The season that reinvigorated a franchise, Rupaul's Drag Race UK 5 truly blew everyone's expectations out of the water. An incredible cast, great challenges, lip syncs, and pretty minimal riggory by UK standards, this all led to one of the most successful seasons yet.
With cries of riggory against fan favorites like Cara Melle, Banksie, and Kate Butch, we'll break down every episode of the season and determine what was rigged and what wasn't. They’d just done it on drag race down under and they butchered it. Same with kate bush on the U.S
I can only see UK queens performing those artists well.
They probs didn’t use it because they already used it on the Rita Menu Vs Ivory Glaze lip sync from Down Under 3
I was kind of glad they didn't do it. Every time Sophie is in any show, it's always Murder. Can't be nice to be reduced to a one hit wonder.

Kinda crazy how from pre-season spoilers we all thought this season would be so messy, with it coming off two mediocre UK seasons, the cast being reduced from 12 to 10 and the disqualified queen who was edited out. How we we were proved so wrong and this literally became one of the best seasons ever, and had one of the best casts and top 3’s

Maybe because I'm English, I found Ginger's Barbara Cartland absolutely hilarious so I'm assuming it might be a cultural thing? I also loved her runway ngl, I loved her different take on the theme.
But I completely agree on everything else. UK5 is possibly my favourite drag race season of all time? It was easily the best season of 2023, probably also better than anything in 2022 as well. I might actually prefer it over UK2 which has held the title of my favourite season since it aired. What an incredible cast.

Can we get a UK all stars season, I know we have UK Vs the world but I’d prefer an all stars specifically for UK queens, doesn’t feel fair that the US is the only country that gets their own all stars because we definitely have enough queens who could return

Naomi’s bottom placement and elimination in episode 4, reminds me of Shuga Cain’s bottom placement and elimination in episode 10 of season 11, because they were both sacrificed to save a queen who was worse than them.

Just to let you know, there was a non-elimnation in the 1st episode because a queen dropped out due to illness and then again during the girl groups after the one with allegations was disqualified.
I think the roast was gladiator themed as the BBC had a gladiators reboot in the pipeline! They love their synergy
I too noticed the slight change in the outfits of the ball, I think that simply many of the girls already expected a crazy photoshoot as the first challenge, and brought a look that they could get more comfortable quickly. Some of the girls didnt and maybe just took of a layer or two to be able to dance better
The problem this season was production counted their chickens before they hatched. The 3 favorites were clear from episode 1.
And one by one, all three of them got eliminated.
The best thing this season was that the charisma of the entire cast was unparalleled. They all have bright futures ahead of them.

I think the DeDe comment in the first ep was “controversial” because she didn’t hesitate or try to avoid answering the question 🤷🏻♀️

meeting over half the cast at drag con uk and seeing that all these queens are absolute superstars and are going to do amazing things (if you love kate listen to her podcast queers gone by) plus meeting ginger and seeing how sweet and kind she is and truly my 2nd favorite in this cast as well as a mighty winner for DR UK an holding a drag race crown and wearing it is a moment i will cherish forever
i can’t wait for UKVSTW2 “the unrigging” where Mayhem wins for going out the box in her talent show and demolishes the rest of the season, taking home the crown

Such a likeable cast really needed an incredibly unpleasant human being to spice things up and Vicki provided that with aplomb.
I honestly loved Dedelicious so much because she gave me what I wanted from Crystal Versace- the confidence, the charisma, the nerve. And her versatility in her lip syncs were amazing

Right?? Like I just don't understand what she said that was even 'shady'... she sincerely just seemed confused and when she asked what Cara was talking about, she flipped. It might be a US/UK norms thing, but I was just as bewildered as Tomara the whole time.
@@TenArashi lets not forget if it even was considered shady, which it isn't. Cara started it by saying "put your hand down" to Tomara when Ru asked who sewed. But oh no the Goddess couldn't take it when it was done to her.
love this video!! uk5 was a breath of fresh air, truly.
but i feel like we forget that design challenges are not just about sewing. the goal is to design a tasteful, well-constructed garment that not only looks good on you, but also represents you and your style as a drag artist. when i saw tomara's dress, i knew exactly who she was the second she hit the runway: sex, legs, and bombastic dancing. her garment had color, movement, and i think it was very fashion forward without looking cheap or undone. it was constructed perfectly for her body and proportions. but cara melle was in the complete opposite boat in every way. it felt like diva saw a fake parrot and tried to make a matching dress instead of thinking about who cara is and how she could translate her blackness, trans-ness, southern-ness, or really anything related to her as a human into her look. ofc, this is all subjective too, but an awesome video as always :))
and i stand by this opinion for the design challenge jorgeous won on s14 since it's also about the undeniable charisma you show in your runway presentation 🧍🏾♂️🧎🏾♂️
Sort of agree with this, yes, it was a piece of fabric and a feather but it was 100% Tomará, she really sold the fantasy and even if it’s considered a design challenge it’s about branding too. Cara's outfit was cute (half of it) but it’s scream “Cara Melle”.
i loved how surprising was the season, like the first two challenge winners ended up being early outs, it was hard to predcit anything after that

This whole cast could show up on any vs the world, global all stars, UK all stars (if they ever give that to us) and it would be so right.

