaper rate than if they used new songs, since they had already used the songs in the past.
In the first episode, I think Angie was top 2 over Plastique because of the verse. Angie's verse was about saving the world and power of drag, which was part of the challenge, while Plastique talked about her waist and empire

I don't like how everyone is talking about Plastique not knowing the words to the Nicki Minaj song without acknowledging that Roxxxy also didn't know the words. This song is very fast and wordy. It's not an easy lip sync song so I can see why the cast of season 16 revolted against having it on their season. Hence, why BOTH queens didn't know the words. Roxxxy was just able to hide it better because she knew a few more verses.

I find a huge parallel between the storylines of the winners in UK2 and AS9. I absolutely love Lawrence and Angeria and I was rooting for them to win, but at the end it felt kinda weird bc you were prepared for Roxxxy and Bimini to take the crown
I was thinking about this too. Lawrence was so strong in the first half of the season, but Bimini destroyed the second half while Lawrence was struggling. The storylines have to make sense, or it isn't satisfying.
I think Angeria’s “please listen carefully, I’m not the enemy. I’m just a super queen expressing my authenticity” not only won her the challenge, but also solidified her immediately as a front-runner for the competition.
The edit this season was not fair for Angeria the eventual winner. It feels like they didn't even try to make it make sense. It is such a disservice to Angeria who had no say in if she won over Roxxxy or not.

I really disagree with you for the roast. I thought the funniest was by far Angeria. The whole point of the song is about drag and expressing yourself and how we have to band together.

shannel may have not had a stand out moment in the rusical but i still believe she deserved that win she was consistently great in her acting especially her expressions. i’m happy they gave her the win, it was a great rusical and i honestly think they all could have won except for angie and nina

We all have opinions. And that's great. Angeria was my fav for the talent show and I 100% felt she deserved to win and i wanted Roxxxy to win going in. Taste is personal. Plastique not winning a lip sync made me not care if she made the top 3 because there was no way she was going to win at all.
Something I think everyone should keep in mind is how much revenue the Drag Race franchise generates. I don't know what the number is, but it's probably a frightening amount of money. The stipend they give to the queens is a tiny expense in the grand scheme of things. The prize payouts are probably likewise insignificant, but especially this season, where that's covered by a third party. So any time I consider if the show could afford the rights to new lip sync tracks or whatever, I think, oh yeah, budget is never an excuse.

Plastique coming back in a non elimination make alot of sense. Because she has so much to redeem from her last season. Known as the pretty face corset nothing else girl. Now she will be remembered as a fashion queen.

I think there's a genuine argument for Plastique to win every challenge besides snatch game which is really crazy, I don't think any other season has a queen like that.
I’m sorry but the people saying plastique should’ve won the season truly makes no sense. She elevated her drag her so much in terms of runways and even redeemed herself in some comedy challenges. But she also showed that she’s not the most versatile this season. Her being dead last for snatch game and acting, her losing every lip sync very justified, and her weakness of not performing and actually relying on remaining pretty. Like she threw these lip syncs all season and thinking that would bring her to the finale to win 200k… really it made production see her as a liability in the finale lip sync. And truly Shannel, Vanji, and angeria all had talents that had comedy were paced well the voice for angeria sounded amazing and most of all they performed through their faces. Not just be pretty but fave comedy gave grace and flowed and plastique just doesn’t have that. It was a great talent but had some faults. And if she was finale three she wasn’t beating any of those girls to rhythm nation let’s be so fr

Drag Race needs new story producers because holy shit have they been doing it so bad. It's not the editors, they're just constructing what they've been told to by production as well as they can. Nymphia Wind and Angeria Paris VanMichaels are incredibly deserving winners who absolutely earned it - But both seasons are constructed so poorly that Nymphia suddenly winning against Sapphira feels bizarre and like it was a last minute change because she had the most fan support, and Angeria winning at the end feels like a forced conclusion. Neither of these are actually the case, as you said, this season was Angie vs. Roxxxy and either winning is entirely correct and deserved, and in S16's case either of the top two also could've taken it and felt correct, but they put together seasons that struggle to really keep a consistent through line and then reach a conclusion that seemed to be dropped at some point (Nymphia when she disappears for half the mid-season in the narrative, and Angeria at the end when it becomes all about Roxxxy).
It's so fucking frustrating too because it then encourages the hateful disgusting racist """"fans"""" to viciously attack Angeria and pretend like they ever cared about Roxxxy and hadn't sent her death threats before for S5 and AS2. Angeria is an incredible drag artist and an absolutely deserving winner who I'm so happy has a crown now - Roxxxy will always be a legend whose crown feels inherent without her having to actually win it. And I wish anyone on this show's production team could make a halfway competent portrayal of that that doesn't ultimately have half the cast/everyone coming out losing for being a part of this mess.
If Angeria should've replaced anyone in the Snatch Game episode, it should've been Nina. Her Liberace was far less Liberace than Shannel's and we also wouldn't of had to watch her abomination of a lipsync against Gottmik.
I am still SO gutted for Roxxxy. I love her so much, she’s really a foundational character in the mythology of Drag Race. Angeria is phenomenal, but I am still Team Roxxxy.

