Yes! I grew up watching Sagwa then Wendy Wu and they both showcased the mooncake. I had wanted to try it and I finally have. It's delicious! I prefer the one without the egg, however.
Most storebought mooncakes use white kidney bean paste as a cheap substitute for lotus seed paste, so that's probably what you'd had when you didn't taste lotus seed in the previous cakes! I actually enjoy the bean paste more, myself. The cakes I've had with salted yolks in the middle also usually have a slightly runny yolk somehow. The salty richness of the gelled yolk mixed with the sweetness of the surrounding paste tricked my mouth into thinking I was eating something with melted caramel in the middle. I found out I love mooncakes this year, and sorta went on a binge. 🙃
Bean paste tastes awesome. i had real lotus one time and the flavor is very... Unique to say the least. Not a flavor i would break my neck to find honestly. Tea, dessert, food... Lotus is not my top 50 flavors...
I teach English to Chinese children. We use mooncake props as a reward system. I want to try them so bad. This video isn't helping. Neither are you @Fortuna with your promises of caramelly goodness 😋!
the first time I ever heard of mooncakes was when pbs kids had this lovely animated show entitled "Sagwa" it was so cute and it made me really learn to love and appreciate Chinese culture even at 10 years old. such nostalgia and good memories!!!
Love how these turned out! Traditional Cantonese style moon cakes are actually taller. And as you mentioned, the character on the mould is “double happiness” because this mould is actually to make traditional wedding cookies, not actually moon cakes. They’re called 龍鳳餅 or 嫁女餅 (bridal cookies/pastries) - traditionally presented as part of the betrothal gift to the bride-to-be’s family by the groom’s family. I had that when I got married. Thought I’d share that little tidbit! Happy mid autumn festival!
There are a lot of mooncake flavors but I really love the white lotus w/ 2 eggs. Hahaha. Recently, here in the Philippines, one of the chinese bakeries released a Chocolate Banana Mooncake, Pandan Mooncake, Mochaccino Mooncake, Ube Mooncake, and Durian Mooncake. I only tried the Chocolate Banana one and it was so good. The paste, I think, was mung beans with banana flavor or actual bananas and it was filled with oozing chocolate. Hahaha.
Many cultures celebrated by going out at night with candle-lit lanterns and greeting friends and family. I remember some of these lanterns got very fancy and elaborate: rabbit, pumpkin, goldfish, dragon, or butterfly shaped. This festival was also a time to give thanks for a bountiful harvest during the autumn. As an alternative to the heavier lotus paste based cakes, a lot of trendier recipes have pastel colored mochi based crusts with fruit flavored centers. Very traditional recipes used lard in the lotus paste instead of oil too. I am amazed Emmy and thank you for sharing this wonderful video.
To be honest most people i've gotten to know here in China also dont really like the taste of mooncakes, but all just eat them because its tradition.. I agree, im not too fond of the flavor. Its just sweet, especially the ones with bean paste in. But the peanut flavored ones are quite nice. But yeah as you said, they are SO DENSE, it seriously feels like eating Lembas Bread from LOTR lol, you just need 1 bite to fill your stomach.
Try using a whole seeded lychee for the moon. Wrap it with mochi or unsweetened rice flour dough. Then use rough ground black sesame, blackberries, and a splish of rose water for the filling. It's a filling a friend made when we were in middle school because she didn't enjoy the traditional ones :) Edit: Just cook the filling until you can leave a clean line on the back of a spoon, the chill. It should be jammy and slightly sticky. Song (Her grandma called named her something I can't type, so we all called her this) made them twice and gave me the notes for it XD no cooking times or measurements though!
My parents gave me a tin of mooncakes (double yolks :) last weekend and I’m eating some now as I watch this video! I’m amazed you made these from scratch!

Mooncakes were always really fascinating to me. Now that I live in Copenhagen, we have a lot more asian grocery stores here. I'll dig into it a little more and maybe try someday :) i know one of the asian stores actually sold moon cakes, but they were incredibly expensive.5 dollars for just one moon cake and a box of them was 30$ . But I might cave in today :) Girlfriend and I are celebrating our one year annivesary and we're going to a chinese buffet too, so might as well try some mooncakes. Cheers from Denmark!

