- Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Frank Gambale Licks From 1995. Frank Gambale is a guitar legend of fusion guitar and burst on the scene when he joined forces with the late-great Chick Corea in the mid-1980s, and from there he's inspired and influenced guitarists and music fans alike from all over the world.
This "Thunder From Down Under" can literally melt your face with his beyond-impressive technique and chops, as his economy and sweep picking technique/ability is notoriously known among guitarists from every musical style, and Frank himself has taught a number of notable players that have become notable/famous in their own way.
This lesson features some tasty ideas that were pulled from a clinic/performance Frank held at MI in 1995. The ideas shared here include some tasteful melodic phrasing using the harmonic minor scale, not to mention a few wicked G# diminished arpeggio ideas that imply A harmonic minor, so we're also hitting a little arpeggio substitution in this lesson, which is one of Frank's strongest areas of his knowledge and ability - he's a substitution master!
There are some great ideas hiding in this lesson, so give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

Also, master of leather trousers.
One of the first guitarists whom I saw on REH video, I don't think my brain has ever really recovered.
I love the honesty when asked why not more sweeping licks...
Seen him play live in 95 at a french restaurant in la on Ventura Blvd
Awesome licks David! Troy Grady did a picking technique breakdown of Frank interestingly enough he’s not as strict economy as maybe some believed! He actually alternate picks certain passages and was really interesting to se in slow motion with Troy’s special camera angle! All that being said i economy pick whenever possible personally as well 🤘🏻
You can see it in Frank's own instructional books, there's a lot of alternate picking there. Thing is, Frank's a musician, he'll do whatever works, even if he's most known for a certain style. And because he can alternate pick really well, it's not like he struggles if the lick calls for some straight alternate picking.
I got to see Frank do a concert at GIT when I was a student there in 2015 and he was amazing and just a wonderful musician to watch at work and hear him talk after.
Loved Frank from the eighties!.Frank's a Monster! And he still loves to play. Love Frank!! Dave, you ain't no slouch either my friend!
Yes!!!! Thanks, David!
Thanks..... My fingers truly hate you! 😜. Absolutely awesome player. He once said the guitar is an animal to be tamed. That untill you have total control physically over the fretboard. It is like speaking a language you dont know all the words of. Paraphrasing for brevity
This is an absolutely super lesson and like many of David's lessons, there's as much to learn just from watching and taking notice of what he does around the lick he's demonstrating as well as the lick itself. I have a really nice lick I made up ages ago that sounds cool and thanks to watching this I now see why it's working over a harmonic minor. I always love the intro talk too as it's always very informative and has hooked me up to so many bands and players that were not on my radar. It's a great video format and has changed little from the start, totally because it was absolutely spot on right out of the gate. Many thanks.
I remember he did a lesson on modes with a flexi disk in a guitar magazine, many years ago, excellent it was.
Love Frank Gambale...
That third lick is fantastic!.
Awesome Lesson...Still have is " Chop Builder" video
I remember how Frank was regularly featured in Guitarist magazine in the late 80s and how his technique was frightening !
I saw him in 1991, yellow Ibanez period, same band as the live album, it was great !
I've got an '89 Desert Yellow Saber 540. Got to get these licks down to do it justice!
Frank always pointed out that he was doing "economy" picking as opposed to sweep picking especially when the latter was frequently interpreted by 80s guitarists to mean raking noisily across all six strings in one go - when in the Gambale approach it could be just two strings if you wanted. He also talked about targeting the 7th and 3rd to spice things up. Great player.
Landlocked Music! Crazy to see some Bloomington exposure.
Awesome job David.
Fantastic video. Thanks for it!
Jeepers Dave! Rainy, gloomy day here and I needed some inspiration. Thanks so much for this LNL! :D
Brilliant insight into Franks approach maestro. Excellent sir.
Thats cool,,Rick Beato did an interview with him a few days ago. this is going to take some practice :)
Very nice session Sir and so down to earth, so much respect for Frank Gambale.
Frank Gambale and Greg Howe got me into styles of music I would have discovered much later or not at all. A joy to listen to and to learn from.
I really think your content is so varied and super interesting... great playing too... well done bro always a pleasure watching your channel
Very cool
Have a blessed week
Great, GREAT video. The best pay about these licks to me is that they actually have a SOUND. There is a proper harmonic content to them. Tasty stuff! (Also maybe a video idea: How to make locks and phrases and solos sound modal, or harmonically different.)