If I ever re-watch this season, I'm gonna stop after episode 10. I want to end on a high note, and this was the best episode of the season for me. I was actually happy to see Shannel get a badge. And everyone had a great runway look.

I don’t know if I’m subconsciously a Plastique Tiara hater or what but I was NOT seeing the same things it seemed like other people were seeing watching her this season. I definitely think she deserved to make top 3, but some of these wins people say she deserved, I’m really confused about. Especially the talent show. She had arguably the second/third most underwhelming performance of the night in my opinion depending on whether or not Gottmik was actually playing the guitar. The unique talent she was presenting was being moved around the stage by men and having parts of her outfit removed/turned on and then people are raving about the marshmallow bit?? I thought it was pretty clear that Shannel and Jorgeous deserved the top 2 for that episode for their talents.

K I’m not gonna focus on the discourse that’s been talked to death but I’m still gonna keep saying it. A majority of the fan base still has an overwhelming bias towards a certain era of the show and it is not Angeria’s fault she isn’t from seasons 4-8. Fans are going to have to get over that because honestly I think it’s likely Alyssa doesn’t win either. The show crowns queens to prop up not just the queen but also the franchise/season/era the queen comes from as well as their collaborators. So much goes into it. I do think a good chunk of fans had an open mind but also a lot of fans made their mind up about the season and were going to be upset if the prophecy of the S5 final 3 wasn’t fulfilled. lol

I think one of the worst parts of production rigging these allstars seasons so hard is the fact it completely disincentivizes queens from wanting to return to the show. This sentiment is absolutely reasonable cause what's the point of proving yourself as an actually strong competitor when production can just rig your performances and push anyone else but you to the top
They could have solved this finale problem with giving both Angeria and Roxxxy the crown. Not only would have been a huge benefit to the charities, and both Angeria and Roxxxy deserved it.
Your review was spot on! I think it’s what did not clicked with me this season. I get that it is reality TV but I don’t like seeing queens doing everything right and trying their best don’t get the flowers they deserve. I watch this show to see drag artists perform and show their artistry and personality, and the amount of twists and riggory leave me upset almost every episode. It also feels like the competition is not about talent or about who does better in a challenge but who is more liked by Ru. Maybe if the storyline was better told this season Angeria winning would be better received but it feels a little like UK2 where the winner did better only in the first half and then winning at the end feels off. And Plastique… Bless her soul, she was the clear standout of the season, she showed so much talent and versatility, even excelling in challenges that you would not expect for her to succeed in, but since she was not Ru’s favorite she was snubbed. I am so proud of every contestant for their run but the final decision was a choice 💀

Bruhhhh the way it felt like the producers rigged Angeria to win a competition she was one of the front runners to win anyway (imho) is an absolute gag.
Personally, I was hoping for a Roxxxy win and while I'm ecstatic for Miss Angeria Paris Van Michaels Dupree Dubois Davenport who is instantly a favourite winner for me...production has just been so so messy with All Star seasons and I fear this might diminish Angie's success.

Plastique did not deserve to be high in the roast, she was constantly looking at her notes, her delivery was off kilter and it was obvious she didn't write many of them. Angie deserved her win, she dominated the comp, but the edit did her dirty. Unfair to such a talented performer

We were in a hotel room in our cosplay at an anime convention watching with some friends who had never seen a drag race episode before and they were GAGGED when Plastique got no flowers after the insane talent and runway showings. Then the lipsync aired we were just happy that Roxxxy was finally gonna get her crown...

Unfortunately I think the problems with this season are indicative of a lot of the larger problems with Drag Race production as a whole. The downfall of Drag Race will eminently be brought by their own production and their own reluctance to just reward the queens that perform the best in favor of rewarding the queens that they think will create better storylines. I don't understand how after SIXTEEN YEARS there can still be such a huge disconnect between the RPDR production team and what the fans actually want to see especially when there are literally THOUSANDS of fans online laying out exactly what does and doesn't work and what the fans do and don't want to see but they just consistently ignore us. I think the decline in quality of All Stars is apparent and with them having to make such huge changes to the format to just get queens to even agree to be on it in the first place I think they need to step and and actually look at the mistakes they keep making. Like whats the point of All Stars even continuing if the queens are just getting a free pass for the entire season and not putting in any effort to perform well in the challenges. It's so boring and angering to watch and will eventually turn their fanbase against them.

I feel like production chooses a favorite when editing and then ru chooses his favorite after the season is aired and the finale is still being edited. Mainly for the main season not all stars. I think they noticed how much buzz the main season got and tried it again? I’m not quite sure when exactly they’d be in the process of editing all stars when the new season is airing