Thank you! I am a VIPKid teacher (English immersion for Chinese children) and we have been talking about the Mod-Autumn Festival all week! I bought some mooncakes at our local Asian market but I am glad to see that you made some and now I know what to expect when I try mine!
The memories of your childhood moon cakes made watching your hard work even more meaningful. I think store bought just loses the heart and soul of the traditional meaning. They looked amazing and delicious. Thanks for sharing these with us. I love the wooden mold too!
I got these once at an Asian Supermarket once, pre-made hot and ready to eat. I took a bite and was overwhelmed with its richness. I was with a friend and she mocked me when I was at first turned off but kept eating them. Now whenever I’m at the store I always get a couple because their richness and subtle sweetness is so delicious. I had no idea they had such cultural weight! I’ll pick some up tomorrow to celebrate the holiday.
Thank you for going in depth on the meaning of the holiday as well as the ingredients and symbolism of the cake! One of my best friends is from China and at her restaurant she is receiving lots of moon cakes from her vendors. I normally see them during Lunar New Year, so I was curious as to the occasion. She told me it was sort of a middle of the year celebration, but her English isn’t the strongest so she wasn’t too sure how to explain exactly what it was. So thank you for providing me with more understanding 💕
We have been watching Over the Moon on Netflix (our new favorite!) and my daughter has been obsessed with the mooncakes! This was fun to watch with her and see the traditional way to make them. Thank you!
@@kaimantou1082 that's true, they're probably pricey. I haven't bought any in recent years but I just remember when I was younger my mom brought home a couple and I was so amazed by the strawberry and green tea ones.

I was so happy that you didn’t say « Itadakimasu » before taking a bite this time. A) because the moon cake is a Chinese thing and B) because I’m not all that crazy about it when you say it every single time. You’re a lovely woman and your videos are so awesome so I have no other complaints.
kinda sad the fact that our family doesn't really eat this cake anymore because... you know diabetes... high cholesterol... hypertension... *sigh* well i can eat it tho, but it is no fun eating it alone :(
Actually recent research has shown that eating cholesterol containing foods in your diet don't increase your cholesterol levels. In fact the initial research that the idea of eggs etc increasing cholesterol levels in the blood have been re-examined, it turns out the data was actually really weak and has proven be unreproducible in further testing. The new research is really new, as in earlier this year new, I'm sure you'll be able to find it online.
I had a friend with the same problem in college. She swapped out the over-sweetened paste with black sesame mochi with only 1/4 of the original sugar and used a lychee as the moon :D

@@jamesglenn745 I am very well, how are you today?
@@xoGullysMumox I'm fine thanks for asking,I'd like to know more about you if you don't mind 🙂