I would argue that Cheryl is more the UK Alyssa personally but she was chaotic in the best way possible. Edit, I prefer girl groups that are even. I think Ginger's last two wins shouldn't have been hers but she was robbed in other places. Ginger wasn't funny but Michael literally was robbed of being high as it was Catherine Tait to a T
The thing is Snatch game isn’t an impersonation challenge, but rather a comedy challenge foremost…you can’t win using someone else’s material, as it was a good impression
I actually loved Ginger's snatch game...I was actually rooting for Kate Butch but I loved her snatch game
I believe the second ball look was modification of their entrance look (like in one if the Canadian seasons, 3 maybe?), but since they had to cut around the no-no queen the setup and workroom aspects of that were lost so it was super confusing

Murder on the Dance floor was just used in Down Under Season 3. The 3rd episode (2nd lipsync of the season), it was pretty fierce, but I would’ve preferred to see Cara and Tomara go at it lmfao.

The biggest riggory was the fact they did'nt use a Sophie-Ellis Baxter song while she was THEREEEEEE 😢😭😥
Post-season, I’ve grown fond of Cara Melle but nobody in the thought she was a winner pick and lots of people didn’t like her by the time she left. At the start of the show, Cara was seen as the underdog (we all saw the rigging of the design challenge) but after she aligned herself with Vicky in gaslight-gate, the writing was on the wall. Her rep on the season never recovered from that (though it wasn’t quite as bad as Vicky). We started off believing Dede was the villain and disliking her but we all grew to like her as the season went on. Vicky started off on a meh foot but consistently became less and less likeable each week to the point where, at least in my house, we sang “ding dong the witch is dead” when she went home - nobody in the UK wanted her to do well after her personality was exposed. We all quite liked snatch game, as far as I can tell. There was a lot of British humour and, while Tomara flopped and fumbled in a few episodes, Tomara was so lovable.

I personally though Michael ate this whole season up and showed a lot more vulnerability and honesty than Ginger who i felt like i barely got to know by the end.
I agree... I was so confused when she started winning. She didn't show much depth and her looks were hideous.

I disagree completely. Just because Ginger hasnt had as much trauma in her past and a relatively happy life, doesnt make her less deserving. I felt I knew exactly who Ginger was and I absolutely loved her. Was she supposed to manufacture fake drama for tv and sympathy? Also insulting her looks and character doesnt change the results so dont be so bitter.

- i honestly think kate shouldve won the panto and snatch game. imo ginger was a bit underwhelming in both
- with e7 and the skits - cara and dede shouldve definitely been the bottom 2. tomara hard carried dede throughout their skit.
- shouldve been a kate ginger double win
- makeover shouldve been dede vs tomara. those huge wigs looked waaaaay too dry and stiff for a safe
- kate beat dede in the lipsync. it felt like dede just did the same thing for the third time
- tomara was better than ginger in the roast
- shouldve been a top 3 lipsync (they made it top 2 because tomara would win)
- michael won the lipsync

Why are some of the show clips mirrored instead of the normal view they were when they aired? The BBC threaten the channel with a strike or something?
The other aspect to the Cara/Michael vs Tomara/DeDe situation were their runways. Hands down Tomara and DeDe had the two worst runways of the night.
I hate so much when a teams challenge is judged half by teams and half not where like in the interview challenge 1 team won then the rest just mix together to find a bottom 2, as well as with the acting challenge if the bottom 2 are gonna be together because they're in a team Ginger and Kate should both win because the skit wouldn't be as good with out one or another.
As a curiosity I wonder how this season and 12 would’ve played out if they didn’t edit out the disqualified queens.
I've heard this about the Snatch Game elsewhere and it really confuses me cause for me Ginger was easily the best. Kate got a few chuckles from me but that was it and Tomara was funny as hell in the exact same way Alyssa was in AS2; she was just being funny and not really doing an impersonation. Also thought Cara's Dionne could have been high instead of either Tomara or Kate.
The make over challenge was the biggest riggory this season and you can't convince me otherwise 🤐

As a brit I do disagree with the snatch game argument. Gingers role is actually accurate and funny. Michaels is cringy but that is how Catherine Tate is with her characters so it was fair. Tomara however really did not deserve a top she was funny but was not Mrs doubtfire in anyway. Same with Kate being funny but not being Kate Bush really. Cars was rightfully safe
The thing is between Tomara and Kate is Kate doesn’t have a lot to go off of, and used that to her advantage (and snatch game isn’t meant to be an impersonation challenge foremost) whereas Tomara had a lot to work from and ignored it

i loved this season Cara, Michael, Kate and Banksy were my favs but honestly i loved seeing Ginger’s arc to seeing her win bc my first impression was she was gonna be an early out. this season was unpredictable.
on the Cara Tomara situation when people are saying Cara wasn’t justified must not have had best friends before LOL like of course it was a little dramatic and she took it personally bc that’s her friend she shouldn’t be shading her to Ru. it’s not a huge deal but when you’re close with someone that’s how you react to stuff so like you said it was v realistic

Alexis is one of my local queens and her lip syncing has always been PHENOMENAL. It was heartbreaking how much the nerves got to her, she could have made it to the top easily
I didn't watch the spoilers of this season, so when I watched I thought Ginger would be a first out, and The top 2 was Kate and Cara in my mind, so I ended up loving it, I felt like one of the least rigged seasons to me