I first heard of Frank Gambale from my guitar teacher, who attended GIT (and graduated) during the time when Frank taught there. I had all the directional picking exercises straight from Dr Sweep. Hard fail on those fuckers 😂 but I listened to him for the last 40 years almost constantly. And this guy Dave did a great job picking some licks out as well as executing them.
Your a brave man 🍺’ski & another great lesson. Loved his work with RTF amazing. Also find the video of Holdsworth watching him play & marveling @ what Frank was playing. Pretty neat seeing those 2 legends together!
Def one of the best lessons, those licks are so smooth, Frank is amazing, can you do 10 more on just Frank please!!!
Great lesson Dave !
Love your channel. I would love to get your take on one of my favorite solos, Not just knee deep by the Funkadelics. Also I’ve never been able to find out for sure who performed it. My best educated guess is Gary Shider.
Saw Frank play with Return to Forever on a split bill with Zappa Plays Zappa a few years back. After that show, no one else could play for a week because those guys used up all the notes.
Frank is so tasty , absolute master . Might of missed it (or forgot) but a Bret Garsed licks would be great .
Frank is my favorite guitarist
Ripping it, Dave! Nice!! There is a podcast by Jude Gold called 'No Guitar Is Safe' in which Jude did a really great and interesting interview with Frank Gambale. Interesting to hear why he didn't introduce his first technique book initially as sweep picking.
Awesome lesson!!!Thanks for the great content. How about some modern Neal Schon or Polyphia💪🤟
I’m not sure what Brewster plays through for his videos but it sounds good to me.
Check out Frank’s solo from “Please Don’t Feel Bad” on Vital Info’s Fiafiaga. Also his album ‘thunder from down under” is completely amazing with ‘Robo-roo” standing out. Also FG on Truth in Shredding’s Rocks is great.
It boils down to the fact that G# dim7 is the seven chord from A harmonic minor.
Frank is in the same ballpark as Vinnie Moore. Both over looked masters. "To the Core" had some really beautiful solos. His vibrato is so smooth.
Vinnie moore... Lol
@@MisterPoppy-sc1sj I was 14 once.
Man I love Vinnie Moore but he’d tell ya don’t compare him to Frank.
@@uncleremus5046 why? Have you checked out his history?
@@wulfenii64 yes I love Vinnie Moore but Frank’s technically a way more advanced player. Gambale can navigate changes of very complex compositions with ease not to mention his monster chops. It’s not a logical comparison.
Excellent presentation and musicianship David! You are a gifted man, indeed! What gear are you using here? Thanks.
My copy of his “Speed Picking” book (and cassette) is in front of me on my music stand, next to the tab for my Marty Friedman “Exotic Metal.”
😊
In fact, I practiced examples from both of them, last night.
I’ve continued to revisit those tabs and practice them.
Frank’s Modes, No more mystery books explain the modes in the most simple way…. Especially more so than most RUclips videos
On Truth In Shredding Gambale dared to go toe toe with the GOAT and held his own.
Hell yeah..
Could you do a 3 Chris Poland licks?
Ur reely gud..dont stress
weird...started his workout routine 3 days ago...
🤟😎
It's very hard to emulate for everybody 😣
Frank Gambale NAMM show licks are so much better check them out. Geezer Butler is going to rerelease all his solo album so listen to all the albums to get some riff lessons and guitar solo licks from those albums. I know you have been counting the days for the new night ranger album coming out on august 6 more brad gillis which you still need to make a brad gillis lesson.
The problem with these kind of guitarists, is that they fancy complex scales, fast notes but hardly play cool or melodic solo’s, like Gary Moore, Mark Knopfler, David Gilmour etc. The best guitar solos are the ones that you can whistle or hum without hearing them at that moment😂
Frank play many cool and melodic solo's too
To each his own. I think David Gilmore and Mark Knoppler are boring. Great players but I'd hum their stuff to help me sleep. Gary Moore is friggin awesome though.
@@JD-vj4go How good do you know Knopfler and Gilmour, if you write their names wrong?😂 They are not boring: billions of fans can’t be wrong… they both wrote the biggest songs and solo’s in the history and influenced lots of guitarists
@@christian-van-e I'm on a phone and just used auto complete. How great can they be if my phone can't even spell their names? 😂 You can like what you like but my favorite guitarist can beat up your favorite guitarist.
@@JD-vj4go haha, ok ok. In the end, music is not a competition ofcourse.
You gotta a haircut…or two
No shame in saying " cant really play like Frank Gambale", lol,- nobody really can
Def one of the best lessons, those licks are so smooth, Frank is amazing, can you do 10 more on just Frank please!!!