My girl is pulling out all the stops, the skills in the kitchen though! Impeccable!
Good Job Emmy, your content is getting more exciting every single day.
i actually clapped a little when you cut open the mooncake! haha! happy mid-autumn festival!
What a beautiful flower. That is a very different kind of cookie. Lots of work. Thanks for sharing.
Good job, Emmy! They came out beautiful :) Wish I could reach through my screen and get a bite.
Thank you! I am a VIPKid teacher (English immersion for Chinese children) and we have been talking about the Mod-Autumn Festival all week! I bought some mooncakes at our local Asian market but I am glad to see that you made some and now I know what to expect when I try mine!
Well, I definitely learned something. 😁 They look beautiful.
The memories of your childhood moon cakes made watching your hard work even more meaningful. I think store bought just loses the heart and soul of the traditional meaning. They looked amazing and delicious. Thanks for sharing these with us. I love the wooden mold too!
You seem very knowledgeable! That looks very good hahaha. Great content as always!!
Yay ! I’ve been waiting for you to show us how to make these !! Thank you Emmy ❤️😘
You're most welcome. 😊
Hello 👋 how are you doing today
@@jamesglenn745 good hbu ?
@@Manderzbaby2012 I'd like to know more about you if you don't mind 🙂
Thank you!
Beautiful work Emmy!
you should try snow skin moon cakes, they come in a bunch of fun flavors :D
Are they kinda layered thin white skin cakes with filling in middle? Haven't had one since childhood.
I have a recipe for a pumpkin filled snowskin mooncake I want to try.
You just reminded me of the name of the ones I made with the students in China. Snow skin - that’s it. Thanks.
They're so overpriced though, at least in Singapore they are.
@@kaimantou1082 that's true, they're probably pricey. I haven't bought any in recent years but I just remember when I was younger my mom brought home a couple and I was so amazed by the strawberry and green tea ones.
Emmy you are just HANDS DOWN .... amazing!!! I love watching you in the mornings after ive been stressed out trying to deal with my kids and school 😖😖 you are so calm and relaxing. I truly APPRECIATE all you do for this channel!!! You put so much thought, tedious work and love into your videos. 👏👏👏💯💖 just AMAZING!! So much love... from the PNW
Lotus seeds remind me of corn nuts or tiny bird heads.
omg i was modeling in shanghai back in fall 2015 and luckily was there for the autumn festival and got to try mooncakes from all types of vendors in shanghai and beijing during the national holiday and EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS. china inspired me in so many ways and i would move back in a heartbeat. you make the best vids emmy!
Omg I grew up on these!! Thank you Emmy!! 🥮🥮
THE FOOD i’ve never seen this emoji woaah🥮
THE FOOD wtf 🥮
I'm glad you are still alive. You eat & make the craziest stuff!
Ahhh I’m so excited for autumn!! X
Me too. It's such a beautiful time of year. 🍂
Yes me too!!! Fall comes with Halloween and then After that The holiday season truly begins
Thank you so much for being conscientious of us who do have trypophobia and not showing an image of a pod! Just another reason I love you as a person!
Thank you so much Emmy for respect people with trypophobia 💖
I was so happy that you didn’t say « Itadakimasu » before taking a bite this time. A) because the moon cake is a Chinese thing and B) because I’m not all that crazy about it when you say it every single time. You’re a lovely woman and your videos are so awesome so I have no other complaints.
kinda sad the fact that our family doesn't really eat this cake anymore because... you know diabetes... high cholesterol... hypertension...
*sigh*
well i can eat it tho, but it is no fun eating it alone :(
My family worked around the high cholesterol thing by splitting a single mooncake with everyone. So everyone had a sliver.
She swapped out the over-sweetened paste with black sesame mochi with only 1/4 of the original sugar and used a lychee as the moon :D
maybe make a different version that still looks like a mooncake?
Emmymadeinjapan, you have one of the cutest and most informative cooking channels out there, i love your style!
Wait I just realized that it’s the festival tomorrow!!!
Yessss! I had a wonderful coworker bring me one that his mother had made and it was absolutely freaking delightful!
Grew up eating these. But I like mooncakes made with red bean paste and salted egg yolk way more than lotus bean version. Enjoyed video though.
I could watch you make beautiful, unique dishes for hours ♥️ thank you for putting in the time!
12:02 👀✌Happy Autumn Festival. "Swiiing" ⚾
She hit the recipe out of the park. I love emmy cause she actually tries and makes stuff.
Beautiful!!! This is so moving. I love the story. (history) behind it.Thank you for sharing this and enlightening us!!❤️
I can’t imagine it being hard to find golden syrup because I live in Britain and that’s sold everywhere 😂
Alister Day It’s basically non-existent in the US!
@@mrsary7868 aunt j is pancake syrup... like faux maple syrup.... its definitely not the same as "corn syrup".... because in the U.S Karo syrup is what our corn syrup is called.....lol
This was indeed an ENORMOUS amount of work! You truly have a gift! They turned out so beautifully! 🍂 🌝 🍁 thank you!!!
Oof, labour-intensive alright..but you nailed it!
Thank you. 😊
Around this time last year a coworker brought in a bunch of mooncakes because they had gotten too many and everyone in their house was sick of them. None of our other coworkers really liked them, so I got to take home a bunch! I'm impressed by the amount of work that goes in to them
Oh man, the best mooncakes are definitely in NYC Chinatown. If you're there, stop by Sweets!
Thanks for the recommendation.
Thank you! Our local Asian supermarkets have had piles and piles and piles of boxes of mooncakes on sale and we were wondering why. It's a lovely idea. Best festival wishes to you and your loved ones.
I really appreciate it that Emmy warned us people with trypophobia. ☺️
🙄 first world problems.
We just watched the movie "over the moon" and then this video was reccomended to me! I'm so glad, I didn't know what moon cakes were and now I kinda wanna spend the time to actually make!
